I can't vouch for him for doing "vanilla" tax returns since he has never prepared one for me. This practice may be an excellent resource for that type of consulting. But I can tell you about how he prepared an IRS Form 706. A totally mistake riddled IRS Form 706. If you are not familiar with the Form 706 it is one that you may have to fill out after a spouse passes away. Be very careful with this CPA practice when its comes to this part of the IRS Code. It can be costly to you. He did an IRS Form 706 for me and the first cut of it was done improperly, I thought. I was concerned after reviewing his first cut. I had another CPA review his work and that CPA said my concerns were valid and I brought them to this CPA's attention. He corrected the mistakes. Eighteen months after I submitted this CPA's 706 to the IRS I began preparing a new Revocable Trust because I was living in another state and it was prudent to have one done in this new state. The Attorney I was working with reviewed all past documents (Trusts, Wills, Supporting documentation, IRS 706, etc.). The attorney has a Masters Degree in Tax. He told me that my previously prepared Form 706 was not done properly. I could, in fact, legally "harvest" the entire amount of what the IRS rules described at the time of my spouses death. This CPA calculated only 58% of what could be harvested! The attorney asked if the CPA reviewed my spouses Revocable Trust document. I told him that this practice did not. I told my new attorney I offered to provided it to him but he declined. This CPA asked for ONLY the Will. At the time, I thought that was odd. My spouses Revocable Trust was actually written in such a way that I could harvest the entire legal amount allowed by the IRS in the year of the spouses passing. The attorney was not surprised since he sees this type of situation occasionally. He said the key details for harvesting are found in the Revocable Trust for the 706 preparer - and should be included in the preparation research by the preparer. The attorney said, when a Revocable Trust is in the documentation mix - it should always be reviewed by the 706 preparers. What the attorney prepared was much more extensive with much more supporting documentation (bank and investment statements, supporting real estate valuations, etc.). All of that was submitted as a package to the IRS along with the Form 706. None of that was included with the first Form 706 submission by this CPA. Also, a copy of the Revocable Trust and the Last Will and Testament so that when the time came, my heirs would not have to argue with the IRS Sadly, I had to have the Attorney prepare an amendment to the original 706. It was an extensive package with another Form 706 prepared correctly. And I had to pay for a second IRS Form 706 prep. I paid thousands of dollars to this CPA practice and now I was faced with paying more to have it done properly. Bottom line. Be careful with this CPA practice when there may be extenuating legal considerations in tax preparation. I would not recommend him as an IRS Form 706 preparation resource. read more

I scheduled a free consultation because I needed a new accountant for my very small business and was seeking some strategic advice as well. The process was smooth and the consultation lasted over an hour, so I was hopeful that Mike Davidoff would be the right accountant for my needs. In the meeting, he quoted a fee of $500 for preparation of my federal and state yearly tax returns (joint with my husband) including coupons for estimated tax payments during the year. He said he would look into the other services I need and provide a quote via email. After 72 business hours, I had not heard from him and wrote to ask about a proposal. He responded quickly, but with a fee of $1,145 for the same services that were to be included in the $500 initial quote. Fees for other services would be $2400 per year and include work that duplicates the duties of my bookkeeper. Mr. Davidoff insisted that he and his CPAs perform these services or forfeit their responsibilities for my tax return. I am more than happy to pay a premium for work that is honest and valuable to me, but the work as outlined and quoted by Davidoff and Associates does not fall into this category. "Bait and switch" salesmanship is neither appreciated nor acceptable. read more

Tax season is by far the most treacherous period for any single female who didn't rock the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) house and is forced to hand over the estimated cash value of one's first born by each and every April 15th. To counter the aforementioned rationale, there are the brave men [and women] who toss back cans of Red Bull and Monster until 2 AM in the business school library to provide our financial and taxation-based interests with the TLC we truly deserve. As of January 24, 2014, Mike Davidov was that man. I threw myself across his way via the 21st century phenomenon, Groupon. The offer cost $49 and included "a complete basic Federal and State tax return for a single individual," valued at $180. Mr. Davidov provided insight even prior to the purchase of my Groupon and repeatedly acknowledged that the only additional fee I would run into, would be for him to file my Self Employment (SE) tax which would be roughly equivalent to $30. 'Twas an unbeatable offer, indeed. I had my forms ready to go and submitted all essential documents to Mr. Davidov via e-mail, it was the simplest tax process I've undergone as tax prep typically holds joy similar to Chinese water drip torture. Like the mysterious nature of Great Gatsby, I'd never held a conversation with Mr. Davidov, yet the entire process was full of glitter, butterflies and chocolate croissants. That was until the invoice arrived. The invoice was higher than expected and I was initially charged for estimated tax vouchers since I send estimated quarterly payments. I brought this charge to the attention of Mr. Davidov and he ever so kindly waived the charge so that my final bill fell precisely within the quote initially provided. Let's be honest no one likes taxes. I hate paying them and I hate doing them. Even with an accountant they are ton of work. Being an attorney and having prepared my own taxes many times, I was not looking forward to filing taxes on LLC, partnership, and personal return. So I sought an accountant, and met Mike through BNI. I created a tax file with all the information (accounts, receipts, etc.) and shared it with Mike. Mike was able to read through all the materials I sent him, and only needed minor assistance in interpreting my mess of files. When I wanted to meet with him in person he was always available. To me the tax return was pretty complicated, but he got it done without much need for help from me. He took care of the filings as well (e-filing them into the IRS and VA). I plan to have Davidoff CPA help with tax planning as well more regular accounting services, since he did such a good job on the tax returns. Pricing-wise, I found Davidoff's pricing very competitive vs. other CPA firms, and the level of is service excellent. I've had other accountants in the past, and paid more money and barely had my calls returned. Mike always took my call, and he responded to every single email, etc. When you're stressed like I was about taxes, level of service is very important, and that's where Mike really shines. Plus he always knew the answer to every tax question I posed, and he demonstrated a very thorough understanding of tax law. We were very satisfied with the service provided. We were given detailed directions on the documents that were needed. We met for an in-office interview once. All other correspondences were made over e-mail, which was responded to promptly. We've always dreaded filing taxes because my husband was self-employed through a company based in a different state and I was on a scholarship grant that left all taxes to be handled by the recipient. It was a refreshing change to be able to talk to a real person who consistently handles our taxes. I also appreciate the fact that he is available all year.
