We hired Cape Fear Flooring on October 29th, to repair a section of our hardwood flooring with water damage and to remove a carpet floor runner on a set of wood stairs and refinish the stairs to match the rest of the homes flooring. Upon hiring I gave a substantial deposit. Ben Smith arrived to our home on November 4th to begin work. He arrived with his unneutered male dog and a drunk employee. Thankfully he had the sense to send the drunk employee home. Ben worked on the very small section of floor from November 4th - November 7th. In this time he had one other employee show up to my home and this employee removed the small section of carpet from my stairs leaving broken nails and staples exposed and sticking up through the wood. Extremely sloppy work. We were even finding staples and nails throughout the living room after they left. We have pets and kids and the stairs were left in a very dangerous state. The stairs were stripped of carpet on November 4th. Ben's helper never returned after removing the carpet from the stairs. Thursday November the 7th Ben installed a couple of pieces of wood into the small section of wood flooring. He told me that the wood needed to acclimate for 5 days and he'd be back then. But what about the stairs? Why couldn't he address the stairs that were left in such a dangerous state while the section of wood floor acclimated. Why completely abandoned the unfinished job you were hired and paid yo do? Maybe because he already had my money. I didn't complain, but instead spent the next 3 days removing the staples and nails from the stairs myself. I was honestly hoping it would speed the project along since it was now clear this was a one man band. After not hearing from Ben since the 7th of November, I finally decided to reach out to him 7 days later on November 13th to see where we were on him coming back out. I told him that I was leaving town on November 17th and would like to have this project completed before then. He said that he couldn't get back to me until Friday the 22nd. I received a call from Ben on Wednesday November 20th saying that he could not get to me on Friday the 22nd as he had planned, it would not be till Monday November 25th. I rearranged my work schedule to accommodate Ben's schedule and despite my dissatisfaction with this entire project from the very beginning, I was kind, polite and understanding. I then received a text message from Ben on Sunday saying that he would not be able to get to my house on Monday. At this point I was starting to get very frustrated. When I told Ben to please be at my home on Monday to complete this project he said he needed me to call him. My husband called Ben and my husband was very patient with him at 1st, as soon as Ben realized that we were unhappy with his work and time management he became combative and hostile. Completely unhinged and out of control. Ben told us that we should find someone else to complete the project. It was so strange, Ben was so nice during our estimate. After the hostile phone conversation we no longer felt safe with him in our home. We immediately hired another company to come out to complete this project and address his mistakes, they will begin this Friday. We messaged him asking him to refund a portion of our very large deposit as no work was completed on the stairs and the flooring still had to be sanded and stained. He has refused us a portion of our deposit and has been sending us aggressive messages that seem to have been sent while he was under the influence. Take my word, stay far away from this unhinged man. I have never met anyone like this, very scary. Recently had carpeting replaced with hardwoods in two guest bedrooms by Cape Fear Flooring. Also had damage in the dining room repaired by weaving in new hardwoods. Further, some worn spots from chair movement were refreshed with buffing and applying a satin coat on most of our existing hardwood floors. Owner Ben Smith is very experienced and very much a perfectionist, and he did a great job of weaving the new hardwoods into existing flooring that has been down for 15 years. We unfortunately had water damage via Florence where rain penetrated under 3 different 12' front door/window combo's. Ben came within 24 hours after we contacted him to quote the job. We were so happy that he was able to start demolition immediately. As it turned out, unfortunately we needed a new subfloor since the old engineered hardwood flooring was glued to the old subfloor, which made the job more challenging. Ben just kept working until it was all removed. He then did a great job installing the new subfloor, it looked almost good enough to be the new final flooring! We called CAPE FEAR FLOORING Ben Smith to get an estimate on installing some unfinished hardwood flooring and have it sanded and finished. We originally had planned to purchase the flooring ourselves and have a professional to install and finish but Ben was able to give us a turn key price materials and labor and cheaper than we had originally planned. We did get another estimate from another flooring contractor and they were pretty close in price. We liked Ben and decided on Cape fear flooring for the project. Cape Fear Flooring sanded and refinished our floors and stairs in our beach house on Topsail Island. The floors were the original prefinished hardwood that had suffered through 20 years of sun and sand. Needless to say, they needed lots of TLC. Ben provided us a very good price for the job and started and completed the job on schedule. We were amazed at how well the floors came out, like new. We were also impressed with Ben's ability to match another area that had been replaced with newer floors so the rooms tied in well. Finally, they ran into issues with the shoe molding and had to replace much of it instead of reuse what was taken up which turned out to be in worse shape than expected. I am so impressed. I purchased a home about a year after Florence destroyed mine. One thing I loved about my old home was the original 1940s hardwood floors. The new house also has the original 1941 floors. It had been some time since the floors had been done and they needed help. Ben brought them back to life. They are gorgeous and he was meticulous. He also had to tear out the existing vinyl in the kitchen and put down new hardwood (as close a match as he could to the other floor). It's gorgeous also and incredibly sturdy. This wasn't an easy job. Dorian came to visit during it. Ben worked as hard as he could, even working Thursday (the day Dorian came) until past time he should have left. I told him to go home and he said not to worry about him. Well, the storm did hold up the job a little, despite everything he did. So Ben decided he would put 2 more coats on the floor because he felt bad about the delay (at no extra charge and despite my telling him there wasn't anything he could have done). I can't get over it. The other thing is that I learned a lot. He really explained everything and made suggestions. Sometimes those weren't what I thought I wanted (about stains, color). It turned out he was absolutely right, so I'm so glad I did. Fabulous job. Wow. And, I just got back from the house. Ben had said he would also install shoe (or toe?) molding that had come loose or simply wasn't there. He was doing it! Again, no charge. Seven months later and $11,000 poorer only about 70% of the original floor had been removed, no new material on site, which I had paid for and Ben simply opted out saying he was overwhelmed with problems and couldn't complete the job. A litany of excuses, unfulfilled promises and no meaningful effort effort put forth sums up my experience with Mr. Smith. I was promised a refund and so far have not seen one dime. We checked with other flooring contractors in the Wilmington area and no one had anything good to say about him. He completed the work quickly, and also worked with our construction schedule to refinish the adjoining two rooms.
