If you speak Spanish, you can start your visit by watching the 50-minute documentary. The film is from 1993 and feels long, but it is helpful to gain background on what they've found during the various excavations and research. I especially enjoyed hearing more information on the different petroglyphs we'd soon see. After that, check out the small museum, which features air conditioning as well as bilingual signage, to see some of the artifacts they've uncovered as well as learn some background. And finally, you can walk right where the Taínos once participated in games and ceremonies among the 10 stone-lined plazas and 21 petroglyphs. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and you can get up close to the stones (just don't touch them!). You'll also see the mountain that the Taínos viewed as sacred because it looks like a cemí. When we went, we pretty much had the place to ourselves, and it was a peaceful and fascinating experience for the approximately 1.5 hours we spent at the park. For example, a specific white Hard Rock Cafe shirt features the Parque de Bombas design on the back. I was quite surprised to learn that it was built in 1882 as a pavilion for an exhibition and later became Puerto Rico's first-ever fire station. For once, it looks nothing like a traditional fire station, and it didn't look that aged, so i suspect the city of Ponce ensures it is well maintained. It is free, but there is a donation pot just after the entrance. So, it doesnt hurt to give a few dollars to such a fine exhibit of firefighting history. On a side note, I parallel-parked on the street for free, as did a few locals. It was around the corner from Jalapeno's restaurant on a one-way street.

It's adjacent to a beautiful church, waterfalls, and all sorts of other scenic areas. There is a parking lot located diagonally across the street from it where you can leave your vehicle. It only cost a few dollars to park. Enjoy!!

The tunnel is one of the most significant work of the remnants of the national railway system that connected the island during the first half of the twentieth century

Great visit to Castillo San Felipe del Morro on a Sunday morning…read more Arrived when they opened up at 9am and there was no wait to get in. Spectacular views of the castle itself as well the surrounding areas. Lots of history about the castle displayed through some great exhibits. Lots of walking, hills and some stairs throughout...so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Great gift shop. Friendly and helpful staff throughout. Admission fee is $10, but grants access to Castillo San Felipe del Morro as well as the nearby Castillo San Cristobal up until the following day...so be sure to take advantage and visit both within that period. There is a reasonably-priced nearby parking garage (Ballaja Parking Garage) just a short walk to the entrance. There is also free street parking along Bulevar del Valle in the early morning hours.

Checking out El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro) in San Juan, PR was 1 of those experiences…read morethat really stays w/ you long after you leave. This historic Spanish fort was built in the 1500s & played a major role in defending San Juan from sea attacks during the colonial era. Walking through it, you can really feel the weight of that history. The thick stone walls, open courtyards, tunnels, and lookout points all reflect how strategic & intense life had to be back then, especially w/ the constant threat of war & invasion. What really hit me most emotionally was just being there & taking it all in. Standing on the grounds overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it was easy to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago(soldiers watching the horizon, waiting for ships to appear). There's something powerful about physically being in a place that played such a major role in PR's history. It was honestly a really memorable moment for me. Not just b/c of what I learned, but b/c of how it felt being surrounded by so much history in 1 place. It gave me a deeper appreciation for San Juan & the stories built into the island itself.

It is on the border with…read moreCiales and Orocovis, although if you are visiting Jayuya or Villalba, it is not that far of a detour. The road is pretty narrow, as they all are in the mountains. However, there are several spots where you can leave your car on the side of the road and walk tot the bridge where the waterfall is. There is also a business nearby that sells souvenirs and food. The waterfall (or chorro) makes for great pictures. You can also climb down and get in the water. Unfortunately, our kid was acting up (tired and cranky) so we couldn't get in. Next time. I would recommend stopping here, even if it is just for some pictures.
