I'm a fan of this heavily wooded little gem because it's not that easy to find unless you live in the area, which keeps the few trails relatively uncrowded (except on summer weekends). Tryon Creek runs through the bottom of the shady park, and there's a small clearing with a playground and a couple of picnic tables if you want to enjoy the water view - though be warned the creek becomes just barely a trickle come summertime. There are some pretty good hills throughout and the trails, which include several bridges, are fairly well maintained so you can put together a couple of decent, if short, hikes here. Things do get pretty muddy in winter though. Venture across Boones Ferry road and you can even hook up with the larger trail network at nearby Tryon Creek State Park to string together a more challenging stroll. Parking is pretty limited in the small areas on either side of the park, but that's usually not a problem.

It's spectacular! There are lots of other wildflowers, too, so keep your eyes out for the many tiny varieties. There's pink sea blush, western yellow buttercup, Oregon grape, pink purslane, trillium (even plum colored ones,) saxifrages and more. I even spotted a handful of white camas amongst the thousands of blue. It's a gorgeous walk, immersed in nature, with birds chirping, bees doing their pollinating thing, butterflies, squirrels, hummingbirds, and even turkey vultures flying above. There are also osprey. Its's an easy trail, .8 miles if you stay in the main loop. With just slight elevation in a few places and sometimes narrow areas, the vast majority of people, including kids, will find it an easy, pleasant walk. The trail itself is dirt and wood chips, and definitely some rocks and basalt in places, with wooden planks guiding you through the pastel wildflower prairies. However, if you require a cane or walker, this trail can be challenging in some parts. I'm using a cane due to labral tear, and the few places where there were slightly steep rocky paths, I waited until a passerby came by and asked for assistance. Fortunately fellow hikers were kind and happy to lend a hand or shoulder. There was a group of four with walkers and canes and they only made it a third of the way and had to turn back. In some parts the path is too narrow or too steep for a walker. The nature reserve is at the end of a neighborhood street so on a weekend in April or May when wildflowers are in bloom, parking is challenging. Definitely go on a weekday if your schedule permits. There is a porta potty on site. And a volunteer on the path should you have any questions about the wildlife and plants you encounter. Dogs are not allowed.

If I lived a lot closer, I will definitely come here regularly just for a nice fresh air walk. Theoretically, there is also a free boat dock, but at the time of writing, a very large tree is fallen across it. Restrooms and garbage are maintained by Oregon State Parks. When I visited, it was pretty clean. The trail along the river is very pretty, although I was only able to access about a mile of it before it got too flooded to hike through. I noticed lots of poisonous plants including poison oak, snowberries, and hemlock. But also tons of moss, lichens, and ferns. In addition to the picnic tables in the picnic areas, there were also several solitary tables set out along the river. This is great for a more solitary picnic, taking a break during a long bike ride, or getting some privacy for drawing or Journaling. Overall just about as good as it gets for free.

They don't have any trail maps posted, however, so we weren't sure of the distance of the trails or where they went. One trail follows close to the river, and that was nice, with a mix of open sun and shaded forest. The trails were mostly flat dirt or gravel, no strenuous inclines. There's a large off-leash dog exercise area. Dogs are supposed to be on a leash in the rest of the park, but sadly most owners were just letting their dogs run the trails off-leash. They have picnic tables & a good, clean restroom facility as well.

The promenade…read moreoffers gorgeous views of Oregon City that change seasonally, and allows visitors an opportunity to learn about the city's history through signage and information kiosks. The stretch overlooking Willamette Falls near the VFW parking lot is my favorite, boasting stunning views of Willamette Falls. In addition, the pollinator garden with lavender, poppies and other colorful flowers makes my heart skip a beat in the spring and early summer months. There's no better site in town for an impromptu picnic or an afternoon stroll.
