I feel sad to give this review. I had an earlier positive experience that brought me a bag on a rainy Saturday night In London. I was craving a burger and when presented with the menu, chose the beef burger. What was delivered to me was an overdone soupçon of beef. I immediately indicated that it would not be acceptable and could they recook the order. The very nice waitress indicated that is the way it comes and would not improve because the burger is not French cooking, and they don't want to cut other menu options with 'burger and fries'. I said why didn't they either take it off the menu or do it well? She indicated they didn't want to im. prove it but felt they needed a burger option on the menu. Huh?? read more

Not a very thrilling gustatory experience. My wife wasn't feeling well so she ordred a bowl of potatoes with nothig on them (and had to return them twice to avoid eating just raw potatos). I ordered four hors douvres for 10.95 pounds and completely misunderstood what I had ordered (a ramekin of very fishy-smelling crab, two different sets of sliced thin sausages, some blue cheese, some red-pepper coulisse and two slices of ham-- all served with some breads and croutons. All were served cold. Actually, there were plenty of things on the menu I could have tried, so I can only complain for making some bad choices. Given the location, however, across from St. Paul's, the place attracts a tourist trade and need not be known for haute cuisine. The service and ameince were great. read more

We arrived for a late evening meal when many other restaurants were just closing. Although we were among the last in the restaurant, you could not tell by the food that was served. Excellent taste and well prepared. The food was wonderful and affordable! Excellent view and service! read more

Ambience was great but the food only soso. My prefix included pate and mussels.pate was so so and unappetizingly prepared- mussels came out in a small individual pot but some of the buggers tasted a little funky/unfresh. After a cold walk around the St. Paul's area my cousin and I were ready for a hot cup of coffee and a tasty treat. Cafe Rouge was just the place to get us both and a break from the cold. Our cappuccinos were served promptly and sprinkled with just the right amount of cocoa, a nice surprise. We both got the pineapple tarte as well and it was the perfect afternoon pick me up. While taking a walking break from visiting St. Paul's Cathedral, we discovered this cozy little place. It was early, few people here, so no waiting. The staff was lovely and very quick. The prices are average for London, even on the cheaper side I would say. The afternoon tea was WONDERFUL! You may have tea or coffee and a sweet cake. We sat by the window and enjoyed the view and people watching. It was one of the most relaxing parts of our trip. read more

This branch of Cafe Rouge always seems a bit uncertain of its identity: right opposite St Paul's Cathedral, its customers are a mixture of tourists and people meeting after work. The result is that it hasn't got a lot of atmosphere, and feels much more obviously part of a chain than the Greenwich branch. Having said that, you get the usual middle-of-the-road Cafe Rouge food, which is handy when you fancy something quick but not junk-y, and the service is generally very pleasant. All in all, it's an unremarkable but not unpleasant place for a drink or a light meal. read more

For a central location and a restaurant chain you really could do much worse than this Cafe Rouge. I have been here several times - at various times of the day with different numbers and types of customers and every time the service has been good, the food has been hot and tasty and the staff have been accommodating. For such a central location with capacity to fit in a lot of customers (I'd say at least 80) - it could all so easily go wrong but this is by far one of the best Cafe Rouges I have been to. read more

Myself and three colleagues were aiming for GBK next door to this branch of Cafe Rouge, which was closed for refurbishment. Unfortunately for us we dived in out of the rain and ordered various items for lunch. Well at least it was dry in there (thats the reason for the star). Ghastly, uninspired food with service to match ( note to the chain: you don't HAVE to be an insouciant waiter in a French restaurant). Real end of the pier experience. When I stepped inside here I thought like I'd come in off the streets of Paris. I was here for early lunch so I could either order off the breakfast or lunch menus. There's a lot to choose from and I settled for free range eggs served vegetarian style with mushrooms, spinach, tomato and avocado. It was good - the eggs were a little on the firm side but the portobello mushrooms were meaty, tomato cooked perfectly, spinach wilted but not limp and the avocado was fresh. It was nice and I didn't have to wait too long. But once noon arrived, so did the people. It got busy and noisy quite quickly but it's a good sized place so the bustle added to the charm. I like the French touches - the window signage is in French, in the bathroom facilities are for "madame" and "monsieur". I understand this is one of several around London so I wouldn't hesitate to visit this or another location again - thank you. read more

French, dim lit, jazz, baguette at the door, oh my! Purrfection! Je vous presente Cafe Rouge, mes amis! We had the Lobster bisque, the Plateau a partager ( board of charcuterie, olives, pâté, soft goats' cheese, rocket and a selection of bread with d'Isigny butter) and the holy trinity dessert. Washed down, of course, with wine. Because of all the reasons. The lobster bisque was so dreamy. Like Colin Firth in The Bridget Jones diaries. Sweet, steamy, intense, rich, creamy as fuck, respectful and loves you for who you really are! I didn't think anything could top this, until I had a lusty love affair with the pate. I've never known pate like this, I was living in the dark 'till it came along and showed me what true pate tastes like. It had such complex, complete flavours, 5 dimensions all in one bite! His core, grounded, meaty flavour, the base that then sustains the sweetness, and then the lightness, and then the perfume! Oh, the perfume! And the texture! It was like cutting into cheesecake, creamy, airy, layered! Imagine this: a slice of baguette- crusty outside, soft inside, cut in a big, inviting chunk, drizzle that with melted butter with garlic and herbs, then top with the pate. I got dizzy at one point. For the dessert we had miniature tarte tatin, tarte au citron and fondant aux chocolats. Even though I wasn't blown away by this (not sure I even had the capacity at this point) it was all good. I honestly loved it ! It was quaint and cheap and a quick French bite. I mean really, their confit de canard was good for what it was & didn't disappoint at all. Whilst visiting my nana, I went to Cafe Rouge at least 2-3 times a week for lunch or dinner and although I'm not too fond of chains, I think they're quite good and reasonable for what you get. Cafe Rouge is located in front of St Paul's ... very close to where i live. I was at home the whole of sunday evening and so went to this "local" french restaurant for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior of the restaurant. It was brightly lit, colourful, and the walls were decorated with pictures and posters ... of the kind i associate with a cafe in Paris. This cheered me up a bit :) I ordered the 2 course fixed price menu (~£12). As a starter i asked for the chicken liver parfait. I love this dish and i think i have ordered it in every meal where i have found it on the menu. Having the soft meat on bread with french butter ... sipping some delicious white wine on the side ... i can't get enough of it :) For the main course i ordered a small medium to well done steak. The steak as well as the chips was good. They served it with dilute garlic sauce which i thought was an unusual choice. But i think the server didn't take down my order correctly. The meat i got was more medium-rare than well done. But it was fine. I enjoyed the food. One reason why i am deducting one star is that Cafe Rouge is a stickler for time. They close at 2230 on sundays and they turn away customers even if they arrive only a minute after the time. Thats the reason why it took me so long to dine here ... i have left disappointed twice and i saw others being turned away as i ate this sunday. In my opinion they should be slightly more flexible in this regard. Cafe Rouge seems to be a pretty nice place to get cheap french food (£15 for two courses and a glass of wine). I will almost certainly come back during slow weekends. But for special occasions there are many better places that i can recommend. read more

Vegan burger comes with mayonnaise and the fries may not be vegan. They have a spicy chickpea burger that says (VE) next to it. When it came, it came with a side of mayo, and mayo on both buns. When I ordered I asked if the fries were vegan and the waitress said she thought so. I immediately called her over and asked about the mayo on the burger which is not mentioned anywhere on the menu under the vegan burger. Red flags all over the place. Then they tried blaming me, saying that I should have mentioned I wanted a vegan burger when I ordered. The burger clearly says (VE) next to it. They offered to remake it, but I ended up just cancelling the order because of all the red flags. Luckily, they took it off the bill, and our waitress apologized, but I will never come back here. read more

Some of the best French food I've ever had. I know it's a chain. I know it's not even in France. But it was still so good! We came here for dinner and tried a few appetizers and the Confit de Canard, with tarte tatin for desserts. The duck was delicious, and the plum sauce was actually sweet and the perfect contrast for the savory duck. The tarte tatin just needed a little more ice cream, but it was done just right. I'd had a similar duck in plum sauce at a more expensive place in Zurich and I have to say this was much, much better. The only thing is, service took forever. I know we Americans like to eat and run instead of having a nice, relaxed, European dinner. the problem wasn't that we wanted to go at a different pace, it was that the waiters kept ignoring us no matter what we did to catch their attention - we'd make eye contact, smile, wave, and they would see us, but no one would come over to see what we wanted. The restaurant was clearly half empty, but for some reason nobody wanted to come help us out. When we mentioned it to one of the servers, he was very apologetic and took our order and made sure it came out promptly, but getting the check was a problem all over again. Not that great, coffee lunch mix location

Yes, it's a chain, but a good one (for French bistro) at that. And for London standards, fairly, if not, decently priced. Well-appointed but casual bistro atmosphere. The view of St. Paul's cathedral can't be beat! They offer a prix-fixe (is that spelled right?) menu for lunch, about £10-$12. Had the pate and bread, followed by a nice pork sausage and the meltiest-in-my-mouth mashed potatoes, with au jus. I think I licked my plates clean. With an espresso, lunch came out to ~£14. Awesome deal! Also on the lunch menu was Beef Bourgoinogne, which the French girl who ordered it at the next table said was absolutely divine. Service was prompt, friendly but not overbearing. Check out Black's outdoor goods store nearby; they sell cute Wellington-type boots for cheap (~£25)! Makes me wish they had Cafe Rouge stateside! read more

Fine food and drink, great value, great service, pleasant decor and ambience all added up to create an awesome dining experience for two Americans visiting London. Whodathunkit...Good French cuisine at Olive Garden or Chilis prices! Our waitress Fran was delightful and her menu recommendations were perfect. Anyone used to the routine rudeness of Parisians or the attitude of a typical Manhattan French restaurant maitre'd would be very pleasantly surprised by the charm and warmth of the French hostess who seated us on both our visits. By the way, this is pretty typical of French restaurants in the UK. My wife and I joke that all the most friendly and customer-service oriented people in France get deported to Britain on the Eurostar train from Paris to London. read more

My wife and I travelled to Europe (via London) in 2008 and 2012. We stumbled across this chain, and dined at three of their restaurants on our trips....ABSOLUTELY SUBLIME!. The food, drinks, and service were absolutely top shelf!. All of there food is amazing. Highly recommend this to anyone travelling through the UK.
