Found this place online & wanted to end my switzerland trip with some more fondue! Everything here was delicious! We got the fondue and dipped some bread and potatoes in it. I also tried their salad and the dressing was awesome. I loved the outdoor seating. The courtyard they had was very cute! It's a little far from the city center of geneva, but only about a 15 minute direct bus ride so not to bad. Service was good and all our food came out fast. Do you like cheese? Then this is your place. We made a reservation and we're glad we did because the place was packed and they were turning people away later in the evening. Since the place is known for fondue, we had to get that and it was really good. I could have just eaten that and been fine but I didn't know that ahead of time and ordered some ravioli, which was very good too. Service was fairly friendly and the food was great, so I give it two thumbs up. I will say the seating is a little tight but they're trying to give as many people as possible the opportunity to eat here so I get it. read more

We came at 11:00 am and were told they only do fondue after 11:30am. We waited around 30 minutes before being seated inside. We had the steak (25,90), fondue (25,90) and profiteroles (10,50) to finish. The steak was not my favourite. It was thin and too charred. It was also chewy. I would not recommend you order it. I did like the fries though (3/5) The fondue was a whole different situation. It was life changing. This was our first fondue in Switzerland and omg it was good. The flavour was deep. The combination of different cheese and the white wine was amazing. They offer the fondue with bread and you can get refills. It was just too good. I would definitely recommend you come for the fondue - don't leave Geneva without it. (10/5) The profiteroles were okay. Chocolate was a bit sweet. Wouldn't recommend. Merveilleux! Magnifique! And I don't even speak French! We were directed to this café by a tour guide and through online recommendations. It was one of very few eating establishments near our hotel, so given its popularity and being aware of the need to have reservations for dinner, we decided to try a mid-day lunch. There was nobody eating indoors, so we selected an outside table. The area is mostly shady and has a nice feel, but tables are rather closely spaced, and if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, you might not enjoy this. The menu has many classical Swiss dishes, and the place is best known for its outstanding fondue. We ordered this to share. A carafe of water, our wine, and a basket of not-so-fresh crusty bread (uncubed) came first. Then the fondue (in a cast iron pot), my gazpacho, and my husband's salad arrived. The waiter offered a half portion of salad, which was perfect. My gazpacho was slightly textured, had hints of garlic, onion, and peppers, and came with mini-croutons. It was perfect on that hot afternoon. But the star of our lunch was the amazing fondue, which was thick and flavorful. We did have to cut up the bread for dipping, and it certainly could have been fresher. There were lots of sparrows trying to get their share of it. All in all, this was a great afternoon meal at a reasonable cost (for Switzerland, anyhow). We'd do it again in a heartbeat! read more

We wondered why we needed one when we arrived but realized the reason as we enjoyed our food because the place filled completely with people. The fondue, salad, steak and frites were all excellent! Cafe du Soleil is one of few good fondue restaurants in Geneva. This restaurant located near many international consulate. The restaurant has mostly outdoor seating. Reservations is recommended because this place is local favorite. We got the regular fondue. They serve white Swiss cheese with bread. It is not cheap. You can dip this dish with bread. We got ribeye steak with fries. The steak was grilled correctly. The beef is good quality. The fish dish we have come with rice and some sauce on side. The fish is bake with seasoning. Overall we have good time to play with fondue. It is definitely the most interesting experience. The other dishes also good to enjoy. Love our time here. read more

Unbelievably, this was my first time having fondue. Possibly I'm one of the last people on the planet to do so. The restaurant exudes old European atmosphere. I took a chance not having a dinner reservation and walked in during a Tuesday night. While they were busy, the host was so kind and gracious to seat me without delay. The waiter was friendly, helpful and patient with this newbie. The entire staff really hustles to serve their customers. I opted for the fondue with the recommended finest cuts of beef, and was served with pearl onions and small pickles. Of course the bread and cheese were delicious as well. Whether dining solo, or as a couple or small group, an evening at Cafe du Soleil makes for a great dining experience. read more

The food here: amazing! The overall experience is what brings it down to 3 stars. The prices are affordable for Geneva! What we ordered: 5 of us split a pot of fondue to stop. We wish we would have gotten 2, but oh well. I got the butternut squash soup as my main and the flavor was great! It was so creamy and the toasties to put in the soup were so buttery and crisp. I got the cream and meringue for dessert. I had never tried this, but I apparently it's a traditional Swiss dessert. It was kind of a small portion, but I'm glad I tried it! What was weird about the experience was the server. Maybe he didn't speak perfect English, but he kept making comments that sounded like he was judging us or didn't understand maybe. When we said we only wanted one pot of fondue he said "really? Only one?". Idk, maybe I just dont Understand the humor here. Still great food and fondue overall! read more

V sour, v crunch. how to eat fondue (from a novice): rip bread with hands into small pieces. spear small bread with long fork. dip and twirl bread in fondue. remove from fondue. I decided to come here try the cheese fondue after reading all the great reviews. The place is very cozy, staff are very friendly, I was seated immediately and they brought an English menu without me asking for it which is super nice and attentive. The cheese fondue was delicious and rich. I couldn't finish it all as it's a lot for one person. Best if you go with someone or a group. If you want authentic Swiss food away from the tourist spots, this is the place to come. Really amazing cheese fondue, I dipped my bread, fries even the steak in it just to make full use of the cheese. I ordered the steak and fries, the steak is a bit tough and not what I'm use to in the states but it's seasoned and cooked well. The fries were done perfect exactly what you expect from a French/Swiss restaurant. My wife ordered grilled sea bass, another winner. I'd heard great things about Cafe du Soleil's fondue and decided to come here with a few friends for my first real fondue experience. We came early by Swiss standards for dinner (around 7 PM) so it wasn't crowded yet. Service was quick and friendly. I had the Chicken Liver Salad with Raspberry Vinegar and then shared the fondue. I am usually not a big liver eater but the flavors in the salad were superb and I enjoyed all of it. The fondue was unbelievably filling. The bread used for dipping was delicious and the fondue was good. It's flavored with a bitter red wine and starts off being cheesy deliciousness, but after a while, the cheese gets overwhelming (the pot might look small, but it is a TON of fondue). That said, I loved coming here and couldn't have picked a better spot to try fondue. read more

If you want that fondue experience we visited Cafe Du Soleil. It was still central, but just a little further out. We rang to book, - which I highly recommend. We didn't get a booking until 9:30pm on Sat night, though we weren't too bothered as we had stuffed our faces with rostis for lunch. Again the restaurant was bustling with customers, all who were sharing the fondue. You're served a huge plate of bread and prepare to feel cheesed out by the end of it. If that wasn't enough, try the Malakoff, which is pretty much deep fried cheese on toast. You only live once so why not .. although my digestion said otherwise. The waitress was extremely friendly and helpful. We also were told it was great value for money as they don't charge you per person and can just buy one to share. We went in with no reservation and luckily a kind manager said that he has one table that's available but asked us if it was okay to leave before a certain time and of course we said, "Yeaaaaes!!!". The fondue had this rich taste with what I assume it is a mix of cheddar, provolone, and swiss plus some white wine. These all together creates this semi-herbal scent in your mouth with a bit of saltiness. If you are planning to drink wine with it, I recommend white wine. It makes the flavor much more savory and neutralizes that saltiness. I also ordered the fish dish and it was not salty at all which went great with the fondue. The mixed green is a typical green you could find in the U.S. I took out one star for Soleil, and that's because I found out that I'm not a huge fan of fondue. This was my first experience having fondue, which was a bit salty for me. For some reason I believed fondue would be sweet and semi-salty. However, my friend who is a huge cheese fanatic loved loved loved it and I was glad to see that smile across his face, after those long hours of searching where to go. But I am willing to revisit when I get a chance. As a small tip, you could ask for more baguette if you want, it's free. The fondue was about 24 euros for one person portion. I shared the fondue with one another and it was enough. The manager was kind and humorous, the waiter was very friendly as well. Anyways, it was a good experience altogether. Normally you need a reservation but we arrived around 5:30 so they squeezed us in before the rush. They did want to know if we could finish by 7pm when their reservations would arrive. In the style of Yelp profile questions, my most recent discovery: I like bread, I like cheese, but I'm surprisingly not a fan of fondue. By way of disclaimer, this was my virgin fondue experience, so I am reviewing from the viewpoint of a fondue novice. I wanted my first time to be special and memorable, so the three witnesses to my foray into gourmet cheese sauce and I sought out Cafe du Soleil. We were told by multiple sources that the fondue at CdS was one of the best in Geneva, and we wanted to do this right. The building was quite rustic with a small outdoor terrace. It seemed to be a converted residential home, and we wouldn't have known that there was a second floor if we hadn't been previously tipped off. The stairway is a bit hidden, so ask to be seated upstairs--the seating there looked tidier and a bit more elegant than the no-nonsense seating downstairs. We were met with long tables set up with piles of huge slabs of bread and the classic fondue fork. The fondue came out bubbling ,and we immediately started tearing pieces of bread to dip in the gooey gruyere. My first bite was actually quite good--the warm cheese wrapped nicely around the bread with hardly any spillage after a few seconds of cooling, and the moisture of the cheese softened the hard crust of the bread just enough to get a nice mixture of soft and crispy encased in a warm blanket. Once the sensation of the first bite wore off, however, I became keenly aware of the strong taste of white wine, and that strong after-taste you get when you eat too much cheese--except it persisted from the beginning to the end of the meal. I imagine that the pungent smell and taste of cheese must be the very allure of a fondue pot, but for my uncultured taste-buds, it was a bit too heavy and a bit too much. Somehow we managed to finish the massive-looking pot of cheese, and our pot was taken away so that the hardened remains of our cheese could be cut up into pieces and returned to the table. The Koreans have our nuroongji, the Middle Easterners have their tadik, and the Swiss have their crusted cheese, I guess. I may have enjoyed the crusted cheese as a separate snack, but after an entire pot of cheese, more cheese in a hardened form just wasn't quite appealing. As one of my dinner-mates stated, "this would be better if we were restricted to one slab of bread each and the cheese pot was a much smaller appetizer." Having consumed a huge portion of fat and carbs, we then decided that now was an ideal time to supplement with sugar shock. We ordered the chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream, and Chocolate-filled profiteroles. Here came my second discovery of the evening: European desserts are absolutely wonderful. The chocolate fondant was warm and gooey in the center, and topped with the creamy vanilla ice cream, and just an overall great mix of competing temperatures and textures. The profiteroles were also very good, and the chocolate sauce decorating the plate achieved perfect viscosity to add to the flavor and texture of the pastry and the ice cream. With the fondue, desserts, and a few carafes of wine, our total came out to about CHF40 per person in a four-person group, which seemed pretty reasonable. The dessert ups my review to a clean four stars, along with the fact that the fondue itself seemed to be of very good quality, just not something that I would crave again anytime soon. When I relayed my experience to MM back home, he mentioned that he felt like fondue was a glorified version of nachos and cheese dip. Mmmmm...nachos and cheese dip....as blasphemous as it may sound, I think I'd be happy with that. read more
