Took a bit for food but they were really busy right after a ball game. Food was really good!!

Before I begin, let me say that I live in Chinatown in Las Vegas. I believe I have some of the absolute best in Chinese cuisine available to me 24 hours a day. I am aware I need to adjust expectations, and I am. Cantonese Gourmet East touts itself as a takeout restaurant, but it does have the ability to dine in. There were quite a few people parked in random areas out front, so I chose to park next door at a business that was closed. It was a very short walk to the restaurant. Upon arriving it smelled overwhelming of lemon cleaning product. It was extremely clean in the dining area, so I chose to eat there. The lacquered tables were really cute and depicted different flowers and animals appropriate to the setting. I approached the ordering window. It was a very simple hole in the wall that could slide shut behind plastic. I asked if there was tofu. No tofu, so I ordered the curry shrimp, which came with white rice and I ordered wonton soup. I returned to my padded diner chair. I was not offered a drink and I completely forgot to order one. I saw there was a soda machine in the dining area, but I didn't take advantage of that. I tipped up front when I paid and said I would be eating inside. After about a 10 minute wait, I heard someone yell to me from the window "Come get your order." I was given a paper plate, plastic fork and spoon, 2 napkins, a fortune cookie, a paper bag, a plastic container of shrimp curry wrapped in plastic wrap, a baggie of fried wontons, a plastic container of wonton soup wrapped in plastic wrap, 4 soy sauce packets, and a paper container of white rice. I unwrapped my meal at the table. I don't use soy sauce. It changes the flavor for me. I will use it while I'm cooking beef, but other than that I don't use it. Why is this significant? The food was bland. It was good. It just desperately needed seasoning. I sat and read Yelp reviews while I ate. I read that they don't use MSG in their food. That's super nice for people with allergies. They still needed a little bit of something to bring out the natural flavors. Salt would have worked great. Maybe that's not a thing? It definitely needed something though. I liked the wonton soup better than the curry shrimp. I asked for chopsticks and proceeded to pull all of the green peppers out of my container of curry shrimp. It filled my plate and took my huge curry portion down to something I could easily eat. I could have told them no peppers, but I love the essence they impart. I just don't enjoy eating them directly. I finished my onions and shrimp in a very dark yet mild curry. It was good. I wouldn't order it again. It came out extremely hot and my shrimp continued to cook in the sauce. I saw them get smaller and smaller in real time. The wonton soup was minimal carrots, some pea pods, onion, bok choy, and mostly wontons. I dumped in my baggie of fried wontons. This was good. I feel like it gave the soup more flavor. I normally will drink the broth. It didn't have a lot of flavor, so I just focused on the solid offerings. It was good. Would I get it again? I think so. It just didn't have the vibrant broccoli I'm used to. That's ok. I'm adjusting expectations and I'm clear on the fact that I'm spoiled. I finished and packed everything back into my paper bag. I asked the lady at the window if she wanted me to use the small trash can in the dining area. She told me to give my bag of trash to her. I had a couple bites of rice, but that's not really what I was interested in. She asked me if I wanted to take it home. I passed. Would I come back? Not for dine in. That was not a great experience. Terrible experience. Hot & Sour soup flooded with vinegar. Inedible. Tossed in trash after two spoonfuls. Shrimp with lobster sauce had no taste whatsoever. More like SOS over rice. Big do not recommend!!!! Best part of meal was a can of Pepsi from the machine. read more

I'm sent here on a monthly basis to fetch shrimp egg rolls, shrimp fried rice & almond chicken for my Dad. Cash only. Their portions are huge & the food is pretty good. I don't know that I'd drive all the way over here though if I wasn't being demanded to do so by my needy father. read more

This is the best Chinese takeout around! Great portions (I eat the other half for lunch the next day), consistent quality, fast service and always delicious. I moved into the area in 2018 and order from here twice a month (except during covid shut down) and haven't had a single complaint yet! My family's favorites: Kung Bo Chicken, General's Chicken & that amazing chicken fried rice-almost a meal by itself! I am beyond displeased with my meal. I ordered carry out. My partner's order of sweet and sour chicken was just chicken because they failed to include the sauce. My meal of Szechuan vegetables actually was three quarters onion instead of mixed veggies. I could have skipped the $5 for plain chicken and a diced onion. I still like this place after several years of patronage. This used to be my number one "go to" spot for cheap, but tasty, authentic Chinese takeout awhile back and I still like it. Is it as good as it was back then? I'm not really sure about that. Maybe my taste buds have changed a bit in the intervening years? Perhaps my palate for greasy Chinese food is now more refined? Maybe the quality has taken a bit of a dive? I don't quite know the answer to those questions, but what I do know is this- that I still hold a bit of nostalgia for this place and that the food is still pretty good after all these years. Back in the day, this was the best Chinese takeout place for your money. If you wanted inexpensive, high quality Chinese takeout and big portions to boot, this was the ticket. Well, these days, the portions are still huge, bigger than most competing Chinese takeout joints. Whenever I get takeout from here, I have food leftover for two days- seriously. The portions are super generous and the for the most part, the quality is still pretty great. However, it isn't quite the "five star" quality it used to be. It's still pretty terrific, but once upon a time, I would have rated it the best ever. Well, not anymore, but I'm a still a fan, though. What I'm not a fan of the continued "cash only" business practice here. It was okay years ago, but not now. Come on, it's 2018, it's time to invest in a card reader. I'd eat here more often if they'd simply accept credit cards. It's just not feasible to operate as a "cash only" establishment now, at least in my opinion. I don't run around with cash on hand and I can't think of too many people who do. Now, on with the rest of my review and I'll let my "cash only" rant slide for a moment. The food is still really good, if a bit bland on certain dishes. For me, the Szechuan Vegetarian and Stir Fry Vegetables are excellent. Both have generous portions and the vegetables are fresh, plentiful and delicious. The Vegetable Lo Mein, however, will probably remain my favorite dish. It used to be my "go to" menu item (my friends made fun of me that I always ordered it and nothing else, so I eventually acquiesced and started ordering other options), but I have ventured out into eating other things here as well. The Lo Mein is perfectly seasoned and is amazing. The plain Egg Foo Young, though, is kinda bland and not the best dish. It needs something to kick it up a notch. I won't order that again. The rice is usually good, but they have several varieties of fried rice and they aren't all equal. Their basic white rice is pretty decent and the plain fried rice is not too greasy. Overall, the food is incredibly authentic and made to order. As for the ambiance, well, I'll be frank. It's a proverbial hole in the wall. If you are looking to eat somewhere fancy, this isn't it. You'll be disappointed. It's great as a takeout restaurant. The place is pretty clean, but nothing to look at. It is what it is- a dive, albeit one with great food. Just order your food in advance, pick it up and go. That's what I usually do, anyway. I haven't had to wait too long for my order to be ready when I've ordered onsite, either, which is a good thing when you are starving! read more

I have been eating here since I was a kid, probably 20 years. If you are looking to eat in, this place is definitely a hole in the wall, probably want to get your food to go. You can call ahead and not have to wait. The drive through has always been really slow, but that is probably due to people that order at the window and hold everyone else up. If you're stuck behind one of these people, going inside will get you out of there quicker. Their food has definitely decreased in quality over the years and, in my opinion, they are not as good as Cantonese South. We live 10 minutes from the East location and frequent South because of the quality of food and the fact that East has a cash only policy and won't adopt a credit card system. As far as the food, it is good, but aside from the crab rangoon, is nothing to write home about. The portions are huge though. My husband and i split a combination plate and it is more than enough. The crab Rangoon is life changing though. They are giant triangles of heaven that are filled with chunks of crab and cheese. Cantonese South does not have this and is really the only reason i keep going back to East. Pay the little bit of extra money for sweet and sour sauce, otherwise you will get that generic packaged duck sauce. It seriously would not kill them the change their fried rice back to the old-school recipe with bean sprouts and green onions again. I think South definitely has the superior rice, regardless of the variety. I usually order general chicken or sweet and sour something. Bonus: if you order a sweet and sour meal and the crab Rangoon, you don't need to order extra sweet and sour. read more

Absolute best Chinese (Cantonese) food in Flint! I'm so surprised that China 1 and Empress of China have such good reviews. Those two used to be good, but have gone downhill in the last 10 years. Cantonese Gourmet always has big pieces of white meat chicken in their dishes. No weird coloring. Their portions are huge. The lunch is plenty big enough for a dinner. We usually get their General Tso's chicken and Schezuan chicken and chicken fried rice. My only minor complaint would be that the Tso's doesn't come with broccoli. Spent $35 on 1qt of pepper steak, 1qt of garlic chicken, 1qt of shrimp fried rice, 1qt white rice, 12 fortune cookies, and crab cheese. There wasn't enough meet between the 2 qts to put on 2 plates, and I'm trying to feed a family of 5. Whenever I got chicken or beef from other places it came packed full in the container, with more than enough for my small bodied family. So I went back to the store (after being put on hold when I called) and the young college punk started getting an attitude and tried shutting his little window when I snapped back. Finally his mother came over, yelled at him in her language, and continued to tell me how when I buy beef or chicken like that, that its mainly the vegetables (by vegetables she means onions) I'm paying for..... This is a great restaurant. They have great portion sizes and reasonable prices. Favorite dishes: Sweet and Sour Chicken. Awesome S&S sauce! General Tso's chicken. Can ask for it to be mild. Pork Fried Rice -- has big chinks of tasty pork in it. Vegetable Lo Mein -- great flavor to the noodles. Taste like they were boiled in chicken broth! Won Ton Soup - wow! this is a treat and only $5 for a quart! Lots of veggies, lots of wonton dumplings, and awesome flavor. Make sure to get one of their frequent customer cards!
