Did a Doordash order from here on 6/1/23.....One item was unavailable so someone wrote on the check that they would reimburse me ($15 for a jar of Niter Kibbeh). I have called three times and was assured that they would credit me for this but haven't seen it in my credit card bill---really annoying and very poor business practice. We were in the area doing some shopping and decided to take advantage of the Ethiopian food scene around Berkeley. Yelp directed us to Cafe Colucci. I am extremely unaccustomed to eating at restaurants now, this being the third time I "dined in" since the pandemic started. Happy to say that Cafe Colucci has a nice outdoor setup that you can take advantage of if you're lucky. It was a cold night, so we didn't have to fight for a spot... Food is served in ~10" round tins, lined of course with injera and covered with whatever dish you order. Note that they don't even bother to give out utensils, so be prepared to eat with your hands (which you typically would do anyway, but...) We ordered meat samplers, vegetarian samplers, beef tibs, potato tibs, and sambussa. The two samplers were both very good, with a variety of flavors and textures. Nothing in either dish stood out as outstanding but I really like the variety. Beef tibs was my favorite of the main dishes. The bold flavor of the beef pieces and onions really stood out. The sambussa appetizer (I think we got the vegetarian one but am not positive) had a great crunchy texture but a mild flavor. The potato tibs turned out to be an excellent plate of homemade potato chips. I don't know what I was expecting, but this was a really delightful a surprise. Warm, crunchy, thick-cut potato chips are an excellent way to scoop stews from your plate, either with your injera or as a replacement. Overall a very good meal, and I'd happily head back if we're in the area again. read more

Having been longtime customers of Cafe Colucci we just tried the new location and it was an excellent experience. The food was even more delicious than ever, high quality, and healthy. The manager there attributed this to the expanded and upgraded kitchen facilities allowing a better environment for the chefs and food. It's absolutely the best Ethiopian food in the Bay Area and that I've ever had. The space is colorful and visually interesting with bags of exotic spices and cookbooks on display. And there is more indoor and outdoor space that the previous location. The prices are lower than most Bay Area restaurants especially considering the quality of the food. We got take out from here after a hike and wow I never realized how much I missed the Ethiopian cuisine. So much food, quick service, and so delicious. We got the vegan combo platters--one for each of us. I think each platter could feed 3 people by itself. I would definitely order extra injira for the combo platters--they come with one big injira on the side and there's one at the bottom of the curries. The only curry I was not a fan (Azifa) of was the one with enough horseradish to kill my nasal cavity, but luckily it was the smallest of the curry portions. Everything else was amazing. read more

Everything was fitted into a metal tin with a paper top. I knew something was off when the bag felt so light. There was just enough to taste everything. Been here many times since it's my cousin's favorite spot. We always get the Tibs - in every type of meat!! I've tried some of the other stuff but it's just not the same! I do like the chicken tibs more than the beef tibs because the beef came out kind of try and chewy. We also ordered the whole fish, which I didn't like very much because there was not much meat on it and lots of fishy parts - bones and fins that I had to eat around. Also the taste was just okay, maybe there wasn't enough seasoning? I always always have to have the honey wine with my meal. The wine is just so delicious! The honey doesn't overpower the wine itself and also not too sweet. Love it with my meal. Every time we have been here, the service has been pretty good. They come around to refill waters and injera pretty often. I'm always stuffed when I come here. For three of us, we order about 2-3 dishes (1 being a veggie dish) and it's good enough for us. read more

The food here is so flavorful, both savory and spicy. The portions are large too so I had to take some of my Assa Gored Gored home. Their fried potatoes are basically like chips are are so delicious. I wish I could just order them as snacks from a store. By the way the staff here provide excellent service and found them to be genuinely lovely. Came here for dinner with a friend based on a recommendation from another friend. Good food with so so service. Food: really good. The vegetarian sampler is big. It's more than enough for two people. We took home leftovers. The flavors were amazing! Rich and bold. Spicy and creamy. Very good. We also ordered the kitfa served well done. It was ok and the serving was small so that was a bummer. Instead of regular injera we order gluten free injera. I like Ethiopian food and typically go to Asmara so I'm somewhat familiar with Ethiopian food. I couldn't tell the difference between regular and gluten free injera. It was good. We drank the telba. It was ok. Not amazing but it was bad. Next time I'm going to save $4.95 for something else. Prices: the vegetarian samples is a deal. Lots of food for a decent price. The telba was too expensive given the quality of the beverage and the kitfa was also expensive given the quantity of the dish. Also they charge $2 for an additional order of injera. I don't think Asmara charged me for more bread. Next time, I don't plan to order a drink or a meat dish. Customer service: if the food wasn't as good as it was, I'd given this restaurant 3 stars because the customer service was so bad. We had an early dinner so there were a lot of open tables but the server gave us our check before we were done with our meals and tried to take away the check twice before we paid. I had the feeling they wanted us out of the restaurant. We weren't loud or demanding so I don't understand why our server was so rude. Location: on the border of Oakland and Berkeley where it is possible to find street parking which is important to me. The interior decor was Ethiopian themed but most importantly they have an outdoor seating area with plants that give one the feeling of being in a garden which is always lovely. Overpriced crap compared to the previous location, and it's very obvious that ownership has changed (even though one of the servers--not from Ethiopia, just like most of the current staff that we saw--said otherwise). Started with providing me a different house red wine than I had ordered, without telling me initially that they had run out of that one. We ordered the "thinly sliced fried potatoes" appetizer, and a plate of (what looked like) potato chips randomly sprinkled with--rather bland--berbere spice showed up, for (what suddenly seemed like an exorbitant) $10. Half of those chips were so soggy in the center that I could easily fold them into halves, and the young female server told me that's how the dish is supposed to be! (Ahem....) In the entrees, the collard greens were stale, so much so that I got a bad stomach upset by late that night! The ground chickpeas were topped with creme fraiche, instead of the traditional Ethiopian crumbled cottage cheese that we know and love in more authentic places. The Doro Wot (national chicken dish) lacked oomph, for want of a better word. Miss the old place, and will not return to this one! read more

Great injera, great stew. I ordered a bunch of extra injera since it's my favorite part. The stew did taste just like lamb although I ordered beef. It was still great and I loved it but it is better if what you order and what you get are the same. The cabbage, potato, and carrot dish was not the way I like it- the carrots were the size of a baby carrot instead of a little slice, and I didn't eat any of the potato chunks since I was full from injera but they seemed very firm. After a lovely day at the Cal botanical gardens, my girlfriend's family wanted to stop for some ethiopian food. I've never had it myself so I was really excited to give it a try. We ordered 4 veggie platters and a meat platter to share for the table, and it arrived as one huge plate. There was unlimited injera to go around and it was rolled and perfect for scooping up the different sauces. I actually have no idea what I was eating, but it was delicious, and I couldn't get enough! I also really enjoyed their warm milk and honey drink, and it was desperately needed when I accidentally bit into a really spicy pepper. I'm now a definitely fan of ethiopian food and can't wait to go back! Service was super friendly and attentive, and the water was never empty. Prices are in the $10 range and very fair as far as I'm concerned. The restaurant has a large dining room and plenty of room outside as well. I would absolutely recommend it! It was our first time eating ethiopian food so we didn't expect that we were going to be eating family style and with our hands. Rather than having individual dishes for everything we ordered, they put it on one large tray and gave us a basket of bread. The bread they gave us was interesting in texture since it was spongey and tasted like sourdough bread, but it went really well with all of the dishes we ordered. This was my first experience eating Ethiopian food. I was mildly surprised at how amazing it was! I've had a few friends that weren't fans of Ethiopian food, but I'm glad I gave it a try. I had ordered the veggie plate for lunch, and just with the way I eat, two people can share it. It was an interesting experience eating with my hands (I use chopsticks for everything, even for wings) and found the food to be very tasty and rich with flavors. The restaurant was fairly crowded, and for a moment we were forgotten. :( We weren't mad or anything, but the server we had was extremely nice and apologized for forgetting about us. She offered to give us a free drink, and recommended the wine, which was AMAZING. It was extremely sweet, but it somehow didn't seem too sweet -- a weird contradiction, I know.
