We had a wonderful day trip here yesterday. I had read the reviews that it was "an easy walk" and "75% Boardwalk". Yes, it was easy, but not 75%boardwalk, and definitely NOT stroller friendly. It took a lot of team work to get to the end. And on the way back, my husband carries the stroller and I carried our son. I didn't see any reviews about strollers so we tried, should have brought the carrier. Whoops! However, the views were totally worth it. It was absolutely stunning at the end!! -------700th REVIEW------- MUST GO-TO! I definitely would like to say that this was one of the highlights of our Spring Break trip because it's just gorgeous here. Cape Flattery is the northwesternmost point in the contiguous USA and it's an accomplishment coming here. Although the drive was kind of stuff because there was so much turns in the road, it was well worth it. The scenery here is just beautiful and if you're lucky, you might catch a whale! We saw an eagle when we were hiking around. What's really cool too is that a Makah Indian artist creates walking sticks and puts it up next to the map in the beginning of the trail, free to use but if you keep it, just donate $5! read more

I hate the term 'breath taking', but it seems that no other term will really do. This place is amazing! To get to the cape you'll start by (duh) following the road signs. You'll end up at a dead end parking area where it's expected that you will pay $5 or something. We had no cash and so just took the unethical low road. Not that I didn't feel bad, mind you, because this is on an Indian Reservation and haven't they been stolen from enough? Anyway, the parking area contains one overflowing garbage can and two toilets. It stinks to high heaven and you're better off finding a tree to pee behind on your walk to the cape. Trust me. These were the most disgusting "bathrooms" I've ever seen or smelled. The walk to the cape seems long only because 75% off it is done on wooden walkways through the woods. They're narrow and can be slippery--careful! At the end you'll be rewarded with one of the best views of all time. And you'll be able to boast to all you meet that you have been to the northwesternmost contiguous point of the United States. read more

Cape Flattery is absolutely gorgeous! I walked the Cape Flattery trail when I was 6 months pregnant. The uneven pathways were fine. I didn't have any problems! It was slow going because there were so many things to take pictures of. My husband sketched as he walked the trail. We had a wonderful time. Tip: Wear layers! Sure, it's cold and damp. A sweater and a long sleeve shirt seem like a great idea. "I'll freeze my tuckus off! There is no way I'll wear a short sleeved shirt!", you think to yourself. Walking the trail creates heat and makes some folks (like me) wish they had worn a t-shirt under that sweater! read more

If you are on the West side of the Olympic Peninsula, Cape Flattery is definitely a place that you must make time to see. It is the most northwestern point in the lower United States. It is about 6 miles from Neah Bay, 18 miles from Clallam Bay, 16 miles from Sekiu, 42 miles from Forks and about 2 hours west of Port Angeles. The trail has been enhanced and maintained which now consists of both a well groomed trail and some parts that are a cedar boardwalk. There are 4 separate viewing areas while winding yourself down the trail which can be reached via a 20 to 30 minute walk (3/4 of a mile hike). In the last viewing area you will see Tatoosh Island where the lighthouse is located and the public is not allowed to visit. There is no admission cost to hike the trail, but you do need to purchase a Recreation Permit upon entering the reservation. These can be purchased at the Makah Marina, Washburn's General Store, Makah Tribal Center, Makah Museum, Neah Bay Charter & Tackle, Makah Fuel Co. and the Makah Smoke shop. They Cost $10 per car and are valid for the calendar year in which they are purchased. read more

The trail itself is short and fairly easy for people in good health...lots of board walks and some steps here and there, taking you about a quarter mile or so down a winding path through amazing trees to the lookout points over the cape, and out toward Tatoosh Island and beyond. After 40 years of looking at this little spot on the map, what a thrill it was to see the tip of the mainland! Beautiful cedar trees and mossy, ferny green paths meandering amongst several wondrous viewpoints, all the way down the stone and plank stairs to the observation deck. A friendly park guide was there with a telescope, binoculars, guidebooks, and lots of stories to share. We saw two juvenile bald eagles squabbling on top of a giant rock, puffins and oyster catchers, a kayaker exploring the sandstone caves, and had just missed the whale others saw minutes before our arrival. A magical, beautiful place. read more

Welcome to the Most Northwestern Point in the lower 48 states! The walk to Cape Flattery is pretty easy-going. Almost the whole hike can be done on wooden boardwalks which we were thankful for since we had our two mutts with us. (Two muddy dogs and a motel room do not go together.) I used to hike a lot before I tore my tendon. After almost a year of physical therapy and barely being able to walk a mile, my friend found the perfect hike to get me going again. It is a 4 1/2 hour drive from Seattle but well worth it. I still walk with a wrap on my foot and the hike itself was easy enough. I went at a steady pace, and the wooden planks helped a lot. I love how green the hike is and we went on a perfect day because we we arrived at the viewpoint, it was breathtaking. read more

Cape Flattery is the northwestern most point in the continental US, and you would expect it to offer great views. It does not disappoint in this respect. You have to drive a bit to get there, pay a fee to the Makah nation, and then hike 3/4 mile down a trail that is quite steep in parts. I would not call it an easy hike. At the end of the trail you have several observation decks but you cannot get down to shore level. read more

One of the most beautiful spots in Washington state and so little effort to get there! This is a short and easy hike. Most of it is wooden boardwalk. The boardwalk itself is cool and interesting and there are various built viewpoints that are great. But the big payoff comes at the end. . Magical and breathtaking. If you're lucky you can see sea lions and sea otters in the waters and on the rocks. This was an easy enough walk/hike for young children. read more

The hike itself isn't bad, but definitely further than I thought based on websites, reviews, etc. Be prepared for it to be muddy. And, of course, it will likely be windy and rainy. This was worth the time and effort to see. We are seniors and mobility wise had a ver difficult time on this hike to the viewpoints. It states it was half a mile but felt like 10! First part was pretty easy then we got to the stairs, rooted stairs, muddy pathways and plank walkways. All I could think of on the way down was "I pity the rescue workers that will have to carry me back up if I fall and break a leg! Lol!" But like I say at the beginning, it was worth it! spectacular scenery and I can say I was at the most Northwest corner of the continental US. I am glad it was a nice sunny day as I can imagine how slick and treacherous it would have been if it were raining. read more

We made the trek out to Cape Flattery for the first time yesterday. Its been a rainy summer, so of course we didnt expect anything different there. The trail starts off with you going a bit downhill (remember, you do hafta walk back up it) with lots of tree roots and such with regular trail ground. Once the boardwalk starts, its a nicer walk. Lots of pretty view points. Lots of older people trying to make the trail and were having a lot of trouble. My hubby and myself did okay, but were definitely tired after climbing back up to the trailhead. read more

It was nice to be at the north western-most point of the U.S. The place was absolutely beautiful and probably the most beautiful sight of the ocean that I've ever seen. What made it even nicer was that you had to walk through this beautiful, magical forest to get there. This is the unusual aspect of the ocean is having an ocean right next to it. So different from California and any other beach or oceans that I've been too. It was a shame that you couldn't venture to the bottom. I don't believe it was possible. It was on an Indian reservation that made it interesting and I stop by their nice Indian museum. The route to and from there is a long and winding road but well worth it. read more

Outstanding! About a 5 mile drive from Neah Bay along a well paved and maintained road. Ample paved, nice parking for 20-30 cars and 3 or 4 RVs. Easy walk along a mostly boardwalked trail with some muddy spots and slippery roots. Definitely not for the those uncomfortable walking on uneven surfaces. Kids over 3 no problem. Stray off the boardwalk along already worn paths and you'll see even more spectacular views. Go on a nice day if possible to appreciate all that Cape Flattery has to offer. Worth the long drive from Seattle and plan on spending at least two hours walking the trails. read more

The most beautiful place I've seen in Washington state. It's like stepping back into another time period. The best part is getting off of the trail and taking a few smaller ones through the forest, so you can get out onto the cliffs, sit down, and just enjoy the magnificent view. The hike is short (about half a mile), and a mild slope down to the cliffs, and then back up again. We arrived after the rains had just past and the skies were very clear, so steam was rising up off the trail with sun gleaming though the trees. The views are fabulous and very breathtaking. They have historical information markers along the trail as well as at the final platform. We also got a glimpse of some sea lions near the Tatoosh island, so bring your binoculars to view the wildlife at sea and on the rocks below the cliffs. read more

This was quite a bit out of the way but it was really nice. Parking was difficult so go earlier in the day. If you have balance issues definitely use one of the walking sticks available. Lots of tree roots and uneven board sidewalks. The climb back up is fairly strenuous. The views at the end are amazing and there was a guide answering questions. Don't forget to stop in Neah Bay for $10 parking pass. We got ours at the grocery store. read more

There are those things you have on your bucket list or maybe things do may never do again in your lifetime (but glad you did)... whatever it is, Cape Flattery was one for the books for us! Upon recommendation from a friend, we read up on Cape Flattery while on a trip to Port Angeles. We took that 2 hour drive to CF and prepared ourselves for a short 45 minute hike to the farthest most northwest point of the continental US. The hike was not bad at all and they provide walking sticks at the entrance (donate $5 if you take one home with you). There are 3 view decks - the first stop is a breathtaking view of the cove with rock formations and the coastline. The second is the best one... the carverns where you can see and hear the waves crashing onto the rocks and caves. Wow. The third is the "farthest point" or the edge. Photo op indeed! Beautiful hike... amazing views... unforgettable experience. read more

Absolutely beautiful! Do not miss making a stop here while driving through the US-101 loop en route to Port Angeles, or the beautiful beaches in the Forks area. Whichever direction you're headed in, totally worth the stop! Easy hike, beautiful forest, and spectacular views, even all along the drive through the towns of Sekiu and Neah Bay. Make sure to purchase your Makah Reservation Recreation pass (good for the current calendar year) at Washburn's General Store in Neah Bay! You will not regret it! read more

We saw this place on Nat Geo Channel. We had to go see it for ourselves. The hike was easy down and back. 1.5 Miles approx. it was easy going down a little more of a challenge coming back up. It was worth it. the board walks and observatory decks are in great condition. it's a long drive from North Bend WA so we stayed at the Red Lion. I gave them 2 stars LOL. Woohoo! The bf had been telling me about this spot from the moment I met him. He kept showing me stunning photos of the area and said he would take me one day. The opportunity came up on the 4th of July. We planned on doing a trip to Seattle and Vancouver by car and ferry. We explored the Olympic Peninsula and ended up at Cape Flattery in the late afternoon. Even though it was already 6pm, it was totally bright outside as there's daylight until 10pm in the summer. The path down only took about 10-15 minutes. There are several lovely spots along the way where you can stop to take in the magnificent views. The way up was a little bit more strenuous since it was uphill but the lush forestation made it feel very tropical and comfortable. Going to the Most NW Point in the Continental US should definitely be one of those bucket list-type things to do. read more

The trail to the most NW corner of the continental United States was a bit tricky I think....alot of uneven ground and embedded parts of tree trunks so make sure you don't trip over. The day we went it was sunny out but it was damp on the trail, I believe because it is so enveloped by all the trees and ferns on this trail, which is such a beautiful site! There were signs on some trees that there was a cougar sighting the weekend of July 4th...eeek! Good thing we did not see one! So yea, I think the hike to Cape Flattery was somewhat hard, but then again my friend and I are so not hikers! LOL! Plus there were alot of older folks, I'd say 65 and up doing the trail! Good for them! But regardless if you think the trail is hard or not, you MUST do it, there are a few stops or look out points before you get to the end that are so breath-taking! When you get to the end you have to climb up a ladder that has about 3 or 4 steps....The steps are spaced pretty wide apart and the ladder goes straight up. For me with zero upper body strength...it was difficult...how sad. (hubby refers to me as "Mr. Burns" Homer Simpson's weak-butt boss! LOL!) But right after I climbed the ladder and barely could pull myself up onto the deck (a lady who had to be about 75 came after me and pulled herself up I was impressed! or shocked due to the realization of my lack of muscles! LOL!) the view is majestic, breath-taking, stunning, awesome.....just a wonder world. My friend and I sat there for about 20 minutes taking in the beauty....... PS.....please, please go to the bathroom BEFORE you get here, the only ones available are the ones in the parking lot, a small square building with 2 steel brown doors...one for men, one for women and sad to say they are ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!! When we got there I had to pee sooooooooooooooo bad and I am TOTALLY A BATHROOM SNOB but had no other choice....a girl in the parking lot warned me how gross they are inside and no toilet paper in the women's, I had to get some from the men's. I was terrified to open the men's door and with good reason, when I did I basically ran away screaming, absolutely gross! We had some Starbuck's napkins in the car and it was either brave it up and go in the women's or pee in the woods, which I did not feel right about in such a beautiful place....so I entered the most horrific and terrifying bathroom I've ever experienced. Believe me I WOULD have rather peed outside and under any other circumstances would have!! I am saddened to think such a beautiful place has some horrific bathrooms...sad no one cleans them....going to gag now ...having flashbacks...ughhh... read more

Getting yourself to the northwestern most point of the contiguous US is pretty freaking awesome. While you probably have to drive for a while, the hike is short and pretty easy. It's simply gorgeous here, you feel like you're at the edge of the world! I was really, really excited to be here, and woke up at 5:30AM. I tried to go back to sleep, but I just couldn't, so by 6AM I told the fiance I was going to Cape Flattery with or without him. He opted to get up and get dressed, but I'm sure he wanted to strangle me at that moment. The best part of being there then was that there were no people and the waters were so quiet we could enjoy the seals hanging out right beneath us without interruption. This place is so majestic and amazing, I'm so grateful to have seen it. read more

This is the best hike I have been on in a long time. It is not too hard and the scenery was breathtaking! Bring your good camera as the walk in the woods and the views at the end overlooking the Pacific Ocean are so nice!! Parking was good, but the pit toilets were the pits. Hold your breath! read more

If you're ever in the area, and very likely on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and have even the bare minimum amount of "sightseer" in you, then you make going to Cape Flattery your number one priority. The road might be rough. Or narrow. Or rainy. The trail at the end of the road may look intimidating. Pay no attention (unless of course the trip is physically impossible), because the end of road (er...trail-please don't stop at just the end of the road, because that's just where it starts to get good) makes it all worthwhile. If you don't believe me, google "cape flattery washington pictures" and look at the beauty that unfolds, and then remember that photographs just don't do the real thing justice. The pictures will probably blow you away. The real sights will do way more! Trust me. Take the trail all the way to the end and drink in the wonders of the beginning of the lower 48. Extend your arms out over the end rail to ensure that you have gone as far as you can possibly go (but be careful so that you don't fall over what must be a 1000 foot cliff). Close your eyes and concentrate and see if you can feel the pounding of the waves into the sea caves far below. Imagine yourself in a scene from Lord of the Rings, then open your eyes and see how just how close to that you really are. What a magic place. If you have a once in a lifetime chance to see it I implore you. Don't blow it. Go for it! God Bless the Makah's for making such a wonderful place available! read more
