Great school for education, but for a social life....humm look somewhere esle, anywhere. Like other reviews before me, you can get a job offers right after graduation or during your time at school. I'm an civil engineering graduate of 2008 and this school prepared me for life and landed me a job. I didn't want to be a regular commuter and see my college years gone down the toilet, so I tried to participate as much as possible. I joined numerous clubs, honor societies, dorm (suites and the ugly brick freshmen building), study abroad in china, and joined a fraternity. Overall it gave me ALOT of memories. read more

Cal Poly Pomona is the only CSU to get a science degree in Southern California. It is an extremely hands on school that focus' on practice not theory. Campus life is pretty good for being such a small campus. Being apart of a fraternity will definitely amplify your interaction with the school, students and community so i suggest you check out Greek Life. It may not be a party school but you 20k 18-24 year olds in the same area and parties will occur, lots of them. There is always a party you just have to know the right people and look hard enough. The 4 stars is because it can be quite difficult to get classes. I have almost achieved a minor in philosophy just by taking classes when i can't get core classes. read more

Before you decide to attend CPP, you should be know that the administration is moderately incompetent and could never function in the private sector. If you need any sort of support or help with campus issues, don't hold your breath as the administrators treat you like you are an inmate at their jail. They also go on vacation but fail to use out of the office messages on email or voice mail. Not very helpful and they seem to miss the point that they provide a service, and their salaries and benefits are paid by tax payers and parents. As educational budgets continue to increase y/y, parents need to force university administrators and the politicians who fund them with our taxes, to function more like businesses which provide services to their customers (students). Here are some two real situations: My son had several problems in his first year at CPP, and instead of trying to help and support their paying students, they hold up a rule book to justify their random decisions or they blame their outdated computer system. They post arbitrary rules to a disfunctional website that students are what -- supposed to read and memorize? A tuition check sat on someone's desk during the Christmas holidays. Then my son's classes without notice or an email were dropped. When I tried to find someone to help with this, the entire campus was on holiday leave with no phone backup. When my son arrived for the winter quarter his classes were no longer available so he was forced to take non-major classes which do not support his degree, therefore increasing the cost of his degree Despite recent court rulings on pre-paid cards in the private sector, you will be forced to lose all pre-paid meal points by the Housing Department at the end of the academic year, even if you are returning Fall quarter! So the university benefits from getting cashflow up front and then benefits by collecting (tantamount to stealing) balances from their students at the end of the academic year. How is this providing a service to students who are at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to budgets and power to change policy at the university level? read more

Yelp needs to give the option of 0 starts. I got a parking ticket when I had a parking pass then went to talk to parking services to have it dismissed. Well apparently it was past due (by 2 days) yet I had just gotten the notice last week, not giving me enough time to challenge it. When I talked to some rude wanna-be police man at the parking services building he told me that everything I said checked out but I still had to pay the ticket (and now with a late fee coming out to 119 which is the price of a parking pass for a quarter at this school) because it was past due and there was nothing they could do about it. I naturally asked to talk to someone else if he couldn't do anything to fix this wrong doing! Well some rude woman came with a snobbish attitude looked at my notice and then said "yea it's past due there's nothing we can do" I explained how I had JUST received the damn notice and she said well you had the ticket... I DIDNT!!! It was never on my car!! I just got the stupid notice!! She didn't care of course and then the wanna-be police guy said if I didn't leave he would have to send me to discipline or some bs like that. So I left, but not before telling them that I knew there was something they could do they just didn't give a F! I did my research and found that you CAN appeal the citation even AFTeR its due (gasp!) called them up and they of course tried to bs again but I stood my ground and long story short won the battle. So Cal Poly Pomona use to be really great. Ive gone through the most horrific process trying to get into this school. I have lost all respect for Cal Poly Pomona. They are using the budget crisis as an excuse to mishandled the application process. They refused to inform applicants of their admissions status for fall well into May. The admissions office was extremely rude to me. They refused to help me AT ALL. When I would ask them why they wouldn't be honest and tell me what was going on with my application, they hung up. They are considering cutting out their fine arts program. Theres a 13 unit cap on registration and many classes are being closed. Dont go here. its not worth the trouble read more

I went to this school and got a BSBA CIS and BSBA TOM degree in supply chain in 2012. I did not learn anything. Most of the Business teachers were useless and do not care about teaching. I did not try, yet I still managed to get a 3.7 GPA because most of the classes are curved quite a bit. It was normal to see teachers given students B's when they got 67%. Most of these students got mad at me because I damaged the curve. That's the first thing they ask at the beginning of the quarter. I should have failed. I slept in class and never studied, yet I managed to get a 3.7. That says a lot about the quality of teaching at this school. read more

Let me start off by saying Cal Poly Pomona is the diamond in the rough in almost all aspects. The area around Cal Poly is less than to be desired. The city of Pomona is probably the worst atmosphere for any college student. Cal Poly is right next to 2 or possibly 4 freeways, depending on how you count. You can hear the 10 freeway from almost any part of campus, but the campus is pretty extensive. The CLA building is what makes the campus stand out along with the huge ginormaous ugly parking structure. (Again, there's pluses and minuses to everything here) As an engineering student, I've had a small taste of about every program or department on campus. Let me start with the Math department. Out of the 7 or 8 different teachers I had, I'd only want to take 1 or 2 of them again. I don't know how some of these people are able to teach college level math courses. Thats the minus. The plus is I've never had a class greater than 35 students. Some of them were less. However, the Physics department is a big waste of time. My first physics class was taught my a grad. student who couldn't prove F=MA. Unfortunately there was a lot of information I missed out on in this class that I had to learn in other classes or myself. My advice to anyone is to check www.gradecalpoly.com before taking any teacher in the physics department. On to Engineering. The Engineering program at Cal Poly is ranked and pretty renowned. Since I can't make a comparison with other universities, I'll stop right here. I'll just say I've overheard professors saying they haven't had a peer review with their bosses (which is required by the university) for over 3 years. It definately shows in some of the performance by the professors. A good example is that some professors think that office hours is optional. Or I've sent emails and never got a response when the University makes this the official means of communication. The Engineering building is new and most of the equipment is relatively new with some exceptions. You'll still find equipment from the 70's lying around. One good thing about the program is that they try to weed out those underperforming students right away. There is no way you can get through this without knowing your shit. I know a lot of engineers turned business majors =] If you want to learn and pull up those sleeves, engineering might be for you. The dorms on this campus are digusting. I don't know how they expect human beings to live in some of these buildings. You're right next to the 10 freeway also. The bathrooms are terrible and Housing services is a joke(I got stories about them). Sometimes messes won't be cleaned for days at a time. The commons food is pretty consistent; crappy. You get served the same old slop each and every day. I can see they try to switch things up sometimes, but they fail miserably. I went to lunch there the other day for the first time in 2 years and I regretted it. That's the minus. Cal Poly does have some other housing options. The Suites (which are sort of like dorms but on a much nicer scale) are very comforable but do not have a kitchen. They're expensive, but right on campus. The Village is also another housing option. The village is made up student apartments across the street from campus (but still owned by the university). The Village ain't bad, but as with any apartment complex, you're going to have issues with noise and maintenace. Cal Poly is building up in just the years I've been here. There's a new Engineering building, Chemistry/Bio building, Student Center, parking structure(and police station), and Library(with 24 hour studyrooms/labs). A new Business building is going up soon and new suites are being built. There's a lot of empty land being used for farming and other agricultural purposes. Last comment about Cal Poly: You get what you pay for. This university is one of the cheapest in Southern California and cheapest in the nation. It's probably the best bang for your buck on most scales. It's definately worth checking out if you're budget concious. read more

I graduated many years ago as a Business major and at the time I thought Cal Poly was a decent school but nothing special, just a commuter school. But in retrospect I am so grateful I went to Cal Poly as I have been very successful in business thanks to the excellent education I received. I take secret pride when I meet with friends who spent a fortune attending USC and other high priced colleges because I am doing so much better than them with my degree from good old Cal Poly. I experienced studying in CPELI. To be serious, i didn't try other institutes, but i think it's the best institute to reach your goals, to approve your English, to take the IELTS, or TOFEL. The institute enforce you to be in the class on time and help you to be a regular student. Campus is nice. Parking is a piece of shit here. Came for a graduation and now I'm trying to leave the structure and not a single car is moving. But I look outside and I see cars in the out door parking all leaving. So seems like they lock down the structure so other people can leave first... Seems kind of messed up to me. I am currently an international student at Cal Poly university studying to improve my language in english. I had and still am having a great experience. I couldn't have wished for better teachers all of them are amazing and they make the lessons so interesting that you can't be bored. I will miss my amazing teachers Robert, Rebekah, and Craig after I'm finished with studying in the institution and I will miss studying in their classes, hopefully I can still be in contact with them even after I finish studying here at Cal Poly. read more

I don't give out five stars too freely but Cal Poly Pomona really deserves it! First, the campus is immaculate. Walkways are well-marked and free of debris. Gardens, ponds, and pools are beautifully maintained. Second, the administration always greets me pleasantly and quite helpful. The cafeteria manager Patrick is one of the nicest people I know for a very challenging position of feeding thousand plus a day. Cafeteria has good variety and food stations are well organized. Cal Poly is well-respected in several areas: Agricultural: They have their own Farm Store where they sell their home-grown vegetables, fruit, and meat. Engineering: Students themselves designed the pointy building at the base of the campus. Although it has now been announced unstable eek!, it is still testament to the creativity and ingenuity in this department. The Bio Trek department is also super cool. They have their own greenhouse complete with a crocodile? or is it an alligator and other slightly more exotic reptiles. And cocoa trees too! They also have a place on campus called the John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies. The mission of this center is to advance the principles of environmentally sustainable living. Lastly, the history that this school has with the Kellogg family and it's legacy of Arabian horses that are still cared for in the pastures is pretty interesting. read more

I attended Cal Poly Pomona for two years. The first year I lived in the dorms (Palmitas), I had the best time of my life. I met some of the best friends I could ever have. Our RA Danish was an idiot. Once we were watching a movie late at night and apparently it was too loud, so we turned it down to a point where he agreed. Then 5 minutes later he came back and wrote us up saying it was still too loud. Later in the year some people from 3rd floor literally defecated on the couch in the hall and urinated on some of the doors. I stopped by the dorm again in my 2nd year and there is now a picnic bench inside where the couch used to be....really? The school has a very strong "green" motto/sales pitch, yet every night the sprinklers come on and water flows through campus like a river, its laughable really. My second year I lived in the University Village, the semi-on-campus apartment style housing across the street from the university. To park in the village you need to swipe a card and the gate opens and the spikes retract. I'd guess that 80% of the time the spikes were broken, and about 30% of the time the gate was broken. It would take a week or more for them to replace the gate. On an average night you will see 1-2 stray cats wandering the village and don't plan on getting a parking spot either unless you find one on the weekend or during the middle of the day. Our air conditioning went out at one point during a very hot part of the year. We put in a work order and waited days for them to come out and fix it; they never did. I got tired of sitting in a room that was 90+ degrees so I went to Home Depot and bought an air conditioner. As I was putting it in our window a maintenance worker walked by and told us that we couldn't have it and to take it down, so I told them once they fixed our central A/C I would. They sent one of the directors of the Village over to our apartment and ordered us to take it out. Within an hour they had maintenance workers in our apartment fixing our A/C. If you want anything done you have to make a huge scene. Since the Village is across campus, it's a 20 minute walk to most of your classes. Cal Poly does have a bus system, that is usually pretty good. Sometimes the busses will go on break and you'll have to wait 30-40 minutes for one to come. Use broncoshuttle.com to track the busses' location. There are many places to eat on campus, the Los Olivos Commons is the dining hall for the people living in the dorms, it's good for awhile, but you get sick of it, like any dining hall. The other option if you have a meal plan is Vista Cafe. This was a very chill place to go to eat....until they got rid of half of their menu. The only thing I saw people eat there was a hamburger or a bread bowl of clam chowder. If you don't have a meal plan, you can choose from Subway, Carls Jr, Panda Express, Kikka Sushi, Taco Bell, and Round Table Pizza. Theres even a Starbucks on campus in the Library. No complaints here. For my freshman english class I had a fantastic teacher (Per Dahlin) so when it came time to take my freshmen english II class (I attempted this during my sophmore year) I signed up for the class she was teaching instead of taking a more fun class like science fiction. On the first day of class Cal Poly decided to give us a different teacher without letting us know. They had given us a black feminist that had decided to teach diversity. Now i'm not racist or anything, but I was expecting a class where we read interesting pieces of literature and had intelligent discussions with a teacher that genuinely made the class fun and thought provoking. That wasn't the case. I would rather have attempted to perform Lasik surgery on myself than sit through another day of her class. Why didn't I transfer out? Well that's because there's consistently 10+ people trying to add a given class, and that makes it impossible to get into anything. I did have my fair share of good teachers, and I had my fair share of bad teachers. Let me just clear some stuff up for those of you planning on going there. Never, and I repeat NEVER EVER take Farouk Darweesh for MFE126. Me and the other 3 of my friends in the class with me all had to teach ourselves solidworks, he probably could have explained things better by taking all the pieces in a scrabble board game and tossing them in the air and then trying to pronounce whatever jumble of letters landed on the table. Most classrooms have overhead projectors, speakers, and computers in the rooms, yet it astounds me how many of my teachers had no idea how to work the system. It also astounds me how many CHALK BOARDS are still around at Cal Poly. This campus is amazing, but I do wish I knew how to skateboard. There are so many hills around campus that it'd be 10x easier to navigate by skateboard. I love all my professors. There are a lot of easy As, but a few professors really challenge you to grasp it. I feel like the classes that you can use most often in life are harder, but for a good reason. A little hard to get major elective classes because they only offer them for certain quarters. read more

I'm currently attending this school; I'm in my third year. I like the environmnet, it got fresh air there. I like the greenish campus. It's true, classes are hard to get, many classes are closed before my enrollment appointmnet, but I guess most schools are like that? I'm in the graphic design major, they eliminate our college, the ENV college. I guess it's because our college is small, it's not like popular majors like Engineering and business in Cal Poly. We only have one small bulding, I guess that's not so bad, if it's too large I won't know alot people from my college. The science building is pretty cool, it's a glass building. I'm really sad to be wasting my time on writing a review for Cal Poly on Yelp. However, I really must forewarn new students of the headaches that you will endure. I'm a transfer student from another CSU; so, I am not new to how the university system works. The teachers are caring, which is nice. However, if you try to deal with anyone above the professors get ready to experience some mean, callus attitudes. I would compare the administration and staff to the workers in the Courthouses. Except why do they have such terrible attitudes? What gives them the right to treat people so poorly? Might I also include that this is an ongoing experience with ANY STAFF in ANY OFFICE I speak to. If I get any viewers from the Cal Poly Staff, might I remind you that I am a paying student. I don't expect smiling faces and overly exerted effort for kindness, but I do demand respect. I don't accept a faculty member sending me an email telling me to see below for his or her office hours as if I KNEW or HAD the information before hand. This was also an email I was expecting a reply from within two weeks, a reasonable time. Instead, it was over a month and I had to email the person back to get a response (Just one of my horrible experiences). In the future, I really hope that the Cal Poly staff can learn to appreciate their students, instead of treating them like crap. I intend to write a letter to President once I am done with my education and business there because its such a shame that anyone should continuously have to experience such frustration. read more

ah the weather was always nice wasn't it. able to wear lose comfortable clothing all year round. girls in shorts and to'up uggs? oh cpp! you slovenly boring cousin of a university. how i miss you. in the three years i lived in three of the university housing choices: palmitas dorms - all the dorms look like the projects. cedritos and palmitas are the weird shaped ones. the plus to palmitas is it was the "tech dorm" so free computer help from your homies. palmitas is also closest to classes which is quite an advantage when you're trekking up that hill on university drive. also when i was there palmitas had an outdoor balcony on the second floor which was a great gathering space, private talk space, heckling area, smoke area, and picnic space. the suites - specifically vista bonita. this was my favorite housing maybe because i lucked out and had the best roomies ever here. the suites would be perfect if they had stoves and ovens. otherwise the mandatory food plan is kind of ehhhhh. right on campus and near the soccer field. people are generally friendly and happy to be living there. and if you live on the first floor you can hop the patio. just don't be fooled or frightened by the snotty RAs they will undoubtably hire. the village - phase 1 and phase 3. the village was decent. the staff is uncaring and at times can be bumbling and rude making you pay for their mistakes. the village also employs two types of RAs people that just don't give an f and people whose only friends are other RAs and they enforce rules that are more trouble than they're worth. Don't tell me my room mate has a frog. I don't care. Don't say i have trash in my room when it was clearly a neat and tidy bag of plastic recyclables. the elevator was always breaking. getting into phase 1 without having a room mate already planned is a crapshoot (especially for the ladies). sadly, i didn't get along with the girl who kept a knife on her dresser and moved to my own room in phase 3. phase 3 has turbo powered toilets so watch out. one of the bathrooms is half the size of the bedrooms(wheelchair accessible i suppose?) and the other is as big as a broom closet. the village is a pleasant walk to campus and a short stroll to the farm store. other than housing the student center is a great place to sleep when you're homeless because university foundation has screwed you out of housing (location has no bearing in their selection. idiots!) the food places on campus are okay. the book store is pretty spacious and there's atleast 2 other book stores within reasonable walking distance not including mt. sac's. the peer to peer server, if you're badass enough is what made my experience here all worthwhile. millions of music, movie, tv, and program files at your finger tips and free! ah future world. other than that there's lots of places to go gamboling about on this vast campus you just has to jump start your imagination and forget that you're in a shithole. read more

Great school for technology. Most of the staff and students are friendly. The parking is insane, you could drive around for 30 minutes looking for parking. The overflow parking lot is far off. The parking permits are costly $125 approximately. Which is ridiculous when you can't find parking. God forbid you park in the wrong parking lot with a parking permit, $45 ticket. The only parking services I see checking for parking permits late at night with a flash light (lol, desperate) The women working at the Registrar's office are rude. After being on hold for 30 minutes, I asked a simple question and the woman hung up in my face. Unacceptable, I don't even know how she has a job. However, their office runs better than most universities, even though the staff is unfriendly. Not a school for campus life, frats and sororities are a joke (but they try). They have a large library and a 24 hour computer lab. They have a ridiculous no food in the library policy which is a complete joke when you are studying (studying + food = success). The food there gets played out fast and it's over priced. There are not many nearby restaurants around campus to get a quick decent bite. The closest food hub is in walnut. However there is a Starbucks, but they don't sell wine, and the lines are long. Picking up books after ordering it online can take 45 minutes plus, everyone hates it. On the plus side, the operators are friendly and helpful. The campus landscape is well kept, and the gardens are beautiful. read more
