Found this little gem of a park passing through town. As others noted, clean and well taken care of. Our girl loved it. Thanks Waukegan!

The overall park was a nice size, mostly lawn and the pond. There was a picnic table under a covered roof and a bench facing the pond. This is a great park for dogs that love to run and swim! There is also a second space for small dogs. The swimming pond is located in the large dog area. Double entry gates are present for both play spaces. I didn't explore the other areas of the park but it appeared to have a children's play area as well as other outdoor spaces.

They correct their dogs (unlike other parks) but there's not much need of that here. Most of the dogs are so well behaved and they all just have a blast together. There's a cool bone shaped pond in the middle of the bigger dog area for the pups to romp in and cool down in on hot days. It's bottom is sand, not mud so they don't get too dirty. They have a smaller area for smaller dogs. My Gretel is wee but she doesn't stay in the small area if me and our big baby puppy, Hanso, are in the big area. So she just comes with abs rules over the park. Just ask anyone about Gretel and that's what they say, not me. Lol There are picnic tables and benches to sit on for our old tired bones. Kids are welcome and there's a playground outside the dog section. Right by a yet BIGGER pond with a walking path around it. Many dog folks walk their dogs around that one as well. They even provide poop bags at both dog park areas to clean up after your fur children. Everyone is welcome as long as their dogs aren't "vicious" like Gretel the Vocal Queen. See ya here!

At the top, you have a wide open grassy area, which would ideally be perfect for letting your dog off-leash... if they were to fence it. Descending the stairs to the beach, you reach a fenced-in area for dogs to enjoy the lake. It's pretty chilly on blustery days, but the dogs love it, and it's a great place to meet other pet owners. You do need a permit to be there, however, and the details about that are posted on the website.

But the fidos have liberty and space to romp around and play all over the joint. If your dog is aggressive or violent you shouldn't take him or her or if you do leave it leashed. Duh. My dog isn't aggressive really but acts like a spaz. He'a also the size of a hamster so I always leave him leashed because I'm not a stupid head. Make sure you clean up after your furry friends. Ray Bradbury Park is located in a residential area, so it's isolated from tourists. A lot of people don't know where it is either. That helps keep them away and you can enjoy it better without crowds and stuff. As for the park itself, it's actually not that big. It has an entrance off a side street, close to a few houses. There's a marker noting history of the Waukegan River and the ravine that was mentioned in Bradbury's Dandelion Wine and Farewell Summer. Cool for book nerds. For sure it's cool for anyone obviously. Bradbury was even at the park dedication and met a few excited authors and fans. The marker has photos and information. Has no parking lot because this is a residential area. It's usually not busy so street parking is pretty much okay. There's not a whole lot of people who know where this is, so it doesn't get lots of tourists.

Several of his novels are semi-autobiographical. In stories such as Dandelion Wine and Farewell Summer he reinvented Waukegan as Green Town. He wrote about a park, drawn from childhood memories, in Dandelion Wine. In 1990 the park, located a few blocks from his boyhood home, was rededicated as Ray Bradbury Park. Bradbury himself, was on hand to do the ribbon cutting. The park is not large, but it has a neat stairway that drops down into a deep ravine. It is easy to imagine Bradbury as a child, exploring this magical place. It obviously left a lasting impression on the great writer. Go pick up a copy of Dandelion Wine, wait for a nice sunny day and let Mr. Bradbury take you on an adventure as you explore his park. You never know what you may discover!
