Awesome little lunch spot that was too European for me to understand how it works. So for all other dumb Americans like me it goes like this: you walk up to whichever counter has the thing you want (pastries, drinks, sandwiches), you order the thing (I did in Italian but you could also just point), you sit down to the side and eat it (it's really more of a stand and go place than a sit-down place, but there are a handful of cute tables you could choose) and then you go up to the register and tell them what you ordered and ate and pay for it. Now that shit would never fly in NY, and I spent a lot ten minutes trying to both wait in a nonexistent line (just go up there and ask, otherwise you'll get cut) and pay before we touched it (the woman was like, 'no you're good, tell me later'). BUT. This place is adorable, with an old school local vibe. The food was great, the prices real low and the portions were perfect for a light lunch. A really stand out meal considering how quick the whole experience was. Refreshing place in a sea of summer tourism. read more

As there are so many tourist traps in Florence, my girlfriend and I asked our local tour guide for her recommendation for a lunch spot. Cantinetta dei Verrazza is listed as a bakery, but it is connected to a small wine bar/cafe (see my photo). Both the bakery part and the cafe part are narrow and small. We had to wait for about 20 minutes, but it was well worth it. Luckily, we were seated at one of the two tables outside. I don't remember the name of the food that we ordered. We saw this beautiful platter with bread, hams, cheeses, and fruits that the table next to us had ordered. It's not very classy but we asked the waiter for the same platter and, of course, wine. As it turned out, it was two dishes served as one platter. Everything tasted as delicious as they looked! I will definitely come back when I go to Florence. It's not because it's close to the city center and convenient, but because the food is excellent. I highly recommend this place to anyone who's visiting Florence! About the most perfect meal I have had in my life!! And just wonderful warm service too. We went here as its a top pick in the Lonely Planet Italy guide, and while there was an option to takeaway, we lucked out as gave our name to the lovely lady and waited around 15mins for a table. (The location is in a side alley, off a main square and the first time we walked past and had to backtrack). While waiting, I had a front row view of the huge brick oven that was producing heavenly smells and it was torture having to wait while other folks got serves, but gosh, the wait was absolutely worth it when we finally got to our table and got our own sampler focaccia menu. To accompany the variety of focaccia breads which were just super delicious and filled with various hams and cheeses and served perfectly warm from the oven, we also got wine made at the Verrazzano castle which was just perfectly pared with our food. The marble table had a lovely design and the fresh pap are coasters were so lovely, i wished could have taken one as a momento. There was superb friendly English speaking service and while waiting, we also saw a lot of folks paying first at the cash desk and then exchanging the eceipt at the focaccia counter for an instant picnic to take away. We dropped in while we waited for our room to be ready. Jet lagged, half awake and discombobolated, we drifted to a table and began ordering. Bread. Meat. Cheese. Wine. What more could you ask for? I'm sure there was more - but we were so delighted by the perfection of the offerings and the incredible facets of the selected wine, that time escaped us, our jet lag disappeared, we became not just human again but fortified, relaxed, welcomed like we were finally home. We picked up a couple of bottles to take to our room - you never know when you absolutely must have a great bottle - and headed to our place, very content. I can't wait to go back and idle a while in the charming rooms, reading about the estate from which the wine has come. Lovely place run by a caring family. read more

Last July I was wandering one afternoon and happened to look into a doorway and saw the amazing sight of hanging wild boar legs and did a double take. A waiter was closing up but answered my questions about prosciutto. The place was Cantinetta Verrazano, and we have become regulars, visiting almost daily for breakfast or lunch, or picking up bread and pastries to take back to the flat. I have to begin with coffee; the skilled baristas turn out perfect espressos, macchiatos, and lattes. I've even coined a term for the existential sadness that is experienced when one has to return to the US and go to Starbucks: depresso! Try a cornetto or filled croissant, or one of the many delicious pastries behind the sparkling display case. The Cantinetto has a full range of panini, but my wife's favorite lunch is a simple focaccia with pomodoro, and a slice of asparagus pie. Today I had the lunch special; prosciutto with fresh and creamy ricotta, and a pastry tart with the same asparagus and cheese filling. The service is excellent in the European style; efficient, but not hovering. Order wine, because it's great, but also to see the masterful wine service of Salvatore, who makes pouring Pinot Grigio a performance. read more

Great place!!!! Stopped in here to use their wifi and ended up with bakery items plus wine. The staff was so friendly, warm and attentive. Their pastries are AMAZING! Really delicious, homemade authentic Italian pastries. Everything is clearly fresh. Their wine is so reasonably priced and just phenomenal. It's local wines produced by them and they are delicious. If you find yourself in Florence be sure to stop in here. read more

What a find! If you are looking for a great escape after a day of sightseeing and shopping this is it. It is comfortable and cozy. Pastries looked devious but we were there for the wine and aperitifs. We splurged for the Chianti Reserva 2009. Exceptional. read more

We were in Italy for just over two weeks, had lots of outstanding meals, but for me, lunch here was our most memorable. We started our day with intentions to visit the Galileo Science Museum and while heading toward the museum we passed this intriguing bakery. I told the others in our group (five of us) that I wanted to come back here for lunch. After spending a couple of hours in the museum (also fantastic!) we retraced our steps to Cantinetta dei Verrazzano. the city was loaded with tourists and we luckily got the only available table upon arrival in the cozy nook at the rear of the restaurant. Our intentions were to have a light lunch -some focaccia, their specialty- and then move on. Well, we had focaccia (delicious!). I had rustica and my wife, the filled. But our dining experience spilled into a broader experience with wine, beer, antepasto, etc. and ended with dessert. We ended up dining and chatting there for nearly two hours. Everything was extraordinare! The food, the service, the environment. I had a beer, we all had beers. Only one label is available. It was so good that, thinking afterwards, I couldn't have picked a better one. Our waitress chilled to glasses with ice before pouring the beer. How exquisite was that! Our waitress was attentive and helpful with suggestions and a very enjoyable person as well. And the ambiance of the cantinetta was superb. You have to walk past a long row of glass-fronted cases filled with the most extraordinary loaves of bread, buns, pastries to get to a display of focaccia that will soon grace you plate and palate before turning into the cozy nook of a dining room with paneled walls and a vaulted cream ceiling. We ate many memorable meals while in Italy, some in restaurants with Michelin stars, but for a serendipitous delight this took the prize. read more

This is my Italian version of Cheers, Where everybody knows your name......sing along people.... But instead of beer, it's glasses of wine. Down home service where you will hear Italian (Ciao Manuella!) and American (Hi John!) coming from the workers. They basically welcome you with open arms, and sometimes I literally run into them. They have a long counter filled with tarts, and pastries to choose from and a menu consisting of foccacia sandwiches/crostinis and a great way to grab a glass of wine for apperitivo. Three euro. They don't have the usual mountains of food to stuff your stomach until your full kind of "apperitivo" so you don't have to really go to dinner, but remember, quality over quantity. So the glasses of wine poured here are of better quality than the other places. There's this unbelievable pecorino cheese that they drizzle with honey that they serve. It just gave me the chills. In Italy, there is a huge span of time between lunch and dinner... so large you can probably fit 200 hungry Americans in it or at least that's how my stomach felt. It's normal to start eating dinner at 8 pm or 8:30 pm. So what is a person to do during that time? Find a wonderul hidden little wine bar that serves tortes, cookies, crostini, panini, and flat breads topped with freshly charred vegetables or salty proscuitto. There's a choice between standing at the bar or sitting down to rest your feet. This is not a hole in the wall... rather the marble and polished brass gives this an upscale feel. The menu is not in English and a lot of nonnas and Italian men constantly arrive to get their fill before heading back out into the busy streets of Florence. Italian is mostly spoken here and this is a lovely oasis from the touristy crowd. Though the hot chocolate is not as good as Rivoire, it's still quite good. All the great deep dark chocolate flavour and none of the overly sweet sugary notes found in the North American version. Wine flows easily from the super friendly staff and the chocolate pear torte is a perfect hit to fill up your stomache to handle the 8 hour gap of time before dinner. We sat down and did hosted our business meeting at a table for 2 hours and never got harrassed to leave. Gracious service kept the glasses filled and the free wifi helped a lot to connect back to the office. Definitely better than any starbucks off site meeting! read more

I sought out this spot based on a recommendation that this was the best wine bar that my friends tried in Florence. It was about a 5-10 minute wait for a table in the early afternoon. The service was impeccable, and yet I felt ok about being dressed casual. The wine was from their own estate, and it was excellent. I had a salad with chicken, and it was the freshest and best salad I had during my trip in Italy. I skipped the sweets, but the bakery area had an overwhelming variety of treats, like a chocolate tart with poached pears sunk into it. read more

My favourite is now the family's fave... I used to go as a single girl living in Florence... We went twice...this trip...well...we were in Florence only two days! Everything from service to food was exceptional. Hats off to the cameriere who doles out great customer service. Lovely place for breakfast and coffee. Delicious pastries, good coffee, friendly staff and charming setting. There are wooden seats against the wall (with small areas to place your food/drink), and while you don't get to sit as a group, you can sit alongside each each other and take in the scene. Yummy gluten-free lunch! Enjoyed our lunch of cecina (thin chickpea fritters) with prosciutto and vegetables and cheese, fresh salad and delicious wine from the Verrazzano vineyards. The service was attentive and helpful, and as New Yorkers, we enjoyed the connection between this the Cantinetta and their ancestor who discovered the New York harbor (the Verrazzano bridge is named after him). There are only a few tables, so we had to wait a bit, but the restaurant is in a very central and beautiful location on a side street. read more
