If it's your first time here, what catches you is the decor and the coziness the cafe brings. A few friends stopped going here because of how busy it was during the weeknights. At this point, this cafe is better off for casual gatherings and not for study sessions. I think it's only one of the few cafes that are open past 10 PM. I've been to many different cafes in NY and visited cafe bench a few times in the past few years with large groups. I saw a recent view and was surprised to have read about the lack of disrespect a Hispanic man gave. I saw him a few times and I never saw something similar to that extent. There may be a lack of awareness on his end for bowing down and if that truly happened, I'd be pissed too and that's so uncalled for. I've been to other cafes with a similar policy but yeah, this cafe is pretty well known for having strict no-remake, no-modification policies. I've seen other customers caught off guard by it too. From what my friends and I observed, the staff doesn't make those calls and they're busy with orders like any other cafe. I'm just writing this to to share a different perspective as someone who's been there many times as I came by last weekend to give it another shot. I got the Jasmine Bear which was less sweet than before and took a sip of my friend's Berry Mucho Smoothie which was a 9/10. I wish i got that because the Jasmine Bear isn't as sweet. I usually get the Lemon C crepe and decided to try out the pomodoro instead. There are plenty of tables for a cozy date or just to hang with friends. The menu has a good selection of items to pick from. Bonbons, shaved ice desserts, crepes, waffles, cakes.... Hot or cold drinks.... Coffee, tea , fruit drinks.... Pretty designs on the hot drinks. This is still one of my favorite cafes. It's really nicely decorated and so cute with the nice lighting which makes it feel so cozy. There is no table service here, you just order/pay at the counter and they give you a buzzer when you're food is ready. I got the turkey crepe which came with a side salad. I also ordered a cappuccino along with a passion fruit drink. The food was prepared quickly and was tasty. I loved my little cinnamon design on my cappuccino...so cute! One thing about this place is you must bring your tray and plates/glasses etc back to the counter and clean up your table when done. I know they don't like it if you leave everything at the table and simply leave because there is no waitstaff there. I honestly hate writing reviews. I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like to bad mouth anyone or business -- especially in New York City, where running a small business is already tough enough. Prices are high, customers are demanding, and the last thing anyone needs is another negative comment online. But once in a while, something happens so outrageous, so disrespectful, that you can't stay quiet. This is one of those moments. I've been a loyal customer of Cafe Bench for over 10 years. I've brought friends here, studied here, and supported this place since the early days. But after my most recent visit, I can confidently say -- I will never be coming back. I came in with a group of six, including my wife, who's pregnant and diabetic. She ordered a small matcha latte, which turned out to be incredibly sweet -- undrinkable, really. I went to the counter and politely explained the situation, asking if they could kindly remake it with no added sugar for medical reasons. There were four employees behind the counter. The cashier mentioned the drink had five pumps of sugar (which is absurd, by the way) and went to ask her coworker what to do. That coworker checked with what seemed to be the manager -- a Hispanic man -- and came back to tell me I'd need to pay another $8.44 for a remake. I was stunned. I wasn't asking for a refund, just a small accommodation for a legitimate health issue. I even suggested to simply add more milk or water to dilute it. But nope -- flat refusal. "Store policy." Frustrated, I told them to just give me the drink back and returned to my table. I quietly told my group what happened, and as they looked over -- visibly confused -- that same "manager" looked right at us and smirked. When I met his gaze, he pressed his hands together, bowed, and smirked again. Why is he bowing? Now, I don't want to throw around words like racism lightly, but as an Asian person, I cannot overstate how humiliating that gesture felt. My entire table saw it. We were shocked and disgusted. If I hadn't been there with small children, I would've walked out on the spot. Let me say this as someone who's supported this café for a decade: Cafe Bench has gone completely downhill. * The desserts are overloaded with sugar, chocolate, and ice cream -- style over substance. * The drinks are overpriced and inconsistent. * The staff is unprofessional, and in my case, downright disrespectful. Years ago, I even used to study here until I learned from a former employee that the owner intentionally removed electrical outlets because she didn't like people staying too long. That tells you everything you need to know about how they view their customers. And speaking of the owner -- I've since heard that in local Korean community that she doesn't have the best reputation due to similar rude and dismissive behavior. Sadly, after this experience, I believe it. At this point, Cafe Bench is surviving purely on its décor and Instagram appeal -- not quality, not service, and certainly not integrity. If you want better value, friendlier staff, and actual respect as a customer, I recommend Cafe Grey, Beans & Malt, or Cafe Auburndale -- all nearby and way ahead in every possible way. I had brunch here and it was a really nice spot to chat and chill. It's a bit busy and bustling and is a fairly popular spot. You place your order directly at the counter and pick up when the order is ready for your table. I had the Teriken crepe, which was savory with chicken and teriyaki sauce, and the Amaretto Nut Truffle. I also had the Blueberry Lavenderade to drink. Overall, the food was good. Cafe Bench is a cute spot to go to for a date or to hang out with friends. Although I have been with friends, I love taking myself on a solo date there along with my journal! As soon as you enter, the ambience is so relaxing and beautiful. It is decorated in a whimsical, romantic way with the fairy lights and the miniature houses around the room. It's exactly how I vision my wedding to look like! The prices are kind of $$ though. Last month, I ordered the Sunrise Hibiscus Sparkler and it was $8!! However, the drink was quite refreshing and was a form of visual art as the ice was creatively designed into a rose and was beautiful. The food is made up of both savory and sweet crepes. I ordered the Mary Poppins dessert crepe and was not a huge fan of it. The whipped topping was just too sweet. The actual crepe was delicious though but I didn't think the value was worth the price. I really like that the food and drinks are all forms of visual art and are each individually distinct from the other! I came here for post-dinner dessert with my friends. It's pretty spacious inside, but the tables are quite close together probably to acommodate more people, but that's not unusual in my opinion. The interior is decorated very beautifully and we were fortunate to go during the holidays because their Christmas decor was amazing. We got 2 dessert crepes, one with orange marmalade and chocolate and another with red bean and matcha ice cream. They were good, but not amazing, but good. We didn't try their drinks but if I return, I will since a lot of reviews are mentioning their drinks. Service was friendly and prompt. The place was PACKED on a Friday night - all tables were filled, the side benches were filled, and the line was a few people deep. Thankfully, we snagged a table for 2. My fiance & I decided to share a Nutella Addict crepe and a regular hot chocolate, which came out to about $19. After ordering, it took around 25 minutes since they were really backed up. Honestly for $19, this was quite disappointing. The crepes are smaller than I remember and for about $11/$12, it wasn't really good value for its price point. Hot chocolate was mostly foam and milk, with a hint of cocoa only. For what it's worth, the inside is cozy though. Not sure I'd be dying to go back anytime soon, but good for those once in a while cravings. read more

Been going here for 5+ years now and love how their food stays consistent as well as their service. I got my usual Crème Lovers Crepe with strawberries, which was a tasty dessert after dinner. They have a wide variety of options you can choose from. This place is my FAVORITE go-to dessert cafe because of how delicious the crepes are. We also got a latte that had a cute art designed on top of it. The service was relatively quick considering that there were a lot of people there and there is plenty of seating options for customers. Got some savory crepes and they were just OK. I think the fillings are good but the crepe did not go well with it. Maybe the crepe is intended for sweets. . I've been coming to this café for many years, and while there are things I truly appreciate, my overall experience has gone downhill to the point where I won't be returning. Please read until the end. The setup is simple: you order at the counter, get a buzzer, then pick up your food and clean up after yourself. The ambience is lovely, always decorated for the season with cute benches, and the crêpes, coffees, and cappuccinos are delicious (though the crêpes get cold quickly). Unfortunately, the service has been consistently unpleasant. Years ago, I ordered a decaf drink. When I double-checked with the staff, I was told--very rudely and loudly--that it wasn't decaf and that I needed to pay an extra $0.85 if I wanted it remade. The small upcharge wasn't the issue; it was the way the situation was handled, with zero accountability and unnecessary hostility. Another time, when I placed an order using the number printed on their menu (exactly as they've set it up), I was scolded and told I should say the name of the item instead. Why even provide numbers if customers aren't allowed to use them? On another visit, I had a personal bottle of water with me after walking there. Instead of kindly reminding me of the policy, the woman behind the counter came to my table and loudly scolded me in front of everyone. More recently, my brother ordered an iced coffee but was given a hot one. When he tried to correct it, he was met with the same aggressive yelling I had experienced before. Even my son wasn't spared. He simply moved a chair so our family could sit together for what was a large (and expensive) order, and he was harshly reprimanded for "causing hazards." The common theme here is that the person running the counter--whether owner or manager--seems to lack basic courtesy and professionalism. While the food and drinks are genuinely good, the way customers are treated completely ruins the experience. Sadly, no matter how tasty the crêpes are, I won't be coming back. read more

We got matcha latte, dolce latte and cafe bombon. As for the food the crepes were cold. I don't know if they were already premade but they were not warm at all. We ordered the fiesta, Alfie and cheesecake crepe. The fiesta was not spicy as it being the only item on the menu listed as spicy. The alfie was warm on the inside only. The cheesecake pieces on the cheesecake crepe were frozen and only partially filled. Now for the customer service- When we entered, there were about two tables occupied. This was our first time and when we walked in no one acknowledged us. As I asked if we seat ourselves, the lady replied yes, no table service. I went to take four menus as there was an abundance of menus and it wasn't packed and it was the four of us. The lady said you can share one. So I took one and we sat down. My friend got up and grabbed more menus as she could not see. We went up to order. Since we made separate orders we had two table buzzers for our orders. My friend's buzzer went off and went to pick up the tray the woman ran after my friend saying it's not her order and made it seem like my friend was stealing someone's tray of food. The four of us witnessed her buzzer go off. After receiving another buzzer and waited for her order and once it went off the lady at the counter said see it sounds different. Making it seem like it was my friend's mistake. Once we received all our food, it was very well presented and plating was beautiful but quality was not good and food was cold. Another issue was one of my friends had to use the bathroom and they said it was out of service. Due to food quality and the lack of customer service, I will not be returning here again. read more
