We have a 4 year old & 1.5 year old, both beach bums. I researched which Cape beach to go to for hours. Mayflower Beach seemed great but I read there was a lot of seaweed. Coast Guard Beach seemed great also except for the fact that we would have to park and then take a shuttle to the shore. We decided on this beach, which seems to have the same feel as Coast Guard. We got there at about 945am on a Tuesday morning in August. There were only a handful of parking spots left at The Beachcomber. Parking was $30 but we got a voucher to use toward food or souvenirs from The Beachcomber (the food and mixed drinks there were very good). The beach is accessible by a pathway on a sand dune that is tall and steep. Going down was easy. Going back up required a few rest stops for me. I'm pregnant and I was carrying our 1.5 year old. It probably would've been easier for me had I not been pregnant but this is definitely not a trek for anyone with physical limitations. My 4 year old went up and down twice but her legs were really burning the 2nd time going up. This is one of the best beaches I've ever been to. Sapphire water and soft sand. Quiet crowd and limited cell service, which added to the relaxation. The shore is a little rocky but doable without water shoes. Once you walk into the water a few feet from the shore the rocks give way to soft sand. The water was cold. I almost felt like I was taking an ice bath. But it felt great once I got acclimated and really helped me cool down in the 85 degree weather. It was a really special experience and so picturesque. One important note: there is a danger of sharks because of the booming seal population. We saw seals in the early afternoon swimming playfully about 20 feet from shore. Some locals will not get in the water if they spot seals-- that means sharks could be nearby. There were lifeguards on duty and also a shark patrol boat along the coast but it's still a little scary! The current got very strong in the early afternoon. I'm used to the crashing waves at the Atlantic beaches in NY and this undertow concerned even me. read more

Great beach, great views, ample paid parking. This beach is not for people with mobility issues, steep walk to get to the beach. The beach is nice and flat, lots of space and sand. We saw several seals in the water. There was one shark warning, everyone out of the water for 10 minutes. $30 to park and they give you a voucher for $30 worth of food or merchandise inside the restaurant. read more

The Cape Cod National Seashore is absolutely stunning. I love the majestic dunes that keep you from seeing civilization when you are down on the beach at Cahoon Hollow. This beach is such a peaceful spot and very relaxing. I grew up and spent most of my life on the east coast, but since moving to California, I have visited many of the notable beaches between San Diego and San Francisco. With that said, Cahoon Hollow is still one of my favorite beaches in the United States. I have generally visited Cahoon Hollow in May-June or September-October when parking is usually free and the beaches are not very crowded. I recommend trying to visit at those times. This is another GREAT beach for sitting on and spending the day OR for taking a nice long stroll. You could walk for miles. I recommend packing a lunch, snacks and beverages. There are 2 negatives to this beach: 1. Parking is pricey in the summer. 2. It's a VERY steep walk to get down to the beach. **Lecount Hollow is another equally stunning beach that is located right next to Cahoon Hollow.** read more

Hi- Here's my experience at Cahoon Hollow Beach. The beach and restaurant are amazing. Amateur tip: Do not under any circumstance go down the face of the sand walkway that leads from the restaurant to the beach. The lifeguards will castigate and embarrass you for doing such an act while the entire beach looks on. I guess it's their axe to grind. I felt like I hurt a puppy with a baby seal while yelling Tom Brady obscenities. Clearly, it's a readily apparent crime because it appeared we followed a herd of buffalo down the sand. Maybe they should have a sign or something - other than Stay Off The Dunes, which you are on the dunes the entire walk down to the beach. Clear as mud. Cahoon Hollow is a beautiful beach with a fantastic view of the dunes and ocean. We saw lots of seals swimming close to shore and while there were no shark warnings, we avoided going in past our knees. The walk down from the parking lot is steep and more importantly, the walk up is challenging, so plan accordingly. This beach is not a great option for anyone lugging lots of gear or with mobility challenges. For everyone else, it is a dream. read more

We LOVED Cahoon Hollow Beach! We are from the South & these beaches reminded us most of the Florida coastline with their sandy beaches & gorgeous water. Seals swam up & down the coast making our time even more special. The atmosphere was relaxing & the trek up the sand dune wasn't too bad at all. This beach is almost perfect, with thick, "grounded" sand that doesn't blow in your face with the ferocity of spoon-fed pulverized glass from an episode of Oz, and a steady stream of "oohhh a seal!" gasps emanating from the crowd of neighbors. The polished, rocky shoreline and gradient slope give skim boarders a little extra difficulty, and the lack of seagulls is sure to depress Cheeto-waving toddlers who will, at some point in life, realize that a flock of seagulls gunning for a neon corn nugget is infinitely more terrifying than their associated 80s band/haircut, thereby making their temporary sulking totally worthwhile. I love the stoic, looming nature of the dunes - a natural wind barrier and totally bitchin' sight to behold. Especially for sun-drained tourists who neglect their level of athleticism and try to sprint, arms loaded with chairs, gritty towels and a rainbow parasol, up the 60degree incline and to an early heart attack. It's a marathon of ascension, folks. Soak it up. The parking is, well, the Cape and as of last week sits at $15/car. Take this tip: get an 8 hour rental bicycle from Idle Times and leave your car in their lot. Sure it's $18, but now you've also got scenic transport to the beach and another 4-5 hours for cruising Rte 6, Main Street or, hell, take it to P-Town. It's your vacation. Warning: Whoever said the sand flies haven't hit Cahoon Hollow must have vinegar for blood. My legs got destroyed. read more

This place has beautiful views and not crowded. And that's about it for the positives. The walk up and down the dunes was treacherous. I slipped and lost footing going down. I repeatedly saw lifeguards bring water and ice packs to people making the trip back up. This beach is not for anyone with any type of physical ailment or disability. The shore is VERY rocky. Must wear water sandals. There are also a ton of black flys that bite (and they hurt)! So my point of view as an tourist, this is a place for locals. Beware of the dunes, rocks, and flys! read more

Great beach, but very steep climb down and up to get to it! Parking was a mile away $20 but if we got there early enough to park at the beachcomber it would have been $15 with a voucher for food. The walk up back up the cliff from the beach was tough but not awful and burns those extra calories you take in at the beachcomber. The beach is really clean and pretty and the ocean water was the perfect temperature (around mid 60's) to cool off but not freeze yourself. read more

Ohh you have to love the National Seashore with one of its most spectacular beaches, plus a sweet restaurant on the premises including a renowned raw bar. You'll see seals and on a few occasions even whales in the distance spouting about. Yes, get there early folks, there is a line regardless but once the lot is full fret not, you'll be sent to another location and bussed in on the Funk Bus. It's certainly a lively and fun crowd on the beach! However less not forget, the dunes are not for the elderly, handicapped, nor the faint at heart, especially when lugging beach gear, but Lord have mercy what a work out! As for bugs, honestly I've never experience them, but maybe it's because my feet are horizontal on my (tri-fold) lounge chair and not positioned in the sand, yes it may make a difference.... This is probably my favorite beach on the Cape. Big enough that you're not on top of people- especially if you're willing to walk down a bit from the path to the beach. Very clean, and absolutely beautiful with huge dunes surrounding you. It costs $15 to park without a permit, but I hear that you can apply that $15 to your bill at the Beachcomber if you decide to eat or better yet drink there. The parking lot does fill up, so either go in the AM, or wait until the early birds pack up for the day. No showers, etc., but there are some portable toilets up in the parking lot. You need to walk down a giant sand dune to get to the beach, so pack light if you can or you'll be huffing and puffing on the way back up! read more

get there early and happily pay the $10 or so it costs you to park in the small lot; gather your stuff and stroll out to an incredibly striking vista as you find yourself on top of a 75 - 100 foot tall sand dune, looking down towards an expansive, pristine beach and the ocean. if the parking is full, keep going down the street as there is a second lot. this is a pretty local beach and, despite publicizing it, i hope it stays that way. there is one . . . small . . . sign on route 6 pointing to the beach. you can, and will, miss it if you are not careful. you will think you have overshot it while driving through the woods. just keep going. the road ends at the ocean. the good news is, because it's out of the way and not publicized, it's not crowded. can't say much about the beachcomber. looked like a pretty typical beach bar/restaurant, but i byob so i didn't have occasion to go in there. it was nice to have the option, though. *a-team music playing in the background* if you're looking for a good beach on the cape . . . and if you can find it . . . maybe you can enjoy . . . cahoon hollow. read more

Nice beach. Pros: Beautiful beach that is fun for swimming because this beach is ocean side so you get to enjoy the waves. We saw some seals in the water, which was cool (but also a little concerning because there is a sign saying this place is a feeding ground for sharks!). Cons: Very crowded beach that is super buggy (tip: bring bug spray or be eaten alive!!!!). We arrived at 9:30AM and the line for parking was already insane. It's $20 to park, but you get a $20 voucher for the Beachcomber so that makes up for it. Also, there is a very large dune you must get down to get to the beach. Easy going down, quite a workout going up (especially with all the beach gear). This beach is not handicap accessible and I would not recommend to elderly people or those with motor problems. Maybe not the best beach if you have very young children. read more

This beach is a family favorite. With brisk ocean temperatures, we love to wade up onto the sandbar where water is shallower and much warmer. Campfires are allowed with a permit and can be obtained at the Harbor. read more

Cahoon Hollow Beach is one of the best beaches you will find on the Cape! Not to mention, the Beachcomber is right there too. Dive bar that has been around forever that features great bands throughout the in-season. One of the reviews said it was "byob"......that it is NOT! It's a bar/restaurant! They serve some of the greatest drinks, have great fried seafood, great outdoor bar and there are t-shirts/sweatshirts to purchase. There is a walk-up take-out window that serves food/soda/water as well. One of the best gems on the Cape!! read more
