I've been camping for more than 25 years, whether it be dispersed with limited facilities or sites…read morethat have full on electrical outlets and close to a body of water (like Camp Edison). Yet majority of the time, I have been lucky to get a reservation here. To make a reservation, you will need to go on Camplife.com and select Camp Edison as your location. Reservations open up 6 months prior to your desired camping dates. So if you want to camp around June, you will need to get on the reservation site around December and compete with others in the reservation process. Reserving for May-July are the worst; similar to reserving at Yosemite National Park. It can be frustrating as you will be assigned a random number in the queue at 8am on the dot; so make sure you're logged in at least 15 minutes prior just in case you encounter connection issues. You can be either #1 or #1000; it just depends on how many are on the site at that given time. You also have a time limit to make your reservation or risk to having it swooped by another camper if you fail to do so. I recommend making your reservation on a desktop and not on mobile as you might have issues with cell signal. As far as the experience goes, I just love camping here. Sites are adequately spaced but other "Loops" may be a bit spacier. Most sites are RV/Trailer accomodating. Electric meters for eac site, communal water stations, hot showers (shower card needed) and flushing toilets. They also have a Camp Store near the Check In Booth. There are also vendors that drive around that sell firewood. You can also rent boats at the Shaver Lake Marina, and if fully booked, you can try your luck at the nearby Sierra Marina. Walking distance to Shaver Lake and a few mins drive to the Shaver Lake town. I highly recommend this campgrund if you're lucky to snag a spot online. Also, you can pay for "Day Use" only - which basically is equivalent to a Day Pass. Good luck!

Our campsite could have used a little more shade, but thankfully the weather wasn't too hot during our stay. The vault toilets were plentiful throughout the campground and were kept reasonably clean, which I always appreciate when camping. One of the highlights was the creek, which was perfect for both swimming and fishing, though the water was definitely freezing cold! I was also happy to find that the campground is dog-friendly, as my dog had an amazing time exploring the area and splashing around. Overall, it was a great camping experience, and I'd gladly return in the future.

Turns out, the "parking spot" was actually a tiny campsite. Oops. A normal person would say, "Hey folks, that's a campsite -- you'll need to move." Easy. Done. But not this dude. No, this Mountain Mall Cop skipped "polite" entirely and went straight to interrogation mode: "You have a day pass -- why are you camping?" I tell him, "We're just grilling, didn't realize it was a site since the sign says day use only." He decides I'm lying. Doubles down. Keeps pushing. Because nothing says "public service" like manufacturing conflict where there is none. Then -- THEN -- this cone commander looks at my husband with a "control your woman" face. It takes a real special kind of smart to look to someone's spouse for backup. Discount deputy is lucky I didn't go feral at that point. This wasn't rule enforcement. There was literally nobody else in sight. This was a small man on a power trip, desperate to play cop in a place where the only real crimes are overcooked hot dogs. Pro Tip: If you enjoy being falsely accused, condescended to, and treated like a criminal, this is your paradise. If not, avoid this place like it's serving gas station sushi. Whoever manages this orangutan in a uniform needs to either train him in basic human decency... or at least send him to the dog park to be properly socialized.

Without any reasonable cause, he approached our group at 12 noon and abruptly demanded that we turn off our music, which was neither loud nor disruptive. What made this worse was that other campsites were playing their music at much higher volumes, yet he chose to ignore them and single out our group. The situation escalated later that evening, around 8 PM, when our family was simply sharing stories and enjoying time around the campfire. The same host barged into our site and declared that we were "getting loud," warning us to quiet down and threatening to return "or else." Meanwhile, other campsites were openly showing movies and running loud sound systems without any intervention. This selective enforcement felt malicious, discriminatory, and completely unprofessional. No paying guest should ever feel targeted or treated unfairly, especially when others are allowed to do the very things we were reprimanded for. To make matters worse, the water service was never restored for the entire duration of our stay, an unacceptable inconvenience on top of everything else. Our group, along with our friends and family, will not be returning to Rancheria Campground. Beautiful scenery cannot make up for hostile treatment and inconsistent, disrespectful customer service.

As the temperatures heat up in the Central Valley, the dangers of flooding due to the rapid snow…read moremelt may have temporarily halted travel into both Yosemite and Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. HWY 168 remains open, however, and there are still plenty of snow parks packed with snow along the highway once you get up to the 6000 feet elevation level. If you travel a little further northeast, about an hour's drive from Clovis, you will find Huntington Lake. Much of the lake was still frozen solid when I visited there last weekend and the temperature up there was mild with only a hint of a breeze. There was also plenty of snow along the roads and on the marina and lakebeds, which made it a perfect place to visit to see the snow, take photos of the lake and snow-capped mountains, and escape the heat. Perhaps best of all, there were not too many people who appear to visit the lake since it is mostly frozen and with Shaver Lake, China Peak Mountain Resort, and the aforementioned snow parks all still open for some fun in the snow and outdoor enjoyment. Considered one of the cleanest and most pristine lakes in the Central Valley and in the Sierras. I cannot wait to come up again in another month as the snow is melted down to fish and swim in the lake and hike on its trails. For the first time in over a decade, the water levels will be at full capacity. It is known to get a bit breezy during the summer months, which makes it ideal for sail boating. There are probably another two or three weeks to see and play in the snow. Huntington Lake is my recommended spot to go for those in Fresno County that do not want to travel too far to find a lot of it.

My husband and I made a recent trip to Lake Huntington and stayed at Catavee Campground at Campsite…read more#19 which was opening weekend (Memorial Day wknd end of May). We were mostly snowed in as the snowmelt had not completely gone away from winter but the picnic table, fire pit and most of an area for our tent were clear. And just enough of our driveway for our vehicle to fit. Then one of the park folks camp with a snowplow came to clear the remaining driveway the second morning we were there which was great. This site was incredible. The best features are that it is wide, so it is great for groups I would think. Multiple landings for tents available. We loved that it was shaded and bumped up against the stream/brook which vented out to peekaboo views of the lake. Campsite #21 right next door had direct views of the lake but also lent to more road traffic. Our site was very quiet. Mostly level ground. Definitely call ahead to check the weather and campsite status. We might not have gone had we known there was so much snow on the ground, but we made the best of it. Our camp host Bob was great and lent us a shovel the first night. Several park folks checked on us throughout the wknd. The bathrooms were also great. Flushable toilets. Very clean and well kept with tissue stocked throughout the weekend. My recommendations would be to bring a pop up solar shower since your only option in this area otherwise is the RV site in town for $5 per person which is completely disgusting. 6in of standing water with freezing cold water. Not worth it. Maybe also bring your own wash basins or something for dishwashing as there are no wash sinks nearby. Only a spicket at site #19 where you should not wash your dishes as it can clog the drain and attract bears and other critters. We did not see or hear any wildlife the entire time we were there. We brought our 22lb corgi daschund dog/love of our life and felt comfortable the whole time with her on a tie down stake. Definitely will go back and recommend this site to others!!

Wow! If you have yet to experience the beauty of Huntington Lake, then you are in luck! This past…read moreweekend my wife and I along with several family members of mine, booked a last minute camping trip to Catavee! We were all so happy with the experience. Here are a few things worth mentioning... #1: Sites 13 & 24 are two of the BEST sites at this small campground. If you are going with a group, these are the 2 you want to go for. 24 is nicer than 13 but each of these are on the same loop but back up to each other. As the pictures below show (hoping I can upload the ones we have) you are surrounded by lush forestry throughout your campsite. Luckily, you still feel like you can breathe even with the many trees. These two sites are also close enough to the water spout and the CLEAN restrooms! A small parking lot is also near these two sites as well. Keep in mind that this campground is very small, so really you are close enough to the ONE restroom facility at the camp no matter where you stay. #2: There are no showers in the Huntington Lake area. Luckily for us, a family member brought up a trailer but no one really worried about showering since we were only camping a few days. #3: During the weekdays, you will probably be the ONLY ones at this campsite. This was a huge bonus. During the weekend, just about every site was full which was totally fine because you are in good distance for proper privacy from other campsites. We stayed from Sat-Tues and the last couple days were very nice yet eerie as we were the only ones in the entire campground. Definitely gave us the seclusion and mountain experience we were hoping for! Very nice peaceful break! #4: The Lake is very close to camp. (Walking distance!) But, There are about 5-10 other campgrounds in the area. Keep this in mind when you are deciding. Best thing to do is call the campground registration office! They are very very helpful! They will help you make your selection on the campground that will be best for you. One other campsite that was literally sitting on the lake that we walked through was Deer Creek, and College Campground. If we go back, which we WILL, we will probably try one of these two campgrounds even though Catavee was perfect for us. #5: Rancheria Falls-probably one of the highlights of our trip. We drove our Chevy Tahoe all the way up the dirt road (don't worry, its bumpy but even small cars can make it up), parked, and headed onto the hike. This is a beautiful and very EASY hike to do with the whole family! We had our 3 year old son, and 13 month old daughter who was worn on the back and did it with no problem. BE ADVISED-it gets cliffy as you make your way to the falls. We did not let go of our son and kept him on the hillside of the trail. We hear of too many accidents when families go on hikes, so be very careful. Also-perfect trail to pack a lunch and eat somewhere on the way. There were only a few others doing the hike that we happened to walk past. It is beautiful and was definitely a highlight for us! It was 1 hour total round trip tops. #6: There are no bears that come through the campsites in the Huntington Lake area. This was very important for being my wife's first camping trip. She slept well at night! :)

February 25, 2020 Tuesday…read more Dry creek trailhead is at the southwest corner of Shepherd and Sunnyside. There's a parking lot ( free ) that can fit about 50 cars , clean restrooms , a windmill and a metal horse statue. Cross the street heading east and you'll find a trail. It's along a canal that's home to Canada Goose, ducks , mallards , coots , etc. I saw at least a dozen Canada Goose gracefully floating , ducking their heads under, chasing each other , taking naps under the warm sunlight. When I first got to the trail, I heard loud screeching sounds that sounded like eagles or owls. I had seen an owl here before but when I looked up with my binoculars , there was this huge beautiful Red-tailed hawk . He was screeching so loud and when I looked up at the sky , there was another red-tailed. I think he was trying to mate her. Ahhhh those raptor were so gorgeous. They were too far and couldn't get good pics but filmed their calling sounds. There was a construction going on after about half a mile and there was so much noise and dust , plus most likely there won't be any critters with all that's going on , so I turned around. The trail takes you all the way to the water basin where you can spot the migratory birds . There's huge mansions along the trail , pretty flowers and blossoms , you might spot an own or two or hawks along the way. From the parking lot , if you head south , there's another section of the trail and this one takes you all the way to the Dry Creek Park and there's a botanical gardens next to the park ( Clovis Botanical Gardens ) free admission. I like both sections of the trail . If you wanna see lots of birds go East from the parking lot.

My husband and I just stayed at Kinnikinnick Campground for the first time, and it will not be the…read morelast time, this campsite is amazing! It's super close to Huntington Lake, separated by only 1 road and 1 campsite, so perfect to walk over to the water. It's also less than a quarter mile from the little town, which has a convenient store and restaurant, among a few other places, such as a post office, etc. The campsite was very well maintained. Every day we saw hosts driving through on golf carts multiple times a day, the bathrooms (which have flush toilets) were kept up nicely, and 2 of the stalls even have lights on all night long, making it convenient if you have to use the restroom in the dark. They had a water source too for filling buckets to put out your fires as well. The town convenient store was super convenient to have nearby, for a few things that we forgot. It's important to know, however, that you are going to pay an arm and a leg for anything. A few examples of things we purchased with their prices rounded up: $16 Immodium, $7 graham crackers, $6 marshmellows, etc. The restaurant attached to the convenient store was great too, we had a few drinks there, as well as some garlic.parmesean fries and wings. Although they brought us the wrong wings (we asked for buffalo and got barbeque...they were still good), everything else was great, including the service and atmosphere. To check in for the campsite, you go to a small place a little ways down past the town. The store clerks were super friendly, and the store had cute souvenirs for sale also. The proximity of the campsite to Huntington Lake is awesome, but if you drive 20 ish miles away you also get to Shaver Lake, which is where we spent most of our time, as it was consistently 10 degrees warmer each day than Huntington Lake. While in Shaver Lake we also ate at Shaver Lake Pub and Grill, which had delicious food. A few other close places that we went to while we were camping here were: Mono Hot Springs and Rancheria Falls. Rancheria Falls was very close, only probably 4 miles away, and then it's a 2 mile hike up to the falls. The falls were nice and full still at the end of August. Mono Hot Springs is less than 20 miles away, but it takes over 1 hour to get there, on a very windy/narrow/single-lane road which is very sketchy at times, but thankfully there are some turnouts and my husband was driving.
