Fun lake experience which makes for a great "beach day" when you're camping in the local area. There are many coves and areas to park and setup camp next to the water. On the north side of the lake are three pay parking lots. All three are viable and you don't need a 4x4. We set up around lot 3 one day and had a great time. Secret place. There's a free small parking lot in front of the Lake Watersports Marina. However if you drive south less than a mile from this marina you'll see a nondescript gravel road. Drive down this road then take the first left road and you'll see a small parking lot. This lot is right above the secluded beaches. Parking here will put your car much closer to your perfect beach spot. Tips - There are a few marinas on thia lake but I would NOT recommend the Sierra Marina. Their equipment, specifically their Kayaks are old and broken down. Also, they're not located in a good Kayak spot. I'd much rather recommend Shaver Lake Watersports for Kayaking. read more

So I have a rule about yelp reviews; I make sure not to change my rating of a place because of the people that are there at the time. Like for example, I hate it when someone goes to a movie theatre and gives the theatre one star because they didn't like the movie they saw or because someone in the audience was loud....like, how is that on the theatre? However, that being said, we spent a few days at shaver lake in July and in this instance, I have to say that the people who frequent this place and the people who were here and their actions (like trash everywhere and revving engines and screaming and loud music) directly effected our experience so I am removing a star for that. I highly recommend visiting on a weekday. When we were here on the weekend days or in the evening it was just not enjoyable. There were crowds of people and when I say crowds, I mean you could smell them. Speaking of smell, the bathrooms we visited on two different sides of the lake were unusable; people are animals. The trash was overflowing everywhere and the waterfront reminded me of Lord of the Flies. We waited 15 minutes in a line of honking cars in one lot where there was a boat launch; at first because people did not seem to know what they were doing or how to move out of the way for traffic and then later because people were literally blasting their car stereo for people standing around and someone started dancing in the middle of the only path out. It felt like a lot of people were intoxicated and it felt quite unsafe. Had we only visited on the evenings or weekends, I don't think I would have ever come back. That being said, sunset over the lake was still gorgeous. When we came on the weekday, even though there were still people here, it was a different caliber of people and it made the time so much more enjoyable. There were people swimming quietly and laying on the beach enjoying the sun, as well as people hiking around appreciating nature. It was quiet and serene and the views were beautiful. If I had rated this lake on my experience, it would most likely have been one star on the majority of visits, however the lake itself deserves four stars. It is quite dirty, but I wonder how many people the parks department would have to have working to combat the amount of trash people leave lying around so I can't really fault them for it. If we return again, it will be in the off season and it will be on weekdays only. read more

One of the premier lakes in the Central Valley for water skiing, jet skiing, paddle boating and fishing. Majestic, sapphire colored lake that is surrounded by giant pine trees and granite boulders. One of the major scenic and recreational gate-way attractions into the Sierra National Forest. There are a number of rental vacation homes, charming bed and breakfast, hotels and resorts near the lake. Paddleboats and canoes can be rented at the marina. A few jet ski and water ski shops are close by. Additionally, there are some "can't-miss" spots to eat within a mile away. Perhaps best of all, there is plenty of free parking right off Tollhouse Road/CA-168 and a "stone's throw" from the lake. Just 42 miles from Clovis taking CA-168 all the way through. I can think of no other place I would rather be to escape the oppressive heat of Fresno County and enjoy the great outdoors. read more

Shaver lake was such a charming place! I never heard of the place until a couple of months ago. It was a warm and breezy day in October. Such a lovely place! We were able to walk around the lake and it was so beautiful. My husband loves skipping stones and we found some pretty great places for throwing some stones. There were many park benches around the lake and we found a nice spot for lunch. Definitely recommend a visit! read more

As a certified beach gal, I wasn't sure what to expect with Shaver Lake. Yes, that's right. A Central Valley (born and raised) gal had never been to Shaver Lake. It's definitely a rare thing. My first experience was highlighted by the fact that I was able to share it with some lovely friends, who also happen to own a boat. We were lucky enough to take it for a spin (is that what you use for boat-talk?) on Shaver Lake this past weekend. The water was a beautiful turquoise blue (see photos) and luckily most of the shore was spared from the Creek Fire. Although still viewable on mountain tops you'll find plenty of shade and greenery along the shore. The water temperature was a little cool for my swimming preference - a chilly 67* - but plenty of folks were braving the cool waters with skiing, wakeboarding, floating, and everything in between. It wasn't super packed, but I can imagine on a warm day it might be. Beaches were clean. Water was clean. People were pleasant. You can ask for a better lake experience! read more

After the Creek Fire, I was worried what we might find. I came away with a renewed respect for CalFire! They were able to save the town of Shaver, the cabins on the point, and many of the developments in the area. The marina, which I had thought we list, is still running strong! It's inspiring to see the damage of the fire in contrast with the areas that were back burned and saved. The signs along the entire route from Millerton and Friant on up are wonderful to see. Thank you to the heroes who saved so much of this amazing place!! read more

Beautiful lake and very popular for locals and those from other areas, as well. In the summer the public parking areas are full and people will park along the sides of the highway. There's a boat ramp and marina, public restrooms and many places to claim your beach side spot. The town is cute and quaint. There's a decent sized grocery store (Ken's), and many options for eating. Burgers, Mexican food, pizza, sandwiches, cinnamon rolls and even ice cream. In the winter, you can stop by Ken's for a pass to use the snow parks. You'll see the signs for the snow parks on 168 when you continue past Shaver Lake. read more

We arrived at Shaver Lake on June 29 as a family of Mexican and Hispanic descent. Unfortunately, we were treated unfairly and were not allowed to park closer to the shore. This forced my 60-year-old father to walk for 30 minutes carrying all our belongings, which resulted in him injuring himself. The person who discriminated against us was extremely rude and inconsiderate. We believe the management should review and reconsider their approach to staff after this incident. read more

What a beautiful lake! While too cold to swim in the winter, Shaver lake has some great areas for a picnic, sledding, and sunbathing. There are hiking trails along the shore, making for a serene California vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the big towns. Shaver Lakes is GORGEOUS! I mean, what more could you ask for? Beautiful mountains, the scenery is beautiful, quiet, and lovely weather. Just less than 50 miles from Fresno and near Yosemite, this place is not to be missed! Honestly, being on lockdown for a couple of months because of Covid-19 was getting to me. I was happy when the MR. asked if I wanted to go camping to spend a weekend in a different place other than my home! Shoot, I must have shown too much excitement because the next thing you know, I was packing my house up with all my camping gear and didn't care where we were going, as long as it was outside of the Bay Area! We left on Friday night and took a nice 3-hour drive. We arrived late in the evening, and set up our tent, hung out at the campfire then went to bed. The next day, it was like we entered a new world! Being up in altitude of also 2,000m (6,000 ft) elevation, the scenery was breathtaking! Out tent faced an awesome view and how nice to wake up to the birds chirruping. Ahhh! There is no way you can deny amazing mother nature this place has to offer. The lake is crystal clear and not too crowded with people during the time we went. Right before you get to the campsites, there is a place that sells wood for $10. I suggest you support small owned businesses and pick some up for your trip. I wish the MR. would have sent more money to purchase some campfire wood as it was nice to wake up and go to sleep to a warm fire before bed. Shaver Lakes is a perfect weekend getaway to go hiking, camping, or to the lakes. Even during the time we went in May, there was still some snow in the mountains. Also, it gets EXTREMELY cold at night, so make sure you bring a -0 sleeping bag! This place is pretty remote, so no open bathrooms if you are camping here! Overall, this was one of the best things I did during shelter-in-place! I'm happy to say we were able to come here and experience such amazing views of Shaver Lakes! I will be back! read more

If your looking for a quick get away to go to the lake during the summer or to build a snowman in the winter shaver lake is definitely a good place to go. Some places has parks that requires you to have a permit to park but besides that there many other great places to park on the side for free. read more

I have never slept in a tent. Only a sleeping bag and the bug filled floor. I am also almost as allergic to Mosquitos as boring people are to me... not like "My Girl" bee-status, though. If you're trying to kill me, don't think to take me somewhere with tons of mosquitos and it's gonna be a done dada. I'm going to get more bitten than you and the mosquito bites are going to become the size of tangerines, but my immense self control will not allow me to scratch at all whatsoever; so, they'll just go away probably sooner than yours will. Yours may not be huge, they will be nasty because I know you'll scratch them until they bleed, you sicko. Anyway. No one loovvvesss the cold, I would imagine. Like, ooh 20 degrees, let's go outside and frolic. No. Being cold is painful and you cannot do anything in it without getting dressed in 1,984 layers (yes, like the book by George Orwell). We were the only ones who did not bring RVs. The only ones- and the campgrounds were nearly full. We were badasses. We got there at 4AM the first day, so we slept in our SUV. We didn't want to wake anybody up by setting up our tent and also it was dark and we were unable to see. The next morning we put up our tent. We were there to celebrate our friend's birthday, Selena. She and her husband, Carlos, have camped at Shaver Lake a gazillion times and they love it. Selena and I have an other-worldly connection, so I was very sure I would love it too. Besides, we are both bad ass bitches so I can be out in the cold and be freezing and you'll never know it because I'm not a complainer and I'm non-chalant. Selena and I are both pillars of strength to the people around us, so I knew we would have a great time. I hate bitches because they whine and complain and they need this and they need that and OMG it's too this and OMG it's too that. Well, none of us are those types. It was beyond fun, and we felt extra awesome because we were the only ones who were not sleeping in RVs. We drank and smoked every night and played games and had an awesome fire. We came prepared. We had little propane heaters, disposable hand and feet warmers, I wore a ski suit, we all had beanies, regular shoes, although I brought Reef shoes with the fur lined inside, which you can get from any Skater store online or in person. We brought mega firewood which filled our entire "truck" of our SUV, they brought firewood, we all brought bottles and bottles of propane, propane stove, two coolers, thermoses, blow up mattresses, we had a tandem sleeping bag so it actually got hot in the middle of the night, and what made it way warmer was that we all slept in our tent. I recommend you buy one of those 4 bedroom tents, divide it in two and all sleep together. If you have a bigger party then adjust accordingly. It makes a huge difference. They had already set their tent up when we got there and they were crazy freezing even with their 2 dogs cuddling with them, but the second night and third we were all warm. It was soooo much fun. Bring games and alcohol and weed and that's all you need (besides all those supplies). I think Shaver Lake is the best camping spot I've been to. I have been to Tahoe, King's Canyon, Yosemite, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Minnesota (I know the last 4 are entire States), but Shaver Lake is the best. In the summer, we'll go back with our jetskiis. read more

It takes a few hours to get there especially pulling 4500lbs of load up is a little white knuckle driving. But once your there it's so relaxing. Clean air, beautiful trees and lake. When the summer temperatures get up there, we sometimes take a little road trip to cool down and enjoy the outdoors. Over the years, the extended family has packed up and headed to the Central Sierra and for many jet a ski trip. There is a marina at Shaver Lake that can provide rentals. It's a seasonal businesses that is usually open from late April to the mid October but that is dependent upon the amount of water in the lake. With recent drought years, make sure to check the water level before you head on up. The backcountry is gorgeous and the nearby areas include Edison, Florence and Wishon. However, jet skis are not allowed in all of these lake areas. Find the fun and pour it on. read more

If you're in the Fresno area during the summer and beating the heat is more important to you than your sanity (trust me, the kids will be asking "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"), Shaver Lake is a nice spot to cool off, have fun and spend time with the outdoors. Taking the 168 Freeway through Clovis and into farming territory, the freeway turns into a long winding, curving, up and down road that stretches about 40 miles until you reach Shaver Lake. The scenery is mostly farmland with the occasional view of cows or horses wondering the properties near the road (this will keep the children entertained for brief periods on the long ride). Along the way, you'll pass through two small town shopping and dining areas where you can stretch your legs and grab a bite to eat, gas up, etc. One is in Prather, the other is Shaver Lake. Shaver lake offers it all: Boating, Jet Skiing, Canoeing, Swimming and Fishing. Through in more passive outdoor activities like laying out in the sun, lounging on an inflatable raft, or merely soaking your feet in the water, and Shaver Lake becomes a place where there is something for everyone. At the lake's shore, there is mostly sand (as opposed to dirt or rock). This allows the kids to enjoy building sand castles just like they could at a beach. As you walk into the water, there are spots with HUGE, jagged rocks, so I'd suggest some type of water shoe/sandal if you're going to be hanging around the shoreline playing/swimming. What's really nice about this place is that the various watercraft on the lake can't leave a wake for the first 150 so yards out to the middle of the lake. This helps ensure safety for those who just want to swim and lounge around in/on the water. Once you're past the white buoys on the water, WATCH OUT, because that's where the people with their water toys like to have some FAST fun on the water. No incidents on our trip, which was nice. You can BBQ anywhere on the various beaches here, however, certain beaches are gas grills only (no charcoal or wood fires), so please read the posted signs on each road/pathway down to the beach areas. Overall, my family spent almost seven hours at this lake, and never had one child complain they were bored. On the way back, the majority of them knocked out in the car, making it a peaceful and quiet ride back. Shaver Lake is truly a local gem for those willing to seek it out. read more

I've never been here! Sad that it's only an hour away, and I've never enjoyed its beauty and bounty. The drive is a killer with all the twists and turns, but if the road was uneven then it would've been terrible. But I survived. And once you get there, you forget about it anyway because if you're a nature lover, such as myself you lose yourself to the scenery around you and just explore. Great lake. Small but big enough for boats, jet skis, cannoes. If you can handle all the hills and turns it takes to get here. Went with family and the kids on 4th of July weekend. Had to go offroading to find a quiet area but well worth it. We were able to spend the whole day. The kids had plenty of fun. Only got a little toasted. Be careful if you plan to barbecue. There are some areas that are ok and some that are not. And they can be right next to each other. read more

This look a lot like the view from my living room. it is one of the most afordable lake and snow recreatonal areas in California. There is a dedicated population that has dedicated their lives to keeping this area going when countless market drops and droubts have all but closed the town, only to be reborn over and over. read more

My family and I love coming up once a year. The view is beautiful! My kids enjoy coming here during the winter time so they can play in the snow and experience how cold the weather can get.
