We are walked passed a headstone that had fallen over onto another and never put back upright. I have been visiting this cemetery since I was a little girl and the quality of how it is being kept up over the years has severely decreased. Update- I spoke with someone that works at the cemetery and they are experiencing the same issues as everyone else basically. They need help but can't find it. I respect the honesty and the person was extremely nice and apologetic. Therefore, I changed my review to 4 stars. Great customer service and answering questions goes a long way in my book.

We had initially learned about this group after seeing the documentary Facing East (2019), which details the very sad state of affairs at this cemetery. We were touched by the amount of committed volunteers who show up here and stories of what brought them to this place. We were also inspired due to the large amount of neglected veterans graves and felt this would be a way to honor those who served. From the spring season through autumn, volunteers typically descend on the property on most Sundays 10 AM to 1 PM to mow, weed eat, pick up brush and debris, trim trees, and clean headstones. The grounds for Eastern Cemetery was purchased by two Methodist Episcopal churches and used for burials as early as 1844. The facility hosted Louisville's first crematoriums. Unfortunately, in 1989, a whistleblower called attention to the fact that some graves purchased by families had been reused. As such, the cemetery has fallen into repair. Maintenance of the facility is currently provided by veterans and volunteer groups. Even with that, the cemetery is worth a visit. Much of the grass needs trimming, the concrete paths need a repaving and some of the brush needs cutting back. But definitely stop by. [Review 13490 overall, 809 of 2020.] [YELP! Since it had been several months since my last walk at CHC, I was also curious to see the stonemason progress on the front gate repairs. Following someone's car accident many months ago, major damage had occurred to the stone and the large iron gates and it will supposedly take months to fix. The demo has been completed for the most part and some of the stone was able to be saved. Hoping the project will be done this year or in 2027. We also checked out the new mausoleum built into the hillside along the main road. It is lovely and has a beautiful stained glass window on one side depicting a large tree. Plants, trees, and animals (chipmunks, squirrels, geese, ducks) were all interesting distractions on today's walk. Looking forward to future visits.

She was a beautiful alert lady who lived to be 101. When her family told us about the arrangements for her service we were surprised to hear they were going to have a "drive-by" service. We had no idea what to expect as were drove in the parking lot and saw a short line off cars going past the front of the building with the family all standing outside. As we approached the family greeted us, all wearing masks and social distancing. They opened two large glass doors for us to get a clear view of the open casket. We exchanged words with the family and then drove off. It was clearly one of the most unusual services we've ever attended and certainly not like any previous ones we've attended.

We decided against burying her in our backyard because we didn't want any wild animals to dig her up (my heart, soul, or psyche would not have been able to survive that). We called a few places around town to get prices of pet cremation and any other associated services. The man who answered the phone was kind, understanding and soothingly efficient. His already soothing voice became much more empathetic when he found out that I had just lost my pet. He gave me their prices and explained exactly what those cost included. They have different prices based upon how you want the cremation to occur and then upon the weight of the animal. They offer 3 levels of cremation: individual, double and group. Plus, depending upon the level you choose, their prices include a framable certificate, a marvelous, decorative, wooden box for ash storage and memorial display. The individual and double cremation options offer the certificate of authenticity, which states that the ashes that you received are actually from YOUR pet and not from someone else's. In addition, at no extra charge they will ink the paws and nose to put those prints on the certificate. I was completely satisfied with the tentative services and the expected outcome. Once we took my pet to their location, one man received her while another man (Chris) took our information. Although, the man that I talked to earlier on the phone took my information and noted that I wanted the nose and paw prints, Chris did not ask about that service nor did I remember to state it. In my grief-stricken, cloudy mind, I assumed that the information from the earlier phone call would be linked to this intake information. I didn't realize that little omission would return to haunt me. A few days passed and they called to say that my pet was ready for pickup. Quite somberly, I was actually able to drive to get her (I wasn't sure I would be able to do that). A lady greeted me immediately, and ushered me to follow her to the office. There I received a nicely paw-printed recyclable paper bag with a beautiful wooden box and a certificate of authenticity inside the bag. The presentation was really nice. Imagine my hurt when I looked at the certificate and saw no nose or paw prints. When I asked about the omission, the lady told me that she would check to see what happened. After a few minutes, she returned to tell me that they were unable to get any prints from my pet. Her body language was different as she told me this information and I got the impression that she was not telling me the truth. Especially because I know the position that my dog's legs and face were in. Her paws were straight and flat and her nose was big and black. The only way that they couldn't get the ink was if they didn't know to try. While I realize and accept that this was a miscommunication, I would rather have been told the candid truth and not a "canned response" to appease a grieving person. Other than this, I was really pleased with everything else.
