This was a lot of fun! We observed approximately 12 whales over a period of about an hour. I really appreciated the experienced and professional staff. The biologist who guided the sightings and contributed a lot of information about whale behavior and habitat was excellent. I've never gone wrong on these whale watches! Just went on another one yesterday, and since it was the end of the season the whales were a little lazier than on other rides - no breaching, BUT they did something they apparently only do 20% of trips out - they rolled on their backs and clapped their flippers. We saw 2 different pods, and 2 calves within these groups. The boat also has a variety of menu items, everything from spiked rum apple cider to egg sandwiches to clam chowdah. The boat is obviously cold around this time, so gloves and hats are def recommended. They also routinely offer Groupons, so make sure to look before booking! read more

It was awesome! We had the morning trip and everyone was able to move around freely during the tour. The vessel was clean. The waves were very choppy at first and I noticed a few passengers got sick but the staff were kind and very helpful. The educators were knowledgeable. We saw a large pod of dolphins (about 12-18) and 5 humpback whales (PB and J, Joy and 2 unidentified ones). It was a great trip. Sorry, no photos to show. I wasn't going to write this review, but, after talking with the manager via telephone, I feel I should let this be known. My daughter and her partner purchased 5 tickets through groupon. When she called to make reservations, the person gave her a hard time saying that if she wanted to use the groupon, she'd have to come early in the morning. My daughter explained that she wouldn't be able to get there that early due to traveling. So, after going back and forth with the booking agent, she finally was able to get a 1:30 reservation. If you're going to honor groupons, don't put restrictions on it unless it is clearly stated in writing. Once there, they sailed for two long hours and finally came across one whale and the Captain, after 5 minutes stated that they were then turning the boat around to sail back. He also stated to the passengers not to worry as his staff would be watching the sea for whales as they sailed back and would inform the passengers of any sightings. During the two hour long sail back, not only did they not see any whales (which, we all know isn't the fault of the company),but the crew had zero to say to the passengers.... Nothing. They had no desire to interact with the passengers, discuss marine life, where they were, nothing. My daughter did note, however, that all the crew including the Captain were all drinking beer and just talking to one another, laughing, having a great time. Meanwhile the rest of the passengers just sailed back, bored. I called the company directly because I felt that the manager should know this. I spoke to a man (wish I got his name) that was put on the phone with me when I asked to speak to a manager, he barely let me get my words out before he raised his voice saying that it was ludicrous that someone would accuse his staff for drinking on duty. I let him rant (I think he may have even puffed up his chest out and pounded on it while he talked) and rave then I politely said that my daughter and her 4 guests wouldn't make that up. He had zero desire to even hear what I had to say, he had his mind made up that my daughter and her guests were liars. Wow. It was surreal to me that someone in business could be this ridiculous and be so closed minded. My daughter thinks she may have pictures to prove to him what she witnessed. The only thing this so called manager had to say, that may, in a small way, be positive? Was that he would give my daughter 2 free tickets. Um, okay, that's just what she wants to do, go back there. Especially with how rude he was to me over the phone letting his testosterone overflow, I think if my daughter accepted the two free tickets, he may instruct the crew to throw her overboard. No thanks. That man needs to take some classes on how to talk with people and not basically call you a liar. He also needs to open his eyes to the possibility that his crew DID in fact DRINK ALCOHOL on that whale watch. But I guess it will be 5 people's word against his obnoxious testosterone gorilla like attitude of disbelief. I would never recommend anyone to take a cruise with this company. read more

Since I have had multiple family members come in and out of Boston over the past month, we have gone on several whale watch trips. I used Groupon/LivingSocial deals for each of these, knocking the prices down to about $26/person. Since I recently went on another whale watch (located on Cape Cod), I have a direct comparison point for Cape Ann Whale Watch. With that in mind, this whale watch is a 3 star trip because it lacked several of the key features of the other excursion. Let me discuss. Pros: + All whale watch trips from Boston, the North Shore, South Shore and Cape Cod end up at the exact same place: Cape Cod Bay. You will likely see boats from other companies in the exact same spot you are traveling to. In fact, during our trip, we saw 2 boats from the New England Aquarium in Boston. Gloucester is located closer to Cape Cod Bay than other North Shore companies, which means the time you spend in the boat just heading out there is less. + Free parking is available by the boat, which is nice since other companies in Gloucester do not offer this and you must pay $5-10 for parking. Cons: - The "educators" on the trip talk like they're college frat boys. Which is not cool if you actually want to learn something. In comparison, the other boat company in Barnstable had staff on board who provided thoughtful observations and a vast amount of knowledge about whales. - Pleading with guests for tips for the boat crew is off putting and not a good look for the company. Announcing to the entire boat that the staff likes gratuities, and then standing at the end of the dock while we exit the boat with your hand out (literally, they held a basket out) put a sour taste in my mouth for the trip. Does Cape Ann Whale Watch not pay you a livable wage? All in all, it was a pleasant experience, but I certainly would not return to Cape Ann Whale Watch if I had the choice. There are other, better, options with more professional staff. Since all boats wind up in the same part of the ocean anyways, there is no real reason to choose Cape Ann. read more

Now, I'll admit, I had my doubts about this place at first. For one, having to wake up at an ungodly hour of the morning to go with my sister to catch the 8:30 boat. I am NOT a morning person. By any stretch of the imagination. Second, them not informing us that we'd need to get in a different line to check in our Groupon (or whatever the technical term for it was). My initial thoughts on this matter? 'Company, I am disappoint.' But soon we got going, and those negative thoughts disappeared. For one, the ride was incredibly smooth (or maybe it was just due to the relatively small waves that day). And the staff were very good about engaging the watchers with information about whales and the area to which we were sailing- even a sample of whale baleen and some whale teeth were passed around! Orcas, no offense, but your teeth look pretty freaking puny compared to a Sperm Whale's. And then the highlight of our trip- THE WHALES. And not just the typical 'there's a whale twenty feet away from us' whales, oh no. There was a lot of fish, and these whales were hungry. There were about forty whales in the area, and my god did we get a good show from them. Every single type of feeding behavior was displayed- tail slapping, bubble-ring blowing, coming up to the surface and trailing along so you could see their baleen- we even had a whale breach right in front of the boat, which was pretty freaking epic. Poor tour guide didn't know where we should start looking- basically said to look anywhere! Of course, I have to show some concern about the toddlers clambering all around. Those railings are put there for a reason, kiddies, and as refreshing as a dip in seawater would be I don't think anybody would look forward to fishing you out of there. But at least the staff managed to keep them relatively occupied, which was nice. The trip back, of course, was relatively uneventful, so I occupied myself with filling out the survey they give you at the end of the tour (shows they care about what people think of it, which was nice to see), and getting a snack from the galley inside, which was apparently very well-stocked. And had enormous freaking pretzels for me to munch on. Heck yeah. The tour guide also said that it had been the best tour they'd had in twenty-some years of the company, so amen to that! Nice work, Cape Ann. Oh, and the gift shop is pretty nice, for any of you who feel like grabbing a congratulatory whale plushie afterwards. Seriously, I will recommend the ever-loving daylights out of this place. Staff are friendly, boat is clean, and you're pretty much guaranteed to see whales...what more could you ask for? read more

I can't...I can't even. Cape Ann Whale Watch was mind blowing. The ONE thing I would suggest to you is that you bring a deck of cards or a game to keep yourself entertained on the 2 hour trip out to see the whales. We didnt, but we weren't bored to tears. Just wish we had brought something. ANYWAY, the highlights!!! (exclamation point!!!): Clean boat with plenty of seating. We sat at a table inside because it was a little chilly, and were very comfortable all during the trip. We even felt comfortable leaving our purses at our seats when it came time to see the whales. The staff came around with little artifacts to keep us entertained, such as a piece of whale baleen. I gave one of the girls a piece of watermelon, and boy, was she grateful! We brought snacks with us, but once we saw the prices at the Galley, we shouldn't have bothered. It was cheaper than going to 7/11! 2.50 for a hot dog? 2.75 for a bud light? Don't mind if I do! After about 2 hours, we saw our first whale. So exciting! Our boat wasn't so crowded that you couldn't get a great view. Plus, the whales were on either side of the boat so you could walk around and see tons of them. The captain did a great job of steering the boat so everyone got a good view. They also went very slow as not to hurt the whales. There were some small leisure boats around, and some kept zooming through which is very dangerous for the whales (it can cut their fins!). The staff on the boat told them to slow down (over the megaphone). We got VERY lucky and got to see 8 humpback whales feeding together! Which NEVER happens because they are solitary animals. We saw: Humpbacks Fin Whales Minke Whales Dolphins At one point, the whales were RIGHT next to the boat. It was INCREDIBLE. We even got sprayed by them a little...whale breath! The crew was delightful, the whales were spectacular, and with my groupon, it was CHEAP! Plenty of free parking, good restaurants for afterwards....there is no reason not to go on the Cape Ann Whale Watch! read more

Trip was gorgeous, don't eat too much before your trip might get sea sick!!! We saw a total of about 6-8 whales Cubs with moms and some males! SO BREATH TAKING!!!! They spotted whales and would quickly drove close to them but kept a safe distance unless whales swam over themselves, which they did! Unless I'm getting paid cash monies, traveling somewhere cool, or there's a smolderingly handsome man at the door, there are very few reasons I'm going to wake up early on a day off. But the obligation to play tour guide for visiting family necessitated me rousing early to get our rag tag party to Gloucester for the Cape Ann Whale Watch. I ended up snagging a Groupon for $25 adult tickets, which was $20 off the normal price. As advised, we got there about 30 minutes early for the 8:30 am departure, parked in their little lot, and made our way on the boat to snag some seats. Soon enough, we were out in open water, going out about 30 miles off the coast. They know exactly where to go, so even though the idea that they guarantee you'll see whales seemed like BS to me, it was pretty dang true. The ride wasn't too choppy, you should be fine unless you're really sensitive to seasickness. Definitely bring sunscreen, a hat, a jacket, and some water. Whales get thirsty. The staff was great through the entire operation, throwing out mad facts and announcing when the beautiful beasts had been spotted out in the open water. Of course when any were spotted the entirety of the boat would run over to that specific spot so sometimes you miss viewing the action, but the boat moves around so much I definitely saw my fill of whales that day. Wow, what an awesome experience. It's coming to the end of whale watching season so I was a little nervous about what to expect but our crew was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what to do and where to go so that we would have great views of these amazing creatures. We learned so much from just listening to the crew talk about mating seasons, feeding patterns and lots of other interesting information. Once we got to our destination, several whales were in very close proximity to our boat and we were able to see specific markings and details of several humpback whales. They recognized nearly each whale that we saw and had names for all of them. Very cute. Props to the captain for expertly maneuvering the boat for better views of the whales. The crew was super helpful and friendly and were more than willing to answer questions while they went through the demos. It does get pretty chilly so I would recommend taking a jacket/windbreaker and don't forget snacks and drinks! No alcoholic beverages allowed, although you can purchase beers from their bar on board. Wish we had remembered to bring snacks and light fare but oh well! Their chicken parm wasn't half bad since it was probably frozen and then microwaved ;P Parking is free and they have generic dramamine (motion sickness pills) available at the check-in kiosk for only a $1. So glad I didn't buy a whole bottle for $7 at Walgreens. Beware because even though they said it was non-drowsy, my husband was knocked out on the ride back to Burlington and then was drowsy the rest of the day even after several hours. We were visiting Boston for a week and about a week prior to the trip I decided to check out the local Groupon listings. Just by pure luck they were running a 1/2 price Groupon for Cape Ann Whale Watch! I was so thrilled and we were very excited to go! The experience was everything we thought it would be. We were worried about seasickness (my brother was sick with the flu during our trip) but the boat is very large and sturdy and he was fine. There are 2 bathrooms on board as well. We were able to alternate between the inside (which has booths like a restaurant and a snack bar) and the outside which has 360 degree benches. BRING A JACKET!!! We were visiting on a gorgeous, sunny 80 degree day but when you get out there it can get really cold! Also, I wish it was more advertised but you are allowed to bring your own food on the boat. We chose to eat beforehand in Gloucester but it might have been nice to bring some food and drinks. The boat takes you right out to the whales and is fast enough and easily maneuvered that when they spot a whale they can get you right over to it quickly. The guides are full of information and it was really educational. I had a great time on the whale watch and I plan to go again next time I am in the Boston area. read more

I've been on TONS of whale watches in my day, but this one was by far the best. It was the first one I had done out of Gloucester. The took us some place other than Stilwagon Bank because they had heard that this was where the whales were hanging out on this particular day. In total, I think we saw 8 humpbacks, 1 minke, and 3 fin whales. Fin whales are incredibly elusive so this was quite a treat. The whales were very active. The staff were knowledgable, patient and very friendly. Our guide was phenominal. She had a pluthera of information for us and even looked up the whales that we saw based on their tail markings. I greatly enjoyed this experience. It was highly worth the drive out of the city to do. We had a groupon for $20 pp, but even at $45 it's a total bargain. The kids on the boat had a blast. It didnt take us long to get to the place where the whales were, which was another added bonus because none of the children got restless or irritable. And that makes amuch more pleasant experience for me. read more

Saw a seal, a few fin whales, and a bunch of humpbacks. One of the humpbacks was laying belly up for a good half hour waving at us and playing in the waves. It was a great trip although it was 5 hours long. Glad I took Dramamine! Overall it was informative and fun!! read more

AMAZING. Seriously. Amazing. I have been on many many whale watches, and my trip this summer with Cape Ann was by far and away the BEST one I have ever been on. I don't know if we got super lucky that morning or what, but we saw literally a dozen whales playing in the water all around us at the same time, and I about 25 individual whales total throughout the trip. I didn't want it to be over...even though it was drizzling the entire time we were outside watching the "show"! My one "problem" so to speak, was that when I called for reservations and mentioned my Groupon, they told me that all their Groupon spots were "sold out". Well, nowhere in the terms of their Groupon did it say that Groupon spots were limited on each ride. So that irritated me, but in the end it worked out because we did the morning watch instead of the afternoon one and saw more whales than I expected. read more

This was my families very first whale watch and we were not disappointed!!! The crew was friendly and courteous before and during the ride out to sea. They had crew members come around with some educational materials and to tell you more about whales to help pass the time. It took us about an hour and a half to reach the destination of where they commonly see the whales feeding, hanging out, etc. We got to see a couple of different types of whales and saw several throughout the cruise. We even got to see some dolphins as well who did some great jumps in the waves next to us. They moved the boat closer to one of the whales so we got a pretty good look at it. After when we headed back to land they brought out some sea toys for the kids to play with to keep them entertained. They also have a dining area and sell some food if you get hungry and forget to pack some snacks. My son likes to ask 100 questions and the crew were very nice and kind enough to answer them for him. The trip took about 4 hours and was well worth the investment of time and money! Overall, we had a fantastic experience and look forward to doing it again some day with this company! read more

By far the best experience of my time in Boston. I researched other whale watching places before my trip and when I saw others saying you should drive further north to Gloucester, that's when I found Cape Anne Whale Watch! What a phenomenal experience! There were whales everywhere! We first saw a fin whale. Followed up with a shark, then a humpback whale and her calf and then Yoo Hoo! Yoo Hoo hasn't been spotted by anyone on the current crew, ever. The last sighting of her was in 2002. What an experience! Peaceful, serene and exciting all at the same time. The commentary is educational and interesting, not blaringly loud, the crew is super helpful, super friendly, and the prices of food and drink on the boat are reasonable (which is darn near impossible to find in Boston). Not only is everyone awesome, but they know their stuff and you can tell that they are passionate about the whales! It's great to be educated at the same time that you are out on the water watching these magnificent creatures. The first time we went, I chose Cape Ann Whale Watch because of their guarantee that if no whales were sighted you can take trips until you did see some. This year, we were amazed at the amount of whales that we saw and the associations between the different whales. I only wish that I lived in the Gloucester area so that I could be more involved in learning about whales! In response to some negative comments about this company, I have a hard time believing that they are true. We have has nothing but positive interactions with all of the staff. They are professional and knowledgeable. I purchased the groupon this year and had no trouble making a reservation for the day and time that would work best for us. We visited from NY on Labor Day weekend. We resided in Boston and road tripped to Gloucester for whale watching. Luckily, I got the tickets on groupon for $29 dollars each. We got to the whale watch early to get a good seat. The parking lot is accessible and close to the dock. There is a really cute gift shop located near the dock which I recommend. Try to go to the gift shop before the trip because after it is packed! There are many tables inside and you are allowed to bring food on board. They do sell different foods and drink on the ship as well. The captain and staff were very informative and came around to greet guests. We were on the 8 am tour and it took about an hour to travel to the whales, but the ride was peaceful in the morning. Whale watching was fun, but I wish our captain moved closer to the whales! He kept leaning towards the left which made everyone on the boat fight for a spot and most of the trip I could not see. The whales popped in and out which was pleasantly surprising, however, I wish we were more close so there was a better chance of seeing them again. There is a survey at the end which allows you to win a free whale watch which is good for residents in the area and kids. read more

My fiance and I purchased groupons for Cape Ann Whale Watch during the end of May. Between our crazy schedules, the first time we would've been able to go was Labor day. We booked for the morning trip. Unfortunately the weather was supposed to be bad, so that trip was cancelled ahead of time. I really appreciated their concern for everyone's safety over wanting to make money off a dangerous trip. That's the first thing that impressed me about Cape Ann Whale Watch. They called me as soon as they realized they were going to cancel, which was the day before, and offered us the afternoon trip since the weather was due to clear. We couldn't make that option, so we booked for yesterday afternoon. The entire staff was welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. They were upfront and honest about what we could expect, as well as in the event no whales were seen, we'd receive vouchers to come back. We didn't need this though! We saw a Minke whale and Harbor Porpoises on our way out. When we reached out destination, we found a single Humpback whale, but he stayed near the surface for over an hour!!! We were so close, I felt like we could reach out and touch him. There was also a Basking Shark that came close. My fiance and I spotted another whale on our trip back. And when we got into Gloucester, we spotted a Harbor Seal and watched him for a little bit before docking. A few people on board got seasick during the trip and the staff made sure they told everyone how to feel a little better if they were experiencing the same thing, as well as made sure that those who were feeling ill got as comfortable as possible. I've always wanted to go on a whale watch. After living in Boston for 3.5 years, I finally got my chance. There was an offer on groupon for $25/ticket and I just couldn't pass that up. Regularly, the prices are $45/ticket. The boat leaves from the Cape Ann harbor in Gloucester. It was very easy to find, and they offer *free parking* in their lot right outside the ticket office. If you have a voucher or need to pick up your ticket, make sure you go to the office first and exchange whatever you have for a laminated ticket. That is what they collect when you board the boat. Get there early! The tour leaves twice a day (8:30 and 1:30) everyday. I arrived just at 8 for the 8:30 sail, and I was one of the last ones to board. There are enough seats for everyone, but you may end up having to sit inside. The crew is very knowledgeable and come around to everyone sharing little pieces of information. It took a while until we actually saw a whale (1.5 hours), but it was totally worth it! We ended up watching a mom and calf playing in the water from only a few feet away. They were spinning around and doing pectoral flaps. One of the first things the crew told us was that this is not SeaWorld, so don't expect any tricks. We had a really awesome time with them. Crew was great - friendly, knowledgeable. They did little demonstrations to help pass the time while we were on our way out. they knew exactly where to look and the captain was awesome about getting the boat to the whales quickly when we spotted them. We saw humpback whales, minky whales, and a really rare and incredible glance at a Finn whale. I highly recommend going with them if you're wanting to do a whale watch. read more

Great experience. The educator girl was very knowledgeable and shared some really cool facts. We saw a good number of whales a couple sharks, and we even got to see a giant turtle. Food on the boat was good and they even have alcohol! great day, would recommend it to anyone in the area! read more
