The area is perfect and peaceful. Jessie, the US Veteran is the best host you will ever have at a campground!! However... The elderly man in spot #40 (pics attached) has a reputation as being a rude/old man & it held true today. He comes to ur campsite to do nothing but bother u; no other reason. Not only did he inform me (after I was already talking & dealing with Jessie) that I could not park on the grass at all (see pics of his gripe), stood by for 10 minutes as if I was going to jump at his demands. Not in this life! I had to tell him to get away from my family. When I went to go pay, he told my family he would give them $130 fine for parking on the grass. Albeit they were parking on the grass and as you can see in the picture I was not. But since I was not 100% on the concrete pad he had a serious problem. I went and knocked on his door and asked him how could he write me a fine because you and I both know he has no authority to do that if the park ranger came through they would be the one to do it. I informed him that if the park ranger had a problem with the way I was parked, I would deal with him. And do not say anything else to me or my family while I was here trying to enjoy myself for one night. So instead of saying anything he decided to walk his dog on this side (I'm next to him in #40, so my little dog would bark at him and he stayed on this side irritating is versus walking his dog on the other side where nobody is. Other people in the park that is on the side he manages, came and told me he irritated them also. I highly suggest this Campground get rid of this guy. People are here to enjoy their time with their family not to be harassed by somebody who has absolutely no life and is lonely. Jesse on the other hand should be paid! I and him are military veterans. read more

Rang in the New Year in Texas woods! My first but definitely not my last time camping at Cagle. Though we only spent one night there for NYE, it was a very pleasant stay. Our area was clean and the facilities were tolerable. Sites offered water, electricity, and sewer hookups. They even offered a tent pad, lantern post, and fire ring. We hooked up a string of lights, brought our own wood to make a fire to heat up our food and also set the woodsy ambience, and I was delighted to see our tent pad was decorated with acorns from the last camper. I felt like the other tent sites were pretty close but we were able to play our music at a moderate volume without interfering with others. No wildlife when we were there and I overall felt safe and was a happy camper. Can't wait for more adventures like hiking and fishing when we return! read more

This place was a short stop for me as we came to watch the sunset and take some photos while RVing at a park nearby. There were some guys fishing out on the deck and it was as serene as it gets. They didn't catch anything that day, but I guess they're regulars and they usually do. It's worth stopping by to fish, think or just take a break. Enjoy! read more

We were considering putting our RV here long term and decided not to because of the camp park hosts. They are not nice and not friendly. It's such a shame. I would not expect people to be like that in this area. read more

This was the first time we had visited the Cagle Recreation Area and it won't be the last. We were very impressed with the facilities. We liked the sites since they were full-hookups (water, sewer, and electricity). There is a fire ring and picnic table at each site. The sites were also somewhat level. We didn't have to do much leveling at all. The camphosts were very helpful and even brought firewood over to us. If you need groceries, there are two grocery stores in New Weverly. The area is in the middle of the Sam Houston National Forest, beautiful. We didn't make it down to the lake. We'll have to RV at Cagle again in the near future. read more

Warning: by camping here you may be disturbing the camp hosts. This is a good spot for a day trip but I don't recommend camping! We went camping in the second loop this weekend (I had friends in the first loop and they liked that host). The loop is small and there are 2 couples as camp hosts in the area (four people) within 4 campsites of each other. At night, my family would hang out at the campsite of our friends (across from our site). I would sit at my camp alone and read or listen to podcasts (I am an introvert and that is my relaxation). All I could hear for hours at a time were the two female camp hosts gossiping loudly about the campers in their area. They even complained about me on my phone instead of "enjoying wilderness". I was within earshot of all of this and just ignored them. I could hear them and not my family at the other campsite, that is how loud the hosts were! They complained about children on bikes, and even kids walking around the loop. It was disturbing to be around that much hate and prejudice! At 7:30 PM, we allowed our kids to walk around the loop together and talk (we don't like them on bikes at night)...again, the loop was incredibly small and it was still early. One of the children with us is intellectually challenged and started looking for his cousin "Jessie". This enraged one of the hosts. She yelled at him. He ran away. She then proceeded to talk badly about him loudly with the other host! After that, she started yelling at all the other children who were walking and talking quietly. They told all the kids they had to be in their own campground immediately. There were more than 10 families in our group! It was still before 8:00 at this point (quiet time is 10:00). The camp hosts were being much louder than the children. Again, I could hear them gossiping and "venting" about all of this!. Eventually, we spoke with the hosts and one of them yelled that he paid "$90,000 for this job" and our pay and use for the campground was "insignificant". The trip ended up being more and more drama and I could not wait to get out of there at the end of the weekend. We camp at least once a year with a group and I will never be back here again. The campground itself was another disappointment. The trails were overrun with weeds. It looked like they may have been nice a few years ago but have not been maintained in some time. There is no fishing allowed near the doc but there were dead catfish all over the place. The water did not look safe (maybe why fishing was not allowed?). We wanted to go camping to decompress, especially with how difficult 2020 has been. Instead, we had to deal with hate-filled bitterness and spite, all because the camp hosts had to share their site with some campers? This was an incredibly disappointing and frustrating experience that I sincerely hope no one else ever has to go through. read more

This place is a real hidden gem. It's a government ran park, but it's well Leo and super clean. You have to book through recreation.gov. So the sites here are huge! I have a 38" rig and the spaces are large enough for me to keep my truck at the front. They are all back in's but all offer plenty of back in space to swing around in. Sadly, they didn't have power when we pulled in on Friday. Tragic because without power there's no water. So not a lot to do. We had to pack it into town for food. Mild inconvenience. The next bad thing. They allow boy scouts to camp in the rv spaces. While there will always be a special place for bsa in my heart, they all wake up abnormally early and make a tremendous amount of noise. I camp now a days to relax and sleep in. Not be woken up by a bunch of unsupervised boys running around campsites. If you don't have a dedicated camping area then don't allow 50 tents to disrupt the quiet of a campground. /end rant Okay past my rant this place is gorgeous. We came here when everything opened back up. I'm a tent camper and I loved that they had water and electric. I didn't like the fact that the lakeside was closed which wasn't their fault. But I hear it's awesome on the lake side. I can't swim and apparently it's deep. I'm looking very forward to trying the lakeside out and I will repost with pics. The loss of one star was because the guy on bike who came around for checking that you paid was a little condescending like what didn't you put it on the pole so I didn't have to ask? That's the vibe I got, We didn't know to put the ticket on the wood pole thing. He wasn't rude but it was a little bit annoying how he handled us not having it on posted but once we showed him, he was cool. I think maybe people have tried to get over in the past but we don't operate like that. It was very much confusing on how to pay. We doubled back twice and finally asked someone. Nonetheless it was clean and I can't wait to go back. I love camping and I will be sure to increase the rating if we have a better experience. Covid is not their fault nor is people who try to sneak in and not pay. I will say that once we showed proof of payment he was cool and helpful. read more

Cagle Recreation Area - Camping! - Recreation Centers Near Me - New Waverly, Texas

Cagle Recreation Area is a really nice place to camp. My husband, dog and I have stayed here several times in the couple of years. There are two camping loops with about 40 total sites. All sites have electric, water, sewer, a flat tent area, fire pit and picnic table. There are three restroom facilities with showers and several camp hosts. Some of the sites are waterfront views of Lake Conroe. It's very relaxing to watch the sun set on the lake while cooking dinner on an open fire. The recreational area includes a boat dock for the campers and day guests. There are three loop trails: a half mile walk near the boat dock that gives you direct access to the lake and a 1 mile loop that will lead you around the campground or continue on this trail for a longer walk into the Texas wilderness. The extended hiking trail was more overgrown than I would have like it to be, last time we visited. This location is very close to the Sam Houston National Parks, which has several other hiking trails. The weekdays tend to be quieter than the weekends. read more

I hesitate to post this because I don't want more people here at this Beautiful campsite. The sites are pretty level and spacious. The lake has several paths to it that you are free to enjoy if you do desire. The hosts are incredibly helpful and friendly and The campground is inviting to tent campers as well as RV. read more

Full disclosure, I'm not a camper so I pretty much have nothing to compare this to. But by being someone who doesn't really like to camp, maybe the fact that I loved this place says something?? Each camp site can hold 2 tents, up to 8 people total and has electricity so if your high maintenance like me, you can easily blow up your air mattress in your tent. Just bring an extension cord. There is also a fire pit at each site. Bathrooms were in decent condition and well stocked. But what I really loved was the beautiful paths you can walk or bike on. The lake is absolutely beautiful and you can boat or kayak. This was such a beautiful and peaceful place and I would definitely go back. read more

Stayed Easter Weekend, park was full. We shared our site with friends that used the tent pad. Lots of trees. Site has a paved full hookup, somewhat level, RV site with picnic table, fire pit, & grill provided. Host even brought us wood (pine only), so we did have to leave to buy firewood outside of park. Clean showers & restrooms. Clear, well marked 2.2 mile hiking path. Only thing that would make this park better is a fishing pier for us non-boaters. Seems to have excellence fishing. The guy across from us got a HUGE catfish. Sites are spacious & well shaded. We will definitely be back!! read more

We camped at site 9 in our travel trailer for 2 nights. Pros: Pad was in good condition and level, site was shaded. Restrooms were old but sanitary. Cons: - The grill grate over the campfire had a huge hole in it.. So we couldn't grill. However, when we asked our park host for a new one, he gave us his... I'm happy we were accommodated when we asked, but I expect the campground to be ready when we arrive. - We had a huge ant problem at our site. My husband got bit up like crazy. They were everywhere. - Our dogs got a face-full of ticks WITHIN the campground (ie, not on a trail). I'm really upset about this. There were literally so many ticks covering my dogs, my husband couldn't pick them all off. He was able to wash most of them off with the hose (the ones that hadn't latched yet) and pick off the rest by hand. Our five month old puppy got bit by two of those ticks. I grew up with a dog who contracted Lyme disease from a tick bite and if our puppy gets Lyme disease from this campground, I am going to be beyond pissed. - There isn't much to do within the park. You have to leave the park to get to most of the trails in the area. Definitely WILL NOT be coming back here. I expect a park to put my health and my dogs' health first. Ticks within the campground is ridiculous- and not just a few ticks, but a whole nest! Both humans and dogs can get very sick from a tick bite. read more
