Old school bar, the Café Slijterij Oosterling
    Bruce K.

This is a classic bar. Not a dive bar but an old school watering hole and now a cafe with breakfast and lunch on their menu. This was our bathroom stop on the food tour and you will be surprised at how clean this restroom is when you look at the vibe of the bar itself. Built in 1735 and originally owned by the East India Company, some of the fixtures and decorations date back that far. Owned by the Oosterling family since 1877, the brothers that operate the cafe are the fourth generation owners. This place has CHARACTER! Sit inside or outside, which has a nice view of the Frederiksplein and some street traffic for entertainment. Get a Brand beer. They don't serve Heineken and you'll want to ask your bartender why. Another amazing brown cafe/bar! From the internet about Cafe Oosterling: "This bar started operating in 1877. Today brothers Oscar and Marcel Oosterling (4th generation) and Pierre serve you... When I enter Oosterling, it's like time stood still here and it feels like coming home. The interior is great. The old wooden barrels that were used way back when to ship the beer are witnesses of a time gone by. The stone floor and the low counter add to the unique setting of Oosterling. The low counter dates back to the time that the VOC (East India Company) traded spices, coffee and tea here, starting in 1735. The Amsterdamse ossenworst from Louman, combined with leverworst, cheese, some pickles and mustard go well with the beer and make me stay longer. Bitterballen and kaasstengels are ordered from a snackbar around the corner, that's why the guy with the helmet comes in every other 15 minutes!" I really couldn't have said it better. Next time I'm in Amsterdam, I'm going to make it a mission to visit every single brown cafe.

So good I stopped by twice on a 3 day trip to the city…read more I stopped by on my first visit craving a big, hearty sandwich for a late lunch and thought this might be a good find. Happy to report I was very right. I grabbed one of the many outside seats, took a look at the menu that was entirely in Dutch and waited for the wonderful waitress to quickly translate nearly every item for me. I landed on the chicken club and it hit the spot. I arrived hungry but could still only manage to finish half. Chicken was grilled perfectly into thin slices, soft boiled egg was a new touch that I loved, avocado, lettuce and probably a few other things I am forgetting. Oh, and a handful of crisps on the side. On my next visit, it was my last night in Amsterdam and I still haven't tried the infamous fries. I stopped in around 9:30 for a late night snack and a hot ginger tea. The fries were the perfect fries! Thin, crispy, salty. I loved. I also can get behind the mayo thing they do here, even though I really am a ketchup loyalist. Anyway, lunch or dinner or late night snack, this is a good spot. You'll like the foot and you'll love sitting outside people watching, reading your book, whatever.
