We just had a few hours in Rome, and after a wonderful golf cart tour, I knew the one thing I wanted to do was try a porchetta sandwich before we left. We used yelp to find this place and hoofed it over in almost 100F weather. It's interesting, there are actually two Cantinas DEI Papi a couple of doors down from another . One was bustling and super busy and packed, the other empty. They claim they're the same place, I'm not sure why one was so much more popular. I ordered my porchetta, and it was yummy, but I think the walk in the heat made me not really able to eat much. Both shops are small and a little cramped, but clean and well kept. read more

I say this with complete honesty, the two sandwiches I had from here are probably the best I've had in my LIFE!!! This place is the epitome of a small Italian hole in the wall that is serving world class food. If you eat pork, then do yourself a favor and get a sandwich that has the porchetta on it, if the sandwich you want doesn't have porchetta then add it! Occasionally you eat foods that you later have daydreams about, their sandwiches reach that rarified air of greatness. Tiny little hole in the wall gem. We almost passed it (maybe because I'm always looking everywhere)- I was so happy we didn't miss it. What a lovely place. Contemporary music playing was very welcoming. The decor is exceptionally charming. The girl was happy to explain the menu to us. We ordered a prosciutto sando to split. Came by for lunch on the way from Colosseum to Trevi Fountain. Nice and quiet, we were one of few people dining. We tried charcuterie boards - medium and small sizes. They come with a variety of meat, cheese, fruit and toasts with spreads. They had a good variety of tasty things and pretty to look at too. I had a glass of white wine. We also took a couple of sandwiches to go, including a porchetta and pork jowel (great porchetta, jowel was a bit much for a whole sandwich). Hard to beat such a good lunch near the Trevi fountain. We got a medium sized board of meat/cheese and we walked away very happy/satisfied. The meats were all fresh tasting, and the cheese was fantastic. I have to say the presentation was a nice touch to add on to how tasty the food was. This food would of cost double in the United States if you could even find it laid out like this in the first place. The employees were also very nice/helpful to us foreigners! The reviews don't lie!! This place is truly phenomenal, so much so that we went 2 nights in a row on our trip! The restaurant is a small family owned shop in a nice street with ice cream stores, cafes, and other restaurants. There's no "official" menu, but some papers on the wall can help you make your food decision. We ordered a charcuterie board for 2 (mind you the boards change by day depending on what ingredients are available so keep that in mind). The board had a variety of breads, spreads, cheeses, and meats. The portion size was more than enough for 2 people. We also ordered a bottle of their house wine which was delicious and cheap (around 10-12 euros). Overall, the place has a great atmosphere, delicious food, and incredible prices! My husband and I agree that this was the best sandwich we have ever had. I will truly be dreaming about this delicious sandwich when I am back in the states and at work. We had just finished a long tour of The Roman Forum and The Colosseum and we're absolutely famished. This restaurant is off a side street and could easily be overlooked so make sure to add this to your itinerary. We both had a veggie sandwich. The bread was soft and airy. We added fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes soaked in olive oil and basil, sautéed onions, artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, arugula and the best part was the zucchini which truly tasted like a pickle. The flavors of the vegetables were so rich that no extra condiments were needed. In the states, you often see people adding Mayo or mustard, but this sandwich has so much flavor that no condiments are needed. The lady who made our sandwich was nice and very hospitable. There are several tables available inside to sit at while you eat. I enjoyed sitting inside and looking around at the old pictures on the walls. I cannot recommend this place enough!! The reason for my 4 star review is simply because we had a charcuterie board and I consider that finger food. It was a great start to our meal that evening and I absolutely loved the cheeses along with the meats that were displayed and put out for our enjoyment. The service was fast and friendly. The seating is limited since they only have a couple of tables and chairs indoors while the others are outside. It's definitely worth a stop in center of Rome while you're sightseeing. Staying in Rome near The Spanish Steps, there weren't that many bars for us to venture to that weren't overpriced and full of cazzata. So, when the wife and I stumbled upon La Prosciutteria Cantina Dei Papi Trevi, we fell in amore. Since they do not have a license to be a full restaurant, you need to order first and pick up your food and drink from the counter. They even have a sign explaining the process, even stating that they aren't lazy. Get a mixed plate board and the workers will pick out an array of meats, cheeses, fruits, spreads, and bread of whatever they feel like. We went two nights and each night it was a different masterpiece. Just trust them because when in Rome... Also, get a full bottle of wine as well since half bottles are for sissies. Turns out that La Prosciutteria is an Italian chain with locations across Italy. There is even another location in the Trastévere part of Rome. For an establishment that claims not to be a restaurant, they sure operate like one... on a very, very, small scale. There are just a couple of seats by the doorway. Once inside, you order from the counter on one side and there are several shelf-like tables where patrons can eat standing. In the very back, there are really only a couple of tables where you can have a sit-down meal. Several signs on the restaurant state that they do not have a restaurant license, so I suppose this is actually a take out venue that happens to have a handful of tables, so you can eat on premise. There are various cured meats hanging from the ceiling, with some attachments that catch the meat drippings. Mr. Joy and I shared a small mixed board, with mushroom spread, cilantro spread, sundried tomatoes, cured meat, and a chilled bottle of prosecco. We stood over one of the shelf-like tables. Good thing there are wine glass holders attached to the walls, because there is no space on the table for drinks. The mushroom spread on crostini was very smooth, with a nutty and buttery flavor. The cilantro spread had a consistency like pesto, but just with a slightly more herbaceous flavor. The prosciutto, salami, and mortadella were very tasty, and combiend make a nice mini sandwich. What stood out most to me was the sundried tomatoes. Such light flavor, sweet and slightly acidic, with a bit of a fibrous texture. Though crowded, this is a nice place to relax and share some small bites and sandwiches over drinks. The small board and prosecco came out to about 15 euros, which is a pretty good value to me! Considering how tight the space is, definitely try to come at off peak times, or just come early. read more

My sister found a list on TripAdvisor about food and shopping. She saw this store came up first so she insisted to go here. We used Google map for direction but our data roaming signal was unstable in-between all the buildings. We went around the fountain three times until we finally found this place. It ended up being in the same building as the leather store my sister really likes. We got there around 8pm and there's already a line waiting for tables. Or should I say bench space? Cause all the people were eating on benches those were just a little higher than the wood stools people say on. We waited for about 30 minutes until over table of people left. Most of the people were drinking beer or wine and chilling so it really extend the wait time. For food, we got salami, prosciutto, panchette and some other meat that I don't know. We also got one type of cheese and three types of bread spread. The whole cutboard looked super nice with the decoration food haha. I am never a salami or prosciutto fan cause it's too salty for me. I ate them but I am still not a fan. However, the panchette was delicious! It's not too salty and the skin was super duper crispy!! It's like one of the Chinese dish roasted pig except we roast the whole pig. We finished everything and yes there were still people waiting for table. We ordered a charcuterie platter for €10 ( you can also get one for €5 or €15) some vino and water. They also have sandwiches, but we went for the charcuterie platter. Everything is delicious but a must try is the Porchetta (pork)! It was so flavorful and juicy; really worth coming back for! Worth the hype. Located right next to Trevi Fountain, this shop is a popular destination. Peek times are dinner time and weekends but considering its proximity to the fountain, it's pretty much always busy. The shop is small, really small. In fact, there isn't much room to turn around. To the left is the counter where all of the different cured meats and cheese are and there are a couple small bar-style tables to the right. There are also a few tables in the back. Everything is pretty much cafeteria style, meaning once your board is prepared, you grab it and take it your table yourself and you have to pretty much watch for people to finish eating so you can pounce on their table. The owners even have a sign posted saying they are not technically a restaurant so you have to get your own food and silverware and clean up after yourself. I got the #15 board, which was a mixture of cured meats and cheeses, along with fruit. The price was about 10 euros. This board was extremely tasty and the presentation was beautiful however I probably should have paid more attention to what I was ordering and gotten a full cheese board since I actually do not like cured meat and ended up only eating a tiny piece of it. The cheese was amazing and the focaccia bread was f'in phenomenal! I could have eaten a whole loaf of that bread and I am not really a bread person; it was soft, warm, and flavorful and it literally just melted in your mouth...perfect accompaniment for the cheese. Lastly, they have a great selection of really great Italian wines for cheap (at least compared to DC prices). The prosecco was cold, crisp, bubbly, and dry (but not too dry). It was so good that I had four glasses of it and the best part is that each glass was only 3.5 euros. If you can plan your trip to Trevi Fountain around coming to La Prosciuterria, I'd definitely recommend it. read more
