Calder Dairy's products are absolutely the best. As a 75 year old connoisseur of chocolate milk, I can say quite confidently that Calder's chocolate is #1 hands down. Nobody comes close to its richness. My friend and I recently visited Calder Dairy Farm. Our goal was to pet cows and eat ice cream, an annual summer tradition. Since my last visit, they've enlarged the grounds making it more inviting to families and school groups, which as a former teacher, I appreciate. Besides cows, there are plenty of chickens, pigs, ducks, peacocks, goat, and geese to see. It was fun to watch a group of ducks circling around the grounds looking like they were on a mission. Everyone seemed to enjoy the parade. The farm's store is stocked with fresh Calder products, including ice cream, which you can buy in a carton or order in cones. Off to the side of the store, there is a large dining room, which can accommodate small and large groups. I highly recommend all of the Calder products and hope you have the opportunity to visit the farm. read more

What a great experience! My husband had his grandkids over and we were looking for something to do with them. I suggested this place and it didn't disappoint! It was a little chilly when we went, but the kids got to see all the animals. My son loved the geese and ducks and couldn't get enough of them. I bought some food from the store to feed the goats and ducks and all the kids loved it. The food conveyor belt was a lot of fun because the goats waited on the platform for it to dump out. One goat even got the food dumped all over his head! It was awesome to see the longhorns up close - although it was quite intimidating too. The store had a great variety and there were plenty of ice cream flavors to sample and choose from. Nice outing for the family. read more

We dropped by Calder Dairy & Farm on a sweltering Labor Day, lured in by the promise of cute farm animals and delicious ice cream. We found that the animals were definitely numerous and cute. The ice cream, however, was disappointing. Double Waffle Bowl ($5.49) - This comes with 4 scoops of ice cream; we chose the Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Blue Moo, and Cake Batter. The ice cream here is... not the best. More overrun than I was expecting from a super premium ice cream, resulting in an ice cream softer and less creamy than from most other specialty ice cream shops. Yes, it is still way better than grocery store brands, but I was expecting more after all the hype. However, an extra problem arose here - ice crystals. Especially in the cookie dough, it felt like a quarter of the ice cream had changed into ice. I could even see the ice in the scoop and it added an unpleasant crunch and texture. Not a great feeling. I was surprised as this issue was very apparent in the chocolate chip cookie dough - which is supposed to be one of their most popular flavors and the highest turnover. They also do sell a variety of milk, butter, eggs, meat, etc in the farm store. Unfortunately we couldn't get anything since it was 90+ degrees out and the farm is a pretty long drive away from home. We'll probably go to the Calder Dairy Lincoln Park store to pick some up in the future. Otherwise, the farm is a very fun way to spend the afternoon. They have a wide variety of animals and you can buy feed in the store to feed them. They have cows (you can see them getting milked at 4 PM), chickens, geese, guineas, peafowl, rabbits, pigs, donkeys, sheep, goats, and at least two cats. I definitely recommend going to Calder just to see all the animals. I do not recommend the ice cream, at least not from this location. Honestly, if I were rating the ice cream in a vacuum, this review would likely be a 2 star. read more

We went on a weekend so we missed the milking experience but tbere were so many animals that he could see and he absolutely loved it. This review is about the disgusting behavior of the owners of this dairy farm at a restaurant in Detroit. Sitting next to a table of four trying to enjoy my anniversary dinner, and this foursome were nothing but awful, loud, and trashy to the staff. The blonde female "matriarch" who kept loudly complaining about her children, and treated staff poorly ruined our experience. When the server announced that the "sorbet of the day" was a tropical fruit made with coconut milk, the shit show got worse. The woman started freaking out, stating loudly, "It's NOT milk, there's NO almond milk, there's NO coconut milk, or soy milk! Milk comes from MAMMALS!!! I own Calder Dairy Farm, where actual MILK is made!!! I'm so sick of you people trying to say this is milk!" The whole entire section of the quiet restaurant was focused on her screeching. Wow. It wasn't the server's fault, or maybe the entire food industry in this country that doesn't want to eat, or is allergic to dairy, it's an option. The server was profusely apologizing trying to calm this woman down, yet it wasn't good enough. I truly wonder how much this woman pays her farmers, but more importantly how she treats them. To cause a scene and degrade a person just trying to do their job, to us, was unbelievable. After these people left, we asked the server if they tipped accordingly, especially after all of that drama, and they did not. The server wouldn't give us actual numbers, but for the mental stress, they should've tipped at least 30 to 40 percent. So my review is about the behavior of this business owner, and how poorly this group treated people. They killed the whole mood of people around them and the staff. They basically brought negativity to my dinner date, as well as many others in the vicinity of the restaurant. Yes, I've had their chocolate milk & ice cream, good, but not worth the price. It was a chilly early spring day, too wet for yard work and too sunny for staying indoors. What else could we do but "Road Trip"? We packed up the Piper the Pom (a.k.a. "Pretty Pom Princess") and headed out to Calder's. I was used to going to the Lincoln Park outlet ( I drove by it for years to and from work) to get sour cream and butter ( I was never much a fan of their ice cream), and thought it'd be a great place to walk around and see something new. Big mistake! For one thing, the roads leading to the farm are pockmarked with potholes and treacherous to drive. Once we got there we realized that the sun hadn't dried out the mud enough to walk around. But the big problem was Piper! The sign clearly states that if you have a pet you need to turn around now! Not stay with your pet or take turns with babysitting your pet, but "LEAVE"! I offered to stay in the car if my sister wanted to do some shopping but we felt so uncomfortable that we left immediately. We won't be back. read more

My cousin lives about a mile away from here and tipped me off about the place while I was there visiting. I thought it sounded like a fun place to take the kids so we stopped in on the way home. I'm glad we did. It's a big enough farm that you get the sense of being on a real deal working farm. But it's small enough that it has the intimacy of a petting farm. A great place to take the kids. Plus once you're done touring the farm and petting the critters there is ice cream to be had. Who doesn't like freshly churned ice cream? While we were there we saw cows, horses, ponies, goats, pigs, bunnies, chickens, roosters, ducks, geese, peacocks, and pheasants. There were lots of baby cows and a baby pig that was cute as a button. For every couple animals behind bars there was one wandering freely (including a cow and some pigs). They also encourage you to help feed the animals, which is a lot of fun. You get a sense of closeness and live interaction with the animals here unlike any other "open to the public" farm I have ever been to. We will definitely be stopping back in next time we are out in the area. It's a little bit out of the way, from anywhere really, but it's worth the trip. Did I mention there is no admission charge? The best place, ever! If you love animals you have got to come here! Inside the store you can buy feed for the ducks/geese, goats, bunnies and donkeys.. you can feed this to any animal except for the cows, they eat hay. The goats here are hysterical, they are like little clowns desperate for some extra food. Not because they're hungry, just because they are greedy little bastards (in the friendliest possible way). The donkeys are the cutest creatures on this planet, but beware of the miniature horses; they are nippy.. do not touch! Geese roam around freely, so do several massive pigs. Though when we visited we found them passed out in a stack of hay, snoozing and snoring. If you stand in front of the cows, there is a white building to the left. Enter through that door and a ton of newborn calphs await you. Best surprise ever! Also inside are some (smaller variety) pigs. Before you leave stop back by the store. They have sinks for handwashing (yay) and ice cream (double yay). Also: they sell their cocolate milk, which I think is the best around. read more

One of my favorite places to take the kids to. This place is off the beaten path in a very quiet peaceful country like setting. This is a place that is never crowded with people, so service is quick and the staff is very friendly. The kids love to see the farm animals. Its a very close up close and personal experience with the cows, goats, ducks, horses, bunny rabbits, chickens, e.t.c. We especially love to feed the goats. You can buy feed for the animals in the store on site for only a few bucks. Well worth the experience. The goats will come to the fence and eat it right off your hand. The place is a free roam zone. What I mean by this is that you can walk around the entire place at your own leisure & pace and not feel pressured by any other customers/visitors and/or staff members. Everytime we go there everyone you meet there is always friendly. Don't forget to stop in the store before your take your tour around the farm to see the animals. There you can get your ice cream to go with you. There are a ton of flavors to choose from and all very good. That is our favorite thing to do.....bring your ice cream with you. You can also bring your own snacks and drinks if you want to. There is no pressure to buy from the store if you don't want to. Just be respectful and don't litter is all the owners expect. The store on site also has a variety of things you can buy there besides ice cream. There is milk, butter, and other dairy products as well as meat also sold there. Their products are generally of very good quality, but their service to local businesses purchasing in bulk is horrendous. Several times they have failed to deliver ordered goods for my wife's bakery and didn't have the courtesy to let us know. We only learn that they are out something when they simply didn't deliver what we ordered, which doesn't allow us to plan accordingly to purchase from a different supplier. Not having the inventory, while annoying, would be fine if they were to simply communicate that they are unable to fulfill the order when placed. But taking an order and giving the impression that you will fulfill it only to come up short is unacceptable, frustrating, and bad business. Bottom line: if you're a business and need goods delivered when you order them, go somewhere else. read more

We paid attention to the signs which indicated the animals that might be nippy and had a completely uneventful time...except the cow that thought my granddaughter's dress looked good enough to eat. She gave her a big lick and then nibbled her dress. My granddaughter loved it! There was also a little kitten roaming around that did not mind being held and cuddled for a long time. I found Calder Brothers Dairy through their store at first. I was working in Lincoln Park one day and wanted an ice cream cone for the ride home. I stumbled upon a gem that day. I kept stopping in every time I ended up in Lincoln Park and after standing in the doorway and watching them make ice cream and learning that the milk comes from their own farm I branched out into milk, butter, sour cream... You just can't get natural milk from anyone else these days and that's shame because it's what milk is supposed to be. Cream on the top and full fat milk can't be beat. Plus their cows graze on Michigan pasture, they are a family business and now they deliver to a bunch of retail outlets. I should mention that they also offer low fat milk, which honestly is what I buy most of the time. And all of the milk comes in glass bottles. Glass makes milk taste better. Period I generally get my Calder products at Westborn market these days. read more

This is an amazing place to bring the kids. It was educational for my "city" kids to see the baby cows being fed and the animals in the farmyard. The dairy cats running about fat from fresh milk were a particular draw to my daughter. My son, on the other hand, had a ball chasing the geese and ducks on the edge of the little pond. The ice cream is amazing. Looking closely at the ingredient labels underneath the flavor titles, there are no "unnatural" ingredients for most choices (ok, when you delve into the obviously unnatural like bubble gum flavored ice cream, there isn't any natural way to concoct that). I had the peach ice cream this weekend and it was amazing with chunks of real peaches made with cream and plain sugar. The portion size is huge and the pricing reasonable. We also purchased butter, sour cream, milk, and buttermilk to take home with us. We made biscuits with the buttermilk and they were divine. The richness of fresh buttermilk is something lost between the dairy, the packaging plant, and the supermarket. Overall, this is an amazing place to visit. read more

My husband and I were trying to figure out a fun, inexpensive and outside Ann Arbor activity for an extremely HOT Sunday afternoon, when we thought, what the heck, why not check out where the milk we buy comes from. The Calder Dairy Farm (not where they pasteurize/process the milk and other dairy products) is about a 45 minute drive from Ann Arbor in Carleton, MI. It is quite a trek through farmland and winding country roads, but well worth the trip. As we drove up the long, dirt driveway to the farm, we were greeted by chickens, goats, roosters and other farm animals just walking around like they owned the place. The animals were friendly though, and were happy to let you give them a pat on the head. We walked into the store to get some ice cream, after all that was the purpose of this trip. The store sells quite a variety of ice cream flavors that you can buy by the dish/cone, or even purchase by the pint for consumption at home. In addition to ice cream, you can buy milk, butter, cream and other dairy products. The majority of the products are Calder Dairy, but there are a few random cheeses and butter from other companies. The ice cream is all Calder though. After trying a couple flavors, I settled on the Peanut Butter and my husband chose the Chocolate Chocolate Chip. The ice cream was some of the best ice cream I have ever eaten; it is extremely rich, thick, creamy and delicious. Three things that I really liked about the ice cream were: (1) the ice cream was smooth, not icy, like you sometimes get; (2) the peanut butter was mixed in; in other words, it wasn't just vanilla ice cream with chunks of peanut butter; and (3) the ice cream seemed to get even better as it melted, which happened quite quickly in the 95 degree heat. I don't know how to say this, but it melted in a way that it was still thick and creamy, not thin and watery. Not only was the ice cream a-one, but the portions were HUGE. We got a single scoop and I felt like it was too much for me. I would probably get a kiddie cup or share next time. The only negative I will say is the staff were hesitant about letting you try the different flavors and were not super talkative or knowledgeable about the company. They were fine though. The staff did know more about the animals when asked. Probably the most fun part of this trip was as we ate our ice cream, we could walk around and look at/pet the animals (probably not the most sanitary, but whatever). They also have baby cows and goats, which are the cutest things ever! I will definitely come back here in the future, even though it is a little out of my way. read more

I live in Livonia and love taking the 45 minute drive down to Calder Dairy in the summer. This is a great (cheap) family fun event. The farm is free! Walk around, pet the animals, feed the goats, see the baby cows and also walk through the milk processing area. It really only costs as much as you want to spend on ice cream or other of their on-site made dairy products. The chocolate milk and chip dip are delicious! It a great way to spend time with your family and not break the bank. read more

We had 4 cake cones (banana, cookies and cream and 2 chocolate) . No kids portion or cups unfortunately.so expect big portions and some sugar rush from your mini me/s definitely. My 3 year old banana ice cream wasn't compressed firmly on the cone and it landed on the floor 3 seconds after it was passed to him, we used some napkins to clean it up and when we told the staff of what happened to the cone (this is while waiting for the 3 other cones to be ready) , she did not have a reaction to it and continued scooping on the other cones without any form of acknowledgments. We are not looking for apologies nor wanting to ride on a free cone but i think it is just unpleasant to be paying for something that you did not even get to enjoy. I really love this place. There are tons of animals here: peacocks, donkeys, horses ducks, fish, pigs, rabbits, cats, turkeys, and of course cows. The turkeys get a little crazy in the springtime, so keep your children close. The baby cows are the most fun: they like to play and jump around. There is a barn in the back that is easy to miss that is full of the pregnant animals, if you want to check that out. Inside you will find a local teen girl behind the counter ready to serve you the ice cream of your choice. In the fridge there is birch beer, fresh milk, and eggs. There is some candy for the kids as well as the best jam and syrup around. Fun place for the whole family. Get some ice cream, play with the animals, feed the ducks. I visited Calder Farm a few days ago with a friend of mine while I was visiting Michigan. It was a fun little trip because we got lost on this long winding path that led us to you guys and we got to try the cotton candy ice cream which was delicious! However, the more I walked through the facility the sadder I got. I love visiting farms and petting zoos, but I could tell that the animals here were not being taken care of properly. There were 3-4 adult rabbits stuffed into a tiny hutch along with 2-3 baby rabbits and one of the babies was dead! On top of it, many of the cows had discharge running from their eyes and noses, all of the calves were separated from their mothers, some of the calves had sores from where they were dehorned, and at least 3 animals (2 sheep and 1 donkey) were lethargic and unresponsive to touch. The land is beautiful and I enjoyed watching the ducks play in the lake, so there are some positives here, but it's obvious that Calder Farm cares more about money than the welfare of their animals. read more
