This little gem of a park was listed on our ND 12 months/12 hikes list & we decided it was the perfect time to give it a try. It's located just outside of Roosevelt National Park & the terrain is very similar. We hiked out through badlands and grasslands vegetation. At times, the overgrowth was chest deep & there are several thorny plants covering the trails, as well as cacti. My legs were pretty well shredded. Be sure to load a map prior to heading out, as there is very limited cell service & we hit quite a few spots where the trail split with no signs / areas where there was no visible trail split, but you needed to walk a few feet over from the trail you were on to get on the trail you need to be on - very frustrating to have to double back to find it, when not actively tracking progress. Mosquitoes are almost as thick as the grasshoppers and there's a lot of open area- bring bug repellent if they find you tasty & sun protection, along with plenty of water. Watch for washouts/ trail closure signs. You'll likely see deer & cows, possibly snakes. The views are magnificent at times, especially at the start/finish. Fabulous sunset on the way out too! Before we left, we filled our bottles with nice, cold water from the fill station.

Facilities were super clean, sites were spacious and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Showers were especially clean (possibly cleaner than my home shower ) and are free to registered campers! Be sure to catch Ranger Shawn while you're around. He had some great insight on good trails and went above and beyond to make sure we had a comfortable stay and a good time while at the park.

It's a small-ish local museum so it won't take much time. You'll find artifacts dedicated to both cowboys and Native Americans which is great. I've learned a lot after my visit and it was worth the time and money. Lots of beautiful items being exhibited and you probably won't see such a big collection of artsy saddles anywhere! I'd recommend stopping here while you're visiting Theodore Roosevelt National park and the town of Medora.

This self-guided museum was the perfect place to stop before our journey into the actual park, and I really think it should be on your itinerary when in the area if it isn't already. It won't take a ton of time, maybe an hour or so to complete the three levels, but it's really worth it! The museum has a minimal fee for adults, free entrance for kiddos 7 and under, and free entrance for those 18 and under on Wednesdays and Sundays. Don't miss the short, but really informative documentary about the land here which was very interesting to see prior to heading out into it. The film speaks about Theodore Roosevelt's connection to the area and the battles which have taken place here. They even have saddle seats in the theater the kiddos loved! The kiddos ages 6 & 8 also loved riding the horses and dressing up like cowgirls! I loved tying them up in a lasso for a bit! Don't miss this section of you have wee ones with you! I really liked that this museum combines both Native American history and well as that of the cowboys. I loved the contrast of old and modern found in the exhibits here. There's amazing artifacts from the Native Americans such as moccasins, instruments, intricate beaded clothing, bear claw accessories, moccasins, arrowheads and more. There's also amazing detailed saddles, bad-a** guns, awards and metals from new rodeo stars, hats, belt buckles and more. We highly recommend a visit here for full understating and appreciation of the park. A few cool photo op items across the way like a giant buffalo skull the kids love playing in!

Pres. Theodore Roosevelt was a conservationists who said, "I would not have been president had it…read morenot been for my experience in North Dakota." In 1883, Roosevelt arrived in the Badlands to hunt bison. He purchased the Maltese Cross Ranch & was a working cowboy here. Roosevelt wrote 3 books about his experiences. The Maltese Cross Cabin was a temporary home for Roosevelt. He would split his time between Dakota & New York for the next several years. In 1884, he established the Elkhorn. By 1887, Roosevelt began to sell his interests in the cattle industry. By 1900 the cabin was sold. The cabin traveled from Missouri to Portland, to Fargo, ND before settling on the grounds of the state capital in Bismarck. The Daughters of the American Revolution took over the care of the cabin, and acquired many of the items you can see today. In 1959, twelve years after the park was established, the Maltese Cross Cabin came to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Restored to its original state, we walked in Roosevelt's footsteps behind the South Unit Visitor Center.

If you like old farming equipment, this is the place for you! Although, I know very little about…read morefarm equipment, there was some other very interesting pieces to look at: 1) a 1889 Buggy, which was used by the Country Doctor 2) a little cabin and 3) an arrowhead display. This place is open during the summer months, but after or before Labor Day you'll have to ask a staff member at the museum next door to open it up with their keys. Enough of us (a group of like 9) asked and they happily obliged and took us in. There was also a cool updated section, where you could hear the sounds of the many machines. My only wish is that the informational plaques would be a little bit bigger (or bigger font to read). Some of the plaques are not in places that are easy to access (can't get up close or around the machines). Overall, it is worth coming over to look at if you're right by the visitors center or the museum! I enjoyed learning a few new things!

The Coal Diggers (the stage band) are proffessional musicians and the intermission comedian was hilarious. The whole performance with the horses and the fireworks was top notch. I have seen the Musical several times over the years and this is one of the very best. I cannot recommend it more highly.

All performances were live with a live band no prerecordings. The singers and dancers were great and the choice of music was very entertaining. If it wasn't for the nice staff member (wish I would have gotten his name or remembered where he worked) working at the entrance to the escalator I would give the whole show 1 star based on how the handicapped are treated. Fantastic family atmosphere. The Medora Musical has been running with a new show every summer for…read morethe past 60 years! Kids and adults will enjoy. With the amphitheater seating there is not a bad seat in the house. I would recommend sitting higher up to soak it all in. The volume of the singing and performances is crystal clear. The show has two acts with a 20 minute break between sets and another performer performs ( we had a comedian). There are concession items and souvenirs for sale throughout the show. No alcoholic beverages.
