This very cosy cafe offers a wonderful, little selection of French edibles from imported chestnut spread to cheeses to pate. There was a large pot of made-from-scratch soup to warm the bones on offer, too. After chatting with the very amiable and knowledgeable French proprietor, I purchased a few different cured meats and a lovely, somewhat stinky cheese. Not only did I leave feeling like I'd had a good interaction, but I'd also left with incredibly tasty food stuffs of good quality. Obviously quite popular with the locals, since the lines can be quite long at lunch. Salt Beef Hash: In the States we'd call this corned beef hash on an English muffin. It was a hearty yet-not-too-huge breakfast sandwich option. Like their delicious salt beef for lunch, just chopped up and mixed with potatoes. A great way to use up leftovers. Sausage & Egg: A whole lot of sausage! The tubular kind, cut length wise and topped with a fried egg. Way better than what McDonald's is slinging. Bacon: Lots of it, but not very crispy. From an American perspective, this tasted more like salty smoky ham. Not really my thing. Salt Beef: The crown jewel! I'm pretty sure this is what we call corned beef back home. Generous chunks of this tender and savory meat, with just the right amount of pickles and sauerkraut to contrast the saltiness. Braised Beef: Basically stewed beef sliced up and put on bread. I especially like how they poured extra gravy over it. Probably the heartiest of the sandwiches I tried, which is saying something since none of them were light!

Birley here they do tamper and do your proper coffee, but my initial experience was just only slightly above average. They have also recently started up a 'Cheese Club' membership where members receive a seasonal selection of farmhouse cheeses either monthly or bi-monthly. We are massive fans of the goat's milk gouda and Villarejo manchego, as well as the bagels that Mike, the owner, picks up from the Bagel Shop on Brick Lane each morning.
