I was so pleased to see the pristine forest understory. No garlic mustard crowding out the natives! Kudos to the staff and volunteers for taking such good care of this beautiful resource. The woods looked healthy--like what I remembered from childhood, before garlic mustard invaded the Midwest. It made me realize how much we have lost in many of our woods. I really was here to see migrating warblers, and I was rewarded with bunches of Palm, Black and White, Chestnut-Sided, Magnolia, Yellow-Rumped, and a brilliant pair of Blackburnian warblers. There was also a Red-Breasted Grosbeak sitting about five feet over my head letting me get a good look at him. The trail I walked wound through the woods and along a pretty creek and the air was full of birdsong. There was also a nice visitor's center. Great place.

Yes, summer camp has bugs and tents and the great outdoors - I don't see that as a negative. There are plenty of summer camps that cater to all types of kids, including those that need internet and air conditioning in order to have a good time. My favorite part about the programming at Camp Anokijig is the amount of self-directed choices each camper gets to make, every day. Skills are chosen once they arrive at camp. There are multiple free periods each day, where all camp activities are fully staffed and the campers get to choose what they want to do. These campers get more age-appropriate independence and the opportunity to make their own decisions during one week at Camp Anokijig than they do anywhere else.

Camp has a rich history of scouting. It is non-profit, non-sectarian and state licensed. The facilities we offer include a large dining hall with a fully stocked kitchen, shower house, dormitory and cabins for rent year round for your large group or your individual family. Much of the property is managed forest consisting of mixed deciduous forest at the northern edge of the kettle morraine. Activities include swimming, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, sledding, and indoor and outdoor games". I have fond memories of this place. In 1961 I was the nature counselor for the Boy Scout Camp that was flourishing at the time. That same summer I was tapped for the Order of the Arrow; and spent the night in the dark woods alone as part of the initiation. This is a place for the entire family. The cabins are for anywhere from two people to a large indoor facility that will fit a dozen or more. Eiric and Sara Nelson are your hosts. They have a nice family with them there, including their dog, Tuck. The west side is mostly woods with trails. Pigeon Lake is one of the nicer lakes in Manitowoc County. I have fond memories of the island in the lake. If you spend time here you can use canoes and kayaks as part of your rental. Also from their website "Our main lodge is a wonderful space to host a large family gathering or a small wedding. It is approximately 3,000 square feet and can accommodate about 100 people comfortably. It boasts an incredible commercial kitchen, a game area, a cozy fireplace and a large area for tables and chairs. We treat this building as community space for our campers so rental availability is limited. Camp Sinawa is an amazing venue for a wedding. There are multiple cabins that suit any size group from 2 to 12 people and a dorm with 24 sleeping spots arranged in 6 clusters of 4 bunks. The buildings have always been clean, and the on-site owners are a delight -friendly and welcoming and just genuinely kind people. I've been to Sinawa multiple times over the past couple of years, and Sara and the team have clearly put work into improving the camp. (I especially love the new, quieter heaters in the cabins.)
