Best wine in Elgin and very friendly staff. Los milics was top rated as one of the best tasting rooms in the country, but the wines at Callaghan are unmatched when it comes to the actual wine. Absolutely stellar wines! It is hard to decide when you are in town for a day or two and there are so many. Do not sleep on Callaghan though! Their tasting room is welcoming and friendly, and while it is not fancy pants, the wine more than makes up for it. You have the option of picking your own flight (5 choices from their list) or doing a reserve tasting. I did the former, but I would like to go back for the latter. Despite the funny names of some, I really enjoyed them. I did the Love Muffin white, a sparkling, the Love Muffin rose, the Noble red, and a Montepulciano that was hands down the best Monte I have had in the state. I ended up taking home a bottle of almost everything, as did my friend. We also were given a "bonus" taste of their white dessert wine, which came paired with a lemon cookie. That was delightful and quite a pleasant surprise for two non-sweet drinkers. For the longest time, I thought I knew which was my favorite winery in the state of Arizona, and while that one is still a good choice, Callaghan is my new favorite in the state! read more

I hadn't been to Callaghan in almost a year, but it did not disappoint. I was really happy that they're store inside was open again, since it was all closed up because of 2020. Their tastings came out on beautiful wooden boards and each was better then the last. . My favorite was definitely Love Muffin Red and I would definitely suggest stocking up on bottles while you are there before they are gone! We loved finding the Sonoita AVA wine region in Arizona. Who knew that we would find some really lovely wines in Arizona, but we did. We stopped into Callaghan Vineyards and the owners were pouring. We had such a good time chatting with them and trying each of their lovely wines. What we discovered in tasting wines in the area, they charge an average of $10 per tasting and that gives you 5 tastings and you choose the wines, along with a glass. If you take the glass to the other wineries, they will take $3 or so off your tasting. You can also take your own glass to get the discount price for the tastings. Callaghan wines all had a smooth finish and deep flavors. We found several out of the 5 we tried that we loved. Definitely will go back when in the area. read more

Ok Napa Valley wine snobs, get ready to get blown away. I stopped in with low expectations with a group of 8 but after just a couple of tastings I began to realize that Arizona is producing some kick ASS wine. For $10 ($5 if you bring your own glass) you will be treated to 5 generous pours of Arizona's finest. Each every glass was unique and top quality. Our server (Allison) was delightful and knowledgable. She took the time to explain each pour and made our experience super enjoyable. The tasting room is casual and is basically a warehouse. Callaghan was recommended to us by pretty much every other winery we stopped at, so we couldn't pass it up. Apparently they're kind of the OG in the area and they certainly have more vines planted I'm site than anyplace else. Don't go in here and expect a fancy- pants space - the tasting area is pretty much a section of their warehouse. Tastings are $7 for 6 pours if you have a glass. One of the things I liked best about Callaghan is the huge variety available. They have 3-4 roses and maybe 6 whites, plus a dozen types of red. I'm a white/Rose gal so this made me really happy. Overall - really good drinkable wine at decent prices. Staff was friendly too. I could see this place turn into a hot mess when it gets crowded but we didn't have any issues. read more

Our first stop on a 3 winery tour of Sonoita today. What a fantastic local Az winery. We missed Kiva, the infamous Wheaton Terrier. We sampled 3 reserve reds and took home memento wine glasses. This location offers a great front porch with Mountain Views. Perfect for warmer days. They were pretty crowded today which made lingering for small talk and sampling a few more wines a bit of a challenge. This can easily become a fav locale and I can see us returning many times in the near future!! read more

I'm used to the scenic wineries of Virginia, so when we drove up the Callaghan, I wasn't quite sure what to expect! My first impression wasn't so great, looking at just the building itself, but then looking down the street, I realized this is what all the wineries in the area look like. As soon as we entered, we were pleasantly greeted by Kiva (the owner's dog). We spent a few minutes browsing the art they have on sale and then went to the tasting bar. We were given a list of wines and were told we should pick 5 for our tasting. The tasting price is $5 if you already have a glass and $10 if you need a glass. We opted for the latter. I can't remember all of the wines we tried, but I remember liking them all a lot. Each of them had unique flavors. I ended up getting a bottle of the 2012 Lisa to take home - it was my fave! The owners are super friendly and made the tasting experience a lot of fun. Kiva is super sweet too. She pretty much keeps to herself and doesn't bother anyone, so even if you aren't a huge fan of dogs, you shouldn't hesitate to visit. There's limited seating inside, but most people just stood around the bar area as they had their tasting. They also have some snacks available for purchase. read more

We visited Callahan Vineyards as one of the stops on a winery tour. They were very busy and the wine was very good. I would have given them more stars but was very disappointed when I went to purchase wine and the pricing on the tasting sheet was less than what they charged me. When I brought it to their attention the young female said she could not offer the bottle pricing that was listed on the tasting menu because the sheets were from 3 weeks ago and they have new pricing. Not only is that not good customer service, in my opinion, but friends of mine that were with me were charged the price listed on the tasting sheet. I would recommend stopping at Callaghan's for a tasting just make sure that you verify the pricing before purchasing. read more

Callaghan is my favorite winery in the area. All their wines are dry, so if you only like sweet wines, it's not the spot for you. If you're a bold red drinker like myself, definitely stop in. I've visited multiple times and I belonged to their wine club for a short time. The tasting room associates are always nice, and Kent is usually around. When I think of a winemaker, I think of a pompous person, but Kent is super down to earth. Most recently, I stopped in and had a regular tasting (you can choose five wines off their menu), and I stuck with all reds. I tried the Back Lot, Tempranillo, Al's, Ruth's, and Padres. I took a bottle of the Padres home, and I liked the Tempranillo as well. The others didn't quite have the profile I was looking for. They do have a reserve tasting, which I wanted to try, but I was afraid I would like the wines and have to buy them, and they had a higher price point ($40-50). Most wineries in the area will serve glasses of wine, but they don't here. You taste, buy, and move on. I think they should comp your tasting if you buy wine. That would keep me coming back and purchasing. The tasting room here is very minimalist compared to others in the area. I love the wine, so I'll always stop in, but it's not comfortable to hang out here. I'd say Callaghan is the polar opposite of Hops and Vines, where the atmosphere is the reason to go and the wine is average at best. Here, they really focus on the wine, and it shows, as they have many award winners. read more

This winery boasts award-winning wines and some were pretty great. It was interesting ti see all the wines with their respective awards/ribbons. The Lisa's 2014 was enjoyable. Though they had many to choose from, I find that they were all pretty similar and I just couldn't find a wine to fit my particular taste. The people there were very friendly too. Our experience here wasn't as eventful as in other wineries and Im confused why we paid $7 when we already had our glass vs the $5 that I see on other reviews but oh well. Wine tasting was one of my favorite activities pre covid. However, March changed everything. Because I'm in a high risk category for covid I'm very careful. I haven't been in public spaces other than to buy groceries since March. Yesterday I just needed something that felt normal. I hoped some normal was possible. So off for wine tasting we went. To be clear, I only went to establishments following Covid protocols. If you are looking for "normal" with great wine in a safe relaxed environment this is your place. You are greeted outside and offered two tasting choices. From there, you go to a clean socially distanced patio. They bring your tastings in portion cups with the wine name written on them. In fact, my mom just let them choose her tastings. There wasn't one she didn't like. I always leave this place with a couple bottles. Yesterday was no exception. Sitting outside laughing around other people also celebrating life filled me with happiness and contentment. These moments we used to take for granted are more precious now. However, none of this is possible without your family's commitment to safety. I appreciate you taking care of my family and all your customers. I know it comes with a sacrifice. Before heading to Arizona on this vacation I had done some research on things we could do in this part of the state. I didn't print anything out or write any notes, but I made a mental note that there were vineyards in this part of AZ and I knew I would be interested in doing some tastings and figured Sue would be as well. When we met up with my friend the day we arrived up in Scottsdale I had mentioned going to wine country when we were down visiting this part of the state. She told me she didn't think there were any wineries in state. Or at least none that she heard of. I started to doubt myself. Maybe senility was starting early for me. Turns out I'm not going insane. There is wine country in and around Elgin, AZ. Not very far from where we were staying in Patagonia. After looking at a map of the area, Sue and I charted a course. We thought we might do 3 or 4 vineyards, but only ended up doing 2 as we didn't allot enough time for more. Our first stop was Callaghan. A tip for those not in the know about this wine country. It seems most of the vineyards charge $10 for tasting initially, but with the tasting you get to keep the wine glass from that vineyard. With that glass you can get tastings at the other vineyard's for $5. I believe that if you bring your own glass from home you can get a tasting for $8, but I'm not sure if that works everywhere. Anyway this is a great way for all of the vineyards to get some love. You won't see large tour buses of folks coming to these parts looking for free wine tastings. That is a good thing. For our $10 apiece we had 6 tastings each. You get to choose which wines you want. I believe they had around 14 different types they were pouring from so between the two of us we had just about everything they had on this day. The tasting area was a bit of a chore to get to as it seemed like a good portion of people were crowding around that area even if they weren't tasting. It was quite annoying. Sue and I found a table out front as the weather was perfect and we would both rather be outside than crammed into a tasting area with people who refused to move. My husband and I both did the regular tasting menu rather than the reserve tasting, so we were able to sample five red wines. All were fine, but not superb. The tasting room was chilly, but a space heater was quickly brought to our table to keep us warm. Since it was too chilly to sit outside, some music indoors would have been appreciated. Friendly owners; great wine. The tasting room was pretty crowded on a Saturday afternoon (more so than Kief-Joshua, Wilhelm, and Charron). The pourers were good about describing each wine while keeping the line moving. As others have noted (and as is common with wine tastings in general), bring a glass with you to save some money. Really enjoyed the outside patio -- there was a row of Adirondack chairs set up over-looking the grapes as well as some patio furniture right outside the tasting room doors. This has to be the best known wine place in the sonoita/elgin area. it shows because the place is hugeee and come onnnn they have sooo many wines and 99% of them have won an award or have some medal. They are recognize throughout the state and everyone we spoke to think highly of the callaghan family. Ive been to many tastings in many vineyards but have never seen such variety and so many option to. Choose from. 20 wines to choose from ranging from whites to reds to dessert wines. I tried 5 and my lady tried 5 different ones and they were all exceptional. The place has many souvenirs and merch to buy and the seating are outside is phenomenal. This was the second stop in our winery tour and ended up being a very pleasant experience. They allowed each person to pick 5 wines from their menu to try. I liked this set up because we could all pick different ones according to our preferences. They also had an off-the-menu dessert wine that I could use as one of my choices. My favorite was the Ann's 2014, light, crisp and floral. The ambience was amazing. We sat outside on these oversized red chairs that looked out over the landscape. We ended up staying a while longer than we intended because of this fantastic, peaceful view. The winery's dog, Kiva was also a great addition. I'm always down for some puppy therapy :) Also the t-shirts that they were selling were pretty hilarious. I was entertained. Overall great wine and relaxing atmosphere! read more

If you go to one winery in Sonoita, go to Callaghan! Why? Their wines have been served at the White House. Three times. It's that good. Wine tasting in Sonoita is always really fun, but the wines can be hit-or-miss. However, every wine at Callaghan is fantastic. This place is especially good for lovers of red. Kent (Callaghan) is always on hand during tastings...he'll be the quiet, unassuming guy playing with his dog or maybe pouring wines. Tastings are $10, which is on the higher end for Sonoita. But it's worth it. You'll get to taste at least five or six varieties, and sometimes they'll knock a couple bucks off if you bring your own glass. Don't miss this place.
