However, it's difficult to go with a company or trust them with your taxes when they can't even respond to you in a timely manner or at all. Let me detail my experience below: December 16, 2019: Send an inquiry through their website asking about availability for new clients. Receive a response from Steven that they're currently evaluating their capacity and will get back to me in a week. I respond immediately asking if I should follow up in a week or if they'll let me know? *CRICKETS* December 26, 2019: Ask for an update. Hear nothing, follow up with an inquiry through their website December 31, 2019: Receive a response from Steven apologizing for letting this slip through the cracks. They have room for new clients and ask for information. I respond an hour later with the information. *CRICKETS* January 19, 2019: Another follow up. Ask for an update. *CRICKETS* January 31, 2019: I give up. I reached out to three other companies and they immediately responded, asked for my tax information which I provided, and... immediately responded. I used them for years and always received timely responses during tax time with friendly and professional guidance. However, over the past month I have been met with absolute silence since I sent a email with a specific tax question per my investment advisor. I have called and left voicemails and sent follow up emails to Mustafa and Steven and again with absolute crickets. It's extremely puzzling to the point I am wondering if they have closed for business or on sabbatical. If not it's unacceptable and disappointing. Please do not reach out to or count on this firm. We worked with Steven for two years without incident - I wouldn't say he did a great job or was particularly communicative but our taxes always got filed and we aren't aware of errors. However this past year he dodged my emails/phone calls, my husband's emails/phone calls, and my elderly mother's emails/phone calls (we all file separately). He once picked up the phone and then pretended to be someone else when he realized I was calling for an update on my taxes. He lied to us about filing for an extension and took forms from my mother that he never returned. Ultimately he stopped replying entirely and we had to look for a new accountant, several months after the filing deadline. I just got a notice that I owe several thousand dollars in late filing fees because it turns out he also lied about getting an extension. I don't know what is going on and while I wish Steven no ill will, please do not work with this firm or him. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. read more

10 stars!! Is it possible to look forward to getting your taxes done? Mustafa and I met last year for the first time and I was so happy to have found him. Our taxes are pretty straightforward, but I do need some handholding and explanations. He went through everything line item by line item and answered all my questions. He never rushed me and I'm sure I took up too much of his time. He gave me a great tip on how to save some money and make some at the same time. I left the offices (a beautiful new location) feeling great and relieved. They also have offices in VA, Tysons area I believe. Don't hesitate to look anywhere else. This marks the second tax season we have used Raafat at Capitol CPA and honestly, my husband and I could not be happier with the ease, professionalism, and and knowledge of this company. We've bounced around with tax providers for the past 8+ years of marriage and filing jointly, feeling in the past as though our taxes were done "good enough" but never having an A+ experience. Actually, I don't think we knew that an A+ tax preparation experience was possible until we started with Capitol CPA! The company meets inside the immaculate WeWork space at Manhattan Laundry. We have always brought our 2 children along for these meetings (because DC childcare = $$$), and my kids actually look forward to them. Big points to the crew for always treating our kids with the utmost respect and grace, like little clients themselves! As DC homeowners with a rental property, we have a less than straightforward tax filing process. Due to the more complicated nature of our taxes, we take our tax filing really seriously and need someone who is completely attentive to the smallest of details. Raafat walked us through many of the finer points of DC and federal tax laws regarding our rental property that no previous accountant had ever mentioned to us before. It's no secret that US tax laws are fraught with complexities (and constantly changing), and it takes real experts to be able to navigate those very well. The team at Capitol CPA, and Raafat in particular, do an outstanding job. We go through every single line item in our taxes and are given the opportunity to really learn the ins-and-outs of the process. Beyond tax season, we've also consulted Capitol CPA with additional tax and investment related questions, and the team is quick and eager to jump in and help. I originally used this company because of their good reviews, and they did a great job with my taxes last year. This year, they filed an extension for me without notifying me (still no idea what exactly they filed), and after sending all my information and documents for this year's taxes, have completely ghosted me. Its been 3 months since I sent my documents or heard from them, and I have called and emailed numerous times. We met and discussed my tax situation (complex this year due to side gigs and small business, in addition to moving state lines). I recently moved to DC and needed the expertise of a tax accountant with figuring out DC tax preparation. My taxes are not complicated; yet, working most of the year in one state and moving to DC, I knew Turbo Tax was not the way to go this year. I used Yelp to review potential companies to work with. I looked for efficiency and professionalism since I had an awesome tax accountant for 20 years. I emailed these companies requesting price quotes. After some initial communication with other companies, I was happy to hear from Capitol. Their prices seemed appropriate for my needs. The other companies were a bit overpriced for their base prices IMO. I worked with Omar. He was extremely easygoing and willing to explain or provide answers to any tax-related questions I had. It was probably one of the most relaxed tax experiences I've had. All in all, a good experience. I highly recommend them. These guys are great. They were able to fix my old returns and get my 2015 return done with no problem. They are right at 14th and U. Here's the process: 1. Call them to set up an appt. 2. Show up with all your paperwork for a 30-45 minute meeting about what you need done. 3. Stay in touch over email and respond to any additional questions they have. 4. Go back to sign the docs and send in the paper work. They really made it really easy and painless. Faraz was very responsive and very thorough in everything he did. It was nice to sit down with someone and have them walk us through all the ins and outs of our taxes - that was something I had never had done before, I appreciated learning about the forms and it helped demystify things for me. I made an appointment here based on positive yelp reviews. I've been with my previous tax preparer for years from when I used to live in VA but wanted a local CPA in DC near my home who's knowledgeable about DC tax laws. My experience here was excellent. They have great communication by phone and email before and in follow up to our meeting. They were timely for my appointment and if you come prepared, they're very efficient with filing. I was done in about an hour and had several forms to file. Importantly, he was extremely thorough and sharp, he quickly identified an error from last years filing. The error works in my favor because I get my records straight plus...I'm getting money back from the correction! So, I'm glad he quickly identified the oversight and working on getting it resolved for me. Fees are appropriate and fair and service is professional. These guys get 5 stars from me for many reasons. They spent almost 4 hours with me sifting through details of 3 years worth of taxes with as much detail as possible. As much as this first visit seemed difficult, the outcome was outstanding. I've tried previously other CPAs who did not provide the same type of care and professionalism as Capitol CPA. They weren't a data entry shop for you to submit your taxes. They worked hard to pull get me everything that is possible back to me. I don't have complicated taxes and tried Turbo Tax. I wasn't happy with it and worried about incorrect entries. I also tried H&R block. My experience with them was terrible. It was 20mins of data entry using my W2s and $450 later, I felt I didn't get my money's worth. To add on that, Capitol CPA uncovered mistakes the H&R block had made in my previous return, corrected them, and made sure to minimize any monetary damage to me, thankfully. I highly recommend these folks. After this year, I can comfortably say that I've found my accountants and will continue to be a client because of the amount of care, experience, and professionalism they have shown me. read more

They knew what they were doing and genuinely cared about helping me sort through all my issues (back taxes, notices, penalties, the whole gamut - what a nightmare!). They took the time to sit down with me and my stack of papers and helped me figure out what I needed to do next and what they would do to help. The notices were such a heavy weight on my mind and my finances but I left our first meeting feeling so much more relieved than when I walked in because they knew what they were doing. After that, they prepared my back returns, wrote responses to the notices on my behalf, called the states to ask for an abatement of my penalties, and who knows what else!
