Delicious food, fast service, and great Amsterdam dining experience! We stopped by Cafe Luxembourg for dinner in August 2023 after our first day of exploring Amsterdam. It was a challenge to find a restaurant having space for 4 people around 6-7pm. We were walking by people sitting outside, relaxing, and happily eating and felt very lucky getting seated there as well. The food didn't disappoint! All the dishes we ordered were truly delicious and had a nice presentation! We really enjoyed our dinner while watching passers-by on a typical Amsterdam street. Thank you Cafe Luxembourg for such a great finishing for our first day in Amsterdam! We certainly recommend Cafe Luxembourg if you are in the area looking for a local Amsterdam dining experience. In a city packed with people for an event, we really struggled to find some place to eat. Almost everywhere was full however we stumbled across this place which was happy to take us. A bit no nonsense, and definitely nothing fancy, I really enjoyed our evening here. We sampled quite a few small bites off the menu and were mostly satisfied with the results. Great drink selection and service provided by hard working staff. I suspect this is known more as a cheaper spot in the city - it seemed to cater to a younger crowd. This was right down the street from the conference I was at and I was looking for mussels. Cafe Luxembourg did not disappoint. In fact, they had some nice seating in a heated porch area that overlooked the plaza-ish area that was pleasant. They had Karmeliet trippel on tap which was great and the onion soup was pretty good. Mussels was a good size serving and came with fries and aioli. Plenty more on the menu to try as well. Service was friendly and the place was doing a solid business. read more

I stopped for a late lunch at the Cafe Luxembourg because it came highly recommended by a Frommer's travel guide. II ordered the Traditional menu which included: a cup of tomato basil soup (yum!), Russian salad on a slice of "brown" bread (or what in the US we call whole wheat), and a lamb croquette on another slice of brown bread. The lamb croquette had a subtle but delicious taste and was the size of an eggroll! The Russian salad (small cubes of onion, potato, some vinegar) had a unique taste that anyone can appreciate provided they don't mind raw onions. I did not have the coffee or any brews, so cannot speak to beverages other than hot tea. The service was great. My waiter was very pleasant and helpful. I sat at a table outside facing the square which was a nice way to rest and enjoy lunch. The only drawback is the cigarette smoke coming from all directions, BUT it IS outside seating I don't have a right to complain. Price ... well, considering the value of the dollar against the Euro . . . it was reasonable. read more

I really really really enjoyed this wee cafe in Amsterdam. We went twice while we were in town for drinks only (late night) and really had a great time. Everything about Cafe Luxembourg is so chill and relaxing, I really felt cozy and happy both times we visited. It's a great place to sit outdoors with your best friends, chat and just be happy. The first time we visited was simply because the bar next door was too packed to even go near, and we noticed that there were cute out door seating available here, so we took a seat and ordered drinks. The prices were cheap enough we didn't feel like we were even in Amsterdam (as things are quite expensive in this city). Luxembourg is right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the University area and its a great place to people watch. Loads of people on their bikes, in cars and walking about, it really felt like we were in the center of it all. Funny thing about this place is that both times we were here, towards the end of our nights, it started pouring rain. The first night, we were able to hide under their canopy until we decided to basically run back to where we were staying, but the second time, we weren't so lucky as it started to rain just as we were leaving. The staff here are very friendly and very accommodating. It seemed a little on the slow side to get the bill each time, but the way things run here in Amsterdam, the bar staff carry around little pouches to exchange money right then and their and don't have to go back to the till to cash out. Maybe I'm falling in love with Amsterdam so I see everything with rose-tinted glasses, but this cafe is one of the many lovely cafes I have been in Amsterdam. My friends and I both ordered a Spanish coffee while the third ordered the old-fashioned Irish coffee, all that turned out to be very delicious. The place is facing some sort of square and I imagine it must be nice to sit outside when the weather permits, but at that time it was rainy and windy that we were sitting in the closed patio. Our waiter was lovely and he bore our jokes very well and still polite all the way, but I must admit that I went to this place because it was just a stone's throw from our hotel. read more

I liked this cafe so much that when we rolled back into town on our way back to the US, I just had to bring hubby with me to have him taste the most delicious sandwich I've had in a long, long time. I hit Cafe Luxembourg solo on my first day by myself in Amsterdam. It's definitely one of those places where a girl can sit and eat a meal by herself and not feel self conscience. There's a nice enclosed patio which is nice on a non-freezing day. Otherwise the inside of the cafe is very comfortable as well. On to my favorite sandwich... white bread, parma ham, fresh mozzarella and pesto. Sounds pretty simple, right? That's probably what makes it soooo good. Good service, clean restaurant and decent coffee. I am a BIG fan of dutch coffee! I didn't think the prices were astronomical or anything. I've even gone to great lengths to recreate my favorite little sandwich at home... with only minimal success. I guess another trip back to Amsterdam is in my future! read more

Greeter was rude and couldn't find our reservation for party of 8. When I found it on my email she was even more rude and said they would seat us. It was 100% outdoor seating at the time but they seated us in the very back of the inside part of the restaurant. We were the only ones in there and heat was sweltering. Food was average. Service was great, bathrooms were clean, and there were lots of seating choices- outside, in shaded patio, inside. I had the ham croissant and my husband had the egg and mushroom omelet- lovely. Really liked the little pickles. Also enjoyed the cappuccino. Omelet was 8.50 and croissant was 4.50- add two large cappuccinos to that and the bill was 21.30. Cafe Luxembourg is right in the smack of the traffic area for tourist. My impression of this cafe is that it's ideal if you are a tourist or meeting a small group of people for lunch or dinner. I went here last night for an event and I didn't think it was an ideal setting for a large group of people. However, I think that I would have appreciated this refine cafe if it was for another occasion. So next time I will have to stop in this cafe for lunch with a friend to see if it is really all what's it's cracked up to be. read more

A classic choice for a beer, a snack, and some people-watching. We sat in the covered section outside, where we could watch exhausted tourists trying to negotiate the Spui. The bitterballen are fine. The service is a bit impatient. The central location can be entertaining, but also annoying. In the space of an hour, we were asked to contribute to the Dutch Red Cross, accosted by a guy singing for tips, and approached by one of those bar/bikes peddled simultaneously by a dozen drunk Brits. One of the Brits, apparently on a dare, jumped off and started kissing people at nearby tables. It was all in good fun, but if you're not in the mood, this isn't the spot for you. read more

Cute little cafe on the corner. Perfect view to people watch. It's great place to talk and enjoy the view. Personally the service seemed slow but they were very friendly. I had the croque Madame and the latte macchiato. The croque Madame was sooooo good. It had a crispy Parmesan crust on the bread but it was gooey inside with the bechamel sauce and the runny egg yolk on top. Served with a small salad so you feel like you're getting some veggies. Monsieur and I recently lunched at Cafe Luxembourg in the intellectual district of Spui in Amsterdam. The weather was fine, if chilly, so the terrace was full as patrons basked in the sun. Inside, a waiter waved his hand around sit wherever you like, he said as he rushed off, plates in hand. We walked towards two vacant tables in the covered terrace area, but a waitress came up and shooed us away, people have been waiting for these tables, she told us brusquely. In the fairly full dining room we found a table for two to the rear of the restaurant, looking out onto the canal. A harassed but courteous waiter brought us a couple of Dommelsch beers, forgot our water, took our order, forgot some of that but the food was good and heartfelt apologies came each time he forgot something, including the bill. My fellow bloggers at Blog08 had warned me that service in Amsterdam is a bit slap-dash, which turned out to be more accurate than I realised it would be. I guess it just goes with the territory. If you lived here, I think you'd get used to it. As a starter I had a single Ostend (Belgian shrimp) croquette, served on a single slice of white bread with some sort of dill mayonnaise. It was an unattractive proposition on the plate, but creamy and tasty. I'm mad on croquettes, and this one didn't disappoint. Monsieur had ordered a beef burger, which we'd been warned would take about 20 minutes to prepare. He was ready to wait, but when both starter and main courses arrived all at once, his starter was missing. In the end, we didn't fuss because his plate of burger, fries and salad was plenty to keep him going for the rest of the day. Meanwhile, my main was called 'Smoking Salmon as a Handicraft'. I'm not sure if that was a direct translation of something meaningful in Dutch, but it sounded intriguing. The thick slices of lightly smoked salmon was served on a bed of lettuce, between two half-moons of flatbread and was incredibly tender and tasty. Highly recommended for a light lunch. One thing that interested me as I looked around the room was the little bottles of milk on a lot of tables. They looked like miniature Grolsch bottles, with that flip cork attachment. Apparently, the Dutch are mad for milk. I guess that explains the cow memorabilia everywhere. read more

I came here for a late dinner and it's a great place to do so. They're opened really late (1am) and they're right on Spui. There were a lot of restaurants and cafes on Spui and so even late at night there are a lot people coming through the area. There's activity but it's not too noisy or rowdy at all. I had the veal croquettes and even though they only give two pieces, between that and the fries it comes with it was very filling. Their croquettes are really good! The breading is crunchy but thin and light and the inside is very creamy with tiny pieces of veal. I would definitely get it again! read more

Pleasant grand cafe on the Spui. Should I mention it's spacious? That supposedly goes with being a grand cafe already... Good enough menu, lots of seating, reading table. Friendly service. Especially practical for those who prefer a bit of space, those who prefer to sit, and for those with children. Look out for the occasional celebrity or journalist.
