I am torn by this little neighborhood fruit and vegetable market as I want to support it, yet most…read moreof the time the prices are a bit high and the quality does not warrant paying the extra cash. Even in the summertime when veggies are more plentiful the prices here remain rather pricey, but you can definitely tell the difference in a homegrown tomato and a store bought one. Even when the watermelons were overflowing they too were prime priced which made no sense to me. Even friends said they had to pass them up for the cheaper Walmart watermelons. With all of the roadway improvements of SR 200 A1A and the retail expansion of Nassau County/Yulee-Fernandina Beach, I would expect that this little piece of property might go for a pretty plenty for some sort of banking institution or other business. I would definitely stop here more often but with the Aldi opening down the street and the produce and fruits there being so much less, it makes no sense to pay more. I do not eat boiled peanuts but I was told by a friend that they are also more expensive on that item as well. 3 stars for being a cute little farm stand in the middle of an outburst of growth in a community. They also have some cool cats that hang on the property which are friendly and welcome to the occasional scratching and cat hair sharing.

I am SO excited about the discovery of this tiny gem in Macclenny! I kept hearing how great this…read morestore was and I finally went this week to check it out. I have to say, all the talk about Hodges Produce is legit. This is a really tiny store, but don't let the size fool you. It's packed full of a variety of local fruits and vegetables. The outside was lined with three types of watermelons (my favorite), so I was already off to a good start. The minute I walked in, I was blasted by the smell of fresh Georgia peaches!! If you can smell the peaches without them being right up your nose, you know they're good. They had one fridge with cherries, grapes, rambutan, blueberries, milk/chocolate milk and eggs. The blueberries were a steal! $5.99 for an 18 oz tub? Yes please. They were large, sweet and my son had a good time eating them. A definite win. The other fridge had huge carrots, Brussel sprouts, broccoli and huge bags of all different kinds of peas/beans. Some of the other produce they had were beautiful large tomatoes, three kinds of sweet potatoes/yams, a few different types of potatoes, cucumbers, corn, bananas, tiny eggplants that made you say "aw," onions, kiwis, three types of plums I'd never heard of, raw peanuts, and apples. One of the great things about this place is you can buy in bulk. You can get bushels and crates of produce. If there's a certain item you're looking for, they'll keep an eye out and let you know when it comes in. The customer service was just amazing. The woman running the register told us all about the different fruits and where they came from. She talked about how to make boiled peanuts, which are disgusting to me, but I enjoyed hearing about the process. We talked about how to pick watermelons and she even said if we got a bad watermelon she'd take it back and replace it. Between the quality of produce, the prices and customer service, it's exactly what you'd expect from a small family owned business. I absolutely love this place! Oh and the peaches....were out of this world!!!
