As parents we try our best to "teach" our kids perseverance, courage, dedication, accountability, confidence, etc. But if you want a place where your kids can LEARN all these things, California Karate Dojo is the place! Sensei Scott creates an environment where our kids become fully accountable for their actions inside and outside of the dojo. I really appreciate that he takes time to review how his students are behaving at home, and performing at school and other extra curricular activities (not just karate). Sensei Scott does not sugarcoat his approach as he pushes his students to be their absolute best. Note that this place is not for the faint of heart. My son started at the Dojo 4 years ago and my daughter about 2 years ago. I'm forever grateful to Sensei Scott for their success inside the dojo but really for all their success outside of the dojo. My son has been attending this dojo for the last 4 months. I have a lot of good things to say about it. Pricing 9/10 I always look at this as part of my criteria when joining any group and then based on other criteria determine if it's worth the price. Typically martial arts dojo's/schools charge for different levels of attendance. (1x per week, 2x, weapons, sparring, etc.) plus they can even charge for belt tests and the newly acquired belt. California Karate doesn't work this way at all. It's one single price for all students that includes unlimited classes and all tests. This makes it really easy especially considering it offers a lot and the price is the same or lower than most other dojos. My only negative is that it's cash based unless you do a monthly autopay. Skills 8/10 The dojo includes a main instructor named Scott and his assistant Ron. Both instructors seem very qualified to coach the kids. Scott is younger and works with the kids showing techniques in perfect execution with strong attitude. The class breakdown works as follows. Two days a week is kata and practicing skills. Two days a week is sparring. And every Friday is review which mostly includes kata and skills. They let the kids practice individually on kata days while the instructors move around the class and provide quality feedback as needed. On sparring days one instructor is the referee counting the score in Japanese which is fun and exciting while the other instructor gives feedback to the students in between rounds and at the end of the fight. It's a no BS feedback system and seems to work. Dojo 7/10 It's fairly clean with mirrors, trophies and belts all over the walls. It seems a little cramped during large classes but class sizes vary. They manage the space well but many times it requires kids to sit while other kids spar. It's not a bad thing bc kids can learn while watching. There's lots of kicking bags, BOBs and weapons for use as well. Ventilation is ok but I notice it's pretty warm on hot days. This is good for the kids to stay warm but requires more water breaks which are allowed. There's a small area for the parents and siblings to hang out while class is in session. It just has plastic chairs but has good visibility to the class. Most parents are filming. This area also has a TV used when the instructor shares videos for review with the students. Professionalism 9/10 I've really enjoyed speaking with both instructors about karate, life and the kids. They are passionate and it shows. They manage the class very well and are well liked by the students due to the skill, comedy and respect they display consistently. Both instructors hold the students accountable and teach both karate and its translation to life. I think that's bonus and handled very well. They even have parents bring in report cards and other impressive awards that the students receive outside of the dojo and hang them on a wall for display. This earns you respect from the instructors and fellow students. They also will go the other way if you act poorly in class or out of class by taking away your belt which keeps you from participating in some portions of the class and hurts the respect level. I like both. Overall - 8.5/10! read more

I was looking for a physical activity for my 5 year old. I googled karate classes and this was one of the first ones to pop up in West Covina. I called spoke to Scott the instructor and owner of the dojo he was very informative allowed my son to come check out one class before we decided to register him. At first my son did not seem to like it he has been coming for about 1 month now and he really enjoys it. The sensei works great with all kids all ages. My little brother and I both attended the dojo. I was 18 when I started and my brother was 4. Sensei Scott really has a way of pushing his students to be the best they can be, regardless of age. In the dojo, as well as in the classroom, or in the workplace. Many students have had significant increases in grades at school as well as manners and behavior at home. Sensei Scott gives his students equal amounts of one on one attention as well as attention to the entire group. The curriculum here showcases the highest qualities that each student must attain in order to proceed to the next belt. So you can't come in here and think that belts are just given to anyone who is gives less than 100% everyday. This dojo is really not for kids to mess around in. It's definitely not a daycare center. If that is what you're looking for then this is not the dojo for you or your child. But if you're looking for a dojo that teaches that karate is more than a routine of moves that "look cool". It's really a lifestyle that is to be used in the dojo as well as the outside world. Then you have definitely found the right place. Our experience at California Karate Dojo has been awesome. My oldest starting coming here after he took the weekly beginners class at his school.
