Tony and I drove up to Beckley today to meet my cousin Shari Bush Parsons and her Best Friend Amber for dinner! I chose restaurant based on Shari's detailed information on their food. It was really good and very large. They have live music on the weekends. Tony and I split a 8" deep dish pizza w Pepperoni Sausage Onions and banana peppers. Tony's only complaint NOT ENOUGH sauce. But, he has that complaint everywhere...I thought it was perfect. Shari ordered Soft Pretzels w Cheese Sauce Appetizer and Amber ordered a dozen Buffalo Naked Wings w Blue Cheese and Ranch dips. Very good wings, not to hot! Perfect! Amber ordered a Cuban Pizza that had Pickles on it. It looked very interesting! I would have asked to try it but I was full on One large fat wing and a piece of deep dish pizza. Shari ordered Spaghetti w Meatballs that looked amazing w Garlic Bread. I Def want to try that next time! I'm still dieting but OMG its hard with Great looking food like this! Definitely recommend this restaurant! We gotta go back! Only 1.5hrs one way from our home! Calacino's is known to be a fun stop with live music, multiple screens for sports and a large bar. This place has a storied history dating back well into the 70s. It sat abandoned for years and was opened in the 2000s and after several renovations it's now it's current size and design. Walls are adorned with lots of local memorabilia and flare. The front half is also great for a quieter experience if you're not interested in too much noise. This was the first time I sat in the back half where the bar is and not the best experience. Server was okay, even though she went missing when we needed her most. There were plenty of people but no music, not even from the games playing on the TVs, it made for an odd atmosphere. The food was my least favorite. No vegetarian options even though there are the ingredients to do so. The crust of the deep dish pizza was good, but far too much cheese. The nachos literally came out with no cheese. Literally a plate of chips with a sprinkling of lettuce. The server brought us out a side cup of cheese, this left much to be desired. Also had the house salad which was topped off with cheese. I've enjoyed veg options here before not sure what happened. Would appreciate if these options were brought back just by using the ingredients already on the menu. Removed 1 star each for atmosphere, service and food. This is always a great stop when I'm in Beckley! Usually, I opt for a calzone. Today, I tried the Italian hoagie and some jalapeño poppers (cream cheese). Both were absolutely delicious. Service is great. My only recommendation would be that some WVU Tech memorabilia be displayed since Calacino's has a university sports theme. Marshall and WVU are both wonderful colleges, but it would be nice to see something from the college that is located in Beckley, as well. Maybe some jerseys on the wall or logos on a few tables? I think that would make local students and alumni feel more "in spirit." read more

Small portions with large prices. I ordered a white small pizza with mushrooms and sausage. I paid extra for the toppings and had to look closely for the sausage. Kind of Chintzy!. I got the manicotti and it was good but hardly had any garlic bread. I misunderstood the server as she asked me if I wanted a salad and I had thought it came with the meal but was charged 5 dollars each. It was a very bland salad but the most annoying thing was everything came pretty much at once. Had to set the salad aside to make sure I was going to eat my meal hot. If i'd never eaten here prior to the new owners. But we hadn't been in nearly a decade. Wow. This is no longer a family establishment. Wife and I entered the front dining room to b e met with stacked chairs and the lights off, the glorious brick oven cold and dark. I immediately said oh I don't think they're open. I wish I had been right. We were directed through what WAS the restaurant, to the back in what I can only describe as a barn bar. We were greeted with a giant room with tables just lined up. I kept wondering when the children were going ot come in and set up their science projects. I started looking around and realized at 1pm everyone in here is drinking, dude over there has at least a 2 gallon container he's pouring from. The waitresses, are now wearing belly shirts. Immediately asking what we want kind of beer we want. We order two cokes and a large pizza. We remember the pizza, but now I'm wondering where the new brick oven is. There isn't one. This pizza tasted and looked like bulk pizza bought from Sam's and put through one of those conveyer ovens. The pattern of the track it rested one was cooked into the bottom of the pizza. At this point wasn't much more for us to do but laugh at the situation. We concluded clearly someoen bought out the orginal just for the name and turned this once great family establishment into just another want to be sports bars where the most investment they made was all the TV's to keep people distracted. Now don't get me wrong, if we had been the TARGET demographic for the "new" Calicino's, it probably would have been great. But we didin't come in and immediately start downing gallons of beer so were able to actually taste the food and make some clear judgements. My partner and I stopped here on our road trip and I have to say... it wasn't great. The pizza was underdone, and the sauce was... stale/flavorless. My partner got the meat lovers pizza and I did a diy pineapple and basil pizza. The basil also wasn't fresh, and I was disappointed with that. Moreover, when we got there we were the only ones there and after we sat down and looked at the menu, two other parties came in after us (all white people.) Even though I had been sitting and waiting for her to get off of the phone, she still asked the people who came in after I did what they would like to drink, and brought it to them, before she asked me anything about my order. 2.5 honestly. It's was a $62 order for a burnt bottom pizza, 4 pepperoni "rolls", and some cold centered ribbon fries. I don't know man.... I can't say I was entirely impressed with this. I will say it was delivered ver quickly and the delivery person was delightful. The pizza was lackluster in flavor, burnt on the bottom, heavy handed in a basic sauce. (See the photos attached). We stopped in here for a late lunch after a tour at the exhibition coal mine. We found it very easily and there is a large parking lot. We went in and were seated right away. We had sandwiches for lunch which were made quickly, they were large and reasonably priced. THe food was really good. I hope to go back and try the calzone or pizza at some point. I typically never have issues with this restaurant. Going in is fantastic. I placed a DoorDash order for a fairly large sum well before they closed for the night. They confirmed the order, said they were preparing it and accepted my payment. When my Dasher goes to pick it up, the restaurant is closed. she was out a tip she needed and waited 20 minutes to be sure. Luckily, I was able to have the money refunded to my original form of payment but my family didn't eat dinner this night, because of the confusion, the restaurant left everyone in. I don't recommend placing any type of mobile order with them and if you do triple check to see if your food is actually being prepared. Post payment. We ordered a doordash order, and the first thing I noticed was that the order was piping hot, which was good. But it went downhill from there. I had spaghetti with meat sauce, which was awful. The sauce was not "saucy" and it was too sweet. The pasta was basically dry. My daughter had fettuccine alfredo with chicken which she said tasted like a commercially packaged chopped chicken in a jarred sauce, definitely nothing to write home about. We each had an order of meatballs that were great, though, so we didn't go hungry. Those portions were large enough to be an entree, although they were listed as sides, and they were smothered in mozzarella and sauce. They should have used that sauce on the spaghetti. It went great with the garlic toast. We also each had the lemon cream cake, that was obviously a store bought dessert. It was dry and tasteless. Stopped here for a pizza to eat on the road as I travel from visiting family in the area. I ordered a half cheese/half pepperoni pizza. The crust tasted like a water cracker, the sauce was meh and overall the pizza was a knotch above the frozen stuff. The pizza is in the front, and there is a sports bar in the back. Don't confuse them. The sportsbar is packed, while there is lots of seating in the pizzeria. Arrived at lunchtime to sit outside for lunch. The outside seating is a bit dingy. Server caught us as we were walking in and asked what we wanted to drink and handed us menus to take to the table. Well, it took about 15 minutes to get drinks at which time she took our order. Our order arrived 30 minutes later, barely edible (cold and not how I ordered it) but we didn't have time to complain or wait. My diet coke was flat and she took it to replace it when she brought the food, but my drink never reappeared until we were completely done eating! Yikes. Not a good experience. Then she gives us the bill and there is a CCPC charge of $2.95 for us using a credit card. She immediately said, "We don't charge the fee, the credit card co. does"...like that makes it better. The atmosphere has a lot of positive energy! The food is great, I really like the pizza and wings. The Dominic with Carolina Gold wings and you can't go wrong! You want a burger or Philly? They have those too! They host events like live music and trivia. A lot of crowd participation during both. It gets a little loud and rowdy at times. It's a great home town place with zero corporate/chain restaurant feel. Just local owners and a great staff keeping a tradition going in Beckley, WV... It is a nice piece of Boomer and Gen-X history. The place has some nostalgia and some unique items on the menu. Truthfully, it is a great experience and I go almost every week. I feel lucky to have this hidden little gem in Beckley. read more
