Come for the railfanning, stay for the history…read more I first learned about Harpers Ferry, WV while sourcing stock footage for work. I came across the same clip in a rail safety ad, which made me look up directions to Harpers Ferry from DC. The historic park/town is served by the very MARC trains that pass outside my DC window each afternoon. You can describe Harpers Ferry as *deceptively* close because it's a 90 minute train ride, with planes flying into Dulles close enough to make out the airline. Looking for hotels there, Stonehouse Bed & Breakfast was the first that came up, with great reviews. Chris was very helpful and responsive via text and email. I booked the Top Room, which was $170 for a night including taxes. The quaint B&B has three accessible floors, as the family naturally lives onsite. The first floor is the main entrance with the common/dining areas, and the patio overlooking Maryland Heights and the Potomac/Shenandoah Rivers. The second floor has more rooms, one with a full balcony. And the third floor is the Top Room, with windows overlooking each side of the vintage building. If you Google pictures of Harpers Ferry, Stonehouse is in nearly all of the shots, since the balconies are front and center of the skyline. The town itself is like a real life snow globe. But the B&B, the litany of museums, eateries and shoppes around it, as well as the train station directly across the street make it an overall ideal place to stay, be it for hiking, or for something else: A love of trains is what brought me to Stonehouse, so take note that rail traffic can be heavy in certain times of the day. But the light rumbles also helped put me to sleep in the already soft, cozy bed. A container of water was provided, and while glasses should have been cleaned of dust first, it was still a really nice touch. The room also had playing cards, ear plugs, plenty books and a whole lounge chair. Checkin was a simple set of instructions at the door with my name on it, with checkout simply being your absence at the appropriate time. In my case, I only booked an overnight stay, getting in at 8pm and leaving around 6:30am, with checkout/checkin being the traditional 11am/4pm. While I didn't stay for complementary breakfast, I did catch a stellar sunrise between the mountains, as well as nature footage from the neighboring park. All of that to say, I definitely look to return to Stonehouse B&B later this year.

This B&B is located right in the heart of Harper's Ferry, giving walking access to stores, restaurants, and historic sights. Trains do come at all times of the night, so ear plugs are recommended (which would be needed anywhere in town!). Very much worth it!

I suppose many have written about the physical beauty of the town, but there's also beauty in the knowledge that small town America still exists. Honest, friendly, community minded people are the real beauty of Harpers Ferry. If you are like me, from out of the area, I encourage you to walk through town at least twice a day. I found the many deer that call HF home beautiful, and the fireflies (dusk) magical. The rivers give a certain comfort in knowing that the town will go on forever. I hope that I never grow tired of these things. Lynn and Christian, the Rockhaven Hosts, welcomed me into their home shortly after the covid restrictions were lifted. I was reassured by their words and actions that every precaution known to science was being observed. Both Hosts were gracious and attentive, and the room met all my needs (and then some!). Terrific gardens, quiet neighborhood, historic main building all spell class and charm. There is not a single thing I would change. As I prepare for my return home, I feel like I'm saying goodbye to family. I would definitely stay here again, and would highly recommend Rockhaven B&B to anyone looking for lodging in historic Harpers Ferry, WV.

They refurbished the old lockhouses which were once occupied by lock keepers who worked 24 hours around the clock to open the locks for boats and small barges. Three lockhouses are available to rent, lockhouse 6 is the only one with running water , electricity and heat (a necessity for MD winters). Bring food to cook, blankets, and linens- the rest is there for you to enjoy. It was a wonderful experience. The house was immaculate, cozy and clean. It sleeps 8, with two bedrooms upstairs (two twin beds in each) and a comfy pull out sofa in the living room on the middle level. The bathroom (equipped with full shower/tub) was in the basement- the stone walls provided little insulation and became uncomfortably cold during trips down there and before and after showers. The Lockhouse provided all the amenities of home including coffee makers, pots, pans, dishes, cleaning supplies, refrigerator, stove, oven, etc. Maps, books, and photographs from the era decorated the house and the beautiful winter scenery of the Potomac River provided landscape. The Lockhouses can be rented as pit stops for bikers and hikers making their way down the C&O canal from Pittsburg. They can be rented for romantic getaways or surprise birthdays and bachelorette parties. Lockhouse 6 is only a stones throw from Georgetown on Clara Barton Parkway, so it's close to the city for a night (or two) out.

All four of their largest rooms that we occupied were spacious, with king beds and spa tubs with separate showers. All were well maintained and clean upon check-in. We had no complaints. I'm not sure when we will return to the area, but when we do, we will not hesitate to return!

She cordially gave us a 20 min tour around the property, which was built in 1908, and even gave me a bonus tour of the other rooms afterwards. She kindly answered all of our questions and didn't rush us. The Peacecock Room is the most spacious and best room (aside from the bridal suite), elaborately decorated in peacocks. We loved it! The little touches like the handmade soap, a set of wine glasses, and a wine opener made the stay so memorable and special. While the rooms aren't temperature controlled, the electric flameless fireplace kept the room warm. The double capacity jacuzzi was perfect for my hubby and I and even had lights (some of the other rooms have smaller jacuzzi, so be sure to check). The rooms were clean minus a couple of lady bugs and stink bugs (which is too be expected out in the country). Dr. Fauci's assistant stayed here and Manisha informed us of the extensive sanitation process, even the pillows and decorations are quarantined for 6 days! The backyard is well groomed and really spacious with a nice patio and heat lamp, which kept us warm sitting outside in the frigid winter. Our dog loved running around! You can see the stars and constellations really well. It would make a great wedding venue! The Christmas decorations around the property are really nice. The owners really go the extra mile and put a lot of TLC into the property. The 6 course breakfast is delicious and bursting with flavor. Between the veggie quiche, cheesy potatoes, scone, pancakes, yogurt, and fresh OJ, I was stuffed! The fresh butterscotch scone was divine and devoured my mine and my hubby's! The cheesy potato had a nice spicy kick. Everything was so fresh and delicious. All the courses come out at once on a large tray. While my hubby and I chose to sit at the communal table (the chairs are roughly 6 feet apart), you can take the tray up to your room. Manisha and her family greeted us and thoroughly explained the dishes and chatted with us for a bit, even her son made an appearance! The bed and breakfast has a nice bar with wine, cider, and alcohol based on an honor code system. Water and soda is complementary, they even had Coke 0! The complementary fudgy brownies by the breakfast area during the day were sweet and tasty. Again the little complimentary stuff gives this bed and breakfast a nice resort feel. Very relaxing stay and looking forward to coming back!

What I can say is that staying at the Angler's Inn was like staying at a friend's house - it was comfortable, clean, and safe. The wide front porch, complete with cushioned swing and potted plants, beckons you to come sit a while. The parlor, a common area with cozy sofas, was stocked with cookies, books on various subjects, magazines, sodas and ice, and a variety of tea bags and hot water. The Fenwick room was well-appointed: the sheets were soft and smelled freshly laundered, the towels were white as snow and as fluffy as fresh powder, and the en suite bathroom contained both a claw foot tub and lavender bath milk. Debbi, the Angler's Inn's owner and chef, is friendly, funny, and informative. She's a whiz in the kitchen, offers helpful suggestions about local trails, restaurants, and historic sites, and repository of information about local events, politics, and hot topic issues. Debbi is solicitous, but tactfully so, which I credit to her 20-plus years of experience running a B&B - she is good at gauging whether you are up for a chat or want to be left alone. As I had never stayed at a B&B before, I was worried that it would involve awkward interactions with the owner and/or other guests. These worries proved to be ill-founded as I genuinely enjoyed my interactions with both Debbi and the other guests. The Angler's Inn is centrally located between Harpers Ferry's Lower Town, where you can find the train station, the National Historic Park tours, and several historic buildings, and Harpers Ferry's upper town/Bolivar, where restaurants and stores mingle with residences, churches, and historic buildings along the main street. It's also a couple buildings over from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters, which is worth a visit. For folks who want to visit without a car, this is an ideal location as the inn is a short (albeit steep) walk up from the train station and in walking distance from trails, restaurants, and historic sites. TL;DR: 10/10 would stay here again.

So many beautiful nooks and crannies to sit and read or play games or just nap. The pool and hot tub are gorgeous and Logan at the pool bar will take amazing care of you! They provide a complimentary breakfast of freshly cooked eggs, meats, and biscuits/scones. The lunch and dinner menus are varied and everything we had was delicious. A winding road through a rocky valley with a mountain stream that flows to the Lost River. Then you turn into the Guesthouse and the stunning main building and cute cabins are so perfectly placed on the property with lovely landscaping. Walk into the main lobby to be greeted by Gary, one of the owners. He was super pleasant and took us on a tour of the property pointing out the dining room, bar, pool (although it was still closed for winter), hot tub and sauna, gym, multiple media rooms, game rooms and lounge areas, and then our room in the Hobson Cabin. The room was well appointed and clean. The shower was beautiful and had great water pressure and temperature. The balcony had wonderful views of the parks close by. A country breakfast is served daily at 9 and is a great start to the day. The dining room is open in the evening for drinks and dinner with a menu for anyone! Gary and Jesse are always close by if you ever need anything and make you feel most welcome. We can't wait to visit again in the summer so we can make full use of the pool and enjoy some nearby hiking!

The basement apartment is self sufficient, so we did not have the "bed and breakfast" experience of sharing, but that's OK for us.. We had our own full bath, our own exterior entrance, etc. Rates vary, but this was such a better deal than any hotel room, how can you go wrong?

Our host, Dana, was very friendly and, since our sight-seeing plans were kind of up-in-the-air, gave us lots of good advice on places to go and things to see. The room was really cute and clean. The bed was amazingly comfortable -- one of those adjustable tempurpedic mattresses. I'm not sure if every room has one or if it was just our room, but it sure made it hard to want to get out of bed. There is free wi-fi and continental breakfast downstairs in the morning. This place is a great alternative to the pricey hotels around DC -- it has a private, relaxing feel and yet is close enough to the Metro that it is also pretty convenient. We would definitely stay here again.

First time in Harper's Ferry and first stay at a B&B in many years and our time there could not have been any better. The property is secluded, private, and the views are spectacular. Home furnishings are very tasteful and inviting. Conveniently located to downtown and the national park. Clean and comfortable. Best of all is Annie who hails from Ireland. Professional and inviting and attended to all our wishes including the one's she thought of for us. We will definitely be back for many more visits. read more

This was our second visit to The Ledge House. Our first stay was comfortable and relaxing, and the second solidified the B&B as one of our favorite getaways. Annie, the innkeeper, is wonderful company and a gracious host. The team facilitated a pick-up when we were stranded with our bikes due to a bridge closure. Will greeted us upon arrival, showed us to our room, and spent about ten minutes describing the local dining options in the surrounding towns. The inn is an excellent base for exploring Antietam National Battlefield (it actually sits on a portion of the battlefield itself) and visiting nearby attractions, such as Harpers Ferry and Shepherdstown. Our room was comfortable, and the bathroom had been recently remodeled. The property also features a lovely garden that attracts a wide variety of birds. I especially enjoyed sitting on the porch with a good book while watching the birds. It was incredibly relaxing. The breakfast portion of this bed and breakfast exceeded our expectations. Miriam's baking skills are truly exceptional! The homemade pastries were always fresh and delicious, the coffee was excellent, and they happily accommodated our dietary needs. They also go out of their way to source fresh, minimally processed ingredients for their meals, which we greatly appreciated. The highlight of our stay, however, was getting to know Miriam, Will, and Hamish (the dog). We genuinely enjoyed our conversations with them throughout our visit, and they made us feel less like hotel guests and more like friends or family visiting their home. They are warm, engaging people, and we could easily imagine being friends with them. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The breakfast alone makes the Inn at Antietam worth the visit, but when you combine it with the beautiful house, peaceful setting, and genuinely welcoming hosts, it becomes an exceptional experience. When we arrived we spoke in person and he had a GREAT recommendation for dinner - The Press Room. Even though it was a MONDAY, he thought we should get reservations. I'm so HAPPY we followed his advice! The meal was wonderful and the ambiance great. (We also enjoyed his next recommendation- Bistro 112, for our Anniversary dinner) Then we met Miriam (another great conversation), and Hamish (the FRIENDLY dog). Over the next two mornings we ate a delicious breakfast with so much great food we skipped lunch both days! What a great visit! (I bet we stay again sometime)

My family went to Lily B&B for Thanksgiving. There were five of us, all adults, all family. It…read moreis an adorable place. We had the upstairs of the house. Self-entry was very easy. There is one bedroom with a queen-sized bed, and then there is a loft with a double bed. The ladder goes straight up to the loft. Getting up to the loft is not for the faint of heart. Three of the adults were in their 50s, and two not in the best of shape, so there was no way we could get into the loft. The rest of us slept on the main level. There is also a blow-up bed that was easy to use. The bathroom was very nice. The kitchen had everything we needed. The garden was cute. My sister and I read out on the swing during the day and at night we all sat around the fire. We took our two dogs, also. We walked them a few times during the day around the neighborhood. There was some open space if you walk behind the house and then turn right at the next street. . The host, Shawn, was available whenever we needed him. For the breakfast part, due to Covid, you let them know beforehand what you want and Lily B&B leaves it in the kitchen and you make it yourself, which was fine with me. Shawn also makes an awesome quiche which we all enjoyed. We had a lot of fun. We've never gone away for Thanksgiving but we just might do it again next year.

You know the team works well when shortly after pictures or videos are taken they are quickly uploaded to be shared with the party the same day. I've never seen a team work this efficiently. Wedding food is always important I had the short rib here and it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Everything you possibly need for a wedding is on the premise. The after party taco bar was a nice addition. Each of the cabins in the main barn had fast WiFi, AC units and clean bathrooms. Highly recommend coming here if you want a staycation or looking to plan a large event.

Stayed for a week. Wish it had been longer!…read more Totally awesome 1807 wood home that has been completely raised and rebuilt near Leesburg, Virginia. Featured in This Old House Magazine, this 18th Century log home has been lovingly restored with colonial detail and modern conveniences. It is a perfect private getaway, full of warmth and charm. Owners, Gina and Ted Blake are unbelievable hosts. The house sleeps five people comfortably, and includes a modern kitchen and (single) bathroom, as well as, central heat and air conditioning. The modern kitchen comes stocked with fresh fruit, coffee, eggs, cereals and other breakfast items - if you remain hungry at 11am, it's your own fault! The food and pantry are totally stocked with every need. Only thing, don't expect a oven... but there is a microwave. The kitchen otherwise comes with a full size refrigerator, stove top (with pans and pots), toaster and charcoal grill. We took our horse there, and enjoyed the facilities... as did our horse. She didn't want to get back on the trailer when it was time to leave! Bottom line: We're already planning to book again in a year.

It was a perfect end to our snowy Saturday! We drove up to the house all lit up under a blanket of snow and quickly were oohing and ahhing at the fantastic interior. Gina and Ted are friendly and laid-back, and the house itself is comfortable and cozy. The kitchen lacks an oven so we were glad we had planned to make a big pot of risotto for dinner, but they generously stock the fridge with breakfast foods--and we arrived to find a beautiful lemon cake, as well (Gina sometimes brings leftover stock from a nearby cake shop for guests of the cottage). The house sleeps five very comfortably--we were asked ahead of time whether we preferred 5 twins or 2 kings and a twin, which was really nice since we were five girls traveling together. There is only one bathroom, but it worked out fine, even with all females :) The central heat was great--we had anticipated a chilly old cottage but it was REALLY warm and cozy inside--the perfect spot for cooking together and playing Taboo :) We plan to go back next year (if not sooner). The ONLY thing that we really wished it had was a working fireplace--there is a fireplace but it does not appear to work. There's an outdoor fire pit, but there was too much snow to enjoy that the night we were there. So we made our s'mores with homemade marshmallows in the microwave :) The furnishings are quaint, the house is adorable, and the setting is beautiful. We opened the door in the morning to find Ted and Gina's dog sitting on the porch, and they came over and chatted with us while they fed the horses. They were extremely friendly, and told us to stay as long as we wanted since there were no guests the following night. If you stay, be sure to check out the photo album that documents them rebuilding the house--it's pretty amazing!
