The high-end food court has been a huge thing across the globe since the early 2010's, except in the Philippines. Back then, if you've been living in Manila for most of your life, the words "food" and "court" in the same sentence never really sounded appetizing. Enter Hole in the Wall. I've been here a few times already, but stepping inside its huge hip maze of interiors never ceases to excite me. I'm not sure if it's the thrill of choosing what meal to try next or just the nice aesthetic of literally everything, that excites me more. On my first visit, I made sure to first try the super popular fried chicken from Bad Bird. As a big fan Southern-style fried chicken, I wasn't disappointed. The crispy skin had a yummy seasoning that's new to the palette, very different compared to my other favorites, such as the Chickenjoy from Jollibee and the Pan Fried Chicken from Pancake House. And there's something about their side dishes that just completes the whole meal. The corn on the cob with bonito flakes, sweet and umami flavors melting in your mouth, was to die for. The coleslaw provided a nice acidic break from the saltiness of the chicken. The meal was a fun experience itself. Just the other day, I tried the Pastrami on Rye from Mr. Delicious and it was monstrous--just plain impressive in terms of size. I didn't even attempt to bite on the entire stack, using my fork and knife like a pretentious chick on a first date instead. Each bite off the monster-wich was packed with so many different flavors, though the pastrami still easily emerges as the hero of the dish. And let's not get started on the sweet potato chips. I'm not a big sweet potato-lover, but damn, the portion was more than satisfying. If there's anything I'd like modified, I just wish there was a bit more of the veggie pickles to cut through all the meat and fat. For now, I'll end this review right here. If it isn't yet so obvious, I'll probably be back here in no time to try a different food stall or two. read more

One of the better food halls in Metro Manila today. They have carefully curated food concessionaires which offers great food experience. They currently have a pop up stall called Fire in the Hole that serves wickedly spicy grub that is simply awesome. I got their Fish Head Laksa and although it made me sweat, it made my tummy quite happy. Good thing they also have outstanding dessert cookies at Scout's Honor which helped to cool down the deliciously spicy experience with the Laksa. read more

My jaw literally dropped upon arriving at this place. I couldn't understand what the fuss was all about when I first heard about Hole in the Wall... That was until I finally got to check the place out for myself. It's pretty much a "cool kids" kind of cafeteria. Well, to me, that's what it felt like. Really hip interiors, design, and furniture. I really like the fact that the servers roaming the area provide cold water, and extra place if needed. They also offer to wrap your unfinished food up when they've noticed that you are done eating. The choices of restaurants/stores here are of places I have not seen outside Century Mall such as Bad Bird (which sells the famous Umami Burger of theirs, and their corn on a cob is quite simple, PERFECT!), Scout's Honor, Posporo, Kwongs, Mr. Delicious, and many more! I've gone to Hole in the Wall more than four times, and I still need a bunch more visits to satisfy my curiosity with this awesome and quirky place. For Filipino comfort food, go for gourmet turo-turo Posporo. The Beef offers classic burgers, while Bad Bird has fried chicken served with their secret sauces. It's set up in the same way that the top floor of Japanese department stores are - once you get to the top of the mall you can meander through little food stalls that serve some really good food. The place has a clean, relaxed ambiance and their staff is really helpful. Try the fish tacos at Posporo, any of the burgers at the beef, the umami fried chicken plate (with dirty rice) at Bad Bird, or make your own cookie at Scout's Honor. Fun place! read more

Foodcourts are typically mundane affairs, populated by outlets that promise a food experience that, while usually far from fancy, are satisfying enough (taking the price point into context). Not Hole in the Wall. This place is fancy with a capital F. The modern looks, combining industrial elements with stone and wood, are optimized for Instagramming. The food selection does not fail the aesthetic promise, ranging from an amazing umami fried chicken (Bad Bird) to excellent Vietnamese (Phobobo). One stall even allows you to design your own cookies and match them with milk. Hole In The Wall is spacious enough to accommodate even large groups with ease. There is outside seating and a second floor. The smoking area is a few steps away, and gives a great view of the Century Properties development going on around. Ventilation is sufficient to ensure that you won't end up smelling like food, which is often a concern with other foodcourts. The great food and equally great ambience do come at a price, though. If you don't watch your budget, spending upward of PhP500 is easy (but worth it, in my opinion). This is a great place to take a date who prefers a cool vibe to a romantic one. read more

Let's get one thing clear: Hole in the Wall has got to be the most ironically named establishments EVER. Nothing about Hole in the Wall looks like a hole in the wall. Now that I got that off my chest, HITW is one of the best foodcourts in Metro Manila, if not the best. Sure, most of the outlets there are pretty pricey, but the food quality is simply brilliant. My personal favorites there are Scout's Honor (Cookies!), Smoky Bastard (LOCAL BEERS!), Mr Delicious (Insane sandwiches!), and Bad Bird (OMG Unami Fried Chicken!). The place itself is pretty cozy and lends itself to extended hangout sessions with your friends. I actually hanging out there at night, getting a table by the windows (or outside) and just soaking up the view of the rapidly-transforming Poblacion district in Makati. read more

Basically it's a fancy food court with many different concepts and a central eating area. Prices are high, but quality is generally good. The concepts inside are of course hit and miss since they're all different. Samples include: Mr. Delicious - Great sandwiches. Huge portions. Expensive, but good quality. Their sandwiches can easily be shared. The Beef - Burgers only. Dead simple. But since it's so simple, they keep it really fresh. Great flavor. A great burger. Posporo - Mexican food. Just average. This is one of the weaker concepts. If you're in the mood for Mexican, try Andale located just around the corner from Hole in the Wall instead for much better quality & value. Scout's Honour - Basically a high end take on girl scout cookies from USA. Huge variety, great quality. It's a bit expensive, but its worth it. Keep in mind that even though it's a "food court" they still impose a 6% service charge, do that drives the already high prices even higher. read more

Very tourist-friendly food court for a foreigner staying in Manila! After my American tummy was getting homesick from weeks of kamayan and lechon fiestas, Hole in the Wall was there when I needed it. If you want pizza, fried chicken, and burgers (that taste good), with a fusion kick, it's there. Best to go in a big group so you can try and share a little bit of everything. I have been a very big fan of Hole in the Wall since it opened. I just love the idea of elevating the status of foodcourt food into a whole new different level. Most of the time, the mention of food courts conjure images of dingy, greasy and suspiciously unclean premises, surrounded by rather dark and dank restaurants and foods stalls that sell really "malungkot" food. Malungkot food is how my friends and I would describe food that just looks sad and depressing - the kind of food that even the cooks cannot be bothered to beautify (Tropical Hut food, for instance, is malungkot to the highest level). It's not just about the presentation either. Qualities that make a malungkot is the meager amount of food on your plate, the absence of color and garnish and even just the general lack of life that makes food generally interesting. You won't find none of the malungkot food in Hole in the Wall. Everything here is executed very well, from the great interiors to the food itself, which are served by different concepts that have unique offerings. You will find different cuisines here, from Vietnamese Pho to Chinese noodles to Japanese-style umami fried chicken. You can pick your favorites from among the concepts that hawk their specialties here. There is something to enjoy for the entire family. read more

There's not much fancy-looking cafeteria-style establishments here in the Philippines, and Hole in the Wall is just that. If Singapore has Food Republic, then now we have Hole in the Wall. It has a really good range of cuisines to choose from upon entering plus it totally gets each person's cravings down. From a 'merienda', to a hefty lunch or dinner, to a bottle of beer, or a slice of cake or an awesome customised cookie plate. Aside from their food offerings, the place is very cool in design, their seating nooks change in theme but are generally in the industrial-type of design. The whole place is worthy of taking selfie shots alone or with your friends if you have any. I've tried the notable stores inside Hole in the Wall such as Bad Bird, PhoBobo, Mister Delicious, Scout's Honor, and Kwong's Provisions, to name a few and each had a good dish to be worthy enough to be Instagramed! If I were to recommend one dish from each it would be, Bad Bird's Umami Fried Chicken (and do get the 'chemical' flavoured chicken which only means its hells-spicy), PhoBobo's Beefy Beef Pho, Mister Delicious' Classic Reuben was a-mazing, Scout's Honor's anything there was good, and in Kwong's Provisions I particularly liked their Salted Egg Chicken Wings. Budget was pretty friendly enough if you stick to one dish, but if you're like me a "takaw tingin" kinda guy, then expect to shed about under a thousand bucks. Of course its best to go there on an empty stomach otherwise you'll be visiting the porcelain throne the whole night. read more

I LOVE the concept of Hole in the Wall - the first time I got inside I was floored by how pretty the place looked like. It makes you feel like you're in downtown Brooklyn, and that you're surrounded with so many bespoke looking shops. I love how the place doesn't have uniform seating. Couches, odd looking chairs, it's really the way Century Mall mixed and matched the look of things. It's unlike any other food court - for one you get some "butler" action with the waiters roving around the area to serve you water. (I mean who does that right? In most food courts, they don't even offer water.) The outdoor seating is beautiful especially during sunset. You can somehow see the skyline of Makati. I love the space as well - it's not cramped up so you can easily feel calm and freely discuss stuff with friends. read more

Perhaps the best-designed food court in all of the country, Hole in the Wall in Century City is a must-visit for those in the mood for a taste adventure. Upon entering the space, it feels as if you were transported into a much cooler Asian city but it feels good to realize that, "Oh wait, I never left Manila." Personally, it's about time we had a food hall like this. When you're done being in awe of the space, it's time to be in awe of the number one reason you're there in first place - the food. There's a Mexican joint, a burger place, a Chinese stall and so much more. The stall that practically has a line all the time is Bad Bird and a taste of their famous Umami Fried Chicken betrays the reason why that line always exists. Pair it with a side of waffle, corn, coleslaw or their dirty rice and you'll be thinking of the next time you'll be lining up again for that chicken. If you're into sweets, Scouts Honor at the entrance of the food hall is a must visit. They've got a make-your-own-cookie station and you can pile up your cookie with all the sweet stuff you can dream of. Hole in the Wall is changing the game for food courts and will get you excited to go to one again. Hole in the Wall is a nice food court on the top floor of Century City Mall. They don't have your usual fast food chains but instead offer more unique food experiences with their lineup of restaurants there. The place is nicely decorated with curated tables and chairs that sometimes don't match in a good way. It's a good place to go with friends and sample all the different places that you can buy food from. One of the things I like about Hole in the Wall is that there are waiters to assist you and serve you some water. Here are some of my recommendations for when you go to Hole in the Wall in no particular order: - Bad Bird: Get some of their Umami Fried Chicken. Get the Corn and Coleslaw plate and add 50 pesos for some hush puppies. The corn is covered in kewpie and bonito flakes and is a great complement and addition to the umami sensation you get from the fried chicken. - Posporo: Get some soft tacos. The beef cabeza is a winner. - Green Cheese: The matcha Japanese cheesecake is a great dessert. It delivers on the expected grassy matcha flavor. - Kwong's: Good Chinese food. I heard their chicken wings and soft shell crab are good. If you've eaten in Spring by Ha Yuan along Benavidez Street in Makati, then it's quite similar because it's the same owners. - Scout's Honor: Sorry, I haven't tried this place but I heard they are good. They sell cookies and you can also make your own cookies. - Mister Delicious: If you like sandwiches, this might be the place for you. - Phobobo: Sorry, I haven't tried this place but I heard they have some pretty solid Vietnamese food. - Liberation Shawarma: They have good shawarma and unlimited shawarma sauce if that's your thing. For me it's one of the better shawarma places in Metro Manila. We got the pork shawarma with rice and the serving could be good for two. Hole in the Wall is not your average food court. It's quite pricey but is a great place to go with friends to eat and hangout. The ambiance is nice and the place is nicely decorated. HITW is the arguably the best food court in the city right now-- and with good reason! Gone are the dingy tables and easy-to-clean tiles that are usually associated with food courts in malls like SM or Landmark, instead it's replaced by a variety of seating: from couches to wooden tables, solo tables and even a second floor dining area that also doubles as a function area for events. HITW's aesthetic is sure to please any hipster out there, and even my parents enjoyed it, likening it to the high class food courts found in other countries. HITW also offers alfresco dining with a splendid view of the Makati skyline (and er, some of the construction projects going around the area). The place also just started the HITWM quiz nights-- an online quiz testing a person's knowledge of restaurants in HITW, with prizes like an 18 piece bucket of chicken from Bad Bird, headphones and a 10,000 pesos gift check to HITW. Pretty great, dont you think? While the food is pricier than most food courts (ranging from 200-400 a meal), I think it's definitely worth it. Great for any group that can't decide what to eat, before stopping by for some live music at 12 Monkeys or catching a movie in one of the newest (and best) cinemas in Makati. read more

Manila needs more places like this. It's a space that's designed in a cool way - really young, energetic, and 'now'. And the selection of food and drinks here is really exciting. It's somewhat like a food court, but filled with really awesome small food businesses that are doing interesting stuff. It's great to come here with groups too because almost anyone can find something they like and everyone can pay their own way. There's also a good variety of cuisines - from Vietnamese to Chinese to Mexican to American. It's a good place to go for lunch or dinner with friends. And because it's located just below the movie theatre, it's a perfect place to go before or after a movie. The only thing is that I don't frequent this mall, so I don't get to visit very often. read more

Most of the food I've tried here are really good. The Chinese noodle place in the middle had really good dan dan mien. The chicken plates from Badbird are good too. The cookies were ok - a little pricey though. The éclair stall wasn't very impressive. I've yet to try the shawarma, pho and sandwich places. It seems like there is something for everyone here. The ambience is cozy and relaxing, family friendly and spacious. There are even waiters who serve you free water. It kinda looks like a hipster food court and a lot of the stalls here follow hipster aesthetics (that can be positive or negative I guess depending on the person). Having said that, it's refreshing to go to a food court where design was taken into consideration. I'd definitely come back to try the rest of the food and I highly recommend a visit to anyone passing through the area. read more

The interior of this place is great. If you come during peak times, the place is quite busy. For my two trips to this place, I did not enjoy the food. There were also several stalls whose signature items were out of stock. Maybe they should not have started their operations if their signature items were out of stock. Hole in the Wall is definitely the best food court in Metro Manila! I remember the first moment I set foot in this place. Not only was I amazed with the food choices, i was also amazed with the architecture and design. It looked like a town fused with a backyard-like feel fused with a modern dining place. It was very different themes combined into one and it looks really cool. The tables and chairs used are all very cool too. It looked like an upscale hispter food court. Even the outdoor seating they had was well designed. The look of the tables and chairs they used really made you feel like you were having dinner in some garden. They also recently used battery operated candles or fake candles. They would dim the lighting at a certain time and they would place these candles in the tables. It was a hip and fun aura turned into an intimate and quiet one. It was really clever as to how they could change moods in a snap. There are also waiters who clean tables and serve you water as well as napkins if you needed it. I guess you may say it's a food court for a higher market. Haven't encountered a food court with a waiter service in Manila before this one. Other than the really really really great food they offer here, I really love the architecture and design! I was so interested in checking out Hole in the Wall as my friend just wouldn't stop singing its praises. She works on Makati Ave. so she often finds herself here and she wanted me to see it for myself. On New Year's Day, my family and I happened to be at Century City Mall and as we wandered to the highest floor, I laid my eyes on what was Hole in the Wall, or their upgraded version of a food court. While the scent of cooked food is there just like a regular food court, it isn't a lingering, irritating type of scent. There's so much flavor and variety to scour through here.
