We loved this place! The staff was so friendly and welcoming, it felt like we were being invited into someone's home. A mix of chill music was playing in the background, the owner was able to give great recommendations and helped us feel at home. They also have a great selection of cigars, hookah, coffees, teas, and cocktails. The atmosphere was great and we hung here for several hours lounging, listening to music, people watching, catching up, and enjoying their menu. They have a number of options for hanging out including an upper level overlooking the street, a middle room that was like a large living room, and a street level lounge. The ambiance was fantastic. We strolled in one weekend evening and were sat on the lower most level where there was live music. Fantastic music in fact that has us melting into our seats. Great hookah bar. It had middle eastern tapestry on the walls, middle eastern music playing, and comfortable seating to lounge in. Cafe Gitana was great in their service. The staff checked up on us and promptly brought out our beer and wine. We had gone to another hookah bar the night before, which despite their cheap prices, we weren't a fan. At Cafe Gitana, it costs about $14 for a shisha with two coals. That could last you a good while. We stayed for about an hour and we barely finished one coal. Visiting montreal and found this place to have great reviews so decided to try it out but unfortunately left extremely disappointed. We entered and asked a table..we were awkwardly placed beside the washroom. In the mean time another table became vacant so decided to as the server if we can move there to which she said sure. Once we moved we had also decided what we wanted to order but to get our order in was another wait...we finally hailed down our server after 10-15 kins of waving at her. Once that happened we ordered FINALLY. 30 MINUTES later nothing! We order 1 hookah and 2 drinks. Not hard at all. At the 30 minute point we noticed a group of 3 walk in and get served within 5 minutes literally. At this point it was a wait of almost 40 minutes considering they weren't that busy. Finally wit our server in no sight we decided to leave ..and then stumbled upon our server on the way out...when we said our order didn't arrvivemher response was...you moved I didn't see you.. when actually she literally came by our area atleast 10 times to clean up after tables around us and WE DIDN'T MOVE TO ANYWHERE. I came here because I was craving a hooka. It has been one of the best places I have stumbled upon in Montreal. Ok, so the Hooka is large, meaning I shared one with two other people. We enjoyed a delicious combination of Coconut and Blueberry flavored tobacco. Add to that some tea. I had the house apple turkish tea which was great. It mixed so well with the hooka. Just writing about it made me want some. Also, the ambience and the service is pretty good. Their music selection is genuine, and sometimes you get some live music. I perceived a lot of couples and friends enjoying a conversation. So if you are the romantic type and want something a bit differentl, come here. read more

As a Turkish person, obviously I'm going to be a fan. They have turkish music, turkish tea(my favorite), turkish food, and shisha! It's an experience to go here. I didn't know that they have a terrace, it's beautiful, and relaxing. The terrace is on St.Denis street, with a nice view and you could just enjoy your shisha outdoor. As for shisha I suggest melon and mint; it's a great combination in my opinion. Only melon is also nice too tho. The only thing is that I hope they start using real coal, instead of the round thing they put, coal is way better then that one but still I'd go back there for sure! read more

I came here on vacation with my partner and liked it so much I came back for my bachelor party. I now consider this a must do on any trip to Montreal. The service is good, the manager (owner?) Was very friendly and helpful when there was a problem with my cigar. The selection of cigars and whiskies is solid, and seems to change regularly. There are tons of flavors for the hookah minded individual, and the atmosphere is generally chill. 100% recommend. read more

I came here once to celebrate a friend's going away party, mainly for their cigar selection. The inside is quite dark, which lends itself to a certain kind of low-key, chill ambiance. When I first arrived, none of the staff approached me, which left me feeling a little awkward. My friends arrived shortly after and someone came to take us around the back. There was lots of comfortable seating, which is great if you're looking to spend any significant amount of time there. They have a wide selection of teas, whiskeys and cigars. My friend has a montecristo, and I ordered a Glenfiddich 12. My scotch came on a tray with ice and water on the side, which was a nice touch. This being said, the service was a little slow, and the server who helped us did not seem happy to be working there. We also ordered their Turkish Delight, which was DELIGHTFUL (ha-ha-ha). It was made really well and the flavour was there. If the occasion rises again, I would be happy to come back to Café Gitana! read more

Enjoyable night, the staff and server was really nice and friendly. A wide variety of cigars and shisha(hookah) is offered here which can be nice to pass the time or chat it up with friends. I came here for a montecristo cigar (my 1st Cuban) and it did not disappoint. Now I can see why Cuban cigars are regarded as the best in the world. Pitcher of beer is priced reasonably and wines. What took me a foot was the whiskeys, I ordered two whiskeys and coming from the states, I was expecting two tiny glasses. But what we got was trays that had the whiskey on it accompanied with ice, water and chocolate. Chocolate!!!!! We were looking for a good hookah lounge or cafe, as we do in every city that we go to. Cafe Gitana on Rue Saint-Denis hit the mark! The ambiance was fantastic - from the outdoor seating (or indoor by the windows, in the back room or second level), to the Persian carpets and lounge chairs, to the lighting and music. There look to be some other hookah lounges in the area, and we even sat down at one other - but the place was grungy and dirty, so we got up and left. The hookah itself was tasty (we had the double apple flavor) and the mint tea - made with fresh tea leaves - was the best that we've had in a while (and that says something, as I try all kinds of tea everywhere I go). Prices were reasonable, and service was decent as well. We're going back at least once more during this same trip. read more

This is one of my favorite places to visit when I go to Montreal. What first attracted me was the giant Unibroue sign on the outside, and as I'm a sucker for this-I naturally was led right in. The staff are all very friendly, and seem like they're having a good time, the atmosphere is an excellent journey away from the city outside, playing middle eastern music and leading you in to a place that just doesn't feel like you're in Montreal anymore. This hookah cafe is small, cozy and adorable. I got a fruity local beer that was delicious and went well with the shisha I ordered. I had such a great time here. Atmosphere is cool and crowd is very young and laid back. Here you can come to have a drink, smoke out a hookah or even have some after dinner desert. I ordered a pitcher of sangria which was very sweet and filled with fruit. I would definitely order this again. For shisha I had peach which when down smooth. if you are not into peach shisha don't worry they have up to 15 different kinds of shisha's. If I had more time in Montreal I would have come back again but I can guarantee next time I come to Montreal I will be visiting Cafe Gitana again!!! read more

Been going to this place since my uni days approx 12 years ago. Love the inside decor and the ambiance, truly feels like you are somewhere in the middle east firing off a sheesha. I love their outside seating as well along a very nice strip of St. Denis. Decent prices, really good sheesha and amazing decor inside. I did not have any food or cigars so cannot comment there. They have the basic beers available and some nice Quebec craft, my gf enjoyed a mojito which was relatively well done. The Good: Absolutely friendly staff that are well informed too! The shisha was not bad either. Personally my favourite was the watermelon mint, while not overpowering at all, the shisha felt clean and well maintained and did not taste anything other than what I paid for. I also love how long and roomy the couches are, they provide enough room to truly relax and enjoy the shisha. The Bad: Not sure if it was just me, but personally I felt that the food was lacking. They do not have much variety of anything to eat, mostly deserts. The Ugly: While the couches are pretty roomy they are not the most comfortable, some spots smell a bit... Let me start it of correctly. Being a 1st time visitor in this wonderful city, after researching off the hook on yelp I figured Cafe Gitana would be amazing for my friend who does not drink alcohol and only smokes an occasional cigar. We went it around 8:30pm and was confused on where we should go. We waited about 4 minutes before being acknowledged. A younger lady handed us menus and said sit wherever. We chose to go a short flight of stairs. We waited another 10 minutes before she came to take our order. I don't really do hookah unless I'm with the right group but my friend Bry was fixed on a good cigar. The young lady asked us what we wanted. I ordered basically an 8$ glass of house wine and Bry wanted a cigar. Our server disappeared for 5-8 minutes again before bringing out a cigar menu for him and promptly left after dropping my wine off too. We waited another 15 minutes wondering if we had did anything wrong. Our waitress had been everywhere but out spot. I convinced Bry that it was okay and to relax. Then an angel appeared. There was a young friendly guy who seemed to take control of the whole place. He bounced around from place to place and came over to us. He was friendly, inviting and gave awesome recommendation on cigars for Bry who eventually spent about 22$ on a cigar. He is truly the reason for the two stars as he was literally a breath of positive air. He brought the cigar, ashtray, cutter and even cut it for Bry. He eventually disappeared to spread joy to the rest of Gitana. Out of nowhere the earlier female waitress came back and said it's pay as you go, no credit or debit cards from anything but Canada and pay now. We handed her money and I asked for a dollar back so I could give it to the other guy. I was under the impression they shared tips but as someone whose been in service it's always good to hear you're doing an awesome job. The waitress who has only dealt with us about 3 minutes in total time came back demanding a larger tip and saying what it custom. I explained that the guy had spent more time with us and I also wanted to thank him for helping Bry find the perfect cigar (which he was enjoying very much). Bry was frustrated and didn't understand what he did wrong. I just wanted her to leave us alone. Don't work in service if you can't at least be cordial about it. Don't demand something you don't deserve. Bring us back the Angel. He should be promoted because he really is the only reason beside the ambience that this place get the stars at least for this experience. Thank you sir, you made our night. read more

Gitana used to be cool, but ever since last year they've changes tremendously. The only redeeming qualities of this place is the dope environment and seating, their wide assortment of cigars that can turn out cheaper than elsewhere. and their tea is decently priced in big-ish pots. Now for the bad. First off, their shisha. Its total crap now. We got 3 "different" flavors and they all turned out to taste like licorice or rubbery. Although this could've been because our waiter was new and inexperienced, but still. They also charge for extra coals but also sometimes don't, it's a weird situation. There's been times I've asked and not gotten charged and times when I have. The staff are generally very slow to take your order and always seem to be in a rush with no time to be nice unless its like 2 in the afternoon on a very quiet day. They eyeball you or give you attitude when it comes to paying and especially tipping. Their "food" is tasteless. There are much better places to eat right down the street. All in all, if you want to feel like you're in an authentic shisha bar its a good place to go, but make sure you ask for them to pack your shisha right and pray you get the nice waiters. read more

Came here on a Sunday evening. We ordered 2 different shisha pipes, one was melon and one was apple. The melon one was great, but the apple one tasted like black licorice - yuk! Atmosphere is a bit stuffy but bearable if you do shisha regularly. We also ordered some drinks including a glass of water. Everything came except for the water. I reminded the waitress twice about the water and was told "I have to bring all the orders first, then I will get you your water". It seemed kind of rude of her as we were paying customers and it was part of our drink order. So one person in our group didn't have a drink. After we asked for the bill (about 40 mins later), we received our water. Would I go back? Probably not. read more

I really wanted to love this place. It is located on St Denis, meaning that if you miss seeing beautiful people walking around during summer time while you sit outside due to the lack of their presence in other areas downtown, St-Denis is the place! We ordered shisha and drinks. The beer is pretty good, it is all local beer so we didn't recognize any of the names but no fault there. The waitress was meh with her attitude. She just wanted to go home. THEY ASK FOR YOU TO PAY AND TIP BEFORE YOU EVEN GET YOUR ORDER. So be careful with that. The worst things were the shishas. They were hard to pull. Mine was extremely rusty from inside so I could feel the taste of rust every time I inhaled. They are not well maintained and mix flavors ... so it was rust mixed with many other bad flavors .. so it did not taste remotely like anything I wanted. Turkish delights there are the best thing. You can't go wring with that at least. It is pretty expensive too. read more

Great hookah, great ambiance and great, friendly service. We stopped here for a bit wine and hookah and ended up staying for hours and hours. The staff was super friendly and the hookah choices were extensive. The prices vary but the quality is all top-notch. They stay open until 3am and we ended closing up the place.
