Brown short hair, clean shaven, kind of slim, maybe 5'10", in his 20s or 30s. Both times he said, with a totally straight face: $20 for the lotto (which was actually $1 if you recall), and then whatever the price of the drink was. And quickly doing the math in his head, he verbally added $19 dollars to the grand total without missing a beat. When I looked at the register seeing the real total (which of course was $19 less than what he said), he deadpanned "just kidding". He did this exact same thing to me two different times in the span of a couple weeks. Seems very sketchy. Benefit of the doubt: I suppose he really could've been "just kidding", but if so, not funny at all and pretty poor taste to be trying that joke on paying customers that you don't know. Especially if you have no comedic demeanor or delivery with it. Keep an eye on this guy.

In fact, my 240k-mile Subaru has been run almost exclusively on Costco gas thanks to the proximity of my work to a Costco Gas Station. Their gas is rated Top Tier™, and that isn't a meaningless proclamation, as TT means a higher quality of gas. They intentionally run it at 20-30¢/gal cheaper than the market average because they use it as a loss leader. * One of the few Costco gas locations that carries diesel. * 5% cash back on the Costco Citi card is kind of hot, especially considering our gas prices as of late. The Meh: * No amenities here like paper towels and window washing equipment. Hell, you're lucky they even have garbage cans! * Members Only. But I mean honestly, does anyone in The Bay *not* have a Costco membership??? The Ugly: * The Santa Cruz station is priced 50¢/gal higher than San José gas stations. I guess that's the schlepping the petrol down the hill tax. Conclusion: Inexpensive, high-quality gas. Not much more one can ask for.

Price - Reasonable, inexpensive. But I always end up buying stuff I do NOT need..... So for me it was a little wasteful. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success at this location since 1994. When I am traveling, my preference is always to stop at a gas station that offers something more than pumping and go. I prefer having a convenience store attached to the gas station in case I'm looking for something to drink, some gum or perhaps even a quick snack. Cleanliness is always a huge plus. This particular Valero's has a convenience store, and unhappy people that work there. We stopped to get gas, and walked inside to pay and grab a quick drink. The cashier was extremely unpleasant, and it was very clear not only was unhappy to be there, but he was clearly inconvenienced by us making a purchase. After we paid, we went out to pump the gas and the pump was not even ready for us to use. We had to walk back inside, and ask for him to turn the pump on. Literally standing there waiting for what felt like eternity, but was probably about two minutes or so until he decided to turn the pump on. No one else was there, so it should not of been an issue. The station itself is pretty basic, and snacks were at a minimum. The station was also fairly clean, as far as gas stations go. My issue at the station, was the attitude that the attendant had, and why it seems to go unnoticed. Clearly, he has worked there for a while and it doesn't seem to be an issue for management. As expensive as gasoline is, I certainly plan on going somewhere else, rather than spending my money in a place where it doesn't seem to be welcomed

Valero is typically $.05 to .10 cheaper than the rest of the stations in town, and that's good when you're living on a budget. There's almost never a line and you have the Corner Store right there if you need road trip food like beef jerky, sunflower seeds, Pringles, and iced tea. You can also pick up firewood, windshield washer fluid and other assorted sundries as well. However at night this place becomes a hobo boxing ring. Maybe it's just me, but I've seen more than one fight between homeless people here. I'm thinking about selling tickets to watch the matches. The service is also good there, the staff is friendly, and they usually keep everything moving quickly. Prices are reasonable compared to some other places in the area, and overall it feels like a reliable spot. Good gas station and one I like to use when I am nearby.

Usually I lead in with parking tips as in the bay area parking is by no means a sure thing, but this is a gas station. It's made for cars to come into. It's got a half dozen pumps with the usual overpriced gas in case you need it. They sell propane and wood which can be handy, there's a bench facing the pumps outside if you need to sit a spell, and there's a couple break room style tables inside by the awesome coffee bar. Which brings me to what makes this stand out from the other ten million unremarkable places to pump up at. They have an unusual focus on locally sourced items for coffee/sweets/snacks. Better then expected wine selection (for a gas station that is. Let's not get too carried away. It's not the best spot for wine shopping. But is good for a bottle on the fly.) They have many santa cruz roasting coffee's on deck ready to go at all times, and the most comprehensive ice cream cooler for marianne's novelties in the area.Also a strong snack wall. Plantain chips, Limon peanuts, and various spicy/savory chip mixtures. So yeah top off the tank if you need to, but it's great spot for grab and go coffee, sweets, and snacks as well.
