Food - we ordered fried dalag fish (meaty), fried hito, tortang talong (eggplant) which was quite large and perfectly cooked, crispy pata, grilled pork belly, fresh vegetable lumpiang ubod (generous amount of crunchy ubod (bamboo shoot) sprinkled with crushed peanuts and chopped green mango with salted eggs. My favorites were the fresh lumpia and the tortang talong. The preparations were traditional and classic Filipino - no twists, no pretense. The prices were very reasonable. Just basic good food that won't break the bank.

Today it's a beautiful 3 story house at the top of the mountain overlooking Laguna Bay, Manila & Makati. We stopped at Buhay Kawayan to grab a late lunch w/my buddy, my wife & 2 brother in laws (yes they follow us everywhere lol). Buhay Kawayan is a very popular spot in Taytay on Manila E Road Barangay Pag asa. We ordered some of our favs like crispy pata, Bangus, squid adobo, veges dish w/bitter melon, yellow squash, okra, tomato, onion & garlic. Eggplant omelette & of course rice. Filipinos seem to eat rice @ every meal. (No Carbs when I return to the US). Excellent food & service one of the few Filipino restaurants that had quick service. They operated at a slower pace (Island life).

The dishes were shared equally among five people, and even then we had some for leftovers. We had chicharron bulaklak for our appetizer and it taste similar to the ones you'd find on the street, but made from cleaner ingredients. Our main entrees consisted of kare kare ( beef stew with peanut sauce), sisig (a skillet of pork and chicken), crispy pata (deep fried pig parts) and Filipino paella. The Filipino paella was absolutely delightful and it was enjoyed by everyone in my group. They made it Filipino style by adding tocino. The rice was also seasoned Filipino style and toasted to the perfect crunchiness. I highly recommend this dish. The other dishes were decent, but not as good as I expected. The kare kare seemed to lack too much of the peanut butter taste, which is needed to characterize the kare kare taste. The sisig was also lacking flavor, which I think stems from the meat used. Maybe it was a healthier version? The crispy pata was great and crispy! But the accompanying sauce needed more taste and kick to perfect the crispy pata. On the other side, their shakes were wonderful. We ordered all types of shakes and not only did they look beautiful, they tasted divine. For example, the mango and cheese shake is a weird combination, but they made it blend in the creamiest way. The shakes here are something that can be rarely found elsewhere! So for those on a budget but crave a bit of elegance, stop by here. It is also not as crowded as other malls yet since Vertis is so new!

They are better with Lechon Kawali Chips. For dessert, the Iday was very good. However, it's served skewered in a glass drinking cup. The suman was too hard to get out from the cup. I have to come back here on my next visit to try more dishes. Note: I put my bag on the floor next to one of the tall air conditioners inside. It got wet. The AC leaked water. It was a bit annoying. Staff wasn't very apologetic about it. They said they would 'look into it.'

We then dad a walkway. While we followed the walkway, there were koi fish to the right. When we entered the restaurant, the very first thing we noticed was that the restaurant had fans. It gets a bit warm without an air conditioner in the Philippines. I also noticed numerous foreigners or tourists at this restaurant. My cousin said for us to take in the experience. The second floor of this restaurant would be a nice place to reserve for a party during the winter time. We ordered appetizers. We definitely ordered the Alagao, which is an appetizer that they are known for. The Vanishing Laksa was fun to watch as the server poured the sauce on a mountain of noodles. I enjoyed the pomelo in the Pomelo and Catfish Salad. The Laing in the Pani Puri was my favorite appetizer. I loved the presentation of the appetizers. The Suman Itim was fresh and I enjoyed the texture of the suman. All of us enjoyed the experience. It was a Philippine Asian food fusion fest. The customer service, food experience, and view were 5 stars. The only reason I gave this place 4 stars is because we thought it was a bit too warm, and there were not enough fans to keep all of us comfortable. In fact, my cousin had to turn on her portable fan to keep cool. Also, my cousin and I really didn't taste any bagoong in the Pork Binagoongan.

Filipino mangoes and chocolate are two of my favorite things! Both dishes were tasty. I just wish that the mango dish came with more than one tiny slice. We had to order extra slices! What would be good is a mango chocolate Suman offering! Though, that may be too sweet for some people! May be one of each would be good enough to share with a couple people. We shared 2 dishes among 4 people and did not finish the entire thing. Their drinks were not my favorite. They were a bit too sweet for my taste. The calamansi drink I had was neon green, which I didn't really like. In my mind I anticipated something more fresh since calamansi is abundant here in the Philippines. My family members ordered the Thai iced tea, but that also looked green like a matcha latte! I was confused! So were they! This place also has a buffet, which looked like Filipino food. We didn't have lunch here. Just dessert! It's a cute place in the middle of nowhere. I never would have discovered this place if my cousin didn't take me here. They also make and sell their own homemade pottery! I love that! This place has that kind of artsy boho vibe to it. There are colorful textiles hanging from the ceiling. It looked like a mix of textiles from the Philippines, India, Thailand, and Bali! There's also a large mural outside when you walk in.
