Grouping students of mixed ages into independence levels is something that I wish more schools adopted. Focus on mastery is another thing I like. We also liked the extensive use of placement tests to figure out the right level of classes for students. Small class sizes made it easier to learn new concepts in an effective way. If your child needs to learn at a different pace (faster or slower) than the regular progression of grades would allow in a school with big classrooms, you will love how the curriculum is tailored to each student. My favorite class was the studio which combined interdisciplinary knowledge into a a sequence of projects under a single theme in a school year. One things that some families may have a hard time adjusting to is the pace of changes. This is a "lab" school which means that new ideas are introduced to improve how the school works and if the ideas don't work well, they are replaced with new ideas. This also causes a higher then ideal turnover in staff but I think that this may be a good price to pay for access to innovative teaching.

I am blown away at how well each of the teachers understands the Ventana goals and curiosity-based (Reggio) method of teaching, and how they can explain how classroom structure, lessons and activities relate to it. And at how the kids understand it, and apply it. This is not just a stale mission statement taped to a wall somewhere. It's a real intellectual commitment and culture, and it shows. We've been at Ventana preschool for a couple of years, and a few other great things stand out. First, everyone cares. The environment is nurturing, and beyond that, deeply invested in the long-term success of your child. Second, the parents community is wonderful. We've met great new friends through the program, and been delighted by the way people show up to activities and care for each other with the parent groups. And we've found folks to be pretty down to earth for a Bay Area private school (and we've seen a couple other programs, so this is at least a somewhat qualified comparison). Lastly, we've seen the kind of kids that graduate out of the program. The Ventana philosophy really seems to deliver. The leadership recently noted that in an incoming Stanford class, there are 3 Ventana alums. 3 students out of a single-class graduating size is impressive. More impressive is how well-rounded the 5th graders are. They are articulate, grounded, capable of holding complex abstract extemporaneous conversations with adults. One of the key words at Ventana is "curiosity" and my kids are always very curious :) Also, they all feel cared and loved by the whole school community, and it's making them nourish very strong self-confidence. At play dates, parks, outside of school activities or even at supermarket, many people have asked where my kids go to school because they play collaboratively, show kindness and have good leadership. I always feel that I myself get great support by school. Small conversations with Ventana teachers at pickup and drop off are always positive and encouraging, and school began providing different kinds of instructive parenting classes after Pandemic and that's very helpful too. Preschool: Lots of hands-on activities The teachers prepare a variety kinds of hands-on activities every day. They are incredible and I can't do the same at home. Through those sensory activities, kids explore their own wonder and learn so naturally. Elementary: Depth of learning Ventana provides a great teacher-student ratio in each classroom. So, each student can get full attention from teachers, and I'm always amazed to see how well the teachers know about my children. The teachers catch when the students need support, and they don't miss the cues when the students are ready to have challenges. That creates ideal educational environment where every single child will acquire firm reading/writing/speaking/communication skills and mathematical ability. In my sense, it's more important how deep they understand rather than how advance they learn, and in this way Ventana alumni are so ready for middle school.

I am now at an elite university on the East Coast…read more I think that Pinewood is excellent because the teachers are able to provide you with one-on-one attention. Very good for college recs obviously. Public school ones might be very general... Anyways, teachers will help you during lunch and even after school, when they are not being paid. I think it's cool how they have math help hours after school with Mr. Green (if he even works there). My favorite math teacher was Ms. Walters (Genius lady :) ) Overall, the homework is not that excessive, and, more often than not, if we are ahead of the material, we can use the time to work on assignments for a portion of the class. The English department is good, however, I would appreciate it if they would have been stricter on us. Honestly, the longest paper I ever wrote was a 10 page paper for AP US Gov, and we allocated class time to write it. In English the longest paper was about 5 pages. I wish that the length and standards for papers would increase as one takes more advanced courses. The English department prepares you well for writing 25 minute essays for AP exams, but does not prepare you for 10-20 page papers you have to write as a college freshman at top colleges (Ivy leagues, top LAC, or top UC's). Please add a writing intensive course for seniors that IS NOT GRADED, that way students can learn to write college level papers without feeling so much pressure. Just make it a graduation requirement. The Spanish language department seemed to be more demanding than the French language department. I think because Ms. Schmidt was very very strict. I think she retired now. However, Mr. Tezlaff and Madame Daniel were/are very approachable and would always practice French with you whenever you need. They want you to succeed on the National French Contest and do well on AP French! Merci beaucoup mes professeurs. If your child does have a learning disability, the school will accommodate with longer test times, separate exam rooms, and sometimes extra hours of help with a teacher, so long as you can provide a paper verifying the disability. Also, of course disability is confidential information and students are not let known of classmates' disability. It is very common for children at PW to suffer from social anxiety, test anxiety, and depression though. Extracurriculars such as sports were really fun and the coaches (thanks Craig and Jackee) are really passionate! My main complaint is that the school lacks racial diversity. Of course this is because those who can afford the school are primarily White and Asian (South Asian as well as East Asian). When there were black and brown students (some of whom are on academic/athletic scholarship) many would feel ostracized and out of place and often leave after freshman year. Please provide counseling services/ extra funding for students of color. I specifically remember always having to pay tons of money for new uniforms (they would change each season) and new equipment. I would have appreciated it if there was fund that could help scholarship students with sports/extracurricular fees.

I say this because we feel like the best education we got, and the hardest we ever worked in K-12, was during our Pinewood years. What stands out to me is the fact that Pinewood did a wonderful job of enabling us to develop academically as well as artistically. They found a balance between the phonics-based Carden method, daily reading groups, math, science, and social studies classes, and the singing, drama, P.E., and art classes. Whenever I see Beatrix Potter books I flash back to 1st grade, and what would I do without my vast collection of oil paintings and clay sculptures of horses made during seven years of art, or my memories of being in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and "The Velveteen Rabbit" on the Pinewood stage. Pinewood was also strict in the sense that we feared the "demerit" and worse, "getting ten" which meant you had earned ten demerits that week and would have to see the principal. I think from that we learned responsibility and how to respect others, from our peers to our teachers. From following others in my class through Facebook updates and periodic announcements in the Los Altos Town Crier, I know many of us have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and earn PhDs in subjects like bioengineering, computer science (or English- me- maybe that's liability to the Pinewood reputation, hah). However, most of us also came from the kind of high achieving, upper middle class, occasionally dysfunctional families that make those kind of achievements seem average, and admittedly, I was a little bit of a snob coming out of Pinewood, thinking only bad students would "have" to go to a UC instead of an Ivy. In those ways, Pinewood isolated us from the realities that not every kid could have their own pony or live in their own estate, and that could certainly be held against the school, our parents, and us. Knowing what the tuition is now, I don't know how people can afford to send one, let alone multiple, kid(s) there, and I wonder if the class-based elitism is still pervasive. Weighing those two sides of the coin- the fantastic academic and artistic education against the narrow exposure to others from any other socio-economic or religious backgrounds (most of the kids in my class were from the dominant Pinewood Mormon families)- a Pinewood education might not be the right choice for everyone. However, I am still grateful for the academic foundation I received there, and the real world came anyway, after I left Pinewood.

The classes they need are available to them, there are so many leadership opportunities and volunteer opportunities for them here. Being a smaller size in number gives more students a chance to play sports and join other extra curricular activities as well. While all of the academic programs are all great, my favorite thing is that they have a worship time in the chapel everyday. The students also visit the churches and sing or play in the worship band. My daughter went to BK for two years, starting at 9 months old. In our search, we were specifically…read morelooking for a center-based daycare, small class sizes, and a warm environment. Class size is small in the infant room but I did not pay enough attention to the older classes. My daughter's last class (started at 23 months but not sure of the age cutoff) had 24 students with 3 teachers at one point and I believe it's down to 18 students with 3 teachers now. My daughter was getting sick very often and I wish I'd been more mindful about class sizes in the older classes in choosing her daycare. However, I think this is the price you pay when going for a center vs. in-home daycare. When touring BK, I noticed the admin seemed to know some of their students by name. My daughter had serious stranger danger so, a caring environment was a must. I was blown away specifically by Ms. Maria. She works mornings in the baby room and is the first teacher on site. If dropping off your child before 8:00, children go to Ms. Maria's room. My daughter's transition to daycare went well because of Ms. Maria. And by "well," I mean she stopped crying at drop-offs after a few weeks. Considering her strong stranger danger at the time, this was HUGE. I cried in my car the first time my daughter reached for Ms. Maria. But, I knew my daughter was comfortable so I was also very, very grateful. Two things I wish I asked about during the tour: 1. Allergy procedures 2. Teacher turnover 1. My daughter had a mild reaction to dairy. This was a new allergy at the time and was not yet confirmed by a doctor until after her start. We did inform the center of her allergies regardless. The center confirmed that this was added to their allergy list. However, my daughter was given dairy two days in a row. The second time being more bothersome, warranting a call home. The admin response was to send our daughter to school with food from home on the days when dairy was being served. However, their menu does not list allergens within the foods so we were guessing which foods did and did not have dairy. We were wrong a few times so we asked about including allergens in the menu. This was the managers reply: " We understand that when it comes to food allergies, we must take all precautions to avoid allergic reactions to products. When ordering in bulk and when the products are unavailable, we sometimes have to source some products from local stores. This can make it challenging to list allergens on the menu ahead of time." We were also told per the manager, Raji, that they would "check if adding any information to the menu is possible." No information was added. 2. The teacher turnover rate seems pretty high. At least 10 of my daughter's past teachers no longer seem to work there. And changes happen without informing the families, nor are there introductions, so there's always new faces in the rooms. Not sure if this is the norm in other centers or if teachers are unhappy at BK. Pros: - a handful of caring teachers - extracurriculars: yoga, soccer, and music (all of which my daughter LOVED) - academics in the oldest class (my daughter wasn't in this class but I've met a couple students from this class. They were certainly kinder-ready) - app with photos/videos/summaries of what students are learning and doing -- though very inconsistent. I'm not sure how often summaries are sent but at least once a month (photos are shared daily)

They organize fun celebrations for the holidays and put on plays or bring in trains or petting animals or parades. There are cameras in the kids' rooms but no noise (which I prefer as it offers the providers some privacy). I was never concerned about my child's safety there, but I did enjoy checking in every once in a while to see him reading or dancing or playing with friends. Haidee and Elvie do a great job of running the school, even in challenging times under various and confusing shelter in place orders. They were quick to install Covid safety protocols (including frequent staff testing) and open back up this summer. We so appreciate everything they have done for our son and dedication to their work. After entering the classroom, the teacher put the tea on a cabinet, which was fine. But a little later, she moved the hot tea to the table where the children were having snacks. I questioned the tour guide on the spot, and was told that the school provides complimentary drinks for teachers every day, and that this poses no safety risk since they've never had an incident where hot water was spilled on a child. This response shows that the school prioritizes not offending teachers over children's safety.

My son is trilingual and there were teachers that could communicate in all 3 languages. That was great. I love how each grade has its own play area. Mix up Fridays are fun so kids could explore other play areas. We looked forward to the activity of day table every morning. Each day was an amazing creation. For my 2 year old, I couldn't have chosen a better school. I toured all in the area and after careful evaluation we landed at this school for many reasons and very happy with that choice. We opted for 5, half days and it was perfect for my family and work/life balance.

She texted us pictures of the kids during their first few days there, which put us at ease. Seeing their happy faces in the pictures brings truth to the name of this daycare! She also sends weekly e-mails with pictures of the kids, of the meals, and of the activities that the kids do during the week. I honestly miss this very much! Canterbury has been part of our family's daily life for the past eight years, and what a tremendous blessing it has been. This ministry truly serves the Bay Area by making traditional Christian education both affordable and accessible to families and children in need. Through Canterbury, our children have built a deep and lasting foundation of faith. As parents, we have full confidence that they know who God is and understand their purpose as they grow and face the challenges of today's world. Even when confronted with the pressures of secular culture, they know where to turn, whom to trust, and how to stay grounded in truth. The academic excellence at Canterbury is equally impressive. It's remarkable to see young students confidently writing in perfect cursive and reading, writing, and even speaking Latin -- skills that set them apart and shape disciplined minds. Beyond academics and faith, the parent community has been a source of incredible encouragement and support. We've grown together, prayed together, and built friendships that will last a lifetime. We came to know about Canterbury Christian School through one of our church friends, and we immediately scheduled a visit. During our tour, we were warmly welcomed by the headmaster, Rev. Macias, and from that moment on, there was no turning back. We enrolled our daughter without hesitation, and we've witnessed her grow remarkably -- both spiritually and academically. The school fosters a wonderful Christ-centered culture and provides an atmosphere that is nurturing, disciplined, and uplifting. One of the standout features is their use of the ABEKA curriculum, a strong and structured academic program that not only challenges students but also equips them to face the world with confidence and conviction. As a past principal of Canterbury Christian School, I am very pleased to say the current administration has a wonderful grasp of the philosophy of Christian education. They have a desire to see children brought up in the way they should go. This includes their own young children. Their goal is to have a school where a child's character is developed to the glory of God in accordance with Scripture. Through the ABEKA and Shurley curriculum they strive for a solid academic foundation. Achievement is measured annually with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). They are energetic in their pursuit of extracurricular activities to enrich the students' learning experiences. Myself, my friends, and even my sibling followed the rules like everyone else, yet we were constantly singled out, blamed for situations we did not cause, and punished for things other students did right in front of staff who somehow never saw it, and the worst part is they acted like their uneven treatment was justified instead of admitting their own bias. Over time it became painfully clear that they were not interested in supporting us, only in protecting a narrative where certain families stayed untouchable and the rest of us were easy targets whenever they needed someone to blame. The way they spoke to certain kids was shockingly mean and downright cruel, and I experienced it firsthand from certain staff who twisted the truth whenever it suited them. This school loves to package itself as nurturing and community driven, where a kind and empathetic community is the main focus, but the reality was a strange, exhausting experience where favoritism thrived, accountability disappeared, and the truth was always whatever made them look good; if you are thinking of sending your kids here, I would seriously reconsider, because no child should have to carry the weight of adults who cannot handle their own insecurities or responsibilities. St. Nicholas may your "polished" reputation shine bright enough to distract from the truth.

She also loves all the other teachers Kalpana, Martina, and Mika so much and she likes to review the photos and videos with us of all the fun activities like making pancakes, yoga, gardening, water play, painting, and so on. There are also occasional events for families to attend like an Art Reception and Spring Sing or "Circle of Friends" that have been a great delight. Our daughter has learned and grown so much since starting there, especially socially. The gang of similarly-aged children love to greet each other with adorable hugs and, thanks to the teachers' guidance, she has also connected so well with many of the older children. Whenever we talk to any of the teachers, we get such a strong sense of them caring and paying attention to the children's specific needs. We feel she is greatly taken care of here.

A stellar child-to-teacher ratio (the place we were coming from -- a corporate daycare -- had fewer teachers and twice as many students per class!), with truly loving and supportive staff. Looking at the daily (extensive) footage of the happenings of each day is a highlight for our family each night -- and really gives me a sense of what my kiddo's day was like. I'm always charmed by how much fun it looks like all the kids are having as well as the thoughtfully curated weekly books and activities. The Director (Stacey) is honestly one of my favorite people in the world, and all the teachers are so kind and caring. I appreciate the school's conscientiousness regarding student health protocol (e.g., immediate notification if a student has a communicable illness, reasonable Covid measures). My child adores going to school each morning and drop-off is a breeze. For anyone looking for an incredible play-based preschool, I definitely recommend (what my preschooler calls) "St. Tim Tim Timmys"!
