My group stayed across three villa units and one tower unit for a week. Highlights included: a stellar location, great pools, solid cocktails at dukes, and great beach access. Also love keypad entry so you don't have to remember your keys all the time esp when at beach or pool. Love the outdoor grills and beer fridges on the villa balconies. Areas of feedback for the property: We found many of the units to have been in mediocre condition and poorly maintained. Two units have broken a/c's and a third was just barely strong enough. Also had WiFi issues, broken bbq lids, non operational patio fans, broken dishwashers. In the common areas, the gym has a decent set of weight equipment, but is comically small, almost infuriatingly and dangerously so. Every morning and every evening before dinner it was just so packed, you could barely do your sets without bumping into somebody at the machine next to you To add to that, the gym's air conditioning was broken all week (who knows how long before that?) which added to the discomfort. I'm a pretty easy-going traveler and have no problem when a couple of these happen from time to time but seeing them all occur is a clear sign of poor management by the ownership. My TLDR here is it's a good property, but shows extremely poor management and excessive cost cutting, and ultimately becomes a subpar product until that's addressed. read more

We stayed at the Outrigger Honua Kai Resort in the Konea Tower, and I'm giving it 4/5 stars. After booking through Hopper, we had a strange start because we had to check in at a different tower, the drive back to our tower. once we got that sorted, check-in was smooth. The free valet was fantastic, and the room was spacious, clean, and had a gorgeous ocean view. We had an issue with our mattress and it was never comfortable. That was the big bummer of the stay. They replaced our mattress after we said something but it didn't fix the issue. When we laid down, we always felt like where laying way back like toward the headboard, feet higher than our head. It may have been a bed frame issue. It wasn't the worst, we just ended sleeping the other way. You have to call housekeeping to get service. That was super easy and they did a great job. All staff on site were wonderful. The grounds were well-kept, and we loved spending time by the pool--there were a few different pools, each with its own unique feel. Surprisingly, we went down the slide several times (haha it's not just for kids). Duke's on the property was a big plus. They had servers taking orders pool side. The food trucks nearby were fantastic, dealing distance away, and so much variety. they're open u til 8pm. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would definitely come back. read more

The Honua Kai Resort holds such a special place in my heart. This is where my husband and I stayed when he proposed to me in Dec 2019. We were taking photos on the property and then he bent the knee on the beach. Honestly, we had such a great time the first time we were here that we returned for our, super late due to Covid, Honeymoon last month. I love the size and location of the property. From the pools, amenities and the gorgeous view. The rooms are condos that come with kitchens, laundry and balconies. The first time we stayed we did a one bedroom partial ocean, but this time around we did a studio and enjoyed the full ocean view. The staff have spoiled us with some sweet congrats cookies that we really enjoyed. This property also has a Dukes on site which is super convenient. They do get busy though so we've just ordered to-go and enjoyed our food on the balcony. One thing I wish this hotel did have would be a cafe, or some kind of coffee on site. There's a market in the other tower, but the building we stayed in has one under construction. I'm hoping they put a coffee spot because it would be perfect! We love the location and feel when we come here and the included parking is a HUGE plus! I couldn't recommend the Honua Kai more and we look forward to more visits here in the future. read more

***This review is for a 2 bedroom ocean view balcony.*** Pleasantly surprised! Straight to it - I had read many of the Yelp reviews prior to coming, and I was worried about the roaches in the rooms so I came prepared with the roach sticky traps, and thankfully, we didn't have any! The room really did have all of the essentials, from kitchen items to beach equipment, it really did make things easy. Our family had 3 condos, so it was interesting to see that all condos had different items, so just a heads up that it really does depend on the unit. For example, the TV's were all different (old and new), beach equipment in only our unit, mattresses (some softer and some firm). As you can see in one of the pics, the headboard in our room had stains on it, which automatically threw us off. Both of our remotes in the living room and bedroom didn't have batteries, so we called the number listed in the directory and they dropped them off the next day. Overall this was a great stay and I'd definitely come back again if we had a large group like we did. read more

Just came back from a week spent here, in an airbnb unit in the Konea tower. Overall, great utilities for kids / families, and the setup is perfect if you have small children and don't want to drive in / out to pools and beaches. Pros: * Come for the pools! There are 4 (3 on the Konea side) and 1 on the other side. They are all very clean and well-labeled on how deep the water is. Plenty of shallow wading areas for babies, and a sprinkler area. There is a water slide that my kids probably went on 50 times. For the grownups there are also multiple hot tubs - no crowding with strangers! * cute (vaccinated) cats roaming the property as part of a rescue program! * plenty of grills available for use, with seating nearby * very close access to a fairly tame beach with decently clean sand. Plenty of space for everyone to spread out and contiguous with all the other resorts' beach access. * Whaler's general Store in the lobby has reasonably priced smoothies and other drinks such as boba or iced coffee. Also a decent selection of instant food and basics. * Walkable to a shopping plaza with a supermarket, a food truck park, and up the street is an ABC Mart with prepped food (e.g. poke, rice plates, musubi, etc). * Location is fairly close to all the touristy things on the west side of Maui. Cons: * Parking is hard to get at times, and spots can be small-ish. No assigned spots for each unit. * some units are not the best maintained. We had drainage issues and a toilet sewer gas problem in ours, the door handle stopped working, and power went out a couple times for an hour or so. While everything got resolved in a few hours, the problems were sprinkled across nearly every day of my 6 day vacation - starting convos with customer support and having them barge in at any point in the next few hours / having to monitor their callbacks was not how I expected to spend my trip. To be fair, this is only representative of 1 unit's condition - I've seen the reviews for other units to be much better. read more

Perfect family resort! Our kids were endlessly entertained in the pools and spas and at the beach right on the property. We stayed in a 2 bedroom condo, the space was roomier than we expected. We comfortably fit 3 adults and 2 kids. Beds were also actually comfortable! The ocean view from our room was so beautiful and the cherry on top of the trip! Staff and front desk were all kind and helpful! We loved that Duke's is right there on the property! We ate lunch and dinner there almost every day, the food and drinks were all amazing every time! ***THIS REVIEW IS FOR ONE OF THE LUANA GARDEN VILLA IN HONUA KAI*** We had a large family group (8 people) going to Maui and decided to book a 3B/3B Luana garden villa, right next to the Konea Tower. We had a great experience! The pros: - the villa was spacious, modern, clean, and equipped with everything we needed from kitchen supplies to beach gear. - comes with a complimentary tandem garage spot right next to the villa - private pool for the villa area but also access to all the main resort pools and beach right in front of the hotel (walking distance was reasonable to the main beach ~5-6 minutes) - great pools for young kids, also a water slide - easy check in and check out process through an electronic keypad - unlimited towel access through the towel tracker machine - close to the Times Supermarket, various eateries, and food trucks - tasty food from Duke's restaurant which is right in front of the kiddie pool. They also provide food and drink service to the pool areas. The cons: - the internet was average speed and limited to certain parts of the villa - quite pricey per night ($1000-$1400/night) If you're considering a villa, I would definitely recommend booking through Maui Westside Property. Had a wonderful stay at Honua Kai. The room was clean and spacious. I really loved how you get a full kitchen and refrigerator if you decide you want to cook during your stay. A glimpse into a condo life you decide to get a condo in Maui. Free self or valet parking included (tip your valet) so you can save tons of money if you have a rental car. Dukes is basically on the property, about a 2 minute walk which was a bonus. Beach is 3 minute walk. Resident cats on the property so you might see them being fed by their handlers. The only thing that bugged me is the unit had a musty smell, which you really noticed especially coming inside the unit after being out all day which was unpleasant. read more

I am beyond thrilled with our stay here. We lucked out with a ground floor room right off the lobby, an amazing location. Everything is so beautiful, from the landscaping to the lobby to the rooms. It was awesome having a full kitchen (even a dishwasher!) and huge bathroom. There is a grocery story walking distance or a short drive away, so you can save a ton of money and cook your own meals. The pools are very nice. I wish they were warmer! There was always plenty of seating, and so many cozy little spots to hang out. The beach is fine. Not the best beach on the island by any means but it's so nice having it right there off the hotel! It's smooth and sandy but pretty steep and no shade. Bring your own umbrella and chairs if possible. Having the little store in the lobby was amazing. The prices weren't that bad for Hawaiian honestly and it was nice being able to grab snacks. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, and tell my friends to, but if you stay here for your entire trip you'll want to drive to other beaches. read more

We booked five nights through Outrigger for a three bedroom/ three bath Oceanview unit. Checking-in was very easy and friendly. The staff we encountered were all nice and friendly. My biggest concern were all the complaints of roaches on here but we only saw a couple of small ones in the kitchen. We kept our food put away and cleaned up after every meal as a precaution. Roaches are known to be prevalent in Hawaii so be prepared. Our room was clean and well stocked with towels, shampoo, conditioner, bar soaps, and lotion upon arrival. Towels were readily available in the downstairs lobby, pool area, and you can just dial 0 and request them. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed including paper towels and dish soap. Detergent and Bounce is provided for the washer and dryer. The on-site convenient store has basic items to stock your fridge or freezer such as eggs and frozen foods. We baked a frozen pizza when we were too tired to eat out one night. There is only a Duke's Beach House restaurant onsite but plenty of nearby food options outside the resort including a food truck park right next door. The front desk was always quick to respond to help us when needed. Room service is by request only but we never felt the need to use them. The pool opens at 8am and is the best time to head down during this summer. The slide was very fun for the kids. There is a very small splash pad and baby pool. The lazy river is nice but strangely does not connect all around. The grounds were very beautiful and well maintained during our stay. The beach front location is the best part. The beach is clean, beautiful, and the waves were not too rough for the kids. We were actually able to see sea turtles. I would totally recommend this resort and booking through Outrigger. read more

we only got back less than a week ago, and I've recommended this resort to more people than I can count. Absolutely beautiful grounds, the beach is just a simple walk out from the resort. I have snorkeled in multiple places.(Jamaica, the Bahamas, Mexico..). My husband has snorkeled even more places than I have, and he said the only place better than this snorkeling right outside the resort on their beach was the great barrier reef. For me, it was the best snorkeling I've seen! Please remember to only use reef safe sunscreen! in fact, with that said, I came from Reno, Nevada and I highly recommend waiting to get your sunscreen there! We stopped at Costco right after we picked up our rental cars, and their blue lizard sunscreen is $10 cheaper than our same sunscreen in Reno! We did a resort view two bedroom, and it was perfect for our family of four! The king bed in the children's room was able to be separated into two twin size beds . They provide not only a washer and dryer, but laundry soap and fabric sheet sheets. That quick Costco trip also helped us prepare some meals in the kitchen in our room rather than eating out every single meal. The only thing I didn't like was how many people reserved chairs with just towels and then never came back to them. I think people need to be a little bit more respectful of if you're not actually physically sitting in a chair then do you really need to reserve it? And that's not just if you walk over to take a dip in the pool, I watched some chairs, literally be unused for more than three hours! Don't bother with Dukes or Leilani's on the beach. Those are both very chain / could eat them anywhere type of food. Try to hit some local spots instead! I highly recommend going to farmers markets and craft fairs to get your souvenirs, rather than the gift shop downstairs. Support those people who lost their homes and businesses in the fire. There's a little food truck pod right outside of the resort that's 10 minute walking distance (max), and it provided great meals! The coffee truck in the morning has a phenomenal coconut latte . We had an issue with our washing machine leaking, and one quick call sent up maintenance and it was resolved immediately . The staff is so nice, the grounds are so beautiful! I could literally not recommend this resort enough if you have children. Oh! You can rent a boogie board, however**, I would highly recommend renting it for the week because some of the best boogie boarding is actually in the evening when the tide is starting to come in. If you only rent it for the day, it's due back at 5 PM, just when the waves are getting good for boogie boarding.. But the snorkel and fins, one day rental is perfect! I like to vacation, different places every time, but this is one case where we will definitely come back to this resort . read more

Decided on this place for our honeymoon and spent a lot of money of course. I'm a Marine vet so I really don't expect a ton, but a certain level of cleanliness should be standard. The room was not clean when we arrived. There was a pair of wet underwear in the washer, dirty countertops, sand in the shower and the shower handle was broken. The refrigerator was dirty, the silverware and plates for the kitchen were dirty. The breaker panel was shut off for the stove and oven which we were not told and ruined one of our mornings we had to hurry and spend money to get breakfast after buying groceries to make it to our rental on time. I forgot to mention when you arrive, if you are in a different building you will have to drag all your luggage to the other building with no help and poor directions about a 1/4 mile. For the room the ac needs to be manually turned on if the doors are opened and closed which again we were not told. Would be good to know these things with a simple paper instructions for the room but they don't have that. if you want to relax with no issues, this is not the place. next time we will spend some more money and stay somewhere else. this place seems like they are trying to turn over as many rooms and make as much money with the least amount of work. Ok so now that I am back home I can sit down and write my review. I must say I am impressed with this resort, it wasn't what I expected and I hope to be back in the future. Ok so note this, staying here many of the units are individually owned so any complaint I may have can't be held responsible by the resort totally. So let's get to it, I stayed at one of the condo units which was decorated very nicely and was very spacious. At first site I was way impressed. So usually when I walk in rental, hotels, air bnbs and places I stay I give it the once over. Walking in the first I noticed was the scaffolding outside the balcony. It totally blocked most of my view. That was a big downer but did not ruin my trip. They actually offered a discount per day because of it and I lived with that. Now looking around the room I found little bits of damage and things that were easy fixes that literally couldn't have been taken care of way before I booked 3 month previous. Just for the prices you pay for this place I'd think these items could be taken care of. The TV is a little dated, there are no USB ports anywhere but there are lots of plugs. The wifi was sketchy at times but it worked. I hated the bed, It did a number on my back. I went to get a massage and that didn't help at all. I slept on the couch and it was small. The pillows were almost non existent. Once again the room was pretty awesome but you can see some others had better benefits to them and were taken care of better than others. My room was the bare minimum. I saw they also have some bigger units on the site that is good for family or groups I will be trying out next time. Staff was great, actually pretty excellent, I have no complaints at all. The grounds are immaculate, the pool is beautiful and you are literally steps to the beach which I loved. I would definitely day again and would suggest anyone and everyone to stay here. Before I left I was able to walk down to the beach and tell Maui good bye, I almost dropped a tear. read more

The place was pretty good, the ocean was amazing, but the pools were really shallow, make sure to where sunscreen because we got really burnt and were miserable for a while. The service was alright, very expensive though. Good for family's. The whalers general store downstairs was pretty cool too if you need a snack or something. Honua Kai provided an incredible experience for our first visit to Maui. I appreciated knowing we were staying in the exact unit we booked, so no surprises. For a family of three, we had plenty of space in a one bedroom. We loved being able to shop for fresh fish and produce and cook in our space. We ate our meals on our patio with a gorgeous view. I loved the ease and cleanliness of everything. It was easy to text my request for a few extra pillows and blankets, which delivered promptly. The beach was steps away and the area was never too packed. It's the perfect space for families. We will absolutely return to Honua Kai when we return to Maui. read more

As far as the actual location, it is very good. As far as the hotel itself, the layout of the rooms/units is nice but we had bugs from day one. We stay 9 days 8 nights. We contacted the management, they brought up bug buttoms which did not really work. There is no daily or even weekly maid service. You can call for new towles and linens if you want to change your beds yourself (not sure this is worth what you pay for at this location). The staff is nice. The pools are to small for this hotel. There are way to many people for the size of the pools. The spa facilities were very nice and the treatments we good. read more

We left here just feeling okay. I had done a lot of research for this vacation and thought I had made a good choice. We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite which was great space but incredibly dated. The blinds were broken in the living room so opening and closing curtains to enjoy the mountain view were nearly impossible. You only get one cleaning for the whole week- despite the pricey cost of the stay. Otherwise you request things you need daily like towels, coffee, etc. Our AC didn't work in half of the unit (the master the entire stay except for one night). They came and fixed a reset something and that fixed only last a day. It was on the master side so we really struggled to sleep. The stocked kitchen is quite the joke. All the dishes in the cabinets were dirty when we arrived. They are also very old. The pots aren't safe as they are all scraped and releasing toxins and same with the cooking utensils. Very limited drink service at the pool. Definitely best to bring your own drinks. The beach here isn't great for kids. Our kids are 12 and didn't love it. I was pretty rough at times with a pretty strong undertow. Highly recommend water shoes as there is a lot of rocks in the area. Best to drive around though and find other places for swimming. The grounds are pretty and well kept. The spa is super dated and definitely offers no type of typical spa experience but I did have a fabulous massage here with Kitera. Also on our second night, we had issues sleeping as people were running laps upstairs and it literally sounded like it was in our room. After 3 hours we finally called security and they helped remedy the situation which we were grateful for but just a reminder that if anyone is above you will hear a lot. We were also right beside the elevator the whole time so that didn't help with sleep either. Overall, we paid a lot of $$$ for very subpar accommodations and experience. Do your research. read more

My husband & I were there for two weeks; it was our second stay. Unfortunately, it will be our last due to the fact that it is almost impossible to find a place to sit by the pool. As a result, guests are quite ruthless in "reserving" seats early in the day, even when they're not using the pools. Of course, there are cabanas and casabellas to rent for $300/$350 or $65 respectively, half of which are unoccupied at any given time. Another thing to consider: it's a fun place for families but not great for anyone else, who minds having to dodge footballs and frisbees being thrown around in the pool. While there is a "quiet" pool, it is small and, once again, there is no place place to sit. read more

My wife and I stayed in Honua Kai for 4 days and 4 nights, and while the property, beach and pool were gorgeous and conveniently placed, each day we experienced another hurdle with little help from the staff. We stayed in the North Tour (Konua) which is the tower opposite of where the front desk is (which is located in the South tower.) Calling the front desk from our room was useless at any given time, as no one picked up. On our second day, I had to go to the front desk 3 times alone to get new towels delivered, which meant walking from building to building to speak with someone. From our room on the 10th floor to the lobby in the other building, it was about a 10 minute trip each way. On our second day, power went out in our building for a few hours with no updates from the staff. On our third day, our key pad to get into our room stopped working, so again, I had to walk to the front desk in the other building to have them reset the box. Asking staff in our building with any of our issues did not result in any solutions, and I was referred to the other building each time. Overall, Honua Kai is a beautiful resort right on the water with convenient dining all around it. However, due to the many issues we experienced during our short time there and the little resolution from the staff, we will not be returning. read more

I'll never ignore reviews again. I made a big mistake booking here. First, the good. Our room was decent. It was a studio on an upper floor. It had a beautiful balcony and full kitchen, but there is a smell - more on that later. Bell services and the valet staff - while clearly over worked and under staffed, were wonderful. I saw other posts about the parking situation but what ever room I booked comes with valet, so that's been helpful. Now, the bad. And it's bad. The hotel is undergoing major renovations and none of that was mentioned when I booked this room. There is scaffolding all over the rooms to the right of us, and drilling would begin promptly at 7am every day. There are two massive cranes parked in the courtyard. I realize this has to happen for refurbishments, but nowhere was this mentioned and we certainly weren't given a discount Every sunset photo I take, every time I try to take a video of the ocean - there's the, you know, huge orange cranes. The phone to the front desk was broken and the staff refuse to address it. We had a situation where the room below us was having a party. During the sunset while there was peaceful live Hawaiian music coming from Dukes, the people below us were blaring music and singing along loudly on their balcony so the entire hotel could hear only that. A lot of the songs were inappropriate for kiddos too, to the point that people were yelling at them from other balconies to please turn it down. I called and called the front desk, when I finally just walked down, three employees were just standing there. I mentioned I had been calling and had even called the main line from my cell phone and they looked puzzled. They also claimed they would phone that room - they didn't. The loud music continued. Also, the fire alarm. Yes, at 3am, the fire alarm went off repeatedly. They said it was all clear, then it went off again. I'm guessing it had something to do with the construction, or the party below us. (Edit to add, apparently a water main broke on the third floor, and those people had to move rooms.) Finally, the stench of mildew in our room. It's bad enough that it kept me awake. We moved hotels eventually and all of our belongings smelled like the room. We're going to have to wash everything thoroughly when we get home. It's hard to be in a place that clearly has so much potential but the service level and construction makes it a solid zero. I didn't even want to be there. The irony is these are individually owned condos. I looked up the purchase prices and we're talking millions...do the owners in the vacation program know how badly this place is run? Next time I'll stay next door at the Westin. read more

Our most recent stay at Honua Kai was a complete disappointment. We've stayed 3 of the past 4 years and it's become clear things have gone downhill. We encountered a series of problems during this visit that made our stay less than pleasant. First, we were assigned to a room that ended up being infested with BUGS/roaches (not just talking one or two, but several). After informing the front desk, we were assigned to another room, however, our problems didn't end there. For the next few days, a large crane they were using for painting the hotel blocked our ocean view balcony, making it less than ideal to enjoy the view we paid for (and there was not ONE single mention that this work would be happening before our visit). Not only was this a major inconvenience for the price we paid, but the constant noise from the crane was also a burden for relaxing outside. I should also note that in transit to our 2nd room, the hotel's power went out (almost leaving my family and I stranded in the elevator - luckily we walked out seconds before it cut). And to boot, the ceiling in the hallway caved in! Some quality concerns going on here... When I brought up our concerns to the hotel staff manager following our check-out, she seemed reluctant to want to "make things right" in the spirit of what I would say should have been good hospitality. Instead she was combative to the issues I raised and only offered to discount the room by a measly $65 a night. Overall, our experience at Honua Kai was a complete disappointment. The bugs in our first room, followed by the crane blocking our balcony for several days, made our stay far from enjoyable. We were deeply disappointed with the lack of concern and attention from the hotel staff. We cannot recommend this hotel to anyone at this point. read more

We checked into Konea 214 and it was stunning. We booked thru Maui Resort Rentals. These are individually owned condos managed by various different companies. The website had current photos and after reading about worn carpet, we chose Konea 214 because it had beautiful porcelain tile wood floors. Maui Resort Rentals provided us with easy check in instructions. If we need anything, we just called and they delivered. The King bed was super comfy with an upgraded mattress. There is a Queen pullout sofa in the Living room. The furniture was new. The kitchen was fully stocked so we could cook our meals. They even provided a Vitamix! There is a full size washer and dryer as well. The unit came with two flat screen TV's and high speed fiber! The lanai is much larger than most at about 290 sq ft. We enjoyed the super nice lounge chairs. There is a nano door that opens fully, and it's super cool!!! There is a waterfall below and it's very peaceful and soothing. We frequently ate breakfast on the lanai. We were going to rent beach chairs, umbrellas and coolers, but were pleased to find this unit came with them free of charge! Score! And the unit was stocked with new BBQ tools! Maui Resort Rentals was always a phone call away. We requested Windex, toilet paper, etc. They delivered it to our room. Please note, this is a condo, so if you want daily housekeeping, you can pay extra for it. We were happy to wipe our counters off and dump our own garbage daily. There is a broom and dustpan in the unit. There were many pools to choose from as well as hot tubs. We sat on the beach a watched the sunset most nights. Dukes is onsite and they have a pickup window, so we could bring it up our room or eat on the beach. The wait staff delivered food and drinks for those seated by the pools. Towels were located all over the resort and we accessed them easily from the machines. The folks who rented from Outrigger had to stand in line at the front desk in the Hokulani tower to get towels. We had met others at the pools and hot tubs who rented from other management companies. They certainly weren't treated like royalty like we were. I read Maui Resort Rentals has Marriott, Montage and Four Seasons trained staff. Huge difference! I would also make sure to note the various reviews, unit numbers, management company, etc. As some owners and managers may be more money oriented instead of interested in providing a wonderful experience. We booked this upgraded unit and it was way better than we expected! I would highly recommend Honua Kai Konea 214!!! We are going back in February 2023! Love, love, love!!!! read more

This is the third time that we stayed at Honua Kai. I am afraid that it has lost its charm, customer service and hospitality. The disappointment started with our front desk encounter. The person who checked us in never even tried to pronounce our name nor ask me how it was pronounced. She proceeded to call me Mrs. Janet. Our room was a great disappointment. When we had stayed there before, we had a one bedroom that was spacious and the bathroom was large with a walk-in shower. This time, we had a bathroom that was so small that we had to keep some of our things on the kitchen counter and we had a tub shower. I immediately went down to the front desk to complain and try to get our room switched. I was told that it couldn't be done that evening and that only the manager had the ability to do it and she didn't come in until after 9am the next morning. I was also told that there would be an up-charge. The lighting in the room was awful. The lights in the bathroom weren't bright enough to comb hair, put on makeup or shave. The furniture was old and tired. The counter on the island had big chips of granite missing. The suite didn't have a full length mirror in the whole place. There weren't any clocks in the room other than on the appliances. There weren't any manuals for the appliances so google became my friend as I kept trying to find out how to use them. The TV did not have any access to stream from any of the popular streaming services. You might say, why didn't I use my computer. I opted not to take a computer with me on vacation. We decided to have a massage at the spa. OMG!! It was not a great massage and it was super expensive. The people were nice, but definitely not worth the price we paid. And the concierge was useless. When we asked about getting a reservation for dinner, she looked on OpenTable. I can do that myself. In all of my years of personal and business travel I never had a concierge that was not able to get dinner reservations. I will give kudos to the valets. They were extremely helpful and always had a great big smile as they brought or took the car. I would also like to mention that our waiter at Dukes (Branden) was amazing. He was friendly and helpful. He explained to us how everything that we were thinking of eating was prepared and made wonderful suggestions. BTW, the hula pie was to die for!! Lastly I would like to recognize Lile at the front desk when we checked out. She was kind and caring and Maui and the resort were overcrowded, expensive and was not enjoyable at all. We have been to Maui at least 6 times and this visit caused us to determine that it isn't a special place any more. read more

After booking our flights we went to Costco and VRBO to look for accommodations. We ended up finding them cheaper on Mau Resort Rentals. We had a one bedroom (unit 213) which was plenty of room for two adults and a four year old. The room had a full kitchen, small laundry room, a spacious bathroom and a large lanai. It also included a couple of beach chairs, beach umbrella and inflatables. We had to buy our own sand toys but left them in the room for the next guests. They have a Duke's Beach House on site which also services the pool area. The resort itself has several pools including one with a water slide. One of the other pools is long and winding which is kind of cool, but it would have been a lot better if it made a loop like a lazy river. All of the staff members that we interacted with were friendly especially our server Melissa. She is the best. The resort is in a good location with a walking path that connect you to the other resorts. Although we didn't swim in that beach we did walk down to watch the sunset. Its my understanding that the beaches in that area are some of the better ones on the island. There was some construction going so one of the exits was closed. This was a bit inconvenient and made the walk to the pool twice as long. The particular room we stayed in did not have any hangers which was a little annoying. There is plenty of parking in the parking garage which is great for keeping the car out of the sun. If you want to stay in that part of the island I would definitely check out the Honua Kai Resort. read more

This was our third time back at the Honua Kai. Things have definitely change post Covid but we understand. Before I get into the review, Vaha, at the front desk did everything she can to make us feel welcome and tried her best to accommodate us. My wife wasn't feeling well from the flight and would love an early check-in. She gave us all of our options. Thank you for the efforts. She is great and greeted me the 4 days we were there before we moved to Wailea. We were direct guest, not through a vendor. It is a lot easier not having to deal with the towel vending machine. We got a great 1 bedroom suite. New couch and tables. It really helps with the aesthetics. Everyone was extremely friendly. We had zero problems parking. If you do come back late, you might have to park a little further. We were able to park in the garage like in the past. Our little girl is older and was able to enjoy the water slide and the beach. The beach has a lot of rocks better for snorkeling. Keep an eye out, the kiddos might step on rocks. The negatives. The Resort fee basically outside of the gym access and parking has zero benefits. There wasn't any housekeeping because of "Covid". Then there is this mandatory insurance fee policy that is non negotiable. Regardless, we had a great time! It is good for families! If you are a direct hotel guest, their staff is great! read more

Visited Maui for my 1st time in September with two family members. The rooms amenities were top notch. Dishwasher, fridge, huge island, washer/dryer, Tvs in each room, 2 masters with large bathrooms, living room with pull out couch and they stocked the room with toiletries and items such as laundry detergent. I am super picky when it comes to beds and I slept great. We did book a resort view and ended up with a view of the loading dock with some interesting things going on. Quite interesting. At one point, we saw people getting loaded into an ambulance. WTF. Good times. We were not there to look out over the balcony and were there to get out and about, so it was ok. The resort is a mix of timeshares and non time shares. They have towel lockers for timeshare guests, and you cannot access them if you are a non time share guest-keep in mind. They have a GREAT coffee shop. Highlight of the resort if you ask me. I drank coffee and ate breakfast bowls, icecream everyday from there. They have other items for purchase as well like toiletries, gifts and drinks. I did not love the beach. They have a tall barrier plant thing completely covering the view to the beach from the walkway, WHY? I guess for privacy for the 6 feet of beach to the resort. Who knows. It is a super small beach and I walked over to the resort to the left and enjoyed the chairs and the beach there on most days. I did swim in the beach and it is really only about a 2 minute walk, so not a huge inconvenience. Some of the hot tubs were empty when we came, maybe under repair. Not sure. I didn't use them anyway as they were pretty crowded, probably because most of them were not working properly. You can get items from the towel shack, but have to purchase them for rent, not included in your stay. Parking is underground and there was plenty of parking. They give you a parking card that is electronic to swipe for you to access the gate in and out. They advertised a bonfire pit, but didn't ever use it. I mean, overall it is a very pretty resort. I think it has more potential for sure considering the amenities they have. I would consider staying again, but would also look maybe next door too. read more

Update: Raised my concerns via formal complaint through Costco Travel, who then sent an email to the management. HK management felt it was "fair" to cover the resort fees only - which is a bit of a slap in the face. This goes to show that they could care less about their property - or its guests. The reality is, if cleanliness is that visible to the naked eye, guess what's going on that you don't see. read more

Update: woke up to a roach on my hand as I Opened the door. Never ever again. Even in my hosteling days I didn't have this. Never. Again! For $1000 a night with a beautiful view? They can do better! Beautiful minus the large crane, roaches in rooms, no fresh towels, safe won't open and my stuff is in it. Microwave doesn't work and roaches in the dishwasher. No one will help, nothing upon check in, I can't even describe the name of this place. Must call during office hours. Of course no maid service, garbage service or even clean towels. Pool towels are like from a motel 6 and a very dirty pool. Slide open only during weekday hours. But I have a corner suite with a 3 way view. All for $1000 a night. Happy vacation to me! read more

It was beautiful, well maintained, friendly staff close to the beach within steps, pools, ponds everything you could want... amazing views, and of course Duke's Restaurant and Bar on the property.... with great food fir ie sky staff and wonderful ambiance with a majestic view of the ocean... Had an amazing stay here with friends and would definitely want to stay here again. The unit itself was clean and well stocked with everything we needed. The balcony had a nice view of the grounds but the pink hotel next to it was not flattering. So if you book here, maybe check to see if there are other units not facing the pink hotel. Absolutely loved walking the grounds with a lot of plumeria trees that are reachable height and hibiscuses bushes with flowers as large as my open palm. The main pool in the Hokulani was stunning leading to an amazing beach and refreshing ocean. Do bring water socks/shoes because there are coral reefs in the shallow water and it will cut up your bare feet. View is stunning here especially at sunset. Can't wait to be back! read more

i rented my condo via maui resort rentals so this review is about honua kai itself. it's a beautiful property but i agree with others about the pool chairs being "reserved" as early as 7am and not showing up for hours. i think they should monitor empty seats. they can use their pool servers or security who see vacant seats and remove towels and items if no one has been there for an hour. so ridiculous and rude some people are. the servers are also losing money from empty seats not ordering. it shouldn't be tolerated. pretty sad if they get to a point where you have to rent a chair but maybe that's the solution for others taking more than they need/use. read more

This review is for our stay at one of the Luana Garden Villas. We had a ground floor unit (unit 12A) and it was perfect for our group! We had 6 adults and 3 toddlers. The ground floor was perfect for easy in-and-out access to the pools that are right in the center of each cluster of villas, and especially with little kids it was nice not to have to walk up and down the stairs a ton of times each day. (Which you'd need to do for the 2nd story villa units) The villa was luxurious and spacious. Air conditioned. Fridge and dishwasher and outdoor grill. Even an outdoor mini fridge. The unlimited beach and pool towel checkout-and-return machines system at Honua Kai was convenient- note: if you forget to return a towel by the end of your stay, you'll be charged $20 a towel. The grounds are great! Minor maintenance issues were easily managed by the management company for our particular unit (KBM Vacations). My only complaints: (1) the lazy river was the only pool that was heated, but even the lazy river pool was cold at times (a misnomer- the water doesn't have a directional flow... it's just shaped like a river but you have to propel yourself just like any other swimming pool). This was during a February visit (highs in upper 70s to 80, lows 60 at night) Except when the sun was blazing at midday, the rest of the time I felt cold in the pools- even the semi heated lazy river. (2) the pathways from the villa to the pools and beach are maze-like and meandering. The shortest path to the pools and beach requires going through the condo building lobby, which is annoying bc you have to don a mask, which rubs off some of your facial sunblock. read more

We had a nice stay at the Honua Kai, and at a great price through a Costco Travel package. Our room was very nice and modern, with granite counters, modern appliances, and nice decor throughout. We booked a 1 bedroom condo and the bathroom was huge with an all glass shower and double sinks. Our biggest issues with the room included a subpar sofa bed, with a back-breaking bar under the middle of the mattress, as well as the lanai door not able to latch completely (but we were on the 4th floor, which made it not as big a deal). The beach behind the resort was typical Ka'anapalli, with not much sand. We went to Fleming beach North of Kapalua a few times instead, which was fantastic. The resort is very nice overall with many swimming pools and a Duke's restaurant right on the grounds. We had daily breakfast for 2 at Duke's included in the package and it was a really nice perk. The breakfasts at Duke's were in generally very good, and the vouchers we used included tax and tip even. With most breakfast entrees between $13-19 on the menu, this is a really great deal. (but the loco moco was disappointing, I was expecting shangri-la for a $19 entree!) The cleaning crew was a bit lacking for one of the cleanings (they only clean every other day, and replace linens the 4th day). They had given us too few towels and it smelled like they did not clean the toilet. Also, I had to call for more towels and it took a 2nd call after an hour to get them. The 4th and 6th day cleaning was satisfactory. Also the shower seemed clogged and we left a note for them to clear it but it seemed like they did nothing. There was construction that we were warned about when booking, but generally it was no issue and we barely heard any noise. I believe the prices are so good on Costco to make up for the construction so it really is a bargain right now. Valet and self parking in the underground garage are included in the resort fee. The garage is decent and we never had a problem finding a space. The check-in hostess was very nice but oddly they told us our room wouldn't be ready for an hour or two, and we left to look around, and bam 10 minutes later we got a text the room was ready. Check-out was a breeze, you get a receipt under the door with final charges, and you just call a number to check out and leave the keys in the room. Overall we had a great stay, I'd recommend this place and definitely book on Costco, because the prices I saw on their normal booking website were pricey! read more
