I will preface with this: THIS RATING DOES NOT REPRESENT THE STAFF IN THE STORE. THIS RATING IS BECAUSE OF OWNERSHIP. I've been going to this store for many years now, ever since I've moved to the area and it is single-handedly the store I most visit and give my business to. What I love most besides the staff is that while in there, they always have the tv on with games on so I can wait and watch for a few minutes to catch up or just chat with staff about Philly sports. HOWEVER, just recently it seems that MANAGEMENT has REMOVED the tv because apparently their staff watches too much tv. NEVER once have I been in there and not been helped immediately by staff. Never have they been overtaken by the allure of the tv and too busy to help a customer. The employees BUST THEIR ASSES and management TREATS THEM LIKE SHIT. This is the SAME management who refused to clean the RAT AND MOUSE SHIT from all over the store. I used to see it all over the counters and floors but the OWNERS IS A CHEAP SCUMBAG and now he feels as though he needs to turn their store into North Korea and take away the slightest bit of joy they have, the TV. How about you stop sending all your money overseas and take care of your employees and stop being SCUMBAG OWNERS. From now on, until that TV is put back up, every time I'm in this store and see a health violation I'm going to report you to the NJDOH and OSHA until you have so many fines you'll wanna puke. read more

Canal's is my favorite "city to shore" liquor store. It's conveniently located on my way from Philly to the AC area and doesn't involve going too far out of the way. The wine selection isn't huge, but it's priced pretty well enough. The real draw is their beer selection; they have a great craft beer aisle. And they have employees who are willing to help you find something or just chat about beer. The beer prices are pretty good. The parking lot can be a bit of a pain as it's located right along the Black Horse Pike. Rather than being a traditional "lot" there are spaces along the front of the store. There isn't much room to wait for a spot to open up if you are coming from the BHP. It's also hard to make that left turn back onto the highway. Parking aside, the selection, prices and convenience to 76/42/676 make it a good place to stop for my Jersey beer needs. read more

Canals is a solid store. I cannot recall any complaints over the last 6 years I have been going to canals. Generally they have a great selection and wide variety. If you are looking for a particular selection you can generally always find it here. They also generally offer a military discount on purchases other than beer! read more

Canals in Mt. Ephraim is your basic large liquor store. They have a decent selection of beers and spirits but where they shine is the wine department. There are bigger wine shops in the area but the guy who runs the wine shop in Canals is fantastic and really knowledgable. They have your typical Aussie critter wines and the lower end mass produced stuff that everyone carries but more importantly they have a large selection of the (really) fine wines which range from $10 to $$$. What I also like are the guys that work there like Chris and Brian, they know their stuff!!! Just tell them what you are looking for or even what you are having for dinner and they can point you in the direction that will make you happy -- they do not try to upsell you to a more expensive wine so do not hesitate to ask them!!! I really recommend them. Oh and you should also go there on a Saturday as they do a wine tasting which showcases some different stuff that many would not normally try. I go almost every Saturday myself sometimes just for a tasting ;) read more

Not one of my favorite Canals, as they don't have as big a selection as some of the others, and their selection of premium liquors is really lacking (or so hidden/locked up I couldn't find more than an 18 year old JW). But it's clean, it's convenient to my house, and there's no arguing that their prices are hard to beat. If I need a quick case of something like lager, or a bottle or run for mojitos, this is a great place to stop at. read more

This is my neighborhood liquor store. I started going here out of convenience when I moved to the neighborhood but always had a great experience that it's now my go-to store. They have a decent wine selection but definitely chat up the owners for recommendations as I've been steered to some great finds I would have overlooked on my own. I like the beer choices especially because they carry NJ beers from breweries like Tonewood and Cape May Brewing. The liquor selection is decent, too. Take a stroll down those aisles and you'll be surprised at the selections. Good prices and nice, helpful people, so an overall great spot. Word of caution: Watch the parking lot. It can get tricky with people flying off the Pike. read more

Stopped in on my way to visit my sister, who lives nearby. Aimed to pick up a bottle or 2 of beer to drink with dinner and took a glance at Scotch behind the counter. couldn't believe my eyes but there were 3 bottles of Laphroaig I had thought I would never see again (limited edition). I snapped up all 3 and got into a whiskey conversation with the gentleman behind the counter. He took me through their selection and introduced me to a couple new American single malts to try. But, the best part is getting advice from Jerry! His recommendations have been superb, and his appreciation for what makes a wine special is invaluable. I haven't visited this store in person, but I recently used their online ordering system and had a good experience. I was looking for a specific wine that I couldn't find at any of my local wine stores, and they had it. I called to make sure they had it in stock, and the person who answered the phone was friendly and helpful. Then I placed the order online, and my order shipped the next day as I had been told it would over the phone. Overall I was very pleased. Good prices too. read more
