I am not exaggerating when I say that Anthony changed my relationship with my dog and my dog's relationship with the world. For context, I have a 2 year old anxious labradoodle named Gus. When he was approached by new people he would aggressively bark and growl. I had worked with another dog trainer for over a year -- his problems just became worse. I became reluctant to do things with Gus because I was fearful he would growl/bark/act inappropriately when meeting new people. I was at my wits end and I consulted with a well respected training program here in NYC that said he was a "moderate to severe case" and would need multiple weeks of boarding training + years of follow up training to address his issues. Anthony solved Gus's problems in 1 session. Yes, 1 session... Within seconds of meeting him, Anthony just "got" Gus. His advice and feedback was completely different from the feedback I got from the other trainers and Gus responded immediately. I'm starting my 5th week of owning Benny, whom I adopted from Love of All Dogs Rescue. He's a 'sato' (mixed breed) from Puerto Rico who was skittish, a lousy walker, hyper for other dogs since he was born in a cave & then fostered in the suburbs in a house with two other dogs who basically just went potty in the backyard. I spent 1.5 hours in the pouring rain w Anthony as we walked Benny into the field, where he was off-leash and learning how to follow, and also enjoying his time socializing with dogs. Anthony impressed upon me how important social play is for dogs to PURGE THE ENERGY out. Not going to lie, i LOVE to walk with dogs, and sitting around while THEY play was not my thing. LOL. WORLD OF A DIFFERENCE it has made. Benny is a great walker now (not pulling 90% of the time). He knows how to act when other dogs walk by us as he is rewarded to meet them after behaving! He's doing so well. Still a little touchy on the running toddlers and guarding, but I am confident we'll get there thanks for Anthony's guidance! I attended a group Zoom on leash walking --which sounds like it shouldn't work for lots of reasons (e.g., there's no dogs, and no walking), and also like it might not be worth $50, given the internet's limitless (free) resources on the subject. But I'm writing this review because I asked myself 48 hours later whether or not it was worth the $50, and it's a total no-brainer. For context, I've worked with a few trainers in the past (for my other, small dog), and do regularly consume said free resources, so I was a little skeptical, in addition to hopeful, that I could get some additional help on troubleshooting my new (large) dog's leash reactivity. Anthony clearly has a lot of experience, and said some things that, when applied, clicked in a way Google just didn't. Our walks have felt so much nicer the last two days. Outdated training techniques unsupported by the AVSAB (American veterinary society of animal behavior), and most importantly there is a lack of compassion for the dog's feelings. He basically teaches your dog to "submit" or for you to jerk your dog around on a leash by their collar which is unsafe for them especially small dogs. If you want an obedient dog, you work with them on trust not having them shut down completely. Agree with the other negative reviews here that your dog can probably get worse. I recommend looking into free resources like zak George, kiko pup to learn about the VET BEHAVIOR approved methods of management and positive reinforcement to train a fearful or reactive dog. read more

It has been a few months since we had a 2 hour session with Anthony for our puppy Dalí Madison, and it has made a huge difference in our lives. Before we met with Anthony, Dalí was very hyper and would bark and lunge at men she didn't know when I walked her. Anthony encouraged us to get her out more and trust her off leash in the mornings (before we saw her with him we wouldn't have dreamed of letting her loose). He taught us some simple behavior cues and a better method for walking her so she would stop pulling. Now Dalí is much calmer and happier. Thank you for Anthony for his one on one training with my two dogs. I had just moved into the area and we were having difficulties with barking but most especially my older american eskimo couldn't socialize with other dogs. Other trainers came in and tried to feed them treats to stop the barking and said they needed a lot of work. Anthony met me outside, walked them, evaluated their behavior and both of them were able to go into the dog run after a while and socialized with other dogs. My boyfriend and I adopted Jasper, a Pitoodle (Pit Bull / Poodle Mix) on Valentine's Day. Though cute, cuddly, and an amazing dog, he was displaying a host of behaviors that weren't at all pleasant for us or healthy for him (urinating/defecating on rugs, chewing the baseboards, jumping up on counter tops and on guests, ripping up blankets, etc.). A friend recommended we check out CHEEKY DOG in Brooklyn for help, and we saw on the website that Calm Energy Dog Training oversees their weekend training classes. We immediately scheduled a one-on-one meeting with Anthony, and are incredibly happy we did! Anthony, simply put, is a totally chill dog-whisperer. Within one minute of interacting with Jasper, his behavior immediately began to change. We learned a great deal from Anthony about how to communicate with Jasper through our body language, vocal tone, volume, and eye contact. So much of what we *thought* were good ways of ensuring good behavior were actually not the best means of guaranteeing good, consistent results (food/treats as a primary motivator, crate as punishment, etc.). Our one-on-one session lasted two hours, and during that time Anthony shared all sorts of techniques, tips, and tricks for how to interact with Jasper to ensure good behavior. We followed through, consistently, followed his advice (including changing up his walking schedule to burn off some of his energy)... and all those bad things that were stressing us out stopped happening within three days! I brought our rescue chi-mix to see Anthony for a private session at Prospect Park. I was convinced we would need several sessions to help our puppy to stop pulling on walks and eating every crumb on the street. After just one 1.5 hour session - I'm amazed at how Anthony was able to train our puppy (and me!) on walking with significantly less pulling and absolutely no eating off the ground. In addition, spending time with Anthony gave both our puppy and me a tremendous amount of knowledge on how to be better together in a wide variety of environments - better at home, better off-leash and ways to just have a better overall experience together in any setting. I cannot more enthusiastically endorse Anthony's services if you are struggling with a dog that has any of the same problems that our puppy had: pulling hard while on leash, eating off the floor, at war with all squirrels and pigeons, barking at everything that walks by and so on. read more

My baby Gilbert was a rescue. He was found on the street in Brooklyn. When we adopted him we showered him with love and affection. As he settled in we cut back on the attention we showed him because his confidence was growing and he didn't seem to need it. Gilbert started displaying signs of anxiety. When I think of dog whisperers, I think that's great for them, but what about the rest of us who don't have the mastery or magic? After a single session with Anthony, I felt like he'd given my husband and me some of his magic. For one thing, it transformed our walks with our nervous papillon, Mu. Watching Anthony lead Mu through the streets, I was sure he was just making it look easy, that when it was my turn we'd be back to the freezing and dragging and refusing to go places that Mu had been doing since we got him as a nearly-two-year-old a couple months before. But Anthony's suggestions worked the first time I tried them, and ever since. What a pleasure, to witness our dog happy-tailing it along Avenue C like he belongs in New York City (he's from Maryland). It wasn't only the walking. Clearly, Anthony understands as well as a human can how dogs--in general, and ours in particular--experience the world. He's also very good at translating. (Clearly, he has a knack for humans, too.) I held my breath as Anthony walked my 5 year old leash aggressive pit bull up to completely strange dogs on the street after years of us ducking behind cars to avoid them. I waited for the inevitable lunge and freak out.... and it didn't happen. In fact, I was near tears, mouth open in amazement as he calmly greeted the dog, sniffed it and moved on. The change in my dog was instantaneous because of a huge talent that Anthony has. Simply seeing how my dog is capable of acting, and seeing how Anthony does it was worth everything. I realized that my dog is normal, albeit under socialized and that it's up to me to fix it. A important discovery after years of feeling like an irresponsible dog owner with an aggressive dog, despite my best efforts to keep him under control. I keep having to remind myself that it's not a magic pill. What a stroke of luck that I found Anthony & Calm Energy Dog Training when I did. My pup, Tucker, just joined me in Brooklyn after almost two years of living with my parents in Oklahoma. I was very worried about Tucker's transition, as we had lived in San Diego prior to my move here and his time in California, and wanted to help him feel comfortable in a new place with so many new sounds and smells. Part of Tucker's acclimation to a new home brought out some territorial aggression toward people entering my home, or strangers while out walking. We first met Anthony through one of his off-leash pack walks in Prospect Park. We'd just gotten our rescue pup, Chutley, a month before and wanted to address some of his issues (walking poorly on a leash, reactive towards other dogs). The walk was excellent. Within minutes of meeting Chutley, Anthony showed us how to correct our dog's constant yappiness and do a calm introduction using a loose leash approach. By the end of the walk and off-leash experience, Chutley was walking correctly (no more zig zagging and bone eating!) and was much more social with other dogs. He taught us exactly how to communicate to Chutley exactly what we wanted to do and the progress has been great so far. He's not 100% every time he passes another dog, but we're still working on that part. :) Since we were so pleased with the workshop, we decided to bring Anthony into our home for a private session to address Chutley's separation anxiety. He had been barking and howling incessantly for hours on end when left alone and we were desperate to resolve the problem after our other attempts had failed. Anthony spent two hours with us, made recommendations for helping Chutley be more comfortable in his environment, provided a "goodbye ritual" to help the leaving process be a calm experience for Chutley, etc. He leaves you a guide to follow so that you'll be successful when he leaves, and was great about coaching us via email with any questions we had about the process. Now, he told us it wouldn't be easy and he wasn't lying. We did everything he told us to. Early morning off-leash DAILY, lots of exercise, a short-term financial investment in day care and in-home walkers, etc. We had to do a period of daily doggy day care (constant supervision) and then slowly began to increase his tolerance for being alone though separation techniques that he provided. Eventually we moved from day care to having an in home sitter that would help us continue the training while we were at work. It was a full month of excessive training, and a serious lack of social life. Buuuuut - we recently reached the point where our dog can now be left alone for up to 5 hours with just a few barks during that time period. Our neighbors don't hate us anymore (just kidding, they were SUPER patient)! We didn't work up to more than 5 hours because he'll never be alone for more than that now that we've added a midday walk - which is great for both maintaining our potty training success and a bit of exercise to wear him out again for the second half of the day. Like other posters, and even Anthony himself, have mentioned - it's important to have a good fit with a trainer as far as personality and style. We were lucky to find a good fit. Anthony provided a great balance of positive reinforcement and small, gentle corrections we can use to show our pup he isn't doing what he's supposed to. We aren't out of the woods yet completely, and expect we'll be reinforcing his training for at least another 6 months before it's fully engrained into our dog's way of life. Bottom Line: Anthony will give you the (excellent) tools you need to train your dog. It's up to you to follow his instructions when he leaves. read more

Soon after my boyfriend and I adopted our pit bull mix Abbey, we decided to schedule a private session with Anthony because although we had read a lot about dog training, there was so much conflicting information we didn't know where to start. Anthony suggested methods to deal with Abbey's particular issues (pulling on her leash, biting), as well as an array of general obedience exercises to practice with her. After two hours with Anthony, we were left with a whole toolbox of doggie correction techniques and discipline-enhancing routines as well as exercise and socialization recommendations. We first met Anthony at a group walking session in Central Park. We have 2 yorkshire terriers who are well....typical yorkies. A bit yappy, one of them is rather leash aggresive and well just aggressive to random people in general, he has some anxiety issues. At the session we learned a lot and realized we were doing a lot wrong! He has an amazing ability with dogs, one of the pups there (not ours) was crazy and as soon as he worked with her for a few minutes she chilled and was responsibe to training. Further proof in my mind that it's primarily owner training :) He did a great job with all of the dogs at the training and we were impressed with him. We applied his techniques and saw marked improvement in our walks with our dogs. The aggressive one still needed some further work so Anthony came to our apartment for a 2 hour session, we did some work at home and then for a walk, he had him walking up to other dogs with no issues, children, etc. I was shocked. We did doorbell work, and learned how to appropriately handle that and they did quite good. I see that other people disagree with his methods regarding the martingale collar (which is not a choke collar, it has a stop to go only as tight as the neck - where as a choke collar does exactly as it says, it continues to go smaller the more its pulled) for us it was the only thing that reeled our dog in and did not damage our relationship at all. They are still rather crazy animals, but we are continuing to work with them with what we learned from Anthony and they are showing improvement, dog training is obviously a long rode but Anthony showed us what our dogs are capable of and what to strive for I would definitely call Anthony again for assistance and recommend him out. read more

Our pup, Lupa, was a huge challenge. She was showing intense fearful aggression - biting us, our friends and guests. She was so scared and didn't know what to do with that fear. Anthony has worked with our 2 little toy fox terries a handful of times now and has proven to be the only trainer who has helped to make actual, serious progress. We've worked with him on preventing barking prompted by foreign sounds, aggression towards strangers and visitors, and our younger dog's seemingly uncorrectable leash aggression. Since the day she came home, she would bark relentlessly at other dogs and nip at them if we let her get close enough - Anthony was able to change that entirely during our most recent session. Since then we've been able to take both dogs to the dog park daily - sometimes multiple times a day - and have had zero problems. She has been meeting dogs on the street without making a peep. Both pups are happier and better behaved, and it has been such a relief on us. His tips are simple and straightforward, very clear, and incredibly effective. I brought my dog Ringo along to our first ever training session today - The Calm Energy Recipe - and I can't believe the results I have seen from one session. Anthony showed us how to walk on leash so that your dog is following rather than leading, he showed me how to correct leash aggressive moments so that I can now introduce my dog to others on the street (I could never do that before) and best of all he showed me some of my errors during off-leash times and now I feel a lot more control in that setting. We used Anthony just for a day to work on my dog who had separation anxiety, jumping on everyone that comes over, and basically getting his way, no matter what, and the occasional accident here or there. Since seeing Anthony, Papa is doing VERY well. No separation anxiety, no crying, no peeing in the house anymore (so far). He started tugging a bit when we were walking, but I remembered to put my leg out in front him and show him "who's boss"... it clicked and he is back to good. We run/walk at the park for 1 1/2 hrs daily. Then after work we walk some more for about 3 miles (if it's not raining). In the mornings he is off leash so he exercises and he socializes at the same time. It's really fun, although he's not the best running companion; he is way behind and stalls too much. But, it's better than nothing, and he comes to me when I call him. Since we've had a lot of rain recently and rain is his worst nightmare, I did what you told me to do and just "made him" go. And, it worked! So he is better at it now. He knows that as soon as he "goes", we can go back inside. So, that's been a big improvement for him. It doesn't even seem like rain bothers him anymore. He walks like normal. Head up, tail up, and adorable as ever. He doesn't cry EVER when I tie him outside a shop or something for a few minutes for coffee or an errand. This is 100% new to us. This was the hardest thing to change about him. I am so happy about this. I feel so good when I see him just sitting there waiting for me while I shop for a quick something. He still sits on everyone when they come over.But, he's much better at getting down when you say, "down". He isn't jumping on them and barking with excitement when people come over. He is much calmer. So, overall, we have a much calmer and well behaved dog. HUGE difference from before. It's amazing!! read more

I had one trainer actually sit behind a baby gate in my home for 5 sessions as we fed my dog hotdogs to try and get him used to having a stranger in my home. It all ended the same- us desperate for some real help that would enable us to keep our dog. While it's not easy to remember all of the great things he teaches you- when he does it and if you practice it and do it, it works. I called Anthony in a panic. I was watching my partner's tiny dog and the temperature dropped so I got her a sweater. Suddenly she wouldn't walk. She started barking at everyone - hearing them in the hallway of my apt! Stress! I've never had a dog so I wasn't sure what the proper things were to get control of this tiny dog. Anthony facetimed me that night - phew. He's gentle yet assertive. He knows dogs and he knows the relationship between the person and the dog is essential. We leashed up Daff and walked around the apartment. He taught me some commands. We ventured outside. Somehow I didn't fall down or run into something doing all this on facetime but 45 minutes later, everything was better. I learned a few more things and all has been well since. I thought long and hard before leaving this review. I felt it was important to do this with a clear head, but also important that others make an informed decision. It's been about a month since Anthony came to my home to train my 1 year old Shorkie, whose main issue was recall (coming to me when I say "come."). I'm sure he's a great trainer for challenged dogs, but my dog wasn't a challenge. The bottom line was our philosophies and priorities were not aligned. I did learn some important things (like keeping a bed in my living room for him to be comfy and relaxed while I'm relaxed) but by and large I regret the appointment. His methods left a bad taste in my mouth and I found him personally at times to be condescending (although to his credit, he tried not to be) and patronizing. My poor dog was so frightened he would have done anything to save himself from this strange man who pulled him back and forth by his leash then quickly picked him up to stroke him (he called it bonding); I was horrified, and he told me I won't find his methods so cruel (his word, not mine) when my dog gets loose on the BQE and I need to get him to come to me. He advised me to let my dog investigate the people who come to my door to relieve his barking; when I expressed concern about people who may be afraid of dogs, he told me my responsibility was to my dog (true), not to whomever comes to my door (not true). I really tried to follow his lead but I could see my little guy was scared and confused. I was also confused; it just felt wrong. I'm sorry, but I don't see how frightening a dog is an effective means of training. Also, the first advice he gave me was to stop picking him up (I told him it was in the interest of time), yet he picked my dog up several times and explained it was to save time. Hmmm... Perhaps I should have stopped the session, but I was still hopeful and wanted to keep an open mind. He must have had an engagement following my training session because he kept checking his phone which I found a little rude. The walk was the shortest part of the lesson, mostly because my dog was a good walker, partly because he spent most of the time forcing him with his foot to walk over subway grates (he's frightened of them and it was not an area I wanted addressed, but I didn't want to be difficult so I went along). Now my dog acts frightened of me and is a fearful walker. I won't go so far as to say it's all Anthony's training, but certainly it was a contributing factor. Since the session, walking my dog has become stressful for the both of us. If I had it to do again I would not have hired him. All of the great reviews he got here prompted me to hire him, but I wish a review like this one would have been tucked in here somewhere. I did not feel like my concerns were addressed and I did not feel like a partner in my dog's training. It was like going to a doctor who doesn't want to be questioned because he's the doctor. Anthony is very impressive. About two years ago our 7 year very high energy border collie / lab / greyhound mix began to be very aggressive with about 50% of the other dogs he met at the park. It got worse and worse no matter what we tried. Finally we found Anthony. In one 3 hour session last weekend he was able to easily identify the issue and show us how to correct the behavior. We have really been very consistent with our dog's training, and I was amazed at what I learned about him in the short time with Anthony. Since then we have been to the park with him 4 times and, with the techniques Anthony taught us, he has not attacked a single dog! In fact he has been sniffing butts and playing like his old self! Anthony even taught us how to get him to walk better on the leash and how to keep him from fuzzing up our rug. He also has been very responsive over email, recommending playgroups and different collar / leash systems that would help. I cannot recommend him highly enough. read more

Anthony did WONDERS for our dog! She was terrified to go more than a block from our house before we signed on with Calm Energy. After a single two-hour one-on-one session with Anthony, we've been able to take her on longer walks and to the dog park with very little difficulty. He really is the Dog Whisperer! We're 3.5 months out from one 2-hour personal session with Anthony and couldn't be more pleased. The short version: Che's the kind of dog that is super happy, hard to corral mostly because she just doesn't care too much about being told "no." Immediately, Che's reaction to correction from Anthony was totally different, and that was a lightbulb moment for us. Anthony's "no" was sharp, accompanied by a step towards Che, and followed by a redirection towards a positive behavior that gave the pup a chance to succeed immediately after. Che's reaction was totally different than her nonchalance about my corrections. He got her attention in a way that I had only achieved a couple of times in her 14 months with us. More importantly, Anthony was able to very clearly articulate what it was about his corrections that I could repeat in order to prompt the same type of behavior from the pup. With a couple days, then a week, and now three months of practice, I'm getting much better and Che has learned what makes me happy, as well as what prompts this kind of sharp correction. The long story: Che is a pit mix, and at about 14 months, things started going the wrong direction. Overzealous play became aggression at off-leash, which led to our own anxiety about bringing her to the park, which transitioned to Che going to the park less. With less exercise, she became aggressive on-leash, and this whole cycle culminated in getting a hold of another dog outside of our watch and tearing its ear. Anthony assisted us in turning that negative cycle completely around. He provided us the tools (as well as the confidence) that Che could get in and out of a dog-run without incident, and so we were able to do that once or twice a day. That socialization and energy expenditure meant better walking and on-leash training. Better walking meant more pleasant and thus more frequent walks around the neighborhood, and that finally results in much happier dogs and owners, most importantly. It's easy to be overwhelmed by the many competing ideologies of dog training. In our case, we needed to see what two hours of success looked like for Che. The things Anthony did stuck with us as one proven formula. Once we doubled-down our commitment and followed through on regular dog-park trips/walks and combined it with 1) our memory of the session, 2) the documents and information Anthony left behind, and 3) a couple e-mail threads of personal advice, we can now reap the benefits of a well-trained pup. She's not perfect, but it's a whole different place from where we were (and the direction we were heading). Thank you to Anthony for helping us turn things around with Che! read more

We are a local NYC animal shelter, and we were put in touch with Anthony via Susie's Senior Dogs so that we could get some confidence training for a senior beagle mix in our care named Ethel. She is about 7 years old and was petrified of most things and went unadopted for months. Anthony's consultation and training worked WONDERS, Ethel's behavior and confidence level quickly began to improve once her foster mom started using Anthony's suggestions, and Ethel was adopted shortly after the initial training session! My golden retriever puppy of 1 year is very sweet but had issues with overexcitement, disobeying simple commands, and leash pulling. Despite her behavior being normal for a puppy, it was creating issues when she encountered new situations and feelings of frustration for me when trying to correct her just didn't work. In just one session, Anthony provided me with tons of valuable information and showed me how to communicate with my dog effectively. Besides showing me how to train her, Anthony was excellent at reading my dog's personality and seeing what lifestyle changes were necessary to suit her needs. He gave me great recommendations for equipment and local walkers as well. I can already see a huge difference, with Mila being much calmer and very well behaved on our walks.
