In the 1950's there was only one Catholic church in the entire south Broward area. St. Stephen's was created when 250 people from the Hollywood and Miramar areas came together to worship in a humble space created out of wood crates and cement blocks on September 6, 1953. A need for Catholic services was filled and by 1954 a church building was completed. The building was enlarged as more people attended the church and on August 12, 1956, Fr. Robert Schleffen was commissioned to become the first Pastor of St. Stephen the Protomartyr Church. In 1991 the church was refurbished to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The Creation stained glass windows were commissioned from renowned artist, Sister Diane Couture, SSJ. Today the church body is made up mainly of Hispanics and African Caribbean Islanders who worship under the motto "ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM" The church is a multi-ethnic and multi-language Catholic community. The church offers a daily weekday and weekend mass with a schedule provided on the church website. I love learning about the history of different churches in the community and St. Stephen has a long legacy of helping those who are hungry with the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. Despite it all, a lady named Vicky was attentive to our needs and she showed compassion. If only everyone that we dealt with was more like her.

Do people really believe that it costs nothing to run a display like this so that literally hundreds of people can enjoy it every year?! I found this group around late January/February-ish of this year when I was looking to reconnect with a church after a long hiatus (that's another story best told over an adult beverage or ice cream tower). I sortof ended up inviting myself to one of their scheduled events and felt an immediate connection with Pastor Terrence and Pastor Emma. They're just really welcoming and genuine people which literally permeates from them naturally. Fast forward from my self-invite evolving into becoming part of the launch team. Like they say about relationships, 'when you know, you know'. Pre-Covid we gathered at team nights and family dinners. During the height of Covid we continued to virtually gather via Zoom and most recently have been gathering in groups; DGHTRS, SØNS and the Marriage (couples) course. It's been such a pleasure getting to know and spend time with this wonderfully diverse group of people, some of which have become very close friends in the process. I think it's important to surround yourself with positive influences whether it's HIStory Makers or any other faith based group, depending on your denomination of preference = my .02. I suppose this would be formally classified as 'nondenominational' if it needed a title *which kindof makes it a denomination (no??) but I digress. We're all on a road to find our purpose in life, to become the best versions of ourselves, to support others and be supported through our ups and downs and to find true joy/fulfillment. This is truly a group where FRNDS become FMLY while navigating that journey together. We weren't made to do this life by ourselves. Come as you are.
