The small lake is right next to the highway, and offers birdwatching, non-motorized boating, primitive camping, and fishing. While not a premier fishing lake, Camel's Hump can offer an angler a variety of species in a single day: largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and walleye are all found here. Most fish are small, but there's a few lunkers in there I'm sure. The shoreline wrapped in cattails, redwing blackbirds, wading birds and waterfowl make this a good spot to have a quick picnic along the side of the highway. There are lots and lots of small lakes and reservoirs in NoDak like this one, but that doesn't make it any less nice to stop in and take an hour or two to slow down.

I was a little surprised that they called this a visitor center because it's really just a rest stop with a bathroom and a small office. It was just after 5:00 when we arrived and everything was closed but I noticed that the bathrooms both had signs on them that had been taped up that said out of order. I thought that was odd because I understand one restroom being out of order, but both? Anyway, we decided to get some dinner and come back in the morning. When we returned there were some gentlemen emptying the garbage cans and as I walked up to the office again , they told me that a water main had broke a few days ago so they put out of order signs on the bathrooms because they have no water. When I asked about the "visitors center" they said they didn't have any information but that they had just decided to close down that whole area since it closes for the season in 10 days anyway.

It's a large parking area and I had no trouble negotiating it with the Sprinter van. A Class A would easily fit in here. It's late morning so I took advantage of the level parking for a nap and then a walk around before visiting the restroom. The Coal Diggers (the stage band) are proffessional musicians and the intermission comedian was hilarious. The whole performance with the horses and the fireworks was top notch. I have seen the Musical several times over the years and this is one of the very best. I cannot recommend it more highly.

All performances were live with a live band no prerecordings. The singers and dancers were great and the choice of music was very entertaining. Even though we went through the bottom portion, we were able to see some horses and look out at the beautiful views. We were able to get junior ranger books and badges. I even got to get a magnet from the little shop at the painted canyon visitor center. It was much hotter than we thought it would be, so we were not able to do any hikes during our visit in July. But even just driving through the land was beautiful.

This visit was a quick ride out at the end of our time off. No over-crowding, decent rustic camping, lots of wildlife & plenty of space to roam. South Unit loop has a lot of construction going right now, which makes it an out & back va a loop. We spotted plenty of bison, horses, prairie dogs, deer & such. There was a pretty thick layer of smoke lingering, no fault of the park but it did make for a rough outdoor time & lousy landscape photos. I've been a lot of places and have to see a better sunset than I've seen here. It's a great place to unplug & reconnect with nature.

If it wasn't for the nice staff member (wish I would have gotten his name or remembered where he worked) working at the entrance to the escalator I would give the whole show 1 star based on how the handicapped are treated. Fantastic family atmosphere. The Medora Musical has been running with a new show every summer for…read morethe past 60 years! Kids and adults will enjoy. With the amphitheater seating there is not a bad seat in the house. I would recommend sitting higher up to soak it all in. The volume of the singing and performances is crystal clear. The show has two acts with a 20 minute break between sets and another performer performs ( we had a comedian). There are concession items and souvenirs for sale throughout the show. No alcoholic beverages.

I'd recommend stopping here while you're visiting Theodore Roosevelt National park and the town of Medora.

Excellent smaller museum combining both the history of Native Americans and cowboys located just a…read morefew yards away from the entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the adorable town of Medora. This self-guided museum was the perfect place to stop before our journey into the actual park, and I really think it should be on your itinerary when in the area if it isn't already. It won't take a ton of time, maybe an hour or so to complete the three levels, but it's really worth it! The museum has a minimal fee for adults, free entrance for kiddos 7 and under, and free entrance for those 18 and under on Wednesdays and Sundays. Don't miss the short, but really informative documentary about the land here which was very interesting to see prior to heading out into it. The film speaks about Theodore Roosevelt's connection to the area and the battles which have taken place here. They even have saddle seats in the theater the kiddos loved! The kiddos ages 6 & 8 also loved riding the horses and dressing up like cowgirls! I loved tying them up in a lasso for a bit! Don't miss this section of you have wee ones with you! I really liked that this museum combines both Native American history and well as that of the cowboys. I loved the contrast of old and modern found in the exhibits here. There's amazing artifacts from the Native Americans such as moccasins, instruments, intricate beaded clothing, bear claw accessories, moccasins, arrowheads and more. There's also amazing detailed saddles, bad-a** guns, awards and metals from new rodeo stars, hats, belt buckles and more. We highly recommend a visit here for full understating and appreciation of the park. A few cool photo op items across the way like a giant buffalo skull the kids love playing in!
