So many vibes. I've been here but it's been a long time. In fact it was in their old location. Met up with some friends. They are vegetarian and we eat meat. So 3 of us ordered 2 meat dishes and they 3, ordered vegetarian dishes. We also ordered samoses (2 orders) and 2 lattes, and 2 baklava. Oh, they also ordered the stuffed jalapeño dish, which surprise was hot. All the food was delicious, even the two teenagers with us liked the food. It's got a good vibe inside and despite there being a pretty constant line we were seated within 15 mins. I would absolutely go back. Also - order the coffee, was hit with wonderful flavors served in this awesome ceramic mug.

Very unique experience! First time trying Ethiopian food & it was interesting. The flavors are quite strong & meat was tender. They don't give utensils unless you ask which is fun. The bread roll thing they gave was pretty acidic & dominated over the flavors of the meat dishes. Don't know if I love that. The sambusas were delish. Airy spacious restaurant but not a huge place so I imagine it gets busy.

Mr first time having Ethiopian cuisine, and now I'm wondering what took me so long. Walked a few short blocks from home in a Friday night, to find the place packed upon arrival. A good sign, and we sat after a short wait, and I could immediately see some of the reasons this place is popular. Service was quick and courteous, and provided some great recommendations for a first timer. Food and drinks came quick too. The vegan platter is a must for first timers, everything super flavorful. We started with polpetti, which were slightly spicy meatballs packed with flavor. The cuisine is mostly gluten free too, which is a plus for my wife and I, and they even have GF anjeera bread. Will be back again to try more before long!

My first time trying Ethiopian food and I LOVED IT!! The dishes are FULL of flavor! This family run cafe has been serving up East African cuisine in Oakland since 1991! Each dish was loaded with spices and I'm going to say it again, soooo much flavor. To be honest, we had no idea what to order or where to even start, so we got the sampler that our server recommended and it was soooo good. It was also a fun experience because we got to eat with our hands lol. If you're like us and completely clueless, go with the meat sampler because for $23, you get a HUGE portion and then can figure out which items are your favorites for next time. What we ordered: Meat Sampler ($23) * Doro Wot - spicy, slow simmered chicken stew * Doro Alicha - chicken stew in turmeric-based sauce * Sega Alicha - spicy beef stew * Minchet Wot - minced beef stew * Gomen - stewed collard greens We also got their Sambussas (half lentil and half beef), which were similar to samosas. Both their mocktails and cocktails were really well made too. I loved how they incorporated spices into the drink too, which was pretty unique. So if you're looking for a fun date night or just to try something new, definitely bookmark this place!

Drove up to Oakland since there's a lot of unique food places up here. This is my first time trying Ethiopian food and it did not disappoint. First off service was phenomenal, Gabriel, our server helped recommend some appetizers and the sampler since it was our first time. My favorite was the sambussa's. Crunchy and full of stuffing inside plus the chili dip. My favorite drink was the spritz. Sweet and refreshing. Overall I'd come back if I was in the area. There is something magical about walking into a place and immediately feeling wrapped in warmth before the food even hits the table. The high ceilings made the space feel airy, but the deep, rich colors on the walls made it feel like I had stepped into someone's home with incredible taste and a love for Ethiopian spices (hey line the wall like an art installation with sacks and jars everywhere). You can buy them separately, too. We came in as a group of seven or eight, and the staff handled our large party with ease. My standout dish was the kitfo. It was my first time having it and it was my favorite part of the meal! This is a place I will make a point to visit every single time I am in town. A lovely and fully immersive cultural experience from top to bottom.

The food was good and it was nice to have move vegan options. They bring out the tibs on a skillet like fajitas. The service was good and the restaurant has a good vibe. They bring out one dish that is sizzling with spices that perfuses the air and makes people cough which was a little off putting.

I got a chance to discover Ethiopian food for the first time at Cafe Colucci with some friends back in December. This location is in North Oakland - very conveniently located with lots of street parking options around (take note of the street signs and meters). There is residential parking on the side streets without meters. We showed up on a really rainy day and I was pleasantly surprised at the number of folks who still showed up to dine. This place is great for groups and gatherings- lots of open space and the aesthetic is very traditional with lots of Ethiopian art displayed on the walls everywhere including the bathroom Our server Jennifer was so personable and approachable- knowing it was my first time she was eager to guide me through the menu and educate me on injera. Our group was very eclectic as far as our dietary preferences...we had carnivores, vegans, pescatarians and vegetarians. What was impressive is the menu offered something for everyone! Everybody eats. I ended up ordering the shrimp tibs which simply was a plate full of sauteed shrimp and peppers (cooked to order) alongside some greens and injera. I ordered the non traditional injera which was gluten free and had less of a sour taste to me than the traditional. There was a great deal of shrimp on the plate- I scooped it up with the pepppers and injera for a delicious flavorful bite. The shrimp were nicely seasoned with their house spice which is also conveniently placed on your table should you want to add extra- the spice is also available to purchase. When I ordered the greens- in my mind I was thinking soul food greens..... silly me. LOL The greens were good and flavorful as well- more on the vinegary side for me. I would eat them again. We all ordered the Selassi spritz with fresh mint- it was made to order by our server. Light and refreshing. Overall, this is a great neighborhood place that serves classic Ethiopian fare and provides warm and friendly service and good food. Definitely a 10/10 experience and I will say that Jennifer (our server) is what took it to a ten! She is a gem!

This has been a restaurant that I have been wanting to visit for soooo long! I finally found the time to go with my bestfriend on a Thursday! Parking is on the street, but we didn't have trouble finding any. There was a short wait for a table; not bad at all. The place itself was very bustling with a lot of customers. The vibe was great! For the food, we ordered a vegan platter to share and half lentil sumbussa and half beef. All the food was yummy! I really liked the pepper seasonings that they leave on the table for you. The chili pepper was 10/10! The seasoning for the lentils on both dishes stood out to us the most. Overall, this place is good and I would recommend for people to try it out!

A true east bay gem! You must try café Colucci! The best Ethiopian restaurant around! The injara is plentyfull and the portions are huge. I felt as if I was actually at home. That's how they make you feel. From the moment you arrive until when you're leaving. Our waiter was top notch, and very attentive. Great for family and small parties alike. Or if you're feeling some dining alone it's also a perfect choice. You can also sit at the bar and enjoy your meal as well! Trust me you will be in heaven when tasting the dishes! And you'll leave satisfied full and happy!

Cafe Colucci is so consistently solid the few times I've been with friends and family. It's such a great place to introduce those who've never have Ethiopian food before. They're also super generous with their injera and portions are big. So be prepared to leave full! The restaurant space is also beautiful and open. I always enjoy our dining experience. I'm a newfound fan of Ethiopian food! Getting together with one of my friends, we decided to get Ethiopian food since she'd never had it before. It was a pleasant time and we enjoyed Cafe Colucci. We arrived for dinner on a weekend. I brought my pup so we sat outside, you have to walk through the restaurant to get outside. Inside was spacious, big, and can get quite loud since it's a bustling spot. Outside was roomy, casual, and chill. The mural outside is gorgeous as well. The service was nice, we'd occasionally get checked in on, and food came out at a decent time. The workers were sweet and they complimented my pup. My friend and I shared the Denitch Tibs and Vegan Combination. The chips were crispy, parts of it on the softer less fried end, and a nice savory seasoning. The sampler was perfect for us to share. A balance of savory, slightly sweet, a bit sour vegetarian dishes. The injera was light and rolled thinner than other spots I've been to. Everything was good and we took some to go. Cafe Colucci is a popular spot for authentic Ethiopian food! The vibes are quite nice and the food is great. I wouldn't mind coming back. With it being off San Pablo Ave. parking is street only.

We tried Cafe Colucci after work based on a coworker's suggestion and it was so yummy! We were seated really quickly and our server Emily was so nice and friendly. She had great recommendations and we wanted to try everything. I ended up going with the Assa Gored Gored and my friend got the Vegan Sampler/Combo plate. We shared the lentil Sambussa and a Selassie Spritz too. Overall, it was such a great vibe and a delicious dinner!

This is my favorite Ethiopian spot in Oakland. I've been going to Café Colucci for over 10 years and I still cannot get enough of it. Now that we are in Covid times I am happy to order online and even pick up from the location. They have plexiglass installed hand sanitizer available so I feel very safe picking up my very favorite Friday night dinner. My favorite dishes are the Messer Wot, I love love love the Buticha and we also order the doro tibs and sambussas. The house injera has a wonderful texture and is always fresh. The portions are large so we always have enough for the next day. They even sell the spices with the Burundi spice company so you can try your hand at making your favorite dishes at home. I'm not that brave just yet as why mess with perfection? I will say it's very tempting if I can some how level up my culinary skills. If you've not tried Cafe Colucci yet, honestly I don't know what your waiting for, it's the absolute best. read more

I can't believe I never went here before having lived in the area most of my life!! It's been around since 1991. Great tip, they are open late! Check hours online. Our family of two adults and one hungry teen ordered the vegan combo and the meat combo. It was more than enough food. Everything was super tasty and delicious. We got it with the traditional bread but you can order a wheat version if you prefer. Service was friendly. Waitress didn't bring us plates or napkins. You eat with your hands here so utensils aren't typically provided but we could all use a napkin. Got the plates on request and went looking for napkins myself! If you like cafe lattes theirs are delicious and so was the basil lemonade. This business also is affiliated with a woman owned, Ethiopian owned spice company in Ethiopia! They have a lot of photos and info about the enterprise and you can also buy spices on site. Would definitely recommend! read more

Years ago I used to stop by this spot to grab Ethiopian coffee and it was fantastic. My husband and I were craving Ethiopian food on Friday night and decided to check this spot out. I called them -- and the number listed on Yelp is wrong. Then I looked up Cafe Colucci online and found the correct number. I let them know that they need to change the number on Yelp and they said they recently changed their number and would take care of it soon. They said they're not currently taking phone orders and to order online via their website: cafecolucci.com. I ordered online and then "checked in" on Yelp when we drove up. The app said the "check in" deal was 20% off one dish. I asked the guy who I picked up the food from if they could honor it -- but since I paid online through the site, it was challenging to figure out so I didn't get to use it. No worries! I appreciated that the site I ordered on gave a time estimate and the food was ready to go. It was already bagged and organized when I pulled up. We'd ordered the meat combo (for husband) and veggie combo (for me). I'm not vegetarian (I just don't eat beef), but I love vegan/vegetarian Ethiopian food. We also ordered the vegetarian sambussa and extra injera. We got the house injera but they do offer gluten-free injera. We had enough food to eat it twice -- and I even used the extra injera with some brown masoor dal I'd made myself the day before for lunch today. So we essentially got 5 meals out of the four dishes. The veggie combo came with what-is-the-equivalent-of two dal/lentil dishes and a veggie curry. There were two small sides in the box. Overall, good food and I'll be back! read more

We've been to several Ethiopian restaurants in the Bay Area, and Cafe Colucci shines high above the rest. Some are meh. Others are adequate, and even a few are delicious. But Cafe Colucci is next level in terms of flavors, creativity, and overall quality. Food is not just delicious, but also refined. This is my ALL TIME favorite Bay Area restaurant (and my partners). I typically get the vegan sampler platter and beef tibs. My partner always gets lamb tibs. This spot is one of several Ethiopian food places on the road. I was very intrigued by their apps and platters so we planned a hike in the area and lunch here. We were not able to sit outside so we took it home and the smell of the food was teasing us good. I LOVE THE MEAT PLATTER!! We didn't get the veggies one this time but I will definitely come back for it. The food is so flavor and the meat is well cooked. The beef and lamb were my favorites, personally I find the injera too sour for my taste so I tried it with indian roti and plain rice so that allowed me to really taste the meat more and get a feel for the spices and flavors. I still finished off the injera. Maybe as a non-native eater I just couldn't do the whole platter with injera so if you feel the same, I'd recommend to switch off with rice or something with a neutral taste. We also had their honey wine. It was very sweet and tasty! read more

What a wonderful Mother's Day venue! First time at the Cafe; sat in the outdoor covered patio area. Beautiful day, nice server and terrific food (priced right!). Ordered a Vegan combo platter and added Assa Tibs (fish). Had a couple of sides, too (we were hungry) - Vegetarian Sambussa and Dentich Tibs (sort of like thick potato chips with seasoning). At the end of the meal, nothing but bones left (and those were picked clean!) It was a busy day, so service was a little delayed, but everyone was so nice, and we were not in a hurry. Great meal. Ethiopian food is one of my favorite cuisines and this spot did not disappoint! I had their veggie sampler (which is usually my go to Ethiopian dish) and it was excellent and spicy. After discovering you moved, my curiosity was piqued. The new space is larger, fresh, and inviting. It includes a back patio too. The food was just as good as I remember, although a bit more pricey and smaller portions. The addition of cocktails is a hit. the food was so delicious it was definitely an exciting experience. we were a party of six and we ordered two platers with a whole tilapia. EVERYTHING WAS SO AMAZING!!!!! our server was very nice and the food came out moderately quickly. the outside seating was very, very pretty and cute and the inside was really nice too. the food was actually the best ethiopian food i've ever had and i've been to quite a few ethiopian restaurants. i highly highly highly recommend this restaurant. if you are in town, go to this ethiopian restaurant it will NOT disappoint. read more

I have enjoyed dining here a few times pre-COVID. I even introduced Ethiopian Food to my family by dining here. Friendly people and service. I even would get cravings and get takeout from here. Now with the new restrictions happening. They have easy online ordering and contactless pickup. Right now they do not accept cash and payment. I placed my order online and they had my order ready on time. They changed the front door as a pickup window so that you don't have to enter the restaurant. This is quick and easy and wonderful way to grab your food and go. I love the meat and veggie combos because you get a bit of everything. I love pairing up the veggie combo with some meat dish. All dishes are great and have great flavor. The House Injera is fresh, soft and not too sour. Assa Gored Gored-Fresh light white fish. Nicely sautéed with great flavor of rosemary, onions, garlic, lemon and jalapeño. Sega Tibs-One of my go to meat dishes. Sautéed beef cubes with fresh tomato, onion, jalapeños and rosemary. Veggie Combo-I love all of the flavors. Hard to decide which is my favorite, so I just get the combo. Azifa(lentils in Ethiopian mustard), Buticha(chickpea mash), Messer Wot(Spicy split lentil), Kik Alicha(Split pea in turmeric sauce), Gomen(sautéed collard greens) and Atakilt(Cabbage, potatoes and carrot mix) Café Colucci is a great spot for Ethiopian cuisine. read more

Food is just amazing... aromatic, spices just absolutely incredible. They make their platter so beautiful. They are my first love for Ethiopian food. Service is always incredible! Went to cafe colucci last night with a friend. When I sat down my friend wasn't with me yet, but I would have expected to be offered water or a menu. Unfortunately, I wasn't offered either and when my friend arrived we still weren't brought a menu or water. I had to ask the person who cleaned off the table next to me to bring water and menu's. I've been to cafe colucci a few times since living in oakland and it's been fine but tonight the service was terrible. I noticed a lot of white customers in the restaurant and had to wonder if my friend and I (two queer black folks) just weren't the kind of people who should be at the restaurant. Food was okay, I felt like the veggies were a bit under seasoned. They have gluten free injera which in appreciate. I'll stick to ensarro which is closer to home for me anyway. read more

When it comes to Ethiopian food, Café Colucci does it justice. The flavors are definitely there, but the service and small portion sizes are what's bringing them down for me. There are so many Ethiopian food spots in the neighborhood, but it never hurts to try something new. Café Colucci is one of the more popular spots for Ethiopian cuisine in the area, but I am just now finally getting around to trying them out. The verdict?! As a whole, I would rate them as just average. Let's start with what's working for them: *Ambience: I felt really comfortable dining at the restaurant. The décor is charming and kind of reminds me of a village hut. The main dining area has an ample amount of seating and their front patio is the perfect for enjoying your meal on a nice day. *Cuisine: The vegetarian combo that I had here was very tasty! The lentils were wonderful, the gomen was good, and the atakilt melted in my mouth as it always should. I wasn't a huge fan of the salad azifa salad. It overpowered everything else in my opinion. The injera was a little on the thin side, but it was still spongy with a mild sourness. And, for what needs work: *Portion sizes: I've been to quite a few Ethiopian restaurants and this one by far has had the smallest portion sizes. I'm used to having my entree served on a bed of injera, but Cafe Colucci serves it in a small tin bowl. It was really weird and a little disappointing considering how much it costed. Even the amount of injera that I was given was an upset. Of course the injera will fill you up, but with these small portions, you might still be left hungry when you're finished. *Service: Seriously lacking. The lady who took my order was nice but she just wasn't on it at all. Service was extremely slow. I was one of the first people to come into the restaurant, but it still took her a long time to take my order. It took forever for the food to come out and when it finally did, nobody came by to ask me how I was doing or to refill my water. I actually had to get up and go to the front register to close out my tab. Not sure if that's how they do things here, but why start with table service and end without it? It was really confusing and kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. With so many different Ethiopian choices on the block, I was expecting a lot more from them. Looks like the ownership has changed. Compared to our pre-pandemic experiences, food quality is down 10X, prices are up 3X, and the location simply cannot justify the prices they are charging. This is a ripoff as the food quality is simply not there read more

The minute you enter you already feel great choosing to eat here. The dining area is lovely, welcoming and stimulating! The music adds to the mood and theme! Service is A+ and very friendly! Great choice for a first date w a super lovely woman! She ordered the vegan sampler and I did the meat sampler and combined both in one tray. Paired it w Honey Wine! Wow! All the flavors are full on stimulating and satisfying! Prices and value are amazing! There's also an outdoor patio dining area. Oh boy oh boy! It's very exciting that Cafe Colucci moved into our neighborhood. My housemate and I have eaten there once a week since it opened and each meal has been delicious. The owner is lovely and all the neighbors are excited to have them in the neighborhood. I had been getting take-out only and last night ate in the outdoor garden. Again, the food was super thoughtfully prepared and staff came by numerous times to see how we were doing. The back garden was quiet and warm with a heater. Highly recommended. read more

Cafe Colucci is such a great find! I can't believe I've been sleeping on this place for so long. First of all, the establishment itself is super cute - they decorated the interior and exterior with vibrant, fun colors that immediately feel inviting. The food, of course, was absolutely incredible! I ordered the veggie combo platter (they have the option to make it gluten free!) and an Ethiopian iced coffee. Let me start with the coffee, because I was so excited by this! I consider myself somewhat of a coffee connoisseur, and I was incredibly satisfied by this coffee. It was a light-roast, smooth coffee with fruity notes and an almost buttery aftertaste. Coffee lovers rejoice! The veggie combo was a delight. It came with four different stews, a soft, leafy green vegetable, pickled cabbage, and a side of teff injera. Each of the stews and vegetable had bold, warm, aromatic flavors unlike anything I've tasted before. The teff injera was tart (similar to the tartness of sourdough) and it, along with the cabbage, balanced out the heavier flavors in the rest of the dish. I was in love from the first bite! Cafe Colucci is an excellent restaurant to meet up with friends or family and have a great feast. I've never had Ethiopian food, and my friend who recommended this restaurant said this is the standard for good Ethiopian food. I gladly agree! For three people, we spent around $60. This was hiked up due to us getting honey wine, which is just downright amazing and different than mead in a pleasant way - it is more sweet, less harsh, and seems more alcoholic, if that makes sense. Would definitely recommend getting the Honey wine on a date. We had the Veggie Sampler, and for three people, it was more than enough. The bread they give you is around half the dinner and it has a spongy, crepe-esque, sourdough texture and flavor. The sampler explored the palate and provided great bonding opportunities for us. Would definitely recommend. The place seems like it has seen better days, but the interior is by no means run down. It is merely showing its age a bit. Ordered take-out during COVID regulations, and it was just as good at dining in. They provided 2 baggies full of Injera bread, which was more than enough. Cafe Colucci never fails to satisfy my cravings for Ethiopian food -- as someone who is plant-based, it's so easy! I always get the veggie platter, which is super filling. 10/10 as always! Cafe Colucci is my go-to Ethiopian restaurant in the East Bay. I love all the flavors in their veggie platters. Right now, end of October 2020, they are only offering to-go options, and you must order online. Pick-up is at the right of the normal entrance. Unfortunately I didn't see an option for their flax drink which I enjoy. Everything is delicious, nothing too spicy, but super flavorful. I highly recommend. read more

I love this place! I have a large appetite but I can never finish the plate. I usually get the veggie and the meat platter and share it with another person. Their flax seed juice is unlike any juice I've ever had. First off, I feel like it's great for my hair - lol -- but apart from that it has a very frothy, earthy and refreshing flavor. Established in 1991.

Café Colucci has been serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine to the Bay Area since 1991. Founded by Fetlework Tefferi, the restaurant began in Oakland with a mission to share the rich culinary traditions and hospitality of Ethiopia with the local community. In Ethiopian culture, food is meant to be shared and enjoyed together. Meals are traditionally eaten with injera, a soft sourdough flatbread made from teff flour, and are built around vibrant spices and slow-simmered dishes. Today Café Colucci continues this tradition at its Oakland location at 5849 San Pablo Avenue. Many of the spices used in our kitchen come directly from Ethiopia through Brundo Spice Company, working with farmers to source organic spices that bring authentic Ethiopian flavor to every dish. For over 35 years, Café Colucci has remained a gathering place for the community and a celebration of Ethiopian food and culture.

Meet the Business Owner: Fetlework T.

Fetlework is the founder and culinary force behind Café Colucci. Originally from Ethiopia, she brought her passion for traditional Ethiopian cooking to the Bay Area and opened Café Colucci in 1991. For over three decades, she has dedicated herself to sharing the rich flavors and cultural traditions of Ethiopian cuisine with the community. Fetlework believes that food is sacred and deeply connected to hospitality, family, and culture. Her cooking reflects generations of Ethiopian culinary knowledge, combining carefully blended spices, fresh ingredients, and traditional cooking methods. She is also the founder of Brundo Spice Company, which works directly with farmers in Ethiopia to source organic spices used both in Café Colucci’s kitchen and in homes across the country. I think I've eaten at the majority of Ethiopian restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco, so I'm a fan. I got the Chicken Tibs and Beef Tibs. The beef was spiced, but the chicken tasted bland and watery. Both seemed to be missing salt. The beef tibs was tougher than I'm used to. Maybe it was an off day. The Yemisir Wot (stewed red lentils) was flavorful. The vegetarian combo was a complete miss for the price and the portions were super small. The Tikil Gomen (cabbage, carrots, potatoes) looked like one tablespoon had been scooped out and put on the injera. It came with Yemisir Wot, Yekik Alicha (yellow spiced lentils), beets(???), Gomen (collards), and green salad (though I don't remember getting the green salad in my combo). The Gomen (collards) were super bland and tasted like reheated frozen collards. My last issue is that the a-la-carte items are photographed with a small salad and injera, pretty standard (see attached image from site). Unfortunately, the a-la-carte options came singularly in a container with a side of injera. Bummer. If I hadn't included the vegetarian combo, I probably would've been even more upset. What I did like: --- - The Tikil Gomen and Yemisir Wot were well spiced and tasty. - Plenty of injera, almost too many. I think my biggest issue is that given the portion size, most items are between $16 - $24, so if you're looking to have a rounded meal (injera, vegetables, meat), you're going to have to order multiple items and that adds up fast; it will be cheaper if you just eat in or call them and order for pick-up. (I'm also kind of bummed because I was rooting for them since they are in the space where Casa Vallarta used to be.) If you plan to go, I'd suggest sticking to the vegetarian options.

Tonight was our last night eating dinner at this place. Over the years (about 25) I have been going to Cafe Colucci. It used to be my all time favorite. I have been to other Ethiopian restaurants to compare and by far this was the best. The last 10 years it has been hit or miss, sometimes being- yes so good as always and then- to what? Did they change a cook or something- or seasonings...We had been going to Barcote -(directly across the street) which is now our new favorite and thought- lets give them (Cafe Colucci) another try, maybe they were having issues with the kitchen...tonight was the absolute worst food. The chicken was a weird rubbery texture with equal amounts of onions as a filler- seasonings were barely there- watered down...the romaine lettuce was substituted with iceberg lettuce..??? WTH?!! The veggie combo tasted old- Gomen, again no seasonings like before- almost like it was just boiled down with water and salt. The injera tasted old and sour and stuck to the paper...not soft and fresh- again- like we are used to. The best part was the veggie sambussa which was decent- not their best but was the only thing we ate and could enjoy. They were out of denitch tibs once again like so many times before which added to the list of reasons (The main one being the flavor of the food as a whole) but when things weren't available on the menu like denitch tibs, eggplant tibs, veggie sambussa, etc.....added to why we went elsewhere. I don't see the same familiar faces like we are used to either.....Food is just old period!!!- I am sad because what was once a great place to enjoy mouthwatering food is now the biggest let down. I kick myself for not going to Barcote tonight- which is soooo flavorful with every bite. They don't have the same veggie sambussa's and denitch tibs or use sour cream which made us miss our old Cafe Colucci but in hindsight everything so far that we have tasted at Barcote is phenomenal....The only place now that to me is a 5 star.... read more

I've come to Cafe Colucci countless times at the Telegraph location between 2011-2019 and every time was amazing; the food, ambiance and the staff of beautiful Ethiopian women from its prior ownership. I've always recommended this place. Now, after visiting the San Pablo location, my disappointment goes as is: On a slow evening, there were more than enough servers to cover occupied tables, but for some reason service was very slow. Our food came out fast, but again, the servers were slow. The food itself wasn't like under the prior ownership...The Tibs platter was extremely oily and I'm afraid the shrimp wasn't fresh as it smelled fishy. This is a platter that I regularly ordered from the prior ownership and never had complaints previously. Noticeably, the restaurant has lost its Ethiopian charm, as there are no longer beautiful, graceful and feminine Ethiopian waitresses, but SJWs that work there and expect you to tip them for merely bringing food from the kitchen counter to the tables and not provide any REAL customer service. This place was on our radar for a long while before we finally went with a friend from Seattle. After their recommendation we had to go... as we've never been to a city with more Ethiopian restaurants than Seattle. On Capitol Hill alone there are over a dozen. The food and service here blew us out of the water. Injera was tangy and bountiful. The meat and veggie combos are great to split between two people (one not both... it's a lot of food). Never had a bad bottle of Tej here either (get the bottle or you'll wish you had after the the first sip of just a glass). All of the food is exceptionally fresh. I would definitely recommend this place for a fun date or for a different and exciting experience. I would recommend ordering the meat and veggie combo for first timers so you can try a little bit of everything and could easily serve three people. They serve it on a large round platter with a basket of doughy bread and it's actually really fun to eat with your hands. You almost feel like an artist with a palette while you put different combinations inside the dough to create different tastes. The food is DELICIOUS, and has a lot of flavor. 4 stars because the wait time each time I come is quite long, but the service is usually friendly. Cafe Colucci is a great Ethiopian restaurant but not the best one in the Oakland area. Their cool web site is a bit misleading, you tend to think the restaurant is up scale when it is far from that. However, the food and the service is good. The tables (see pictures) are very interesting and add to the enjoyment of first timers. The staff are very friendly but the kitchen doesn't perform too well when the restaurant is full so have some patience. The food selections are wide enough and what I had was very tasty. Everything I've had here has been good. The vegetables and spices are fresh and vivid. I think this is better than any Ethiopian food in DC, which people always say has the largest Ethiopian population outside of Ethiopia. I've had the veggie combo, the lamb tibs, the doro alicha, and the kitfo. The doro alicha and the lamb tibs stood out. Ethiopian dishes seem pretty standardized to me, so maybe it's the freshness of the ingredients that makes this place a cut above. For vegetarians, always go for the veggi combo, and I recommend the mushroom tibs, and the miser wot (although most people I go with swear by the mitten shuru, i'm not a big fan of it) The meat can be a little lower quality than their delicious grains and spices. I came here the other day just to grab some coffee on my lunch break. The coffee was really good and strong. I looked at their menu and decided to try some of their food for takeout. But I still like this place it has a bit of charm and is at the better end of the market. Oh and ... Eating food with your hands is a unique experience by itself, and when the food happens to be delicious, exotic and tasty, it just makes it better.
