We stayed at Dinky Creek on July 1 to the third. We have a 35 foot fifth wheel. It was a little difficult to get in and park due to the winding roads and some of the trees could scratch your rig. We were in site 61 right next to the camp host. Once parked we had plenty of room. Mr. Snyder is one of the best hosts I've ever had. He was very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive. What can I say with a host like that it makes coming back to a location, attractive.

A solid campground and creek experience. I'll start my review with the main negative. There will always be rude campers in California and Dinkey Ceeek is no different. First night camping and there was a group of 4 families (all parked at different sites in the same area) and decided to congregate in the lot next to ours.. It was like 11:30 PM before the loud drunk hyena laughing stopped. They weren't the only jerks here, but they were the closest to us. The good news was that the camp hosts did speak with them the next day and they were less loud going forward.. Moral of the story is to complain if you're neighbors are noisy after quiet time (10pm). - The price of a shower token at the market is $2.50 for 4 minutes. Read the instructions before using the token, it's confusing. The shower itself is small and pretty gross. - It's a relatively short drive to the McKinley Sequoia grove. Recommended. - Spending a day on one of Shaver Lake's beaches is well worth it. Highly recommend. - The Honeymoon pool and the slides are both cool experiences. Unfortunately too many day-users are pigs and leave tons of trash behind. - No internet or cell service. - Not many mosquitoes. - Sites 81 is pretty good as it only has one neighbor. - Hiking trails are few and far between and they're not very well maintained. There is one one trail to the old logging mill. Highly recommended ( you can also drive to the mill). Tip - There's a secret pool and slide area next to camp. Message me for location, it's in the campground.

You can never quite tell what kind of animals you will meet at a place like this! We saw a snake kill a fish! And one camper told us, get away from our campground--our dog bites! Never can tell! But the place is awesome and unforgettable--campsites are fairly well spaced and the camp hosts, a British couple who travels the US as camp hosts, were incredible! If you can, get a site in the creek side--those are often set against rock formations. The rocks slides are fun, but so full of people. There are dead trees galore, maybe from the drought or bark beetle. It does detract somewhat from the views. And do not forget to go to the waterfall, a 15 minute hike from the main water slide. The series of cascading falls, the lack of people as opposed to the hundreds near the main slides, simply unforgettable.

This was our 6th year at Dinkey Creek. Last year I left a bad review because of the condition of the cabins. But this year I am happy to say that it was so much better. We had a great time. Paul, the guy in charge, was great. He told us some places to visit and came by as we were leaving. I told him about the grills missing or not working and he said they were all being replaced. There were two things that our cabin 68 needed which was a latch on the side door to the cabin and one of the window panes was broken out in the kitchen window. Picnic tables could use some work too.

Sadly to report the river is not going this time of year.

Looks like a great place to camp but make sure you check ahead of time if water is in the river

Wow I'm honored to write the first review for this place. Friends, this is the holy grail of forest campsites. 10 years ago my family stumbled onto this campsite as we were driving around lost in the middle of the night in the Sierra National Forest. We decided to park here for the night, woke up in the morning to the beautiful stream and dense trees, and ended up staying a week. We've been coming back every summer since. It doesn't sound like much, but Dinkey Creek's truly lives up to its name - it's unpretentious and relatively unknown, unlike its more popular neighbor Shaver Lake. But there's some kind of wonderful charm this remote little place has that brings its regulars back year after year. Refer here for a campground map: http://www.recreation.gov/camping/map_of_Dinkey_Creek_Ca/r/campgroundMap.do?page=map&search=site&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70376&topTabIndex=CampingSpot J and K loops are the prime spots to camp out in because it's closest to the creek play area. The road literally stops right where you see it on the map - beyond that is nothing but nature. You can slide down the mossy rocks into the shallow stream (a trashbag will do!) and there's also parts where it's deep enough to jump off the rocks. Honeymoon Pool is a great spot for dipping as well, so I'd take Loop I if J or K are full. Be sure and reserve early to get those! We try to nab ours six months in advance. One of my favorite things to do: At night, lay out on the enormous rocks near the edge campsites and stargaze. It'll blow your mind. Tent campsites and RV hookup sites available. Most of the sites are shaded. There's also places for hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. If you want a bigger body of water, Shaver Lake is not too far off as well. Convenience-wise, there's a general store and showers at the beginning of the loop. They renovated a great deal in 2007 so facilities are clean and there's paved roads. To be honest, I'm hesitant about submitting a review so I can selfishly keep this place a little secret for myself. Trust me, this place is definitely worth the drive.

How strenuous of a hike is it to the slicks and first pool? I have a 3 year old I'm wondering if he can do it?

from the campgrounds, I would say that it is okay, but you may be carrying him on the way back. It might be like a mile...either way, there is tons to look at and many chances to go down tot he creek before the slicks. In fact, those are better… Read more

Will the creek be open this weekend?

Hi there, yes, they told us that it would when we were there yesterday!

    Is there cell service?

They have a telegraph you can use.

    Do they have bear lockers?

I can't remember if they had bear lockers but they had bear claws that were delicious!

Yet majority of the time, I have been lucky to get a reservation here. To make a reservation, you will need to go on Camplife.com and select Camp Edison as your location. Reservations open up 6 months prior to your desired camping dates. So if you want to camp around June, you will need to get on the reservation site around December and compete with others in the reservation process. Reserving for May-July are the worst; similar to reserving at Yosemite National Park. It can be frustrating as you will be assigned a random number in the queue at 8am on the dot; so make sure you're logged in at least 15 minutes prior just in case you encounter connection issues. You can be either #1 or #1000; it just depends on how many are on the site at that given time. You also have a time limit to make your reservation or risk to having it swooped by another camper if you fail to do so. I recommend making your reservation on a desktop and not on mobile as you might have issues with cell signal. As far as the experience goes, I just love camping here. Sites are adequately spaced but other "Loops" may be a bit spacier. Most sites are RV/Trailer accomodating. Electric meters for eac site, communal water stations, hot showers (shower card needed) and flushing toilets. They also have a Camp Store near the Check In Booth. There are also vendors that drive around that sell firewood. You can also rent boats at the Shaver Lake Marina, and if fully booked, you can try your luck at the nearby Sierra Marina. Walking distance to Shaver Lake and a few mins drive to the Shaver Lake town. I highly recommend this campgrund if you're lucky to snag a spot online. Also, you can pay for "Day Use" only - which basically is equivalent to a Day Pass. Good luck!

The camp hosts take great pride in keeping the place clean, we saw someone cleaning the bathrooms multiple times a day. I'm telling you, you would never guess that these are non-flushing restrooms. They were immaculate. We stayed at spot #60, which is in the lower part of the loop and was a very short, easy walk, to the lake. The site was perfect, not too close to other sites so there was some privacy, and only one site away from the restrooms. Fair warning though, you do have to take some steps down from the parking spot to the actual site, so if you have a lot of stuff to carry, just be aware that you will need to travel down about 5-6 steps. The site itself has decent shade, the picnic table and fire pit are in great condition and there is a very nice, clean, open and perfectly flat spot to put your tent between two trees. If you forget something, "town" is just outside of the campground entrance, within a few minutes you have access to restaurants, and other stores. Somehow though, you feel off-grid, even though you are so close to town. We had full cell phone service, even though we chose to stay off our phones, if you needed to use them you totally could. Ensure to bring lots of warm clothes to bundle up in the evening and be kind to the campground. Ensure to pack anything that was packed in to keep the area clean. One of the backrest clip loops was broken (kayaing without a working backrest is horrible), and the deck hatch was so old that water leaked right into the hold causing flooding. It also appears that this Marina knows about the kayak flooding because they drilled a custom drain hole in the back of the kayak for flooding drainange. These issues weren't realized until I was already on the water. Obviously basic expectations of a kayak rental weren't met. The previous day we rented from Shaver Lake Watersports and they had all new kayaks. So new that they still had the brochures attached to the kayaks. Perhaps that's why SLW cost $10 more an hour to rent.. I guess you get what you pay for. As others have said, it's teens working here on a summer job. Nothing wrong with that of course but they're not really trained to look for issues with a boat (or kayak in my case) before sending someone out in the lake. They also don't have knowledge of Shaver Lake's boating laws. The kid that launched me said that everyone was required to wear a life vest. After looking it up, the law states 12 and under must wear a life preserver. I took it off when out of Marina sight. Tip - if you're staying on the lake as a "day use" and are thinking about renting a kayak, make sure it's for half-a-day or full-day rental.
