It was surreal to ride out and soak up every moment of this vast land! Abby is welcoming, patient and a professional equestrian who values safety first. We appreciated all the photographs she took of us on the trail and she gave us insight about the local culture and history. We could not have asked for a better trail guide/wrangler. Also as a "horse person" I deeply appreciated how healthy and happy these horses are. They are well cared for that is for sure. We learned that many horses stay here for years, are not over worked and retire with dignity. I highly recommend the two hour ride, it was a deeply meaningful experience!

Piper was very personable and kept up steady conversation. The horses are well mannered, all with their own little quirks. It was nice that our wrangler knows the individual horses well enough to give us a heads up. For example, at the end of the ride there's a wide short bush that the horse I had insists on walking through. It wasn't dangerous, and it's just his preference and gives him a little joy, he scratches his belly on it. Piper knew the horses well enough she gave me a heads up so I wasn't surprised. The South Unit Visitor Center is located as soon as you drive through the entrance on the left. We…read morewere provided with a map when we drove in, although if you are not provided one at this time, you can get one inside the visitor center. There are volunteers that are helpful and can answer any questions you have about the park. There are signs outside that share more about Theodore Roosevelt. There is a 36 mile loop that you can drive around and take in the scenic landscape views and views of the wildlife. There are trails you can take in addition if you are feeling more adventurous. The visitor center has plenty of parking, bathrooms are in good condition, and it has a water station near the restroom so you can fill up your refillable water bottle if you are running low on water.

The south unit is the largest of the three park sections in the mountain time zone. The Scenic Loop, Drive is 36 miles around although miles of the road are closed,so we could not loop we had to backtrack. The visitor center has information, a theater and a museum with natural history displays and some of Theodore Roosevelt personal items. In this section of the park is a dude ranch from the 1920s that was the headquarters of the WPA. Previously there were guided horseback rides from here. There is a wilderness section of the south unit and a petrified forest. These sections of the park cannot be reached by paved roads. The gravel dirt roads are difficult for vehicle vehicles.

Even though we went through the bottom portion, we were able to see some horses and look out at the beautiful views. We were able to get junior ranger books and badges. I even got to get a magnet from the little shop at the painted canyon visitor center. It was much hotter than we thought it would be, so we were not able to do any hikes during our visit in July. But even just driving through the land was beautiful.

No over-crowding, decent rustic camping, lots of wildlife & plenty of space to roam. South Unit loop has a lot of construction going right now, which makes it an out & back va a loop. We spotted plenty of bison, horses, prairie dogs, deer & such. There was a pretty thick layer of smoke lingering, no fault of the park but it did make for a rough outdoor time & lousy landscape photos. I've been a lot of places and have to see a better sunset than I've seen here. It's a great place to unplug & reconnect with nature.

We were camping at Theodore Roosevelt National Park during a 100+ degree heat wave, so a dip in…read moresome water was a must. This pool is small but it wasn't too crowded even on a scorching August afternoon. Admission was $4, and the life guards do take a 15 minute break every hour so everyone must clear the pool during that time. The combined changing/shower rooms were clean as well as the rest of the place, and pool noodles and the like are provided at no extra charge. I'll definitely be back next time I find myself in the area on a hot summer day!
