Ummm holy sweet coffee... I like that this cafe roasts their own coffee, but most of their drinks cover the coffee flavor with excessive sweetness. My coffee was actually fairly good.... it was a Turkish Coffee and it had a nice balance of sweetness and spice. My sister got a sweeter coffee drink and it was almost undrinkable.... too sweet. STORY TIME! My senior year of high school, I decided to take a friend of mine to Cafe Calypso before school started to kick off her birthday bright and early. We went and chatted for a while over coffee and their delicious, amazing, oh-my-god-don't-tell-anyone-but-I-just-ate-some-heaven muffins. After we had breakfast and coffee and maybe a cookie or two for later, the tab crossed $10. I said, "Happy Birthday!" and I slid my credit card over the counter. Calypso regulars will feel my pain. I pretty much fall asleep during long car rides so the drive from San Antonio to Corpus Christi was no exception. Stopped by this place last minue and decided to grab their Vietnamese coffee. Oh wow! I came across this place while exploring CC and looking for a bookstore. It's located right next door to Half Price Books. The cafe is large and bright, the coffee selections are plentiful. I had a cafe mocha along with a chicken salad on a bagel and some tomato basil soup. Everything was tasty, although I wish I had tried the Vietnamese coffee. The staff were very friendly. I was looking for a place to do some work, and was able to fenagle a plug along the side wall. The only thing it is lacking is wi-fi. Would've been 5 stars if it had wi-fi. Updated: I tried the Vietnamese coffee. I'm a bit of a snoot when it comes to Vietnamese coffee, but Cafe Calypso did a good job. My favorite coffee shop in all of Corpus Christi while I was in grad school!! The staff is friendly and outgoing and I loved sitting there to do work while listening to the staff warmly welcome newcomers and regulars. It's connected to the Half Price Books, which gives it a comforting, casual-library vibe. The drinks are delicious, whether you're just getting an iced tea or a fancy mocha - for the mocha, always get the whipped cream and chocolate chips! The only downside is the lack of outlets, so make sure your laptop is fully charged. Lots of different drinks to try, but make sure you have cash on hand. There's always something fun on the walls and interesting people to talk to. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting/living in Corpus! read more

As a Corpus Christi resident for 10 years but now exiled to England my first and last point of call when flying into or out of town has to be Café Calypso. Go there a few times and "everyone knows your name!" Go there a few more times and they will be pouring your favourite drink when they see you coming across the car park. The home made cakes are truly home made, a rarity these days of pre packaged, micro waved cardboard. There is a resident chess "gunslinger" waiting to take on anyone that wants to claim the fastest pawn in town. Or you can browse the books from Half Price Books. BEST COFFEE IN TEXAS! This is a locally owned shop, the one and only. The owner, Erdal, is from Turkey and takes great pride in making the best coffee around. He does all of his own roasting in small batches and the quality really comes through in his brews. They also make a huge variety of drinks (espresso based, brewed coffee, tea, Italian sodas, etc) and even take special requests. The staff is super cool. They'll get to know you pretty quick and there's even a bunch of die hard regulars who store their own mugs there. It has a good central location in Moore Plaza on SPID & Staples, inside Half Price Books. On Friday and Saturday they also have live music by local musicians out to have a good time. There's no wifi, they only take cash and checks, and it may lack that typical "coffee-house" ambiance, but that doesn't bother me one bit. This place is seriously a diamond in the rough of coffee houses. My friend and I just needed our quick coffee fix for the night and decided to stop by at a cafe we'd never tried before. Upon entering the cafe, you just get this lived-in, effortless, carefree and light vibe from the cafe. The cashiers were really nice and efficient. I ordered a Large Americano with an extra shot and a little bit of room for cream and sugar. She gladly gave me the extra shot and even whipped out the half and half for me, which I really appreciated. My friend got some kind of blended iced coffee with whipped cream and chocolate chips. The people studying at that cafe seemed to be at ease and looked like regulars, not exactly distracted by any outside customers or live performers. Apparently on Saturdays they have live performances, and there was this one man who brought out his guitar and mic and started off his set playing a smooth and romantic Ed Sheeran "Thinking Out Loud" song. He was pretty good ! Overall, I loved this place. The Americano was really good, probably some of the best I've ever had. I believe it's right next to Half Priced Books, which is convenient bc you can lounge around and look for books while getting your coffee. Pretty mod place, I have to say. The vanilla latte was just alright. I felt rushed when ordering and the menu is huge. I may had ventured out, but it felt like I was an inconvenience to the staff. The tea was from a bag. Yes. Yes yes yes. Great coffee house, connected to Half Priced Books. I tend to get restless so if there's a lot of traffic or if my order takes a while, I like to peruse the art books section, which is only a few feet away. This is where I go to get my sweet fix. I should give this place a lower rating for giving me an awful Vietnamese coffee addiction, but I can't bring myself to. The sweets are absolutely wonderful - the owner makes great rum cake and German chocolate cake and god it is hard to pick which ones are good. The Turkish coffee is also very good, but due to new staff at the time of writing, the owner has to make it, who is only at the store from opening to about three p.m. Also, their one vegan baker has left for college about a year ago - so there's not too much by way of vegan goods (she also made peanut butter dog biscuits for pet owners! My dog loved them.) The staff are very sweet and don't mind talking, especially if you're a regular or ask questions pertaining to what they make. They're not very snooty and generally give a good, concise explanation about the different drinks they make. Bonus for diabetics or folks that watch their blood-sugar (my mom is diabetic:) there is a very nice selection of sugar-free syrups for your coffee, Italian soda, and just about anything you can think of. They make at least two or more desserts with Splenda sweetener as well. Forewarning: They do not have a card reader. This is a cash-only establishment. I have been to this place since I was a little girl. The owners are amazing and very friendly! They feel like family to me! My parents come here several times a week, and I go about once every few months now. They serve italian cream sodas (mixed for you on the spot,) they roast their own coffee beans in house (which my family swears by!), and they now have baked goods (which are super delicious!!!) I am vegetarian and usually eat gluten free, and they have options for both limitations! This is hands-down, the BEST coffee place in town. (I am not a fan of coffee, but the rest of the stuff they have to offer beats that out!) They offer bagels with cream cheese, or chicken salad, and they also have croissants that they will toast up too. The coffee here is my favorite. I'm not sure what it is about this place, but every time I get a cup from here it tastes amazing! The little snacks to purchase are usually good, but I took a star away because it's cash only. We all know that's not convenient at times, and the ATM inside doesn't always work; but when it does, the fee to use it is pretty high which is a turn off. Yes. They have good coffee. However, their menu has changed very little except for the semi-new addition of desserts. Cakes are kept in the cooler which can give them a weird texture and the cookies/dried out brownies are not something to write home about. The sandwiches (ham/cheese and chicken salad) are fairly decent if you're in a pinch. The Italian Sodas are sadly not very good either. There is on off putting aftertaste which I believe comes from the use of Club Soda. My thought on this would be to use a simple sparkling mineral water giving it a cleaner taste and letting the peach or raspberry syrup to shine. One good thing is the price of a bottle of water. read more
