I got the mandatory safety video, they did all the paper work for me and then I began my driving! The package came with 10 lessons, my strategy was to book back to back lessons on the weekend to get the most practice in at once. The instructors were very kind and knowledgeable in this area. They were able to read that I had more confidence in driving and on my first lesson made me go on Mcguinness blvd. They give excellent pointers and tips in passing the exam and help you every step of the way. They went as far as to take me to Long Island where they had scheduled an exam for me. Overall. I think it took me about a month, but I had passed on my first time!!!! I recommended this place to my friend and my sister, they each took them and both passed on their first try as well. I did receive a refund for my unused portions of the package I paid for. I enrolled as a complete beginner and made that very clear from the start. Instead of receiving patient instruction, I experienced an instructor (Michael) who became frustrated with beginner mistakes and raised his voice during lessons. It was also extremely fast paced for a 20 lesson full package deal. On my third day I was being taught a 3 point turn and parallel parking when I was not comfortable turning onto roads and being centered on roads. There were also communication and scheduling issues. On one occasion, I arrived for what I believed was my scheduled lesson, only to find out the time had been changed without any phone call, email, or text notification. Despite the instructor being available, I spent approximately 40 minutes sitting in the vehicle while he stopped at McDonald's and handled personal matters rather than conducting the lesson. During multiple lessons, the instructor took lengthy personal phone calls while I was in the car, including highly personal conversations that contained inappropriate language. As a student learning to drive for the first time, I expected my instructor's full attention and professionalism, not distractions and personal matters. What ultimately made me decide to leave was being told after only three lessons that my remaining lessons and road test had been canceled because I was allegedly "too nervous." I had attended every lesson, was eager to learn, and had only just begun driving. Although I was offered another instructor, by that point I had lost confidence in the school's professionalism and chose to seek instruction elsewhere. Additionally, while waiting for one of my lessons, I overheard another student discussing a negative experience he had with an instructor named Frank. Under normal circumstances I would not place much weight on another student's experience alone. However, after everything I had personally experienced, hearing another student express similar frustrations further reduced my confidence in the school as a whole. During COVID, I worked from home, and it freed my time up so that I could finally take lessons as an adult. The pandemic also convinced me that maybe having a license would be a good thing to have in major emergencies. I started taking lessons in November 2020 at MAR; I did the required 5-hour class with them and I took 45-minute driving lessons, usually once per week, until my road test in May 2021. I passed my road test on the first shot. Jose is the main driving instructor and he is excellent: patient, knowledgable, and he can prepare you well for the road test. I had absolutely zero faith in my ability to do this at my age, and I am now driving a lot (mostly rentals until I get my used car...hopefully soon). Lessons at MAR are affordable and the team at MAR is very much like a family. I am actually BACK at MAR taking highway lessons...just to feel more comfortable merging and driving at higher speeds. MAR helped me accomplish this important goal in my life, late as it was, and I am grateful to them for their help.
