When booking this campground, we read the surprising negative reviews, looks like a nice campground. On arrival, we were escorted to our site by what felt like a police officer. Instead of letting us back into our site or saying "this is your site", he starts yelling at me - turn your wheel this way, turn your wheel that way - back up. I finally put the truck in park and explained that my wife and I have a system and to please leave us alone and let us do it. He refused and said it was his furniture in the campsite and he is going to direct me in. Read some of the other reviews and seems like the same patten of rude and offensive treatment. If you have a problem with authority, stay away! read more

It's a lovely campground well maintained grounds and sites, run by owner who I believe lives at campground and is ever present keeping the place well run. However my biggest complaint and I have expressed it in the past is the state of the women's bathroom. It is in dire need of updating. It's somewhat clean however the showers and toilets are nasty. The toilet seats have chips and the showers are stained the grout is dirty and the bench in shower area is chipped and so unappealing I'd never sit on. It would take a coat of paint and new toilet seats to make an inexpensive effort to update this bathroom. I do wonder if the owner would have his daughter or wife use this facility? read more

This wonderful quaint campground deserves a 4 rating at least. Great level sites, the store has everything you need and if you can't find what you're looking for there's a 7-11 in walking distance. The employees are so friendly and helpful and they even offer a fun, classic, and free trolly ride to downtown. How good is that?!?! Best dry firewood I ever purchased at a campground and at a good price too. I have to return when it gets warmer to enjoy the pool and there's a nice golf course right next store. Absolutely great stop for an overnight stop if you're traveling on 81. read more

We stayed at Candy Hill Campground in Winchester during Days 38-40 of our Airstream travels. We had stayed here once before while heading north, but that was only for one night. This time, we planned to stay several days so we could visit family in the area. Because we travel with two dogs, access to grass and a dog park is important to us. When I made the reservation, I chose a site near the dog park. We arrived a little late and waited until the following morning to connect the sewer. Unfortunately, the sewer connection was higher than our Airstream's sewer outlet, making it impossible to use. We tried repositioning the trailer, but the slope of the site made no difference. My husband asked if we could move, and the campground assigned us another site. We appreciated the move at the time, but the staff later used that accommodation against us when another issue arose. My sister-in-law was running errands nearby and wanted to stop for about ten minutes to see our new Airstream. Because I am a rule follower, I went to the office and explained the situation. I was told she would have to pay a $10 visitor fee, even for such a short visit. I questioned the charge and asked to speak with the owner, but the owner was unavailable. I said we would simply visit with her in the parking lot. However, my sister-in-law really wanted to see the trailer, so she paid the $10. The following evening, she and her husband came to pick us up for dinner. They pulled into our site, and within minutes, the manager arrived in a golf cart and yelled at them. They immediately left and waited for us outside the campground entrance. Instead of letting the matter end there, the man continued to berate my husband. He reminded us that the campground had already "accommodated" us by allowing us to move sites and brought up the fact that I had questioned the visitor fee the day before. The manager then demanded another $20 for the two people who had briefly stopped at our site. Since we were leaving the next morning, my husband paid the fee rather than continue arguing. We have stayed at many campgrounds, and this was the rudest treatment we have ever experienced. The campground seems more focused on patrolling for violations and collecting visitor fees than on making guests feel welcome. What made the situation worse was the inconsistent enforcement of the rules. The paperwork states that vehicle repairs are not permitted, yet someone was replacing a fuel pump in the parking area. When my husband pointed this out, the man replied that the person worked there, so they made an exception. During our first stay, there was also a barking dog inside the camp store. An employee explained that she was watching the dog for the owner--another apparent exception to the rule prohibiting dogs inside buildings. We understand that campgrounds need rules, and we make every effort to follow them. However, rules should be applied consistently, and guests should be treated respectfully. Unfortunately, the rude and confrontational behavior of this staff member overshadowed our visit with family and left us with a very negative impression of Candy Hill Campground. We will not return and cannot recommend it to other travelers. read more

We arrived about 1430 to get set up. You stop at the stop sign then go check in. After that a gentleman will take you to your RV site and help you back in. This was my second time and it turned out pretty good. Everything is still standing at the campsite. Very easy to set up. They also have a dog park for off leash running for your dog. Walked the store and plenty of items for sale, plenty of t-shirts and sweatshirts for sale. Free coffee is available. You are not far from Applebees, Wal Mart, IHOP, and Dunkin Donuts for coffee and fresh bagels in the morning. Very nice set up and enjoyed our stay. Some sites have regular gas grills on site. Picnic table was available, also 50/30 plugs available do not adapter is necessary. Thanks guys very wonderful campgrounds and site. read more

I made a reservation with this place at noon today and just called them to see if they needed me to pay by credit card that we were running late ran into a lot of traffic on 95. They told me they were sorry but they wouldn't wait for us the gates locked at 8:00 and there is no getting in after eight and we were gonna 8:08 !! so sad !! Peaceful, clean and relaxed. The owners take great care of this campground and the staff is attentive and go above and beyond for guests. During my stay, the owner (fireman) and security were able to catch and immediately put out a fire in the back of a guest's uninhabited RV. That speaks volumes. I also like that there are cameras and the owners don't tolerate any shenanigans, hijinks or chicanery. It's super chill unless you're a jerk, a paranoid creep or up to no good. The place is home to municipal folk like cops and nurses so if you're a portable lab or a dealer-on-wheels this ain't the spot to meth around. Downtown Winchester is neat. Up the street is a 7/11, across the street is a Walmart and a mile down the road is a produce farmstand with the best apples I've ever tasted. read more

I stayed here late 2023 for a few nights for my final shakedown stay before hitting the road for 4 months and I really enjoyed my visit. I did not come in contact with Carl, owner that I know of but everyone I did interact with were great, friendly and accommodating. I was escorted to my site and even spotted to get parked then that person came back around a few minutes later to ensure my site, hookups were all good and asked it if I needed anything.. nearby shopping, food was great, easy to access. The camp store was incredible! It was well stocked and had tons of camper parts & accessories. Price was also excellent. I was not too far from fairly busy bypass/highway but that does NOT bother me at all. Neighbors were very friendly and even invited me over for a beverage and hang by the fire they had going. read more

Karl Littman is the owner of Candy Hill Campground. It is a very clean and safe place. I know it is safe because Karl runs a tight ship. If you exceed the 5 mph speed limit when entering the campground, like I did when driving in at 9 mph, one of his employees will flag you down and tell you. Yes, there is a radar gun. There are numerous cameras on the property, some you can see and some I imagine that you don't see - again, more safety measures. Once I slowly drove into the property, with all windows down and sun roof open, I held my parking pass up so it wouldn't blow out. Again, stopped and reminded to have it hung from mirror. Really. We had our RV there for six months due to working in the area. At some point, we are not sure when, the water to our camper was turned off & locked. A chain and actual lock. No notice was provided. We are usually there Monday thru Thursday. It was explained to us that they knocked on our door first before applying the lock. I'm sure they could notice the big Ram truck wasn't parked nearby - nor did anyone call. Our professional skirting was installed in October, only to be told we needed to remove it. Otherwise, Karl would report us as a primary resident of the state and we would have to pay taxes (?). We were assured it didn't get that cold - so we aren't certain if our pipes froze or if the water we were paying for was shut off. If your camper needs a mechanic, Karl only allows his friend to come in to repair your RV. He charges $125 to stop by. Karl and Co. need to work on their customer relations skills. Their tone when speaking to you is condescending and has a demeaning tone each time. No one smiles. It is an uncomfortable place to stay - but there is a strict contract, loads of men on golf carts circling the grounds, cameras and staff who are constantly curt with their comments. Cable is extra and not worth the three fuzzy channels so plan to stream. WiFi was NOT free. So much potential wasted at this place. No warm welcome or s'mores.... We won't ever return. read more

This is not a round the clock kids play park. Nice rv's in a nicely kept rv park. The store is loaded with rv supplies. Walls and isles of things for your rv. Clean laundry room. Nice enough rest rooms and showers. And yes, you need to drive slow. The guards/ helpers know where all the kids and people with needs are in the park incase of any needs or concerns. They watch the front gate and do security checks around the park to make sure your things are safe. Pick the right site and you'll have more room than you can imagine. Cameras and microphones everywhere and they radar your speed and if you go over 5mph they stop you and yell at you. After staying here several times over the past year, we will not come back again. The negative reviews here, and on Google, are correct- this place is like prison. They watch for any infraction to the rules, no matter how slight, and the Campground Nazis are always watching. We were there last weekend. After putting up a small dog pen, with the help of one of their employees, we were told it wasn't allowed. After having words with the owner, who's quite a jerk BTW, he tells us they won't allow us to stay again because they have a list of our "infractions" in the office. Now, while he's saying this, he's right up in my husband's face, shaking his finger at him. He's lucky my husband has self restraint because someone else would have decked him. My daughter lives in town and comes to visit us at the RV. She has to check in at the office and buy a day pass for $10 even if she's only picking something up and isn't staying more than 5 minutes. The Campground Nazis literally block her in! The owner accused her of "burning rubber" and leaving black tire marks on the ground! Her car is incapable of that, LOL! They accused her, and us, of speeding through the campground. We asked for proof. My husband told the owner we were going to burn out with our 45 foot, 45,000 pound coach when we leave (yeah, like THAT is possible). He obviously doesn't understand sarcasm because he said my husband was being childish LOL. Apparently, if you're driving at idle speed, you're speeding over their 5 mph speed limit. Do you know how slow 5 mph is? I can walk faster than that, even with two new hips! When we stated this to the owner, he told us to ride our brakes because "you must watch out for kids." What kids??? The place was nearly empty and I've never seen a child there during our visits. If he's that worried about the kids, maybe he should fix the dilapidated, run down playground so they don't injure themselves on it. BTW... what other campground keeps a list of rules "infractions", records your speed with a radar gun and has cameras with microphones all over the property? Seems pretty invasive and excessive to me. Staying here is not relaxing. You must be on your toes every minute and the Campground Nazis drive around checking all the RV sites for anything against the rules and they will block access to your site until you correct it. We fully expected them to confront us while we were walking our dog to check that the leash was not over the 6' max in their rules. We've stayed at luxury RV Resorts of a significantly higher caliber than Candy Hill Campground and have never encountered a problem with their rules. They always welcome us back and we look forward to our next stay. So, unless you want to be watched by "Big Brother" and the Campground Nazis, don't stay here. read more

Pleasant surprise. I chose Candy Hill Campground from the Good Sam website based on its location and activities available (in Winchester for the Apple Blossom Festival). I was a little worried after I called and made the reservation. The gentleman who took my reservation did not seem friendly or welcoming at all. Then I read the reviews. I was expecting the worst. After arrival, though, my worries were put to rest. After check in, which was a good experience, I was led to my spot. Once there, the employee who led me there asked if I needed any more help. I said "no", and he left. I paid $5 for a large bundle of firewood and it was delivered to my campsite. They have a store that is well stocked. The employees were friendly and answered any questions I had. The location is convenient to anything in the area. If I have any gripe, it's that the pull-through campsites are loud - right next to the highway. The fan in my travel trailer covered up the noise at night, so it wasn't terrible. Overall, it's a nice little campground. I would come back. read more

Wonderful campground. Yes it is located close to the highway so you do hear the cars and trucks going by, but besides this, it is a beautiful camp ground. Well maintained and staff is very friendly. Our site was one of their new premium sites which includes outdoor patio furniture and a stand-alone gas grill which we used both nights we were there. Our propane tank was empty and they promptly replaced it with a full one. We highly recommend this camp ground. read more

Don't Stop at the stop sign for a good first impression. And READ THE OTHER REVIEWS, I didn't and was pleasantly surprised to what happened next.... Arrived and was in line to register. TT in front of us needed to back into a spot (A4) right where we were waiting in line. The wife asked us to help out by moving so they could begin to park. To be a polite camper, drove up and past the "Stop Sign" so the campers could back in. Within seconds was greeted by "Nick" a teenage employee driving a pink dodge neon with the arrogance that he could issue me a traffic summons. He immediately questioned and chastised us for " blowing that stop sign," and not remaining "in line" to be processed and registered. Our explanation didn't change Nicks view of our gross violation of the campground traffic laws. Walked into the office and "Linda" greeted me with more questioning and a bad demeanor for the stop sign violation. As I was explaining my intended courtesy to the parking campers, the walkie talkie sounded and a Third male was asking "why did that rig drive past the stop sign". Wow what a great few minutes at this campground. Linda made a comment about "the excessive temperatures" "having people on edge" (meaning me? Never got loud or confrontational, kept quiet) didn't entertain her comments, checked in and went to meet the golf cart employee to direct us into our site. (A6) He expertly directed a near flawless parking. Extras (trolley tour, guests, etc.) at the campground, pay by cash or expect a service change added to your credit card. Very transient atmosphere. Many campers park, stay the night, and move on. Eastern edge of campground on the shoulder of route 37 southbound (see photo) Roving patrols of golf cart "guards" all the time. Employees park golf carts watching the entrance and when you roll in, they roll out behind you and follow you. One day found a golf cart roadblock set up at the entrance. ? Weird. Rules rules rules. For a real hoot read the rules...wth Several days later went in to ask a question about my bill. 50 something male (possibly owner?) in a condescending and arrogant demeanor, explained my ignorance of how the charges were annotated on the credit bill. WOW "Internet Service" charge of $5 is for the service fee charged by the Online booking website and billed to me, not for the use of the WiFi ( which did not use) was told to call to save five dollars...great and have to speak to one of your wonderful employees. No thank you. Stayed for 5 nights. Average campground, Giving this rating due to the first impression, rules, hidden fees, the big brother feel For you Nick( the rest of the golf cart patrol, the owner and employees), just a FYI. before someone enters your campground a sign gives notice that the State road system ends. The campgrounds stop signs and 5 mph speed can't be enforced (as it states on your signs) by law enforcement on private property. Paid for Friday-Monday and left on Saturday it was so bad. The rules are beyond ridiculous. Country music too loud on a small hand held speaker at 1pm, kids yelled at for riding bikes on the campground streets, etc. The regulars will complain about any newbies they can and the campground staff rides around on golf carts like the gestapo. Staff is fantastic. They have rules, clearly spelled out when you click to book, and they monitor guests to see everyone abides by those rules. I appreciate the safety this provides me as a camper. We have had sites in several areas of the campground, all full hook up. Planned activities, game room, outdoor game area, super clean pool. Bathhouse is dated but few use it because their RV has accommodations. We will return. read more

Hubby and I stayed here meeting my sister and BIL. We had a great time. Read a lot of reviews on how grumpy they are, but we found that they were just enforcing their rules which was nice for a change. It is horrible going to a campground and there is poo everywhere and noise into the wee hours. This was not the case here which made for nice strolls around the campground and pleasant evenings around the campfire. Staff in the store were extremely friendly and helpful. Will definitely camp here again. Oh yes they are a bit anal if you roll a bit past the stop sign so be careful when first pulling in. read more

One thing to add about the parking 'attendants': I personally watched one of these guys cause a man to jackknife his fifth wheel. It dented the cab of his truck and shattered the rear glass. I am an Army veteran (1968-1971) and both me and my wife are senior citizens. We were traveling from N.C. to MA and tent camping along the way. We found a campsite about half way to our destination. Previous night I sent an email containing a photo of my truck with the pop-up tent (Roofnest) extended. Did not receive a response by morning so I called. The person who answered was pleasant and I explained my situation verbally describing the tent and our requirements. I also mentioned the email sent the previously night so these folks could actually see what I was talking about. Was told this should be fine. We arrived to CH to check in. The clerk asked where the pop up tent was. I pointed to the tent on the truck. Comment: 'I've never seen one like that. We don't reserve sites for that type of tent. ' I mentioned that I had described the tent configuration on the phone that morning and told him I wouldn't need a 30amp connection, just access to a toilet/bathroom. 'No problem.' We waited 45 minutes for the manager? (Karl) to show up and right after walking through the door said they don't allow our tents on their campground. I asked if they had received/read the previous email. Karl checked and the email was in the inbox unread. He looked at the email photo and said that if they had seen the photo they would have told us we would not be able to reserve a site. They admitted that they should read the email but there was nothing he could do (even though only a quarter of the campsite was filled)! We explained that all we needed was a level site and nothing more. Karl commented that he couldn't do that because of previous problems at that location. Keep in mind that this a campsite that supports RV's, trailers and tents. So at this point it's almost 8:30pm and we now find ourselves with no place to stay. Karl didn't care. We ended up at a motel for the night. He was very arrogant and told me I should have read the website clearly (I did and didn't see and thing about no tents ). After 7 hours of driving we left in search of a motel. I have over 40 years of experience in customer services. It's obvious that Karl had little if any. His admitting errors on his staff, the late time of day and his attitude really cause me to wonder how he keeps his job and why campers ever return again. If you check Yelp, Candy Hill has a 3 star rating. It is that high because a few campers gave 5 stars, most are 1 star. As an aside, my wife wanted a cup of coffee. It was $2. The clerk didn't have change for a $100 bill and if she used her credit card there was an additional $5. You would think that after all the crap they put us through it would have been on the house. I cannot stress enough for folks to stay away from this place. Also suggest Karl take a few courses on Customer Service!!! You have been warned. Check out Yelp. read more

We stayed here 3 nts over a weekend while we were waiting for a part to be delivered at the local Camping World. After 2 nts with just electric at the Camping World parking lot, we really didn't want to stay there over the weekend. We made same-day reservations at Candy Hill. They didn't have any pull-thrus with 50amp so we ended up with a back-in site with 50 amp FHU. The road into the campground is two-lane, a little tight for our 40' motorhome and toad. The roads inside the campground are both paved and gravel but wide and mostly well-kept. The sites are gravel with grass. Our site was level and overlooking the rv storage sites. We had plenty of room to open our slides and awning without encroaching on our neighbors. We could see the interstate and hear it outside but inside our MH it didn't bother us. There were quite a number of longterm campers here as well. The young men in the office were very professional, polite and helpful. We were escorted to our site. Because it got down into the 30s at night when we were there in early Nov, they shut off the water at 8:30pm (if you're hooked up, they actually remove your hose and chain up the water faucet) and turned it back on the next morning at 8:30 or when the temps go above 36 degrees. This was never a problem for us, although we did hear our neighbor complain about how he didn't like someone touching his fresh water hose without his permission. So if you're like him, do it yourself before they do it for you. This was a quiet campground but it was November so I'm sure summers are pretty busy. It's just off the interstate so it's a good campground to stop over for a night or two. It has one of the nicest and largest dog parks I've ever seen and our dogs thoroughly enjoyed it. They also provide doggy bags and trash bins at convenient places in the park. Really enjoyed our stay here especially with their close proximity to the interstate. I only wish they had more available 50 amp, full hookup pull-thru sites for those who just want to stop over for a night or two and not unhook their toad. read more

As we were pulling past the office, the manager/owner came flying across the sites in a golf cart, sliding to a stop, jumping out and yelling and berating for not having the pass visible. Could have been handled using customer service, but he chose to be a jerk. They also don't mention the 4 lane divided hwy ADJOINS the property on one side, and a 4 lane hwy is 1/2 mile from the entrance. 24/7 road noise, regardless of location. stay somewhere else. read more

This was our first stay at Candy Hill, possibly our last. I don't have an issue with gravel sites as long as there's some gravel. These sites haven't seen gravel for several years, much to much mud. This is Northern Virginia so remember you ofter see afternoon rain in August so mid is an issue. If you're staying overnight the internet is fine,if you plan on an extended stay expect to use your cell service for internet access or pay extra as the Candy Hill "free internet" is for 24 hours, then you pay or wait 24 hours for another free period. Enjoyed this quite quant campground. Clean bathhouse and great camp store. Convenient to all the museums, history and entertainment in Winchester. Candy Hill Camp Ground - Campgrounds Near Me - Winchester, Virginia

One and Done. My Daughter and Husband live close to this area and all our families got together for their wedding. We were excited about this campground because it's the perfect distant between us. I had read a couple of reviews about the rudeness from Management but I always try and look beyond those and give the place a chance. I followed the signs and stopped at the point where I needed to register. A man at the counter checked us in and called a fellow on a golf cart to get us to our site. I always appreciate that service. I needed a tape measure so I walked back to the store. As I entered the Office, the man that checked us in was telling a young Lady behind the counter to "Get that sh$t out of here and why did they put it here". I responded with "ooogh, someone said a bad word!" He looked at me in not a happy way lol. I had to wait til his inventory was gone before making my purchase. I told the little girl "Jaye" that I was happy he left the store and that I could tell that she was too. She was so sweet and informative. I went back in later for supplies and he was back. I ask if he was the owner and he said yes and his name was Carl. I told him that this was the best camping store that I had ever been in. He responded with nothing! Not a thank you of any kind. I just flat out ask him if he ever took a vacation and he responded with "sometimes". Well, the man needs a vacation! I realized that this is the guy that all the bad reviews are about so I did my best to avoid him the next three days. Today my daughter and husband stopped by the campground. I told her to check in, pay the $8 fee each to sit with us for a couple of hours. Well did she do that? NO! And then they parked in the road which did not block traffic but made it more difficult to get around. They had broke 3 rules. No checking in, no payment and they parked in the road. We were sitting in the camper and there was a knock at the door. It was the Almighty Carl. At the door. He was saying very rudely that if you like your car you should move it. Someone just missed it by an inch and they blew their horn twice. I honestly believe he was lying. 4 of us did not hear a horn. He continued about the possibly of hitting the car, rudely. I challenged him with. "I'm sure they would be polite and ask us to move the car before they hit it!" He started in again about them hitting the car. I challenged him again and then once more until he drove off on his little Police kart. I'm not going to let you, Carl, talk to me or my family like that. That's why you drive off! You don't like being stood up to do you? I went to the store to file a complaint to Carl, about Carl. He wasn't their but I bet he was standing behind in the office listening. I told the nice kid that Carl was an "Ass" and I came by to file a complaint about Carl and to let him know I was there and we did not appreciate his behavior. Another frequent camper behind me agreed that Carl is not a nice guy. All the other staff that I dealt with was very nice. This dude wakes up everyday with a vendetta against his guest. He thrives off finding someone breaking a rule and does not have the ability to politely approach a situation. Please read all the negative reviews! If you want a place to relax and enjoy yourself, it will be hard to do that here. The Traffic on the highway is very loud as well, maybe that's why 4 of us did not hear a horn blow, if one actually blew. Carl needs to back out and let the Staff run this park because he sure could learn some customer service by watching Jaye. Carl needs to sell this park and find something to do that he enjoys because he hates his work life for sure! But then again he may enjoy being rude and attempting to ruin peoples vacations and camping trips. Carl, this was a one and done for me and my family with you and your camp ground.
