The color, details, license plate, the wheels, the cake was amazing. We had the cake displayed on a high table and it was truly a beautiful piece of art. I cannot say enough good things about Cakes by Carlos. The artistry of the cakes is fantastic. I had them design a cake to look like my daughter's graduation cap from college but updated for her doctorate and it was amazing. They couldn't of gotten any better down to the individual strands for the tassel! The cake itself was moist and delicious. I was hoping there would be some left over, but not with that good a cake! The customer service is excellent. Agnes is a very warm and welcoming person who was extremely helpful and very easy to work with. Hats off again to Agnes and the bakers at Cakes by Carlos....my nieces Wedding Shower Cake was a huge hit!!! The Groom & Bride to Be went crazy over it!! Their theme was Lord of The Rings.....not only did it look fabulous...the flavors were delicious!! The top cake of vanilla cake and chocolate mousse melted in your mouth and was gone in a matter of minutes and the bottom cake of Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting was to die for!! I ordered my daughters 1st birthday cake here and small smash cake and not only did they pull together all my Pinterest and their designs and combined them beautifully...the cake was delicious!!! Super lovely lady I spoke to let me know how the quoting process went. It's a little pricey but I understand all the work it takes to mold the shapes and the taste didn't suffer one bit. Got a Red Velvet cake. They usually make a batch for the week to keep in their fridge display, but I reserved one for my sister's birthday just in case it would sell out. She loves this cake! I got it personalized with a birthday message. My sister was very happy and so were her guests. I have also purchased the mango mousse cake and chocolatina cakes and I think they are delectable. Have had custom cakes made in the past too on multiple occasions. You must give 2-3 weeks notice to get something customized but Agnes will work with you and they deliver a lovely product with delicious cake, filling and decoration. But this weekend........they far outdid themselves. We had a Paris themed 1st birthday party and the cake was absolutely stunning!!! The guests are still talking about it a week later! I keep looking at the photos of the cake and the exquisite details. We had the chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling - delishhhhhhhh. Amazing bakery!! I was put in charge of dessert for a work party so found Cakes by Carlos thanks to yelp--picked it since it was close to work, but I'd drive across the city for this place now that I've tried the cakes! Lady was so sweet too -- I called in advance knowing I work late and they held the place open for me an extra half hour (to 6:30). I bought about 10 pieces of their individual slices/pieces -- all of different kinds (see my pic!). Most were about $3.25 per piece...given the quality and detail, definitely worth every penny. Tried about a third of what I bought and my favorite would have to be the "chocolate bomb.". Mousse was light in weight but rich in flavor and the cake bottom was the moist-est I've ever had. She gave me free bag if "ribbons" cookies for buying more than 4 pieces. As long as I'm working in chi-town, will be back!! read more

Murray is not the most famous muppet from the show, so I provided a picture, and the cake came back looking just like him - it was definitely a hit. Got the double chocolate and was told the size I ordered would feed 10-12. Would easily have fed 15 adults, as long as everyone eats a modest serving size. The employee was very helpful, friendly, and warm, and she offered a complimentary cookie. The desserts were beautiful to look at. However, tastewise, I was disappointed. I tried four items - the chocolate bomb, napoleon, double chocolate cake slice, and decorated heart cookie. The total came to $13something. The mousse used in the bomb and cake slice was too heavy for me that it felt oily and greasy. The napoleon was boring after a few bites. Let us eat cake will be my new mantra and I will buy it all at Cakes by Carlos! What a delectable, sugar sweet but oh so light delight. We were lunching in Lombard and in the true tradition of Adventure Fridays we had to find a bakery. I was looking for a cupcake place when Yelp came up with this delicious suggestion. All 5's, I marveled and bookmarked it post haste. The shop is very quirky and textured, literally. It's like a colorful trip down the rabbit hole and the variety was not overwhelming. The woman who worked there was super friendly, helpful and patient. My husband and I both chose two slices of cakes to go and last night we each ate one. I savored the Double Chocolate cake and nearly wept with joy and gratitude. The cake was light and moist and the filling so light and although it looked like it could be overpowering, it was the completely opposite - a perfect complement to a perfect slice of cake. I'm very disappointed. I called yesterday to place an order for a little girl's birthday cake for Saturday. Oh, wait. Let me start from the beginning. I called during the memorial day weekend, and left my name and number at the prompt of a voice message. Nobody called me back. A day goes by, and still no call. I called yesterday and a lady called Agnesa (that's what it sounded like). She barely spoke good English. She didn't have much knowledge about frostings and fillings. I have never had anybody recommend a mousse filling with a butter-cream frosting for a three layered cake. Anyway, I ignored that and proceeded to finish my order. She kept cutting me off to suggest different ideas I could do for the cake, which was totally unnecessary and it was quite clear she was trying to up-sell me to something I didn't want. They don't even do 9" cakes. Just the 8" and 10" ones. I didn't want either, but had to go with the bigger one to be on the safe side. I was shocked when she said I can let the cake with mousse filling sit outside for more than 3 hours. NO cake with a mousse filling would stay good OUTSIDE of the refrigerator for more than an hour! One more thing that annoyed me was that I've always paid for the cake during pick up. She DEMANDED me to pay half or full for the cake before I picked it up. I was like, uh okay? I didn't have my credit card handy so I told her I'll call later. Then she said when would I like to pick it up? I said around 3. She snaps, "Sorry mam, you'll have to come early. I have a wedding to go to and I can't be late. I'm already pushing it. The store will be closed then I won't be able to help you." Wow, you could have just said make it earlier than 3. No need to go off on your busy schedule that I'm not interested to know about. At the end of the order, she was so rude and was literally being hasty that I finally took it away from her. I didn't place an order there. I thought this place has great reviews, but HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Poor communication, and not much variety to offer. We tried 3 or so different cupcakes. All were good. Yesterday I bought a mango mousse cake slice. It was so light and delicious. 5 stars for this cake slice. I also bought a 'strawberry shortcake' slice. This was a 4 (or so layer) cake slice with different fillings between each layer. Wonderful. I decided to pass on the eclair but my goodness, those eclairs were at least 10" long. Service was very friendly. I will be back for more goodies. read more

Okay, EVERY review is 5 stars? C'mon! Me-thinks there's something fishy going on. NO one gets ALL 5 star reviews. I live right near this place and pass it often so I went in to check it out. It is admittedly a cute little bakery, the staff is friendly and the treats look yummy. I can't speak to ANYTHING else but the cupcakes I purchased. First, they were really pricey but they did look good. I'm no foodie but I do like my sweets - well, sweet. The cupcakes were rather bland. Maybe they're supposed to be. I'll admit with a 3 year old in the house we like things sweet - (yes, we like Jewel cupcakes) - but again, these were expensive and not so tasty (to US). I 'may' try the place again for other things - the cookies looked good but you can get cookies with sprinkles anywhere. I would hesitate to purchase something like a cake without getting some kind of sample first - if the cupcakes were more than a dollar ($1.50?) apiece i can only imagine the price of a cake and if that cake were as un-yummy as the cupcakes I would be very unhappy! read more

What to add.... I have had a single experience with the shop, needing a last minute birthday cake for an out of town visitor with refined foodie tastes. I am usually doubtful of 5-star rated places but I gave the bakery a shot because I am new to DuPage and don't know the cake shop scene. So yes, the double chocolate cake is as good as they come. And yes, I was lucky that they stayed late at the shop so I could drop in after work to place the order for pickup the next day. This review is for a wedding cake only. I have never been to the store or tried any of the other baked goods. As a last minute decision (my mother insisted and offered to pay) for our very small wedding right before 4th of July this year (less than 50 people) we decided to do a traditional wedding cake instead of other types of dessert. I chose a design I thought was beautiful off of the website samples, and all of them are gorgeous. We chose a simple two tiered cake with a little piping and some calla lily flowers in our wedding color, green. I will try to remember to post pictures when I get them. The cake was fabulous! It looked really great and it tasted just as good as it looked. It was vanilla with a raspberry mousse filling. I thought I had ordered plain vanilla but my mother remembers me ordering the mousse. We had a buffet style dinner but I only picked at one plate and some fruit because I wasn't very hungry and was busy attending guests. But I certainly made time to eat TWO slices of this cake! It was light and spongy with the perfect raspberry tang. The icing was not too sweet. The process for ordering could not have been simpler. Agnes worked with both me and my mother and as I was out of state all interactions were over the phone and email. She was very sweet and easy to work with. I was not privy to the price but my mother didn't faint or anything so I can only assume the damage wasn't too bad and I'm sure after eating it she'd be happy to pay again. read more

Ok I don't go crazy over baked goods. But this place has hit a total temptation cord with me. Most of the cakes and pastries taste and look a bit un-American. Very European or French- I really don't know. But fabulous! The selections to choose from are not overly large, however you are almost guaranteed to find something you love and then begin craving the next day. Try the Nepoleons, they are really good. This is a very late review! In May, my boyfriend was graduating from Universal Technical Institute and he worked very hard to graduate. I was planning to throw a nice party, but mainly I wanted to get him a cake to remember. I contacted a few other bakery's prior to finding Cakes By Carlos. Other bakery's were very limited on time, way over priced, seemed to rushed to talk, and couldn't do what I wanted done. Long story short, after emailing with Agnes and sending her pictures of what I wanted done, I got what I wanted. I went in to pay for the cake prior to the party, and she had the pictures I emailed her out and made sure she got everything I wanted down. The day finally came, I drove from Oak Lawn to get this cake and it was a cake to remember. I am so satisfied with this bakery and all they've done to make sure this cake was perfect. I will be going in next year for my parents 50th birthdays, and I have no doubt that their cakes will be exactly what I want.
