HORRIBLE is what I can say: Waited over an hour for eggs toast hash browns and BURNT corned beef hash. When we complained the server said they were short staffed and she said if you are not happy then don't come back!, Trying to support an independent local business but NOT anymore! It's been a couple of years since I've dined in here. It is much cleaner, with better organized seating. The ceilings are disgusting, dropped a star down for that. All of the servers were super friendly, attentive and worked as a team. Our drinks were delicious! The food was great too, our only critique would be the lettuce used on the burger. They should replace iceberg lettuce with a different kind of green. I have been to Calas kitchen a few times and each time I came here I liked it a lot. Calas is one of those places that you grew up with. The decoration is sparse but what matters here is the food. Each time I was here, I've been here for the breakfast service and one time for dinner service. From the front of the place looks like they have limited parking but when you go around the back, there is tons of parking. The breakfast really feels home cook and comfort food. Everything was really flavorful and anything I needed was greeted with a smile and no problem. The pricing is also great. You won't go broke eating here for sure. Over all I love this place and will be back for sure. read more

I eat here every time I'm in Derby, it's literally some of the friendliest service I've ever had... The (Owner? Manager?) walks around no matter how busy it is, and greets everyone, asks how they are, and refills coffee and water himself. He always has a song or a compliment to offer. The service is fast, the pancakes (and all breakfast items, actually) are delicious... The coffee is great (extra points for flavored creamers) I've never eaten dinner here, but I imagine it would be up to the same standards. It's a pleasure coming here. read more

Came in for a late breakfast and had a not so good experience. The eggs on our sandwiches came out wrong, same with the pancake I ordered. She dropped off the food and never came back to check on us so I wasn't able to tell her the food was wrong until the end. On top of that when I finished eating there was a hair on the plate. Normally I wouldn't ever review bad for calas since I come pretty often and had never had a problem. The waitress only took off the pancakes because I didn't touch it. She also made a comment saying "you didn't notice your eggs were wrong until you finished it" actually no you just never checked on us and I wasn't gonna wait for another meal. If that was me I wouldn't have charged for the meal with the hair on it either. We ended up tipping 20% as always. She did say she messed up the order. The whole situation was just very strange and should've been handled differently. read more

We went there today may 15 , 2016 at 12:15pm , seated ourselves, and waited a very long time until 3 people who just walked in were served before us and we left. I have to say though that when the portly jolly man is working , i think he is the owner as i have eaten there many times before, the service was great and he goes out of his way to please customers. Food was decent but the service was lacking. Walked in after church around 10:45, waited five minutes for someone to acknowledge that we were there. Told to seat ourselves (A simple sign suggesting that we seat ourselves would've sufficed but not a big deal). After waiting 15 minutes, the order was finally taken (at 11:01 according to the bill). We then continued to wait almost 45 minutes (11:44 to be exact) until two of us were served breakfast while the other two of us continued to wait another 8 minutes for our meal and one of those meals was served cold (eggs luke warm and cheese shreds still cold and not melted). In the meantime, others patrons around us who came in upwards of 20 minutes after us finished their breakfast and paid their bill before we were served. It was clear that the server failed to put the order in because it was a simple breakfast that would take no more than five minutes at home yet there were no apologies for the delay whatsoever! The food was was good but it is highly unlikely that we will return because the service was so lacking. A simple apology for the delays would've been fine but was never offered with multiple opportunities to do so. It was good to see the owner of the place moving around and engaging with the customers which makes us feel bad for our decision not to return. read more

I never knew about Cala's until meeting a nice boy from Derby. I wasn't sure what to think when we pulled up into a mini strip mall for my first experience there. We found a booth for ourselves and ordered. My ham and cheese omelet was amazing, as was the service. During our breakfast, the owner walked around the diner, asking customers how their meal was and how they were doing. He even mentioned my bf's family by name. This kind of service goes a long way for me. We have spent many a Saturday morning chowing down at Cala's and plan to for many more years to come. read more

Not sure why most of these reviews say they have quick service.. I just spent over a half an hour waiting for my breakfast! It's not like cooking scrambled eggs would be hard.. Had to get two drinks because we waited so long which at $3 a pop for orange juice was almost as much as my meal! Cala's kitchen was our Mom's favorite place in Derby to go after church on Sundays. So when our Mom passed away, we knew to contact Vinny immediately to cater her luncheon reception. He put together a brunch feast of her favorites, including chocolate chip pancakes. We also had a special request for self serve ice cream sundaes (because our mom loved ice cream), and he was able to provide ice cream, toppings and sprinkles. Vinny was so helpful over the phone and it was reassuring knowing that everything would be taken care of. His food is consistently delicious, his prices are reasonable and Vinny always makes sure his customers are happy. That is why we love Cala's Kitchen for both dining in and catering.
