There was a group of people and two of the men were up late after their families went to bed and harassed me in my tent by yelling and screaming into the tent at midnight and tried to open our tent and come in while I was sleeping. Located just south of Lahaina, Maui. I love this camp! This was my first time to Maui and to this camp site. They offer tent camping, car camping, tent-a-lows (glamping) and cabins. I did the tent camping option for $36 a night. Tent-a-lows are about $165 a night. I came around valentines day February 2026. The temperature is 65F low, 75-80F high. The night was super windy for a tent, but was only windy between 6-9pm, meaning 20-25 mph winds. If you can hold out at that time, it was calm winds all night afterwards. Next time, I may prefer doing a car camping site, which comes with a picnic table, and there are around 20 sites near the gate. I may also prefer a tent-a-low in order to not pack a tent, sleeping pad. They are also less windy, as they are located farther from the beach. Pros: - private beach - it was prime whale watching season, but i was the only one on the beach. 95% of the tent sites were occupied, I believe all the tent-a-lows were occupied. - hot showers, no roof...but it's great - clean and nice bathrooms with a roof - free coffee and hot water in the morning. Get it when it opens at 7:00am, cuz it will run out in 15-20 minutes - plenty of parking - approx. 35-40 minutes from Kahului Airport - super fun to rent an E-bike from Krank Cycles, and ride south to Olowalu. It was pretty. You can ride E-bike through the campsite. It wasn't as pretty to ride north from Krank Cycles to Lahaina to Honokowai Beach, but all good. Cons: - getting to some of the more remote sites was hard with a roller luggage. I stayed at Tent Site 25, which was lovely, but the rolling luggage had to go over dirt, which is ok, but bark chip piles - hard to find tent site at night. Arrive in daylight if you can. It's impossible to navigate at night or find the restroom - they staff is really accomodating, and even took my call at 1:00am as that is my arrival time. - It is approximately 15 minute car drive to Lahaina dock for whale watching, and 35-40 minutes from Kahului airport - there are not much cons I had such a pleasant experience, I'll be back for sure! read more

​​ we have been enjoying Camp olowalu from the very beginning since there were only three tentalos it's been great to watch it grow . It's so beautiful how almost everything is edible on the property - there's lavender there's green onions growing you can cut for your salad there are mango . This place is very special to us I celebrate every birthday here and we always look forward to it each time we go it seems we enjoy it more than the last and we've been probably at least 10 times . It is such a great atmosphere it's so nice to be taking a warm shower while you're looking at the West Maui mountains!! My old boss rented out the cabins that has the kitchen and the big area for a bonfire it was amazing it was so nice that we could all have a few drinks and no one had to drive we really enjoyed that and the tentalos are our favorite spot . I've only observed the car camping and the tent camping and everything seems wonderful it's always very clean if you're going to shower or use the bathroom everything about it is great if you have a problem with noise bring your earplugs..& open your eyes to paradise! Me and my boyfriend went to Maui for the first time and decided to go car camping for affordability and just a fun way to experience the island. Camp Oahu had all the necessities we needed, it was beautiful, and the staff was extremely accommodating. Additionally, we didn't have to go through the trouble of getting a camp permit through the city. I had some reservations at first: showering, cleanliness, going to the bathroom, amount of space at the campsite... Etc.. but the campsite is extremely beautiful, clean and has all the necessities you need. The showers ended up being our favorite part of the experience because they were outdoors and you could just look up and see the sky. The stars were one of the most amazing part. Additionally, the campsite is super accessible to Wailea, Kihei, and Lahaina. Overall, a 10 out of 10 experience, I would totally do it again. read more

We stayed here for 2 nights and it is BEAUTIFUL! Access to the beach and right down the road from amazing snorkeling. A couple little things I would say is that it can be VERY windy. We slept in our car the second night because it was so windy which was fine. Our tent almost blew away haha. The windy does make the dust fly around. So if you are car camping it would probably be best instead of tent camping. Also at night around 9 we got sprayed by sprinklers walking to bathroom/ showers. All of that to say it is a very clean and super nice area for camping and the view can't be beat. So I would recommend it. read more

The ONLY hangup on this place was not having a bus stop nearby - which obviously isn't something they can control. We Ubered in. Great experience with the customer service. I didnt get to go on my camping trip but the cancellation was very straightforward which made it no stress at all. That's especially nice cuz I'm really busy right now. Cancellations can be so stressful sometimes and it was just so nice to not have to worry a bunch on top of everything else in my day. Buyer beware - FYI this place isn't "temporarily closed" My family decided to do a kayak tour here. We had an odd number of people and the kayak company didn't have accommodating kayaks - no singles & if you have an odd number, you'll be paired with a stranger. Due to this, I stayed back while the other four members of my family went out on the water. While they were in their tour, I had to use the bathroom. It was an emergency as it's that time of the month for me. I followed the signage for the kayak tour but passed the bathrooms near the parking lot - no signage outside the camp ground maps. When I double checked the maps, I found the bathroom closest to the kayak tour location. Mind you, nowhere did it ever dictate on the campground maps or anywhere else that this bathroom by the kayak tour was "private property" - one would think the camp ground is already private property but nope, supposedly there's private property on already private property without signage. So I walked up to the bathroom near the kayak tent to be harassed by "Karen" in cabin 5 that I cannot use this bathroom as I was trying to walk into the facilities. She kept honing in how this was private property even though I tried explaining that I knew, I wouldn't be here unless I payed (bc there's a coded entry gate with security), AND we paid for the kayak tour with my family on this campground. This was not enough as she kept harassing me until I told her it was an emergency due to my menstrual cycle which then she proceeded to give me "permission." Mind you, she was a visitor NOT an employee. Obviously at this point, I wasn't going to use that bathroom after being harassed by the camper potty police 20 times. I proceed to go to the kayak tour tent to ask which bathroom we are allowed to use & was told they didn't work here but btw there was a port-a-potty down the path (with no toilet paper). After finding some landscapers on the property & asking them who I can speak to that works here, they directed me to Tim at the front office. Tim was absolutely NO help & harassed me more than the Karen at Cabin 5. Not only did he try telling me he didn't have the time to speak with the camper bc he was too busy dealing with their gate (we were the only ones here outside of Karen & the landscapers)...once he did speak with her, he told me it was my story versus hers. According to Tim, literally verbatim, Karen in cabin 5 comes here every year & he knows her "personally" to the point he knows "she wouldn't lie." CRAZY behavior. Then he proceed to follow me after I asked him multiple times to leave me alone once he insinuated I made up the entire situation just to place his phone & his finger in front of my face & aggressively point to his phone about the one sign indicating private property & how I couldn't read. At this point I was on the phone with my partner who could hear Tim tapping on his phone through the call bc that's how close to my face he was. The sign was placed on the side of the bathroom building, no where else nor on the path or maps, & every bathroom on their property said only certain cabins can use them. So with Tim's logic here, none of the kayak tour members could use any of their bathrooms due to the signs, not just the supposed "private property" bathroom. Why is this kayak tour located on a private camping ground? Remains to be seen as they work against each other not with one another. We paid almost $400 for this treatment & to be told to basically go f*ck ourselves. Take what you will from this review & Tim - you can go f*ck yourself & Karen at Cabin 5. read more

If you want to fall asleep under a blanket of shimmering stars and wake up in paradise, this is the place to camp in Maui! My husband and I really enjoyed our time here. We car camped for four nights in December 2021-January 2022, and have not had such a pleasant camping experience! We say this as people who have camped in various state and national parks. OUR FAVORITE THINGS: -smooth check-in -hot showers -charging station (there's one on the side of the vending machine building) -clean bathrooms with mirrors (I think the bathrooms are cleaned up to twice a day) -incredible views OTHER THINGS: The only thing we disliked was that the numerous chickens can get pretty noisy. A few times, they woke us up, but we were able to fall back asleep. Landscape is maintained very well. There's also a little beach you can walk to (but the shore is kinda rocky and not so smooth). We did not try kayaking, but I think you can do that here. There's a little general store, too. Some mornings, there's even a fresh basket of free tropical fruit. Oops I did it again! Reserved a tent site after XMas with my visiting son and friends. Tiare and crew are friendly and accommodating to guests. Great outdoor place to be during the pandemic. Firewood and ice are conveniently available. This time we made the short hike to the Olowalu Petroglyphs across the street. Then cooled off in the crystal clear stream if you leave after 11am. You can probably hike high into the West Maui hills, but it's very dry and there's a chance of flash fires all the time from a sprinkling of illegal homeless encampments. Bring your wallet as you pass through the Olowalu General Store or Leodas Pie Shop on the loop back. Be very careful crossing the Highway. No crosswalk and traffic speeds through. Make sure you can see the long view line of cars before crossing. Before dinner, take a slow walk to the wharf along the coast where you'll have a 180 degree view of the West Maui mountains, Haleakala, Big Island (if it's clear), Molokini, Kahoolawe, Sunset, Lanai in that order. BBQ by lantern and relax until the campfire and recharge your batteries overnight (literally). read more

What do you do when hotel prices are setting records and you still want a place to stay on Maui? Camping, of course. I was really skeptical when my friend brought up the idea. Really skeptical, but apparently, it's a thing. Once I made the decision to do the camping thing versus paying $$ to stay at a hotel, I visited the Camp Oluwalu website to book my reservation. I was surprised to find things so cheap and inexpensive. They offer regular tent camping, car camping for the basic fees. Then if you want to upscale your stay, they have tentaloo's for rental as well. All was good after booking my stay and happy that I saved a bunch of money. Upon arrival at the Camp Olawalu site on a brisk Saturday in January 2023, I checked in at the front gate and realized that I didn't bring any tenting equipment. I asked the staff there if I could change to car camping and was ready to pay any additional fees that came with the change. I was happy that they did not require any additional fees. I just had to park the rental car in a certain spot and I was golden for the night. The staff here was super helpful and friendly. During my time here, there was at least 15 vehicles parked in the parking lot. I assumed most of them were tenting or in a tentaloo. I myself had to make do with the rental car, which was not as comfortable as you think it may be. The overall experience here at Camp Oluwalu was as different as you can imagine it to be. Basic camping with tents and stuff. Boy scouting at its finest, or at least something like that. Vastly different than your normal staying in a standard motel or hotel, or even an Airbnb / Vrbo. It's basically camping. Bare bones. Almost like you're homeless but you're not. It's just a different vibe being a tourist and not doing the typical tourist thing because the typical accommodations on the island have become so ridiculously expensive that many people come to camping as an alternative for their vacation. While I have mixed feelings after my experience, I know that I have options whenever i do come back to Maui and whether or not hotel prices will inevitably stay up or come down to attract new people and visitors. I'm thankful that there is a viable option for people like me who budget travel and have a means to include camping in their lives. As for me, the jury is still out on this one. I probably should have planned better but I really love a bed versus sleeping in a rental car for sure. While the price is cheap at $28/night, consider what you are getting into before reserving a camp spot for the night. And so, if you are that adventurous and want to do such a thing like camping to avoid the high price of hotel rooms on Maui, consider yourself prepared and willing to be open to the idea of camping in the rough. There is working showers and clean toilets, which is a life saver. After that, it's still camping. Camp Olawalu is located in the Olawalu area of Lahaina, Maui. The entrance to the camp ground is basically across the street from Leonida's Pie shop on Highway 30. Reservations are held typically online, so advanced reservations are highly recommended to secure a spot. Of course, you can drive up and see if there are any openings the day of arrival if you didn't reserve a spot. My experience with car camping was basically trying to sleep in a rental car. It wasn't really comfortable and you have a small enough space to try to get comfortable enough to fall asleep. I'm glad that they do have quiet times after 10pm and everyone usually goes to sleep. For the most part though, you have traditional camping and cabin renting, and the car camping. While you do save a lot of money on hotel accommodations here on Maui, it is camping plain and simple. Camping is not for everyone and hopefully for those who choose the camping route, you should know what you are in for. Maybe next time, I'll check out the tentaloo's and maybe it'll be an upgrade from the rental car. It won't be a Hilton but I'll likely sleep better there than in a rental car. Camp Olawalu is a hidden gem for that alternative to traditional hotels and airbnbs. Just know what you're getting yourself info before reserving a camp site. They have parking of course. Best to have a rental car since I don't think the Maui Bus does not make a stop here. I could be wrong. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. Stayed here 4/6/22-4/15/22 and had a great experience. Facilities are clean, hot showers and the grounds are beautiful. I tent camped and the sites could use more grass and shade but I didn't spend much time at my tent anyway. Staff was nice and helpful. I'm guessing all the negative comments regarding staff are from rude demanding people who think they are checking into the Hilton. This was my first time camping in Maui rather than getting a condo and will most certainly be camping here again. read more

KAYAK RENTAL REVIEW ONLY - we were looking for an extra kayak for friends to rent so we could all go out whale watching together and tried a number of places but they were expensive and hard to get the kayaks to Olowalu. I called Camp Olowalu to enquire about tours initially but they told me we could rent a kayak from them for $20 per hour, first come first served, after 8.30am. Yay! They have parking available, and you take off straight from the beach, after you show Hawaiian ID. Great deal and great way to spend a few hours early morning with the whales. Camp Olowalu also does whale watching and snorkeling kayak tours and they are quite a bit cheaper than other outfits so if you want company and an experienced guide this is the way to do it. BTW we put our go pro into the water and recorded some amazing whale singing so whether you kayak on your own or on a tour make sure you take a waterproof camera and a go pro for some amazing sights and sounds to remember you visit ;) read more

Camp Olowalu was practically a lifechanging experience for my family. We (myself, wife and two small children) stayed in a family tentalow (tentalow 19) from the 12th to the 16th and have nothing but positive things to say. The grounds themselves are METICULOUSLY maintained. Clean and beautiful, with a great view of mountains and a somewhat rocky beach just steps away. My tips: - You're on Maui, there are chickens EVERYWHERE all over the island. Camp Olowalu is no exception. They do make noise, but it was never enough to wake anyone up. It's just part of the experience. - If you want to swim, head north less than a mile for a much softer beach. - The general store is WONDERFUL! The prices are not bad and the food is amazing. Banana bread, Moco Loco (trust me!), Spam sushi (HEAR ME OUT!!) and lots of cute gifts - I never once had to go to the check in booth, but I waved and said hello to every d*** person that worked there and they all seemed cool. There are lockable safes in every tentalow, but if you're at a campsite, don't be dumb and leave your stuff out - take it with you. - There are fruit trees! I wasn't sure if we were allowed to pick fruit from the trees, so we only grabbed a couple of windfalls that had just fallen on the ground - Please please please have fun there. Don't treat it like a resort where you have to tip toe around and whisper. One thing that made me a little sad is that we were the only tentalow that lit a fire in the fire pit and roasted marshmallows. We were the only tentalow that grilled in the grills and we were the only people in the camp singing. The largest (6 people) tentalows are still only $195 a night with free parking, a private outdoor shower (I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH!!!) and your own assigned bathroom. I will always stay here when in Maui and I thank the people that run the camp for creating such a magical place! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed staying here. The Tentalow is better than expected and the private out door showers is a bonus. It's not a 5 star resort so don't come with that expectation, but it was a perfect place to relax and rewind after busy days on the water. I did purchase a cheap mattress pad at Walmart on our way in, but not sure I really needed it. The little shop with coffee is nice if you don't bring your own, and Leoda's is right across the street for delicious food and pies! read more

A friend of mine recommended that I stay here on my trip to Maui, and I am so glad that I took his advice. As a solo female traveler, I felt completely comfortable, and at home in my glamorous tentalow. As a visitor to the island, I didn't want to go through the hassle of purchasing a tent and all of the other camping necessities, so a tentalow was the way to go. For $90 a night you get two twin beds (comprised of wooden frames, and foam mattresses), clean sheets, pillows, and towels, a large cooler to keep your food and beers cold, and the BEST PART... a private outdoor shower, sink and mirror. Taking a shower without a roof, and having the backdrop of the gorgeous Hawaiian mountains was an experience that no other ritzy resort here can offer. Take a night shower under the bright, unhindered Polynesian stars. You won't regret it. The toilets were great as well and there was one close by each tentalow. They are shared, but well-maintained, and single stall, with plumbing (not porta-potty style). Attached to each tentalow is a nice wooden porch with two Adirondack chairs perfect for relaxing with coffee in the morning. You will likely be greeted by a friendly, but talkative rooster. Cock-a-doodle-doo! The beach is nice, but small, and there is a kayak rental on the property if you are inclined to venture out into the water. Located near the heart of downtown Lahaina, Olowalu is only a $17 Uber ride away if you want to indulge in some adult beverages. You should. It's fun. The general store and a large fruit stand is also across the street from the entrance of camp for your everyday needs. Ice for your cooler is cheaper here. Aloha! read more

Beach side camping, and glamping. Prices vary from affordable ($25 per person camping) to ($140 per tentaloo glamping). Completed with hot showers, multiple picnic tables, beach access. Check in is at 2pm, Check out is around 10-11am. There is no one at the front office after 6pm, however the camp ground is always tended to by someone. Safe place, haven't had anything taken or missing. Will definitely bring the family here next time :) read more

Such a cute place with adorable tentalows. Unfortunately, it was just a little too hot during our stay for this to be a completely comfortable option. But the experience was still worth it... being able to sit in the Adirondack chairs on your porch and look up at a blanket of stars, enjoying a BBQ right outside your tentalow, and savoring a nice outdoor private shower while soaking in the sun. First, some tips on which tentalows to choose if you stay here. - You need to make reservations online beforehand. The weekend slots were fully booked but there was probably over 50% capacity when we stayed over during a weekday. - We stayed in tentalow #6 that was tucked away. But if you want ocean views from your porch, go with #5 or #15. - If you stay closer to the check-in office, you get more privacy since it's further away from the tent campgrounds. (Camp Olowalu has cabins, tentalows, tent sites, and camper van sites.) Also, since, there's only wifi at the check-in office, you're close enough to be able to connect to it. So #5 would probably be the best option. Comparing the tentalows to the tent sites, the tentalows run about $100+/night but include linens, towels, private showers, and of course, an actual structure to sleep in. Bathrooms are shared but only with 2 or so other tentalows. They are also kept very clean and are extremely well-maintained, unlike state camp sites. Tent sites are $20-30/night. BYO tent. The site provides shared showers and bathrooms and a patch of gravel to pitch your tent. The tent sites are currently mostly in direct sunlight with very little shade. The campsite was impacted by Hurricane Lane last year, so they are still fixing up the site. That may explain some of the negative experience by other Yelpers with the construction going on. There were plants, but not enough to provide good shade. A notice mentioned that they are working on replanting. Overall, a memorable experience. The only things on my wishlist for the future are: - Fans- if it's in the middle of summer, it gets too stuffy even with the window vents open. There's just very little breeze that goes through the tentalow. - Velcro or snap closures for the screen instead of a zipper. The zipper was solid but just a little annoying to zip up and down each time you wanted to leave your tentalow. - Better noise proofing. The tentalows are not too far from the highway so you hear cars driving by all night. One night, somebody was having a party (I'm pretty sure off of the campsite), and you could hear the music in our tentalow. read more

Overall I had a pretty decent vacation here. The grounds are gorgeous, the beach access is lovely and the morning views are very beautiful. The front office people were very friendly to me for my entire stay. I very highly recommend the kayak/snorkeling tour!! So fun! I had rented an SUV turned car camper, but wasn't able to reserve a car camping space since they were booked. The only thing left was a single tentalow for the two nights I needed. It looked gorgeous and picturesque in the daytime. At night, however, all of the cockroaches came out and were all over the grounds. They were crawling around inside the tentalow (very easy for all kinds of pests to get in there). Honestly, it doesn't mean anything negative at all that there were cockroaches. That's just the nature of being in a tropical climate. If they don't bug you (ha!) then go for a tentalow! The private showers were so nice! Though the nearby freeway is very noisy at night. You also constantly feel wet or damp at night because of the moisture from the rain/humidity. That was a bit bothersome. I couldn't do it the second night thought. It was the moment a cockroach scurried up the side of the canvas wall, RIGHT next to my bed, that did it for me. I packed up my stuff and went and slept in my camper car in the parking lot, lol. I honestly would stay here again if I stayed in the car camping lot. It was very beautiful. Never again for the tentalows though read more

Camp Olowalu is, hands down, the best place to stay on Maui. The amenities are incredible... shower in the open air with sun on your face? Yes please. You have privacy where and when you want it, common areas to meet other fellow travelers, and fire pits and grills to cook and light the night. Lauren, who works at the front desk, is easily the most kind and professional person we have ever dealt with in the hundreds of places we have stayed during our travels. She helped finding our spot, making sure we were comfortable, and gave us valuable local insight to the surrounding area and activities. Camp Olowalu became our home away from home because of her. We will always recommend this place to anyone considering visiting Maui because of our experience, and would not consider any other place to hang our hats when we eventually return to this perfect and peaceful piece of paradise. Olowalu Tentalow Review! We stayed in a 2-person tentalow Friday to Sunday a couple weeks ago. It was our first time and we really enjoyed it! We were very impressed with our tentalow, the entire structure of which is raised on a wood platform. We pushed our beds together and had a good space around the bed. Tucked under the bed is a large cooler, and a tub which has provided bedding and towels. There's also a large storage chest which you could lock gear up in if you brought a lock, and a small safe box inside the trunk. The back of the tentalow has a spacious Japanese-style bathroom with sink in front part, and shower which drains below. You can exit the rear of the tentalow which also has a latch-lock. At night the canvas-sided tentalow seals up pretty tight, the front has a heavy duty zipper, a screen zipper, and a layer that buttons up. Another zipper seals off the sleeping area from the bathroom area. We started getting some weather the second night - some high winds and some rain, cooler than usual temperatures - and felt cozy and secure in our tentalow. In case of cooler temperatures we might recommend an extra blanket but we were aok, and the beds were comfy for sleeping. The large Adirondack chairs in front are treat for lounging. Bathrooms (tolilets) are closeby and really nice, all have flush toilets, sink, mirror, soap, paper towels, and lights and locks. An Olowalu Tentalow is the best deal on Maui, you won't be disappointed! read more

Looking for a cute place to camp? Better go back in time cuz all those sweet trees and wonderful wilderness feeling campsites of a few years back are NO MORE Unbelievable nose dive from cute to disgusting... and they still have the audacity to charge full price! A few years ago we had the most amazing time at this campground nestled under trees in a natural 'cup de sac' we drove up into. It was gorgeous, shaded, and full of the magic of an old forest grove. We could drive right up, had a table, a site number, and space from your neighbors. I recall it being 'a bit pricey' in my mind at about $30 but it was like a place out of time it was so charming. So upon being invited to a wedding at Olowalu Plantation House, we thought a sweet night under the trees would be perfect. Walk along the beach to the wedding and no drive home. We only hoped to get a spot! We arrived to a closed check in window but the gal arrived shortly with a smile. We mentioned our sweet stay a couple years ago and she said 'things have changed a bit' and shows us on the map where the current RV parking spots were. We were dressed for a wedding So when we arrived at our 'campsite'... or rather as she put it ..... 'RV parking' I was so stunned I could not believe my eyes... $40.... for THIS??!?!!? I went back up to the smiling check in gal and said 'you have sent us to a disgusting dirt construction parking lot.... is that the 'RV parking' site we paid for? I know opinions differ, but I will let YOU decide if this campground has so many 'amenities' you feel comfortable paying full price for a place completely and utterly under full construction.... Yeah, as I found out, the entire place is disgusting and they cut every tree down.... clear cut but for the dead trees on the beach complete with unpicked up trash... I took pictures because you just can't BELIEVE a business would treat folks like this.... they give our beautiful Maui a bad name with its high price dirt pit and lack of Aloha... YOU decide... My GF and I rented a van to visit all the island of Maui, our frist and last stop was at Camp Olowalu and it is BY FAR our favorite camping in all Maui. The girl at the reception (im so sorry I forgot her name) is very helpful, polite and professional! We rented the car parking for 50$ a night, you simply drive next to the check in and there you are! Park wherever you want and enjoy! There is alot of clean bathrooms with toilet, sink and mirrors. You also have some very clean showers with a lot of pressure and hot water! We rented the car parking but I saw some tent area that looked very and I think there are "ready to camp tents" that are already there and ready to get in and sleep. All of that right next to the ocean! I highly recommend!! read more

Such a great spot! Clean bathrooms, open air showers that generally have hot water, free Hawaiian coffee in the morning (get it while it's hot), WiFi at the office, and charging stations. You can go snorkeling or kayaking right off the beach and may even see some whales breaching from the shore. There's some traffic noise from the highway, but there's also the sound of the ocean at night...this is where selective hearing comes in . Try to put your tent on high ground, it can rain suddenly and sometimes heavily, the ground there isn't super absorbent and low spots tend to turn into lakes. After reading through some of the other reviews, I feel compelled to mention a few things. - Yes, the sites are small/close quarters...but it's car camping. If you want to be remote, get out your hiking boots. - Yes, the roosters are loud in the morning and sometimes through the night; it's Hawaii, they live here. - Yes, it's dark at night- cuz ya know...less sun at night. It may be car camping, but it's still camping; bring gear. read more

Clean and well-maintained. Flush toilets, good showers (NOT hot, but tolerable). They have a security gate and we had no problem with anything in the three days we were there. Staff was nice. This is a great alternative to Maui hotels which are super expensive. I recommend the tent sites or the tentalows. The car camping sites are right next to each other and offer no privacy. It's on a rocky shoreline, not really a beach, but it's great to unzip your tent and walk into the water anytime you like for a swim or snorkel. We saw lots of fish and sea turtles. Small store and restaurant right across the street. Definitely recommend this place if you like to camp or don't like spending $300+ a night on accommodations. Recommend tent sites 1, 3, etc. as they are on the end and further from the crowd. Like most of Hawaii there are feral roosters and hens so bring earplugs if the cock-a-doodle-dos wake you up. She refused to help find a stolen phone, despite having a security camera at the charging station. "We're not responsible for any lost items." They won't bother lifting a finger for you. read more

Really enjoyed staying here. Very peaceful, especially during the day when most of the campers head out to explore the island. I van-camped, and to have clean showers/bathrooms and a safe place to park for $20 a night was great! The tentalows looked really nice, and the cabins are a great option also. There's some decent beach access spots, and some nice shade trees as well. If you want to view the sunset, just walk (or drive) to Olowalu landing which is through the first gate on your right as you head down the driveway from the main road. And pay a visit to Leoda's Pie Shop across the highway, just be careful crossing the road, it's very dangerous on foot so take your car. It would be nice to have electrical hookups in the RV area. And be aware that it gets dusty when people drive in too fast. This is a great way to visit Maui if you're on a budget! read more

There is one factor that will determine whether you have a 5 star experience here or a 1 star. That is why I gave it a 3. That factor is whether or not you have to deal with the lady that works the "customer service" desk. If you have to deal with her just realize that she does not GAF about you at all. If you were on fire.....you know the rest. I would reconsider having a person like that help and greet customers. My husband and I rented a tentalow and my Mother and son were in a tentalow next door. The customer service lady was initially very indifferent toward us but, at that point, no problems. That night, however, there was no light whatsoever in my Mom and son's tent. This place is actually quite dark at night and there were no porch lights or internal lights and no lanterns. It was our first day so we all just retired early and then the next morning went to deal with the issue. Thats when I realized that "meh, I really don't care" is the attitude of the lady at the front desk. In response to us informing her that there were no lights, and asking for help, she told us that there was a number posted on the wall that we were supposed to call. She never offered to call maintenance on our behalf, expressed no care or concern that we had no lights. She offered no help, no solutions. It was, honestly, very off-putting. I asked her she had any lanterns or anything to provide light and she said no. Well, we returned to the tent and called the maintenance number. That guy was very nice, and by the way, does have lanterns, so that was cool. He fixed the solar lights in the tent. He told us they were updating the lighting, and some of the other tents were lit well. Our tentalows were 11 and 12. They were not upgraded yet. The grounds are beautiful, the tents are very cool, I would stay there again. I enjoyed the overall experience. It is so relaxing to hang out in the beautiful scenery with the chickens, camp cats and BBQ and listen to music (bring a portable speaker!) However, there are some very simple things the camp could offer or provide (besides a customer service person that treats you like a human being and not like she is bothered that you breathe.) that would make this a way better "glamping" experience. If you are coming over and staying here realize that it needs: 1. Better outdoor and indoor lighting. (Ask maintenance for a lantern even if you have lights, it makes a big difference in the evening) 2. To rent or provide BBQ utensils (some people are travelling from the mainland) We had to purchase tongs, a sharp knife and a spatula. 3. Rent or provide beach towels. 4. A washer/dryer. The closest laundry is in Lahaina. 5. Coffee or someway to make it!!!! BTW the general store across the street is amazing and the people there are very freindly, nice and restored my faith in humanity. And they have coffee, yay! read more

A lot of what Camp Olowalu is doing is awesome. The layout of the area is great and the grounds are well-maintained with picnic tables and a beautiful beach. Our tentalow was such a nice option for a lower-cost break from hotels when regular camping was still not allowed on much of the island. Felt safe and secure leaving our stuff in the car or in the tentalow A couple of small knocks, but nothing that would keep us from staying there again. We were there Fri and Sat nights, and there were a couple of large groups partying late into the night after quiet hours. They didn't keep us up, but we had been hoping for a quiet, fall-asleep-to-the-sound-of-the-ocean kind of night. Everything runs on solar, which is awesome! Just make sure to take a flashlight to the bathroom at night, in case someone has forgotten to turn the light off when they leave. read more

I just got home from camp olowalu. We stayed for Two nights. The grounds are beautiful. I could not believe the work that they put into it. So this is why I Was disappointed... . Front desk girl was rude and go into it with my friend. The tentalow fabric tops like paper. The tentalow is big. There is a sink in the back... I have no idea why they would not put a toilet in. First night we had a crackhead woman that would come over and talk and talk and talk. She was throwing chicken bones to my 8 week old puppy and wouldn't listen when I told her to stop. We went to the front desk and asked to find a new spot. The girls were so annoyed and it was terrible customer service. The next night there was a full on party with about 20 people in a circle banging drums til about 2am. We slept awful. I had two friends come in and they had to it $10 a piece. How did all of these people get in when someone supposedly lives on property to watch it. When I told front desk they Were just like "oh." Such bad customer service seriously! Oh and In front of each tentalow there is a ton of mud. So have fun with that. I won't go back. read more

This place is OUTSTANDING! We stayed for 2 nights in May in one of the Tentalows. The Tentalows are big airy safari style tents with a private sink and private outdoor shower. Camp Olowalu provides all bedding, towels, etc. There is also a big cooler under the bed if you plan to cook on site using one of the grills. Each tentalow also has a beautiful front patio looking out at the grounds with comfortable deck chairs. I was a bit concerned about the shared bathroom situation because of COVID but the open air restroom is only shared with you and one other Tentalow, and have a special key to access. They are very nice bathrooms and cleaned daily. The grounds are gorgeous, the photos do not do the place justice. The driveway leading up to the campsite is perfectly manicured and has a security gate you pass through to enter. The Tentalows are spaced out and staggered so you feel like you have privacy, and each is less than 100 yards to the ocean. The grounds are lush and well maintained, complete with large fruit trees everywhere! There are lots of roosters, hens, and baby chicks running around. During the day you can rent kayaks, go to the beach, read etc. At night you can use the fire pits, bbq, listen to the ocean and star gaze! There is not a full kitchen available, so we went to the General Store just up the road and bought coffee, fresh baked banana bread, and spam masubi each morning. There is also shaved ice and a fresh fruit juice stand. The best part is the general store opens at 5am, which is really nice for people dealing with a time change. The only things I'd change would be to add a hot water heater at the kitchen station so people can make their own coffee. Additionally, having beach towels for free or to rent would be great as well. Finally, check the wind forecast and pack ear plugs because it can get VERY loud at night in the tent when it's windy. If you're coming to Maui, this place is a must visit. This place was great! The tentalow was perfect as I had a shower and my own sink, and two twin beds, it was just me on a solo trip though. I had a deck with two chairs as well which was great for just chilling at night on before heading to bed. The campground is also located at a beach, which you have access to. It's about 10-15 minutes from Lahaina, and the entrance to the campground is right across the street from a pie shop and a general store. The price was great, the weather was perfect day and night, and there was a nice little surprise of chickens running free. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone! read more

I don't write reviews but decided for this. The campground was nice. We camped in our jeep with a pop up tent. When booking it kept showing the vehicle camping spots we all fully booked but one spot magically appeared so we booked. The campsite is really clean and nice (showers/bathrooms) however here is my issue: the Hawaiian local looking girls (late teens or early 20's) were super rude and didn't give a sh*t. When we arrived for checkin (website says 2pm and we arrived at 5) I went to our spot that was assigned and noticed that our Thule pop up tent would not fit in the space assigned. I also noticed about 5 or 6 parking spots were roped off (these were larger spots as well.) I walked back up to the checkin office and explained that our jeep and tent don't fit and I also provided the measurements when booking for the size could we be moved to a larger spot. (There were only 3 other vehicles - including ourselves) with attitude and annoyance she was like well there are no other spots. I explained that we provided the vehicle measurements when booking could we be moved to any of the open spots that were larger (not roped off) and she said no bc what if people arrive after hours that is their spot. Ok fair, so I asked about one of the 5 roped off spots that are clearly larger. She said no because those spots are for emergencies. I then inquired as to what type of an emergency would need 5 large spots roped off and she proceed to say bc of wind and the people camping in tents...ok also fair...but how about my spot #10 could be use for an emergency and we could use the larger spot. Rolled her eyes and got up and the other girl was like "I don't care it's your decision" and said fine you can have the spot that's in the corner. So we moved. The next morning around 8:15 the office says it sells cold drinks and snacks and coffee...I walked in to purchase coffee and it's nothing but a gift shop of typical Hawaiian stuff you see all over the island (nothing useful for people camping) and not what the checkin sign says. The was this metal coffee machine that I guess was free coffee for the campground people staying (it was empty) so I walked over to the checkin in office and since you can't see in the window due to reflection I walked to the front window and as I walked up to the window the girl was rolling her eyes and directing me to the side window. I asked about coffee and she said there is no more (and literally that's all she said) - so we walked to a local convenient store like 5-7 mins away not far and got coffee no big deal. I would say that facility is nice (for vehicle camping) but the staff is super rude. Not sure if it's locals working but don't appreciate the unfriendliness and 0 help. There are sooo many camping places on the island - go elsewhere. read more

Don't bother, unless you go on vacation to be irritated. It's 11:25 PM, almost two hours after quiet hours ends, and very loud music is still playing, people are shouting and screaming, dogs are barking, and no one from site management either cares or is even here to address it. If you like going on vacation to be a scold, walking around telling people to quiet down and respect the rules, then this is the place for you! What a shame as this had potential... Another highlight: multiple drunk people opening your "tentalow" and coming all the way inside before they realized it is occupied or not theirs. Definitely a pleasant thing to which to awaken. Had tickets for the Haleakala sunrise tomorrow, but will not be able to use them. Thanks for ruining a key part of my visit, lousy guests and Camp Olowalu! read more

Spent my first night in Maui at a dump of a hotel and paid 200! Stayed here for 2 nights for 40$ and wish I stayed here my whole trip! As a solo female camper I loved the set up and the grounds! Gelato safe and welcomed. Ignore all the reviews about the noise, roosters and not enough shade - you are camping and I can't imagine camping at a more beautiful spot! All the complainers go spend tons of money at the resorts and leave the spots open for the campers who appreciate sleeping under the stars!! I'll be back! read more

This place had absolutely everything I could ever hope for in a campground. There were VERY clean bathrooms, showers, free wifi, and a beach no more than 100 yards from my tent site.
