Loved my stay here. Very nice, it was close to everything restaurants, grocery stores, beach. It wasn't too busy here. Loved the set up. Used the outside patio grill a few times. Gym was nice. The hot tub was nice too. Very spacious rooms. Loved the laundry room as I used it a couple times during my stay. It was really useful. Loved the bag of complimentary coffee. I would stay here again.

The Honua Kai Resort holds such a special place in my heart. This is where my husband and I stayed when he proposed to me in Dec 2019. We were taking photos on the property and then he bent the knee on the beach. Honestly, we had such a great time the first time we were here that we returned for our, super late due to Covid, Honeymoon last month. I love the size and location of the property. From the pools, amenities and the gorgeous view. The rooms are condos that come with kitchens, laundry and balconies. The first time we stayed we did a one bedroom partial ocean, but this time around we did a studio and enjoyed the full ocean view. The staff have spoiled us with some sweet congrats cookies that we really enjoyed. This property also has a Dukes on site which is super convenient. They do get busy though so we've just ordered to-go and enjoyed our food on the balcony. One thing I wish this hotel did have would be a cafe, or some kind of coffee on site. There's a market in the other tower, but the building we stayed in has one under construction. I'm hoping they put a coffee spot because it would be perfect! We love the location and feel when we come here and the included parking is a HUGE plus! I couldn't recommend the Honua Kai more and we look forward to more visits here in the future.

***This review is for a 2 bedroom ocean view balcony.*** Pleasantly surprised! Straight to it - I had read many of the Yelp reviews prior to coming, and I was worried about the roaches in the rooms so I came prepared with the roach sticky traps, and thankfully, we didn't have any! The room really did have all of the essentials, from kitchen items to beach equipment, it really did make things easy. Our family had 3 condos, so it was interesting to see that all condos had different items, so just a heads up that it really does depend on the unit. For example, the TV's were all different (old and new), beach equipment in only our unit, mattresses (some softer and some firm). As you can see in one of the pics, the headboard in our room had stains on it, which automatically threw us off. Both of our remotes in the living room and bedroom didn't have batteries, so we called the number listed in the directory and they dropped them off the next day. Overall this was a great stay and I'd definitely come back again if we had a large group like we did.

Perfect family resort! Our kids were endlessly entertained in the pools and spas and at the beach right on the property. We stayed in a 2 bedroom condo, the space was roomier than we expected. We comfortably fit 3 adults and 2 kids. Beds were also actually comfortable! The ocean view from our room was so beautiful and the cherry on top of the trip! Staff and front desk were all kind and helpful! We loved that Duke's is right there on the property! We ate lunch and dinner there almost every day, the food and drinks were all amazing every time! Thank you Honua Kai!

***THIS REVIEW IS FOR ONE OF THE LUANA GARDEN VILLA IN HONUA KAI*** We had a large family group (8 people) going to Maui and decided to book a 3B/3B Luana garden villa, right next to the Konea Tower. We had a great experience! The pros: - the villa was spacious, modern, clean, and equipped with everything we needed from kitchen supplies to beach gear. - comes with a complimentary tandem garage spot right next to the villa - private pool for the villa area but also access to all the main resort pools and beach right in front of the hotel (walking distance was reasonable to the main beach ~5-6 minutes) - great pools for young kids, also a water slide - easy check in and check out process through an electronic keypad - unlimited towel access through the towel tracker machine - close to the Times Supermarket, various eateries, and food trucks - tasty food from Duke's restaurant which is right in front of the kiddie pool. They also provide food and drink service to the pool areas. The cons: - the internet was average speed and limited to certain parts of the villa - quite pricey per night ($1000-$1400/night) If you're considering a villa, I would definitely recommend booking through Maui Westside Property. They have several villas available. They were friendly, responsive, and organized. Here's their link: https://mauiwestside.com/luana-garden-villas

Had a wonderful stay at Honua Kai. The room was clean and spacious. I really loved how you get a full kitchen and refrigerator if you decide you want to cook during your stay. A glimpse into a condo life you decide to get a condo in Maui. Free self or valet parking included (tip your valet) so you can save tons of money if you have a rental car. Dukes is basically on the property, about a 2 minute walk which was a bonus. Beach is 3 minute walk. Resident cats on the property so you might see them being fed by their handlers. The only thing that bugged me is the unit had a musty smell, which you really noticed especially coming inside the unit after being out all day which was unpleasant.

we only got back less than a week ago, and I've recommended this resort to more people than I can count. Absolutely beautiful grounds, the beach is just a simple walk out from the resort. I have snorkeled in multiple places.(Jamaica, the Bahamas, Mexico..). My husband has snorkeled even more places than I have, and he said the only place better than this snorkeling right outside the resort on their beach was the great barrier reef. For me, it was the best snorkeling I've seen! Please remember to only use reef safe sunscreen! in fact, with that said, I came from Reno, Nevada and I highly recommend waiting to get your sunscreen there! We stopped at Costco right after we picked up our rental cars, and their blue lizard sunscreen is $10 cheaper than our same sunscreen in Reno! We did a resort view two bedroom, and it was perfect for our family of four! The king bed in the children's room was able to be separated into two twin size beds . They provide not only a washer and dryer, but laundry soap and fabric sheet sheets. That quick Costco trip also helped us prepare some meals in the kitchen in our room rather than eating out every single meal. The only thing I didn't like was how many people reserved chairs with just towels and then never came back to them. I think people need to be a little bit more respectful of if you're not actually physically sitting in a chair then do you really need to reserve it? And that's not just if you walk over to take a dip in the pool, I watched some chairs, literally be unused for more than three hours! Don't bother with Dukes or Leilani's on the beach. Those are both very chain / could eat them anywhere type of food. Try to hit some local spots instead! I highly recommend going to farmers markets and craft fairs to get your souvenirs, rather than the gift shop downstairs. Support those people who lost their homes and businesses in the fire. There's a little food truck pod right outside of the resort that's 10 minute walking distance (max), and it provided great meals! The coffee truck in the morning has a phenomenal coconut latte . We had an issue with our washing machine leaking, and one quick call sent up maintenance and it was resolved immediately . The staff is so nice, the grounds are so beautiful! I could literally not recommend this resort enough if you have children. Oh! You can rent a boogie board, however**, I would highly recommend renting it for the week because some of the best boogie boarding is actually in the evening when the tide is starting to come in. If you only rent it for the day, it's due back at 5 PM, just when the waves are getting good for boogie boarding.. But the snorkel and fins, one day rental is perfect! I like to vacation, different places every time, but this is one case where we will definitely come back to this resort .

We booked five nights through Outrigger for a three bedroom/ three bath Oceanview unit. Checking-in was very easy and friendly. The staff we encountered were all nice and friendly. My biggest concern were all the complaints of roaches on here but we only saw a couple of small ones in the kitchen. We kept our food put away and cleaned up after every meal as a precaution. Roaches are known to be prevalent in Hawaii so be prepared. Our room was clean and well stocked with towels, shampoo, conditioner, bar soaps, and lotion upon arrival. Towels were readily available in the downstairs lobby, pool area, and you can just dial 0 and request them. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed including paper towels and dish soap. Detergent and Bounce is provided for the washer and dryer. The on-site convenient store has basic items to stock your fridge or freezer such as eggs and frozen foods. We baked a frozen pizza when we were too tired to eat out one night. There is only a Duke's Beach House restaurant onsite but plenty of nearby food options outside the resort including a food truck park right next door. The front desk was always quick to respond to help us when needed. Room service is by request only but we never felt the need to use them. The pool opens at 8am and is the best time to head down during this summer. The slide was very fun for the kids. There is a very small splash pad and baby pool. The lazy river is nice but strangely does not connect all around. The grounds were very beautiful and well maintained during our stay. The beach front location is the best part. The beach is clean, beautiful, and the waves were not too rough for the kids. We were actually able to see sea turtles. I would totally recommend this resort and booking through Outrigger.

Ok so now that I am back home I can sit down and write my review. I must say I am impressed with this resort, it wasn't what I expected and I hope to be back in the future. Ok so note this, staying here many of the units are individually owned so any complaint I may have can't be held responsible by the resort totally. So let's get to it, I stayed at one of the condo units which was decorated very nicely and was very spacious. At first site I was way impressed. So usually when I walk in rental, hotels, air bnbs and places I stay I give it the once over. Walking in the first I noticed was the scaffolding outside the balcony. It totally blocked most of my view. That was a big downer but did not ruin my trip. They actually offered a discount per day because of it and I lived with that. Now looking around the room I found little bits of damage and things that were easy fixes that literally couldn't have been taken care of way before I booked 3 month previous. Just for the prices you pay for this place I'd think these items could be taken care of. The TV is a little dated, there are no USB ports anywhere but there are lots of plugs. The wifi was sketchy at times but it worked. I hated the bed, It did a number on my back. I went to get a massage and that didn't help at all. I slept on the couch and it was small. The pillows were almost non existent. Once again the room was pretty awesome but you can see some others had better benefits to them and were taken care of better than others. My room was the bare minimum. I saw they also have some bigger units on the site that is good for family or groups I will be trying out next time. Staff was great, actually pretty excellent, I have no complaints at all. The grounds are immaculate, the pool is beautiful and you are literally steps to the beach which I loved. I would definitely day again and would suggest anyone and everyone to stay here. Before I left I was able to walk down to the beach and tell Maui good bye, I almost dropped a tear.

Well, most people were not friendly. Pools were great. Stayed in one room that smelled like fish for a week. Pool was good, Beach was ok. Not very impressed with the resort overall for the money. The owners are pretty clear that they don't like the renters. They will walk right through you. Stayed in 2 different rooms. First room was ok, smelled like fish. The second room was infested with roaches. For a $$$$ resort. Thumbs down. Oh check your coffee pot for roaches as well.

    Weekly farmer market purchase

This place is special. It's hard to put into words but there is just something magical about this place. It's not overwhelming with a ton of people and yet there is so much to do everyday. The beach has fantastic snorkeling five feet away from the shore, the pools are great for kids, and it's equally as entertaining for adults. The rooms are huge and have kitchens to cook in and I never find it terribly expensive. This is our second time and we will be back soon. Mahalo hanua kai

Ask the Community - Outrigger Honua Kai Resort & Spa

Is the pool slide still open during COVID?

Yes it is , it was open at the end of may.

Is there filtered water from the refrigerators in the rooms?

It depends on the kind of fridge your room has. Ours has filtered water and is super convenient. I've stayed here before and that room did not have filtered water and we had to go to the lobby to refill water bottles.

Hello yelpers. Can you please tell me if the hotel provides -laundry detergent -dish washing soap…

Yes, there is enough laundry detergent and dish washing soap for a couple of loads. Dishes and utensils are in the room.

Is there an opportunity to purchase day passes to the pools for non resort guests?

There would be no need to do this. No key is needed for pool entrance. Just to get towels.

Can you bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol) to the resort pools?

You can! You have to keep it in room but there's a market right across the street to stock your bar and kitchen.

    Is there a pool bar?

There's no swim up pool bar. However, there are servers from Dukes constantly making rounds at the pools taking drink orders. They are on point! You could also walk to Dukes bar and order a drink. Of course Dukes is right there at the pools.

Does anyone have recommendations regarding cabana/gazebo rentals?

If you talk to the people down by the pool where you get towels they can help.

You have to pay $90 for two beach chairs and an umbrella. $36 for just an umbrella. Parking is $35 a night. It all adds up quickly. Sometimes we get an ocean view where you can see a sliver of water. Another time we were next to their laundry units, which were loud. Other times we were ocean front and it was incredible to watch the whales. The little kitchenette is perfect. They are well stocked. And I love that you can do laundry. When we arrived, our villa contained power tools, dirty dishes, and had clearly not been properly prepared for guests. What was even more frustrating was that it took three separate face-to-face visits with both the front desk and management before the room was finally cleaned. Communication throughout the process was poor, and we never felt that anyone took real ownership of the issue. The only compensation offered was a $50 resort credit, which did not reflect the inconvenience or the time we spent trying to resolve a problem that should never have existed. Beyond our room, both the villas and many of the common areas felt worn, dingy, and lacking the level of care we have come to expect from the Westin brand. The most disappointing aspect of our stay wasn't simply the condition of the property--it was the apparent lack of urgency and concern from management. We have always associated Westin with quality, service, and attention to detail. Unfortunately, this experience fell well below those expectations. We hope management takes these concerns seriously because loyal owners and guests deserve much better.

If I were to visit Maui again, or had friends/family visiting, would I recommend this place, NO…read more We booked a one bedroom condo and ended up with a studio; half of the bedroom wall was missing. When we inquired about our room and if it was correct, we were told it was and that some owners of the condos renovate the condos and they may not match the online postings exactly. We were very displeased with this and this is clearly false advertising. If I wanted a studio, I would have booked and paid for a studio. As a family, we had no privacy because of this and made the sleeping situation undesirable. We could also hear the people above us every night. At around 3am they would be up stomping around and you could hear everything. The rooms are supposed to be updated but I would not consider our room updated. There was no housekeeping. I had to call and request it but our room was only serviced once. Luckily we weren't charged, unlike other reviews I have seen. The larger pool was fine; definitely not resort style. But it could use some maintenance each day because the pool seemed dirty and not cleaned from the various people frequenting it each day. I would have given this place a one star but I gave it two stars due to: 1) the front desk staff we interacted with was very kind and helpful; truly so nice. 2) our kids enjoyed the morning hot cocoa 3) the location to the beach is nice and the beach was enjoyable 4) the walking path and proximity to local spots and hotels was convenient. But again, we were disappointed and would not stay here

My first hawaii trip was to Maui in 12/2022. This resort is very nice! They had two different pool locations. A good size. The views of the ocean was so beautiful and the weather was just perfection. Never got never cold. We had a queen size bed and pull out couch also the size of a queen. A dining table, full size refrigerator, sink, cooking appliance, and dinner ware. The restroom was nice. It had the shower and tub in one room and the other part of the restroom had a normal sized mirrored closet, in addition to the drawers for our clothes in the main room. I wish they had an ice machine but they had ice cube trays in the freezer. WIFI WAS GREAT. The TV aid a bit old school lol. We didn't need to reach out to the workers often but if needed we could just text them which was fantastic. Plenty of parking and I loved that this was not super crowded when we went to the pool. Prob because everyone is out and about. It's walking distance to the beach of course and a 10 minute walk for us to Whalers village. I wouldn't mind staying here again but most likely I'd try a different location just for new experiences.

Our partial ocean view was exactly what the pictures showed on the website. A microwave or toaster would be a great item to add to the rooms, or at least near the vending machines on each floor. Beach access- BEAUTIFUL. so close. Constant views. The beach is seconds away from the resort. Maui brewing co also has ocean front views and was super nice for sunset. Resort- the pool was cleaned every morning and always warm. Plenty of seating options around the pool and around the resort in general. The vegetation was really nice. All staff were SO kind. The grounds always seemed clean and relaxing. Cultural classes- absolute favorite part of our trip. We had so much fun learning about the Hawaiian culture through story telling, history, garden walks, lei ceremony, lei making, and wood carving. Overall we had such an amazing experience, learned so much, and had constant beautiful views. Only complaint is that I wish there were more food options at our resort, or microwaves. Maui Brewing Co was okay, but limited. Whalers Village is a quick walk and has a variety of options.

We booked through Costco travel (airfare, hotel, car) and this was the hotel we picked…read more LOCATION (5/5): fantastic! the beach is steps away so you don't need to drive to the beach. There's the popular outdoor mall, Whaler's Village about a 5 minute walk away with restaurants and shops, just follow the beach path. LUGGAGE STORAGE (1/5): We arrived a bit early and the staff held onto our luggage while we went out to get food. I didn't see where it was taken. I did not realize that they would store our luggage outside in the humidity!!! I thought they would store it inside the hotel in a closet in the back. I had temperature-sensitive medication in my luggage and when we came back to check-in, I was shocked to find our luggage stored outside. Had I known that, I would have asked them to store my meds in the fridge for me. Thankfully, my meds were okay in the end, but it did give me panic. PARKING (5/5): Since we booked through Costco, the parking was included with our stay. We had in/out privileges and no valet required. STAFF (5/5): I forgot her name, but she welcomed us very friendly and checked us in. Michelle I think was her name. We asked about local places to eat and she kindly wrote us a list. The housekeeping staff was also very nice and always greeted us in the halls. SHUTTLE/TROLLEY (5/5): There's a free green trolley that will take you to Whaler's Village and came around every 30min or so (check the schedule) and will also drop you off at nearby hotels along the beach, not just the Outrigger. Also, the hotel has it's own private shuttle that will follow the same route within the resort grounds if you don't want to wait for the trolley. Again, they don't exit the resort. One night we went to a nearby hotel (The Bungalos) for a music event but had just missed the trolley and the guys out front said they could drive us in the hotel van. And then gave us a number to call them when we were ready to go back to the hotel, so we called them but wanted to go to dinner at Whaler's Village after and they took us. So so convenient. really nice guy! It's complimentary but we tipped our driver and he was always so kind! We read in the handouts that they did a special going-away ceremony at the end of your stay but unfortunately we had to miss it to catch our early flight, so Michelle was kind enough to give us the necklace and do a mini version for us there at the check-out counter. POOL (1/5): We didn't even try the pool. It's quite small in size, and it was so hot, and no shade anywhere, so we didn't bother. They did provide towels though that you could swap out and stuff, so we used those and just went to the beach. RENTALS: There's a hut on-site where you get the towels, but also offers rental stuff for the water, beach chairs, etc. Note: the beach chairs + umbrella rentals are quite steep, I think was like 2 chairs + 1 umbrella almost $85 and had to return by 5pm. We ended up going to Costco and instead and bought 2 tommy bahama chairs and umbrella and used them the whole week while we were there, and even used our chairs at other places too. We saved some money that way and used that money instead to tip the staff and buy food in Maui b/c it ain't cheap! ACTIVITY SCHEDULE: We were given a print-out at check-in with activities throughout the week, however we showed up to one of them and there was nothing going on but there was a gentleman there. We were told that the print-out was outdated so we had missed the activity since it was earlier in the week. So don't go off the print-out. He had a different schedule available at his table. So..there's that. Overall, I would not mind staying here again but would be interested in staying at the other hotels along the Kanapali beach.

It was a studio room, still has wonderful ocean view BUT you cannot hear the ocean because the fans from the restaurants down below (Whalers Village) are on & are LOUD. This time, I did my research & called in advance requesting to have a view facing the north (either side - tower 1 or 2). I was told they cannot guarantee a specific room. Which I understand, it was just a request to have a different view. They gave us room 1164 (Studio room in tower 2). The views from the balcony is beautiful. You CAN hear the ocean from your balcony. There is a small table to eat meals in your balcony & a lounger chair. We did not pick a Premium studio so that is why the furniture, kitchen and bathroom is dated. But we were only there to eat and sleep. The bed was too low but was comfy and soft. There is a small sized tv facing the bed. Hawaiian tropical decor all around. The bathroom was ok. The kitchen is fully stocked. Dishwasher and stove works. There is a shared washing machine & dryer in each floor by the elevators. They provide just enough dishwasher pods, soap, and laundry detergent. Again this hotel is a nice gem. Steps away from the Whalers Village: Restaurants & ABC store is walking distance. Hotel grounds are immaculate. Every morning, you can see the workers cleaning or pruning the trees/flowers. You get what you pay for, if you want updated/newer furniture, pick the Premium.

The underground garage is also a plus. A downside I had with the property was not the property itself, but the people staying there. Most of the people staying there were elderly and white, and nearly everyone working were Filipino. I'm Filipino. I got into an elevator and a white lady looked me up and down and asked if I was working. When I was at the pool, as the only POC, I felt like eyes were on me in a judgmental way. Maybe it's nothing and it's just in my head and everyone at the pool just had a RBF. Another downside is that the lobby didn't have coffee available all day. Since I'm under 50, next time I'll stay in Kihei.
